The struggle is real, y'all! lol. Saw this in our town's fish wrap. Too funny. I mean, not for the guy, but I totally understand the temptation.

Firefighter resigns after theft charge
PERKINS TWP. — A Sandusky firefighter allegedly caught stealing Pokémon cards last week resigned before a disciplinary hearing.
Chase T. Green, 27, of the 1000 block of Wyndham Lane, pleaded not guilty to one count of theft, a first-degree misdemeanor.
Just before 3 p.m. on May 19, police were called to a business in the 5500 block of Milan Road (U.S. 250) for a theft complaint.
Green allegedly held packs of bubble gum under boxes of Pokémon cards at a self-checkout kiosk, according to a Perkins Township police report. The gum scanned but the Pokémon cards did not.
The three boxes of cards that were not scanned had a total value of more than $85. After paying for the gum, Green reportedly attempted to leave the store without paying for the cards.
Green repeatedly told the arresting officer that he was worried about losing his job.
“He stated he thought he could scan the two items together and he didn’t look at the amount,” the report states.
He was taken to Erie County Jail. A family member arrived later and posted bond.
Green had a hearing scheduled Thursday to learn what discipline would be handed down from Sandusky Fire Department.
But he resigned from his position before the hearing.
Green’s first shift with the department was in March 2022, according to a social media post.

2023.04.12 07:16 Hot_Method_3466 story suggestion

This was a true nightmare and 16 people died a horrible, icy cold watery death in the USA 50 years ago and barely anyone has ever heard about it.
Briefly, [and most of this from memory] a large group of skydivers gathered for a jump near Sandusky OH, the jump aircraft was a WW2 B-25 bomber. Was half assed right from the start, 23 jumpers plus 2 pilots tried to pack into the aircraft and it was so heavy it tipped the nosegear up, so 3 [very lucky] jumpers were told to get off the aircraft.
The intention was to fly to a private airfield and jump there, where the B-25 was actually stationed. A small Cessna took off right behind the B-25, it was to be a photo plane. Things went south quick, the aircraft were separated and there was heavy cloud cover over the entire area, obviously they should not have jumped under those conditions, but everyone was raring to go. Since the B-25 pilot could not see the ground and had only very rudimentary guidance equipment, he relied on radar control from the airport he had taken off from. As bad luck would have it, the controller who cleared them to take off was relieved by another guy, he mistook the Cessna for the B-25 on his radar, the Cessna was indeed in the right position but the B-25 was heading out over lake Erie.
He told the B-25 pilot that he was 2 minutes from his jump point, but in reality he was flying even further out over the lake. All the guys jumped and found themselves in a terrible storm once they made it to and through the clouds and, to their horror, over roiling, open water. Out of 18 jumpers, only 2 survived.
Not much info to be had on this completely avoidable tragedy, here is one link to anyone interested, pretty sure it ranks as the worse disaster in sports parachute history

RUSSIAN OFFENSIVE CAMPAIGN ASSESSMENT, JANUARY 21, 2023 The Ukrainian defense of Bakhmut is likely a strategically sound effort despite its costs for Ukraine. Milblogger discourse surrounding the reported replacement of Colonel General Mikhail Teplinsky with Lieutenant General Oleg Makarevich as commander of the Russian Airborne Forces (VDV) has further emphasized the fracture between two main groups within the Russian MoD—the pro-Gerasimov camp, comprised of those who represent the conventional MoD establishment, and milblogger favorites who are less aligned with the MoD institution. The milblogger discourse on this issue additionally offers insight into internal Russian MoD dynamics that may have led to Teplinsky’s removal. Wagner Group financier Yevgeny Prigozhin has launched a series of information operations aimed at portraying himself as a sacrificial hero of Russia in a crusade against petty and corrupt Russian authorities. The Sun reported that US intelligence estimates total Russian military casualties in Ukraine as 188,000 as of January 20, suggesting a possible 47,000 Russians killed in action in less than a year of fighting. Russian forces conducted a small ground reconnaissance into northeastern Sumy Oblast. Russian forces continued limited ground attacks to regain lost positions along the Svatove-Kreminna line. Russian forces continued to conduct ground attacks around Bakhmut and west of Donetsk City. Russian forces are likely making incremental gains around Bakhmut. Available open-source evidence as of January 21 indicates that Zaporizhia Oblast Russian occupation official Vladimir Rogov’s January 20 claims of a major territorial capture are likely part of a Russian information operation. Complaints from Russian milbloggers indicate that Russian forces continue to rely on cell phones and non-secure civilian technologies for core military functions – serious breaches of operational security (OPSEC).

2023.01.07 03:19 fulkja The strange case of Amanda Dean

Amanda Dean has been missing from Huron County, Ohio, since July 2017.
What makes her case particularly strange is that, initially, her family was told by Huron County Sheriff Todd Corbin that she was at a safe house and not missing.
Last week, however, Dean's family asked Corbin to provide "proof of life" or reopen the investigation into Dean's disappearance.
Corbin asked the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation, part of the Ohio Attorney General's Office, for help.
As a result, the AG's Office started an investigation.
There isn't much more information available, though maybe some of you can add to these sources:
Also, a sub was started to spread the word about Amanda Dean, AmandaDean.
I look forward to your thoughts.

2022.07.02 13:58 BuckeyeReason Tall ships return to Cleveland, July 7-10

For the first time in several years, from July 7-10, the tall ships are returning to Cleveland. The prior couple Great Lakes tall ship events have anchored in Fairport Harbor when visiting Greater Cleveland.
The Nao Trinidad and the Brig Niagara, a replica of the ship that fought in the Battle of Lake Erie, one of the most important naval battles in U.S. history, let alone Ohio history, will be available for tours and highlights of the festival.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Niagara_(1813))
'The Nao Trinidad is a near-exact replica of the ship that led Ferdinand Magellan's voyage of circumnavigation in 1519, Nao Trinidad project manager Angel Rosa said.
“The replica ship was built in 2018, it took 14 months to build and 14 months to research for the rebuilding of the ship,” Rosa said. '
https://sanduskyregister.com/news/394095/nao-trinidad-the-ultimate-expedition/
The Parade of Sail will be Thursday evening at an estimated 5 p.m. Just guessing, but Voinovich Bicentennial Park should be a prime viewing location.
https://tallshipscle.com/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Lake_Erie
By winning the Battle of Lake Erie, the U.S. was able to ferry troops and supplies to support its land forces while simultaneously depriving the British of this supply route. This led to the recapture of Detroit and the decisive American victory in the Battle of the Thames.
https://www.battlefields.org/learn/war-1812/battles/battle-thames
By securing Ohio and lower Michigan, the Americans were able to block the British war goal of establishing an Indian territory in what is today many of the Midwest states, including Ohio, in order to blunt American westward expansion.
'The British also had long had a goal to create a large "neutral" Indian state that would cover much of Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan. They made the demand as late as 1814 at the Ghent Peace Conference but had lost battles that would have validated those claims.[9][10] '

So important artifacts celebrating the European voyages of discovery and Ohio and American history come to our doorstep next weekend.

2021.02.09 17:45 tarvolon Author Spotlight: The Inimitable Genius of R.A. Lafferty

R.A. Lafferty, who died at 87 on March 18 [2002], was undoubtedly the finest writer of whatever it was that he did that ever there was. He was a genius, an oddball, a madman. His stories. . . are without precedent. -Neil Gaiman
Remember those old books for science fiction beginners, the ones that said “If you like Asimov , read Clement” or “If you like Sheckley, read Tenn”? And then you’d come to “If you like Lafferty, buy everything of his you can find before no one writes or thinks remotely like him.” -Mike Resnick
No true reader who has read as much as a single story by Raphael Aloysius Lafferty needs to be told that he is our most original writer. … Just about everything Lafferty writes is fun, is witty, is entertaining and playful. But it is not easy, for it is a mingling of allegory with myth, and of both with something more ... In fact, he may not be just ours, but the most original writer in the history of literature. -Gene Wolfe
I usually read for characters first, plot second, and prose somewhere back in the distance. But there are two people in the world who constantly amaze me with their use of language. One is John K. Samson, a songwriter with a penchant for making the mundane poetic. The other, as you’ve no doubt guessed, is R.A. Lafferty.
If you’re a reader in 2021, there’s a good chance you’ve never heard of him. But there is a similarly good chance that someone among your favorite authors is a fan. And if you read their recommendations, one theme constantly recurs: there is no one in the world who writes like R.A. Lafferty.
Lafferty gets categorized as a science fiction writer mostly because his work sold best in science fiction magazines--and perhaps also because of praise from high-profile SF writers like Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke--but his stories have as much magic as they do science. His work is perhaps a cousin of New Wave science fiction, but it is as much a cousin of magical realism, and perhaps even New Weird. He’s influenced by science fiction and Greek and Roman mythology, but he’s just as much influenced by tall tales, Native American mythologies (Lafferty lived most of his life in Tulsa, Oklahoma), and Catholicism. Put it all together, and you have a writer who is uniquely himself, constructing both worlds and words like no one else.
I don't think I should be getting more attention from mainstream book reviewers. I've never written any mainstream books, and I'm always surprised when the mainstreamers notice me at all. -R.A. Lafferty, and honestly this whole interview is tremendous

Short Stories

If you’re curious about reading Lafferty, the best place to start is with his short stories, which are arguably his best work and are undoubtedly his most accessible. While he thought that his novels had more to say and would reward rereading, his short stories wrote themselves.
The good stories, of course, write themselves. And somebody wants to know who are the really good writers, and how many of them there are. There aren't any. Most of the writers are likable frauds. Some are unlikable frauds. -R.A. Lafferty
The trouble is that the vast majority of his short stories are out-of-print. Fortunately, Neil Gaiman has pushed hard for reprintings of Lafferty’s stories, and we have seen two collections published in the last five years. [Incidentally, Neil Gaiman’s “Sunbird” is actually a pretty solid Lafferty pastiche, so if you read Fragile Things and thought “Sunbird” was the best of the bunch, you should absolutely dive headfirst into Lafferty.] Additionally, a handful of his older stories still survive in Project Gutenberg collections of old magazines with lapsed copyrights. So where to start?

Novels

Lafferty’s stories are easier to digest in small quantities, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t write some excellent novels. And if you’re reading this in 2021, you are much luckier than I was when I discovered Lafferty, because there are fresh reprintings of not one, but five Lafferty novels.

Okla Hannali

Okla Hannali--a mix of history, legend, and tall tale--is Lafferty’s epic account of the removal of the Choctaw people from their home in the Deep South and their rebuilding in the Oklahoma Territory. While Lafferty himself had no Native heritage, he seems to have avoided both the dual pitfalls of romanticization and racist stereotyping. Of course, I am no expert in respectful portrayal of Native cultures, but one of the experts had this to say in the foreword:
Anyone who has endured the milksop, watered-down, enwhitened view of Oklahoma history as taught in high schools all around Oklahoma is advised to read this book with extreme caution. Such readers are further enjoined to not be surprised to hear that there are indeed Indian versions of American history. Okla Hannali very handily provides such a version, and more of them are needed. -Geary Hobson
Okla Hannali revels in the joy of life, but it does not shirk the darkness. Lafferty spends chapters detailing the myriad injustices perpetrated against the Choctaw, but sometimes the most powerful statements are the shortest:
We review the bare bones of the affair. We hurry through the details of the uprooting. It’s a small matter to murder a nation, and these were but Five Nations out of hundreds. Three years, four, five, and most of it is ended. -Okla Hannali (on the Removal)
But amidst all the darkness, there is so much hope, displayed most prominently at the end in what is my favorite death scene in all of fiction. And there is so much rushing, racing joy of life, as evidenced in this delightful passage:
Everything was larger then,” Hannali would tell his son, “the forest Buffalo were bigger than the plains Buffalo we have now, the bears were bigger than any you can find in the Territory today you call that a bearskin on that wall it is only a dogskin I tell you it’s from the biggest bear ever killed in the Territory the wolves were larger and the foxes the squirrels were as big as our coyotes now the gophers were as big as badgers the doves and pigeons then were bigger than the turkeys now.”
“Maybeso you exaggerate” his son Travis would say.
“Of course I do with a big red heart I exaggerate the new age has forgotten how I remember that the corn stood taller and the ears fuller nine of them would make a bushel and now it takes a hundred and twenty and that doesn’t consider that the bushels were bigger...”

Fourth Mansions

I don’t recommend it often, because it’s a trip, and probably one that you either love or hate, but Fourth Mansions is one of the best novels I’ve ever read. Heavily inspired by Catholic mysticism, Fourth Mansions tells the tale of a young reporter who investigates a government bureaucrat who he suspects to be an ancient Egyptian returned from thousands of years in hiding and stumbles upon a conspiracy in which four supernatural groups vie for the soul of mankind. It is off-the-wall and amazing and also has some of the best chapter titles you will ever see:
I. I think I will Dismember the World with my Hands
II. Either Awful Dead or Awful Old
III. If They Can Kill You, I Can Kill You Worse
IV. Liar on the Mountain
V. Helical Passion and Saintly Sexpot
VI. Revenge of Strength Unused
VII. Of Elegant Dogs and Returned Men
VIII. The Line of Your Throat, the Mercurial Movement
IX. But I Eat them Up, Frederico, I Eat them Up
X. Are you Not of Flimsy Flesh to Be so Afraid?
XI. "I Did Not Call You," said the Lord
XII. Fourth Mansions
XIII. And All the Monsters Stand

Space Chantey

Perhaps the most accessible of Lafferty’s novels, Space Chantey is a joyful romp of a send-up of Homer’s Odyssey.
The war was finished. It had lasted ten equivalent years and taken ten million lives. This it was neither of long duration nor of serious attrition. It hadn’t any great significance; it was not intended to have. It did not prove a point, since all points had long ago been proved. What it did, perhaps, was to emphasize an aspect, sharpen a concept, underline a trend.
On the whole it was a successful operation. Economically and ecologically it was of healthy effect, and who should grumble?
And, after wars, men go home. No, no, men start for home. It’s not the same.

The Reefs of Earth

An delightful adventure that sometimes feels like an overgrown short despite length that sits along the border between novella and novel, The Reefs of Earth tells the story of six alien children (seven if you count Bad John), who try to make the world a better place by killing everyone else in it. They run into trouble when they keep saving everyone they meet for last.
If there were only six persons in the world (or seven, if you count Bad John), the Earth would be a much better place. All you had to do was kill all the other people on the Earth.
I must bring the squee to a close for now, but Lafferty is truly a gem, and it is long past time for him to undergo the same sort of posthumous rediscovery that rescued Philip K. Dick from obscurity. And now I really need to go re-read some Lafferty.
Edit: He posted in the comments, but I thought I’d boost a bit. u/epikt is one of the world’s foremost Lafferty experts and is quite friendly, in case anyone happens to have any questions that go beyond simple fan knowledge

I'm curious as to how this fits into each of your versions of what libertarianism is. For me it's simple, in a situation where your actions are likely to cause harm others it is the domain of the government to protect those interests. I believe this in more than just Covid-19, it would be the same with small pox. It already is with AIDS or HIV, if you knowingly spread it you are criminally and civilly liable.
So, should these people be forced to quarantine?

2019.10.23 18:04 PrawojazdyVtrumpets Friendly PSA: Cedar Point will be slammed this weekend.

Resident coaster enthusiast here with a friendly reminder about Michigan's favorite out of state destination. For what it's worth I have been going to Cedar Point religiously for 30 years this year. I have been to every opening day since 1989 and closing day the same averaging 12 trips a year.
I have never in that time seen the park close due to capacity. even on the famous Columbus Day 2013 when it took 4 hours to leave the park.
It is highly suggested you wait until next year and not this closing weekend to go. This Saturday, the park will be slammed with wait times in the 180 minute range for most major attractions. Food lines will be 30 minutes or more and bathrooms... Well it might be cleaner if you go outside.
Good luck and happy riding if you do go..
If you're wondering why it's suddenly like this, the cause is triggering some intense debate among enthusiasts. Some suggest that Cedar Point is simply doing well in the economy while others suggest the new $99 gold pass is just packing the park. (Gold pass is new this year. For $99 you get entry into the park this year and all next year. Does not include parking or access to the water park.) Personally, I think it's the pass deal and not just a sign of the booming economy.

2019.06.27 00:19 HumdingerHomie To the loved and the lost

To the individual who has loved and lost:
Maybe it has been years or possibly only days. Today could be the anniversary of a special day, maybe the cardinal outside your window is a reminder of the one you miss, or the rainbow following the storm was a sign of hope. I want you to know that it is okay to remember. I want you to know that it is only a myth that time heals. It is okay to feel bad. You never replace what you have lost and the conflicting emotions you have today are normal. I want you to know it is okay to think of the person you have lost and to wonder about how different life is now, now that the person you loved is gone.
To the individual I loved and lost:
I want you to know that I think of you often. So many times I have wanted to pick up the phone and call you. I know it seems silly, I know you will not answer but I do wonder what you would say if we could talk. In my head I create scenarios. I come up with responses such as, “blah, blah, blah… you don’t know my life...” or “yes, anything you need Sweetie.” I make decisions based on the opinion of someone I can no longer ask. The choices I make are sometimes based on words or phrases I can only imagine in my head since you’re no longer here to say them out loud. We think of you all the time and wonder what corny joke would you have to share. What sarcastic comment would you make?
On the good days, I smile as I wonder what you’re doing now. I wonder if you’re dancing in the heavens, playing pranks, baking pies, gardening, farming the richest soil, riding the motorcycle on the most beautiful landscape imaginable, or if your toes are digging in the whitest sand overlooking the most beautiful sunset. I imagine you laughing, I imagine you at peace. I imagine those around you smiling because of the joy you bring. Then I pause, and I think, “Crap. Did you just see me do that? Are you really watching over me? Over us?” I wonder if you find humor in the silly things I do or the stumbles I may have. I wonder if you shake your head in disbelief at statements I make or jump up with excitement if I do something that makes you proud.
I sit and I wonder. It’s been quite the journey without you here. I know I am not the only one hurting. I know others miss you as well. I wonder if they think of you as often as I do or if they play out the scenarios in their head, replay your response, and look at photos and remember entire conversations. I hope you know you were loved; I pray you know how much you are missed.
I sometimes wonder if you’d forgive me for what I did or didn’t do that caused you hurt when you were still here. I hope that now you see and know how much I really cared, how influential you actually were in my life. I regret I did not always tell you. If I told you a million times before how much I loved you, I wish I could tell you a million more. I know nothing in life is guaranteed, your time was up and I have to accept that. I can accept that you are no longer here and I will move forward, but I will not let go.
I will move forward and forever have you influencing who I am, what I do, and the relationships that I develop. Who I am now is because of you. Grief is full of conflicting emotions and part of moving forward in my life is acknowledging what I lost when you left. You cannot be replaced. The role you had in my life has contributed to who I am, the experiences I have endured, the beliefs I have developed, and my perceptions regarding myself, others, the world, and my future.
Until I lost you. grief was a myth. It was something I had heard of but barely understood. I could sympathize with others but to empathize was hard. Every loss is personal; it is based on each individual relationship. To me you were a father, a brother, a grandparent. To someone else, you were a spouse, a son, a father. I cannot expect anyone else to get it, to understand the grief I have. Losing you was hard. Losing myself is not an option. I want to live, I want to experience, I want to move forward.
I now know that time does not heal, that feeling bad is okay, that I can fill the empty chair but you can never be replaced, and that some things cannot be fixed. Not all wounds are meant to heal. Some wounds are meant to be remembered, the scars are lessons learned, tragedy we overcame, and hope for the future. Those wounds, those scars help me move forward. It allows me to focus on what I have presently, what I can do, the relationships I’m building, and the memories I can create. I don’t want to forget you and who you were, the good, the bad, and everything in between. I want you to know that although I wonder about you, I think of you often, I am moving forward in my life, and I’m taking you with me.

2019.06.27 00:07 HumdingerHomie To the loved and the lost

2019.02.08 22:10 Grobble23 Bowling Green Univ & Cedar Fair Hospitality & Entertainment Program Details...location,financing, etc....

http://www.sanduskyregister.com/story/201901280035
Location - 250 E. Market St currently a parking lot),
Building - 78,000-square-feet, L-shaped, five-story-tall building encompasses classrooms, meeting rooms, offices, storefront space for other businesses
Cost - 13.6M (11.8M from Cedar Fair, 1M from the town & 800K state grants)
Deal - 10yr tax abatement, later taxes collected go into Sandusky infrastructure fund and 10% go to local schools. The port authority will be the owner of the building for the 1st five years and then the building will be sold to Resort School LLC , which is under Cedar Fair
Renderings look nice and will definitely spruce up the look of the town a bit. Add this to the 2 new dorms under construction and some of the eyesore will be lifted off. Also, the potential destruction and something nicer built or expansion of Castaways on the site of the recently bought Budget Host Inn Motel. This is what CF was likely talking about with the "change editorial" and people opposing change. Cedar FaiCedar Point are investing a lot in town and it will change the way things look and maybe the dynamics slightly They still have several other parcels in town undeveloped.

2019.02.07 19:22 Grobble23 Cedar Point Buys Budget Host Inn Motel ..more land acquired.

Tony Clark, a spokesman for the company, confirmed the transaction. But he wouldn’t provide any insight into the park’s possible plans for the property, located beside Castaway Bay, another business Cedar Point owns.
http://www.sanduskyregister.com/story/201902060028
The place is dumpy so surely a demolish job for the land . CP has acquired a bunch of land off the peninsula the last few years with no stated plans for most of the land. The new dorms on 3rd and 4th street are known. The site of the Bowling Green Univ theme park program campus/dorms, etc.. has not been stated. Moving more offices & business operations in to town has been a longterm goal. Rumors exist of a possible Breakers Express II eventually to possibly service the outdoor sports complex guests and the upcoming indoor sports complex scheduled to open June 2019.

2019.01.15 03:11 ThaneOfPriceHill Reviewing my 2018 Coasterdamus Predictions

With the 2019 Coasterdamus prediction show coming up tomorrow, I thought I would review my predictions I sent to Mike and EB for last year's show--along with whether or not they came true:
  1. Steel Vengeance will live up to all of the hype.
Not a bold prediction by any means, but it came true.
  1. The spinning on Time Traveler at Silver Dollar City will be toned down after the first few weeks of operation.
If I recall correctly, the spinning was actually toned down during the test and adjust phase before the ride opened so an almost true prediction.
  1. Cedar Point will continue to develop itself into a multi-day resort. A new hotel will be announced for the site of the old Sandcastle Suites hotel and a new budget hotel will be built on the land the park recently purchased in Sandusky. (http://www.sanduskyregister.com/story/201712250005)
This one didn't happen. Though with the razing of the Cedars dorms and the old Sandcastle Suites land still undeveloped there is still the potential for more hotels at Cedar Point.
  1. Toy Story Land at Disney's Hollywood Studios will get mostly positive reviews.
A milquetoast prediction and at least half true. Most Disney enthusiasts had tepid expectations for Toy Story Land and while there were some well founded complaints (lack of shade) most people were pleasantly surprised by how much they enjoyed Slinky Dog Dash and the rest of the land.
  1. Pixar Pier at Disney California Adventure will get mostly negative reviews from the Disneyland purist fanboys.
This one was true, too, but predicting Disneyland purists will be upset by changes isn't going out on a limb.
  1. The Harley Quinn Crazy Coaster at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom will get rave reviews and we'll see more Skywarp rides added at almost all Six Flags parks in the future.
I was wrong on this one.
  1. A Cedar Fair park will convert an old restaurant into a"VIP lounge" that offers soft drinks, phone chargers, AC and clean restrooms for guests willing to pay for the experience.
Wrong here, too. Though it seems like a good idea. Kings Island could do it with their International Street restaurant location.
  1. Carowinds will announce that their Hurler coaster will be converted into a hybrid by RMC in time for the 2019 season.
Nope. Though the park is getting Copperhead Strike.
  1. In 2018, Canada's Wonderland will announce a new coaster for the 2019 season.
Yukon Striker was announced, so I guess I was right.
  1. Both Kings Island and Carowinds will expand their ride lineups for WinterFest 2018.
Kings Island did add to its WinterFest ride lineup by adding Flight of Fear.
  1. One of the lower tier Cedar Fair parks finally gets something new.
Nope. Still no love for the forgotten parks.
  1. 2018 will be the year that Mike and EB attend the IAAPA Expo!
Not right on this one either, but there's always next year.
