2023.05.30 13:05 Gazed1 Car accident claims query

I was not at fault for a car accident that I was involved in.
I'm with Discovery, and the other driver is with King Price.
My car is written off. No death or injuries.
Discovery is going to pay off my car (AVAF/Absa financed my car), and then Discovery will pay me the difference.
Is the above all that I get? I was almost halfway through paying off my car. I paid car insurance + tracker monthly. I'm now without a car. The money I'm going to receive is not enough to buy a new car cash. Is my only option to save money or to use the money as a deposit for a new car?

2023.05.30 12:52 Trojianmaru Charged for a trip I never took, while the Uber driver went to the local pub, and they refuse to refund me

At this point, I'm pretty much done with Uber unless I get this refund. I didn't even realise I'd been charged till today, almost a week later, but I remember watching the driver on my map.
I watched this waste of space drive 10 minutes to get to me, then skip the last turn when he was only a minute away, and keep driving up the main road.
I originally thought maybe he was just an idiot who couldn't read a map, and I'm a nice guy who doesn't think being stupid is a crime. So I kept waiting, but he had multiple changes to turn right after the first turn he missed, and he kept going.
Eventually, he even drove past the turn that would of taken me to my house, so he'd now needlessly doubled how far he would have to drive to take me home, and kept going.
Eventually he stopped, and didn't move. So I just said screw it, and cancelled, since by now he was more than 5 minutes away, after already waiting 10 minutes for him to get to me, and had no way of knowing if he would drive past the turn again, and make me wait another 5 minutes after that. My new driver was already in the car park, and I was home within 2 minutes, so I thought nothing of it, until today when I saw a trip that ended somewhere I didn't recognise, and realised it was him.
I've been charged over £5 for a trip I never took, which is already bad enough, but when I googled the address, Google Street view showed me a pub!!! And while I've been in a few pubs over the years, I've never been in this one, and I've never gone to the pub at 6 in the afternoon, on a freaking Tuesday!
This absolutely looser decided that while I was waiting to be picked up, he should take a detour to the local pub, and get himself a pint before picking me up, and I only avoided being picked up by an alcoholic drunk driver, because I was watching him on the map the entire time. If I had been distracted, and not noticed him take longer than he was supposed to, he would of probably gone and had a pint, then come pick me up.
BUT! Because I've had a few problems in the past, with drivers coming to pick me up, then parking really far away and expecting me to come looking for them (and I mean parking outside a car park), I've Apprently had all the refunds Uber are willing to give, and can only give this alcoholic a 1 star rating. Which is honestly not much, considering most people either give a 5 star review, or no review.
So yeah, unless I get a reply back from Uber (which is doubtful) I've got to stick to my guns, and not use them anymore.
Which is honestly only a slight inconvenience of having to carry cash again, or use lyft or someone else, but it's still annoying.

I need help creating a resume. I’m starting from scratch. The difficult part of this is that I've moved my way up in a small company for the last 3 and a half years and have obtained skills that have me eager to apply those skills in an actually fully formed company with safe procedures. With cash flow always extremely tight at this start up, rather than implementing the best possible procedures and working with the best possible machinery, I've been keeping the business afloat with MacGuyver techniques and canniblizing parts from one machine to Frankenstein a new one that will work temporarily for our needs as we grew super fast without the right systems. What I'd like some help with is conveying my experience to hopefully get a job doing something similar but with adequate pay. I'm currently at $19 an hour and would like to be able to convey with my resume that I'm worth at least that. Some context:I’m in my mid-30’s High school grad, dabbled in community college. Blue collar worker, who got most jobs through personal connections. I’ve had 2 jobs over the last 10 years. 7 years as an in-store optical lab tech for a major eyeglass company before they laid off all their techs and outsourced to much larger facilities. 4 years as a production manager for a start-up natural products company. 1 year overlap between the two.As a lab tech, my daily tasks included a lot of data entry, maintenance of lab equipment/machines, and manufacturing of eyeglass lenses to a very precise degree- requiring complex procedures and training to get them spot on to an Optometrist's prescription. I got this job with a very rudimentary resume, and by calling repeatedly for an interview. In this job, I was on an upward track as far as training, certifications, and leadership goes. I had multiple managers/bosses as the company frequently moved people around from store to store, and position to position, and working multiple stores simultaneously I got along great with some of my managers, who wanted to promote me, and urged me to pursue management training, but with other managers, who got caught up in the politics of creating their “dream teams” I found myself on bad terms as they micro-managed in an effort to get employees moved around, and this ultimately ended with my chances for advancement looking quite slim. The company would lay-off all lab techs state wide shortly thereafter.Through word of mouth, I heard about my next job. No actual resume required, just a recommendation and a face to face with the owner of the company.As production (and warehouse) manager, my job is to delegate tasks to the production team, train the team on procedures, keep an accounting of inventory, research and develop new products, submit requests to purchase supplies and raw goods, receive incoming shipments and maintain order in the warehouse. As the production manager at a family-owned start-up, we’ve done some pretty unorthodox things to keep things running. Sometimes our procedures were sloppy, and we’d just barely get by with some of our quick fixes and redneck engineering. We’d have to develop our own systems, and ways of tracking information. All of it has been very informal, and much of our facility is unsafe as far as OSHA would be concerned.I find myself unfulfilled, disrespected, unfairly physically burdened, and underpaid. It is time for me to move on. Never before have I had to actually put a resume together based on how I've gotten previous jobs having almost nothing to do with my resume, so any advice would be appreciated.TL:DR How do I convey my extensive experience and value to a company's Production/Warehouse needs without any formal training/certifications to report? If all experience has been obtained on the job and all work I've done for the last several years hasn't come from formal training/unorthordox avenues (i.e. operating a fork lift without a license and many other instances of faith from my employer being placed on me rather than legal avenues being adhered to, etc) How do I convey my worth to a new company? 2023.05.30 12:34 ra9rme Practical guide to living off investments in early retirement

There is a lot of discussions about "withdrawal rates" and "Do I have enough to retire" ... but very little on the actual mechanics of living off your investments.
For anyone that is interested, I retired early at 39 and I've been living off my investments for almost 10 years now. Here is how I manage my cashflow in early retirement:

Maintain a 2 year cash reserve (combo of HYSA and laddered CDs)
Use cash reserve to pay bills and expenses
Twice a year (July and Nov) I "top up" the cash reserves - first with interest and dividends from my taxable accounts ... if I need to sell stocks I do but I also have a cash buffer that enables me to delay the decision a few months if I need to.
When I "top up" I will also rebalance the portfolio if I'm overweight equities/bonds - sometimes I have "left over" income after topping up and I'll buy new securities.
Eventually I'll have SSI income that will supplement the dividend and interest income so I suspect I won't need as much of a cash reserve.
Eventually I'll add withdrawals from retirement accounts but for now I get by on my taxable investments.

Hello! I'm attempting to outline a magic system for a low fantasy lovecraftian-esque pirate novel I plan to eventually write. TL;DR at the end.
I was toying around, trying to come up with an unique magic system that’s pirate ‘themed’. Thought about water manipulation, but I’m not really into writing elemental magic systems (while I enjoy reading them, I’m not creative enough to write them). At some point I just thought: “There’s plenty of salt in the sea! (And other places).”
There are two major races in this word: The people of the Blue Prince and the People of the Red Maiden.
The People of the Red Maiden are merfolk. Sirens, Mermaids, Selkies, Kelpies, Cetaceans and all kind of aquatic creatures. Their blood is Red (original, yes — I’m still developing the idea lol). They worship the Red Star (eldritch god)
The People of the Blue Prince are landwellers. I’m still deciding if they’re all humans or made up of different humanoid races. Their blood is blue. They worship the Blue Sea (another eldritch god).
The Idea isn’t super developed yet (because I’m currently working on another major WIP, but I’m fleshing out a little bit of it so I don’t end up forgetting it before I start writing) so I don’t have much on it yet. The bones I have so far are the follow:
The Red and The Blue were worshiped as twin gods; wayyyyy back then, when the humans and the merfolk were at peace (ish — they weren’t exactly allies, but weren’t on open war either). Now, as Merfolk and Humans became enemies, so did the Red and the Blue.
It all started when a proud prince shouted at the Blue that no creature could best him. The Blue, quite itched at his challenge, did find it fit to scratch by sending at the prince great monsters for him to meet his match. But no beast of Gods could cow this man, (or so his crewmen thought), and fuming, the Sea could only turn away, scoff and command he rot. The Prince did then celebrate his victory against the Blue, and drove his ship through all the dangerous waters in his view. Thus the Blue sent the maiden of Red, who enthralled the sailors so they wouldn’t beg. She feasted on them as they drowned — until one remained: the Blue Prince. She spared him, leaving him stranded on her isles. It was his punishment for killing the Blue’s creatures. All the while the Red laughed at the prince’s curse. And so the Prince resolved that day to slay this siren and claim her Song, once her power to drive men mad was dead and gone. But the Maiden was as alone as the Prince. And, after eons of eachother’s company, they grew up to forgive and to love, even. The maiden doted sweetly and showed him her secret ways, to both breathe underwater and to live for many days. In such a long extended stay, the Prince did realize, that in all his freedom, he never felt alive. The Maiden trusted him and so told him of how her voice did go, and how to counteract it when she sang her song of doom. And as the words left her mouth, the Prince leapt through the room and drove his saber through her heart. The prince felt no real relief, his love was dead, and he was now alone. He tried to drown, but he could no longer, so he screamed instead. His sword hacked away at his foul flesh, all the while the Blue and the Red laughed, speaking to him of the maiden. But of the prince’s scream the Blue did tire, calling the Red a foul and a liar. In a fit of scheme weaved the Blue the tale of Prince and Maiden anew.
The Prince’s flesh had long turned to salt — and with salt the Blue made men from default. Thus came to be the first new human.
The Red Star hissed at Blue’s treason, and from the ocean’s blood, the Red made the merfolk — all of which hated humans; but one hated them more: the Siren with the Maiden’s blood.
TL;DR: humans were made from salt, so salt has ‘magical’ properties. Any suggestions as to what which kind of salt could do? Any ideas on different types of salt?
I also have no idea regarding the merfolk’s magic system. (Maybe pepper? Lol)

A couple houses down the road from me there was a nice little place just sold to a lovely young couple ( the Newbies ) about a month ago. Their new yard was bordered by a double layer of nice bushy trees on 3.5 sides, which was part of the appeal. Having lived in the city, privacy was #1 on their forever home list. The property itself is surrounded by farm land used mostly for cattle.
About 2 weeks ago the Newbies moved in and when inspecting the property they found several of the exterior layer of trees had been cut down, leaving large gaps in their privacy line. These trees kept being downed by what was obviously a chainsaw over the next few days on all 3 sides but nobody ever saw anything in such a rural area. Hearing farm machinery or a chainsaw throughout the day is fairly common and houses are fairly far apart with trees in between them. As I'm the closest neighbor to them they stopped in to ask if I had heard or seen anything. ( I did not ). We started talking and hit it off enough to exchange numbers and social media info and started chatting often.
The trees being cut not only cost them some of their privacy, but protection from the winter storms which can get quite bad out here. It also really bothered them that someone would just cut their trees without permission.
5 days ago I was called over after dark to watch their children as their 3 dogs started acting odd and lethargic. Turned out the dogs somehow ate what the vet is calling tainted meat and 2 didn't make it. The third is fighting and their vet bill is already around $11,000 due to emergency services being needed after hours, multiple surgeries and testing. The vet came back 3 days ago strongly suggesting that they look around their property for potentially poisoned meat and called the police. They came up and searched the property and found some more dead animals nearby and pieces of old steak which were bagged and brought in for testing.
Yesterday the police showed up at Farmers home and arrested him. He literally lives right next door to me so it was hard not to see what was going on..
I called the Newbies to ask if it has anything yo do with their issue and Papa Newbie just told me the whole messed up story. Holy crap. Turns out Farmer is a legit basket case...
The Newbies were approached the day they took their final pre-sold inspection of the property about the trees in the back of the yard by Farmer. Farmer told the Newbies that their tree branches were growing onto his land and affecting the effectiveness of his electric fence ( installed just last fall ). Farmer strongly suggested to Newbies that they cut the double line of trees down entirely. Newbies suggested Farmer moved his fence back a foot instead as Newbies stated ' those trees are older than me''.
Farmer kept insisting once the sale officially went through so the Newbies took out their deed and lo and behold! Farmers recently installed electric fence was actually 3 ft over their property line.
Farmer now has no choice but to move his fancy new fence back minimum 3 feet. Which means he has to cut quite a few of HIS trees and remove stumps on HIS property to do so. We are still cleaning up from the last hurricane so this will be very hard to get done this season and will be VERY expensive. Plus the machinery needed to cut trees and shave stumps this size will put massive ruts in the land which will have to be fixed before allowing the cows back into the main pasture.
This has started other property disagreements as it seems this isn't the only property that was encroached on and it's not the first family harassed.
( when I purchased my home I refused to cut or move several mature trees on my property that were close to the fence line because 1. They were full grown 25+ yr old trees at this point and 2. It would have cost hundreds to replace with saplings and over a thousand to relocate them. They all mysteriously 'fell' during winter storms within that first year. Each of the homes bordering the farmland have been standing 20+ yrs )
From what we can gather Farmer has been waiting until neighbors went to work or a storm that reduces visibility/noise and cut down trees on others' property that he felt were too close to his property.
We found out through a member of the community associated with the police just now that Farmer was officially charged for putting out antifreeze laced meat ( huge no no here ) which killed Newbies dog gradually in a horrendous way ( kidney failure in otherwise healthy dogs ).
Additional potential charges also include vandalism, destruction of property, harassment... charges stem from not just the Newbies but quite a few families with property that borders the farm. I wish I could prove it was Farmer that cut down my trees but given all this I know it was. Newbies dogs weren't the first to die this way in our community either. They were the first to get to the vet and tested before passing away though and many neighbors are beyond furious.
I wonder how this will all play out... but this smells an awful lot like Karma.
They say there's one in every community. But I'm thinking thanks to drugs there's far more than that in this once quiet and calm community.
