Here are all of the new US CCS (Level 3 fast-charging) stations that rolled out in February 2023, according to the Department of Energy. These chargers are suitable for most new EVs on the market, except for:

1. Tesla drivers who haven't bought the official CCS adapter yet. Certain older Teslas need additional work done to accept the adapter.
2. Leaf owners like me, and some owners of older cars that also use CHAdeMO. If you drive a Leaf, or an older CHAdeMO car, see my matching post in leaf.

There were 194 CCS charge points added in January 2023. That shows continued growth month after month. For comparison, there were only 87 new CCS charge points in February 2022.

Here are all of the new US CCS (Level 3 fast-charging) stations that rolled out in January 2023, according to the Department of Energy. These chargers are suitable for most new EVs on the market, except for:

1. Tesla drivers who haven't bought the official CCS adapter yet. Certain older Teslas need additional work done to accept the adapter.
2. Leaf owners like me, and some owners of older cars that also use CHAdeMO. If you drive a Leaf, or an older CHAdeMO car, see my matching post in leaf.

There were 173 CCS charge points added in January 2023. That shows continued growth month after month. For comparison, there were only 106 new CCS charge points in January 2022.

Hello, I am commuting from marin blvd Jersey City to NJCU (hudson-bergen light rail) The student 25% off is not applied on my account and monthly pass costs $59 I called NJ transit but could not get an answer as they are hanging up the phone. Is $59 reasonable charge (with 25% off) for monthly pass? Thanks

I've been trying to research an ancestor who ended up becoming a nun. She was born in Palermo, Italy in 1882, and migrated to Brooklyn, NY in 1886 with her family.
She's in the 1900 census living in Brooklyn with her parents at 18 years old however after that census year the next time I'm able to locate her she is a Franciscan nun living next to a Roman Catholic church in Paterson, NJ in 1920. In the 1940 and 1950 census she is a nun at a different church in Fairview, NJ in Bergen County.
In her brother's obituary in 1956 she is listed as being an Order of St. Francis nun at again a different church - St. Joseph's School in Bogota, NJ.
I haven't been able to locate a death record using a variation of spelling on Ancestry or Familysearch for her. I've also located her parents and sibling's graves in Brooklyn that do not mention her name. Does anyone have information on which catholic cemeteries in this area of Bergen County I can try to look in locate her grave?

The North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority published a blog post providing a synopsis of its JC on the Move study. In the coming weeks the full study will be published on the JC on the Move website. Below I have included some of the noteworthy takeaways from this blog post.

In my opinion, the study seems to be heading in the right direction. I personally have one or two qualms but those are just mine. The biggest challenge is taking the recommendation of BRT service along John F Kennedy Blvd and turning it into an actual service that is being implementing, but with NJ Transit reexamining the Hudson County bus network, now might be its time to become a reality. Lastly, it seems that improvements to PATH and HBLR were beyond the scope of this study, but we should keep pressing those services to expand their lines and to construct infill stations where appropriate.

It was 2010 and there, on Oprah, Facebook CEO Mark
Zuckerberg announced a stunning donation to the troubled public school system of Newark, N.J.
"One hundred million dollars," Oprah announced in the same booming voice she used to give away cars to her studio audience.
But four years later, it turns out the gift so proudly praised by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and then-Newark Mayor (now U.S. Sen.) Cory Booker has largely been squandered.
A damning report in The New Yorker reveals that more than $20 million of the donation and matching gifts went to big bucks consultants in public relations, teacher evaluation, and data analysis. And student performance has barely budged.
The average pay was $1,000 a day for each consultant.
"Everybody’s getting paid, but Raheem still can’t read," Essex County, NJ, Urban League President Vivian Cox Fraser told the magazine.
A lot of those getting paid had worked for former New York City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein, Teach for America, and other programs in the school reform movement, the New Yorker details.
Booker was to raise matching funds to Zuckerberg’s gift. And he was supposed to sell the whole plan to Newark’s families. He failed.
Zuckerberg’s money poured into the Foundation for Newark’s Future, which included Booker and the deep-pocket philanthropists he was tapping. But it took two years to set up a community advisory board.
Still, Tusk Strategies, a New York firm run by Bradley Tusk, who managed Michael Bloomberg’s 2009 re-election campaign, got paid $1.3 million to get the community involved.
Some blame Booker’s rock star ambition instead of an eye to detail for the bungling. Booker was elected to the U.S. Senate last year.
Newark’s murder rate was through the roof, the city’s budget was in shambles, and cops were being laid off. And still Booker was traveling the country making more than $1.3 million from speeches between 2008 and 2013.
"There’s no such thing as a rock star mayor," Rutgers historian Clement Price told the New Yorker. "You can be a rock star or you can be a mayor. You can’t be both."

NEWARK, N.J.- When Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg appeared on Oprah Winfrey's show ve years ago this week to announce a $100 million donation to remake education in Newark, it was presented as an eort to make a struggling city a national model for turning around urban schools.
Advocates see success in the most visible result so far - many more students in charter schools. But the exodus of students and the public funding that comes with them from the Newark Public Schools has deepened a nancial crisis in a district that still educates most of the children in New Jersey's largest city.
A big part of Zuckerberg's mission was also to improve the traditional public schools.
While there have been major changes there, too, indicators such as student test scores have been mixed.
Add to that frustration that the reformers weren't using input from the people of the city, and it's safe to say that the awe of Zuckerberg's high-minded intentions for using his rst major foray into philanthropy to try to eect sweeping change has receded.
So has Zuckerberg's donation, which was matched with another $100 million from other donors, shown that big-scale philanthropy guarantees quick change?
The answers vary.
"The gift has been enormously productive and benecial, " said Christopher Cerf, the district superintendent. "It's also been pretty deeply misunderstood."
On the other hand:
"We've proven at this point that answer is no, " said Derrell Bradford, a supporter of Zuckerberg's eort and leader of the New York school reform group NYCAN, who previously worked for similar groups in New Jersey. Bradford pointed out that $200 million is a tiny portion - about 4 percent - of what it has cost to run the school district for the past ve years.
Even Zuckerberg didn't expect quick results. In an interview last year with The Associated Press, he said it would take years to measure.
The donation to Newark schools, which were taken over by the state in 1995, came about as a meeting of the minds of Zuckerberg with Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, and Cory Booker, a Democrat who was then Newark mayor and is now a U.S. senator. The politicians agreed on a stratey focused on closing the worst schools, oering incentives to higher-performing teachers and launching new kinds of schools - and they sold it to Zuckerberg.
Charter schools - run by private entities, with more freedom than traditional public schools to set hours and curriculum and to choose their students, and where test scores and graduation rates are often better - have received about $58 million, according to "The Prize: Who's in Charge of America's Schools?" , a book by journalist Dale Russako released this month. The number of students in charters has more than doubled since 2010 and now represents just over one-fourth of Newark's 48,000 school students.
Ryan Hill, the chief operating ocer of the New Jersey schools run by national charter operator KIPP, said the contributions allowed the group to expand from two Newark schools to eight. Children in Newark - and especially African-American pupils - are now far more likely to be in a good school, Hill said.
"Starting new high-performing schools is a lot easier than turning around an enormous system, " he said.
David Sciarra, director of the Education Law Center, a Newark-based group that has sued the state seeking better educations for low-income children, believes Newark is in worse shape now.
From 2010 to 2014, the percentage of district students meeting standards on statewide tests fell in many cases. For instance, a lower portion of both fourth and eighth graders score as at least procient in language arts. The passage rate also declined for fourth graders in math, while a slightly higher percentage of eighth-graders passed.
Sciarra believes the growth of charter schools has hurt traditional schools by siphoning o money, as well as students from the families most motivated to succeed.
"Conditions on the ground have not improved. They've gotten worse, " Sciarra said.
Still, the graduation rate made a big jump from 2011 to 2012 and has been relatively steady since then. Cerf, the superintendent, said the improving graduation rate is signicant and so is another development - that teachers rated as "ineective" started leaving their jobs more often than those deemed "eective" or "highly eective."
As traditional public schools shrank in Newark, Cami Anderson, the state-appointed superintendent, wanted to avoid laying o teachers because the union contract would require ousting the newest teachers rst, even if they were doing a good job. Instead, she moved teachers rated as less eective to support jobs, where they remained on the payroll.
Partly because of that, budget problems remained even as donations rolled in, including more than $48 million to fund a new teacher contract that included back pay and something new for teachers in New Jersey - merit pay.
Anderson left the job in July. Cerf's duties include ushering the district out from under state control.
Sharon Smith, a schools activist with two daughters in Newark traditional public schools and one in a charter, said she was excited after the donation was announced and attended meetings to give ideas.
"Finally, there was an opportunity, " she said.
But instead of using parents' ideas to improve public schools, she said, ocials used their criticism to justify expanding charters.
Cerf said that's not the case. More money has gone to traditional public schools than to charters, he said, and charter growth is on the same trajectory as it was in 2006, before Zuckerberg's involvement.
Garth Davenport, a 51-year-old single father with 6-year-old twins, said he believes Newark's public schools are doing better for his sons, both of whom have autism, than the schools in neighboring East Orange did when the boys were very young. He said that he's had problems with administrative issues, such as transportation, but that his sons dive into their homework every night and seem to be increasingly communicative. He credits their schools with that.
"They're picking up, " he said.
Last year, Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, announced a $120 million donation to improve the educations, especially of low-income students, in the San Francisco Bay area.
Zuckerberg's Startup:Education foundation says it's applying some lessons from Newark, especially about "the importance of meaningful community partnerships."

Here's how much each NJ school district spent per student New Jersey school districts spent an average of $21,866 per pupil in the 2017-18 school year, up 4.9 percent from the year before, according to a new state report.
The figures were included in New Jersey's Taxpayer Guide to Education Spending, released by the Department of Education, which includes information about the spending practices of school districts across the state.
Among regular districts, the smallest ones were often outliers, spending the most or the least compared to other districts.
In Bergen County, total per-pupil spending ranged from a high of $33,884 in the tiny Alpine district to $15,091 in Fairview.
Alpine, one of the smallest districts in the state, has a single K-8 elementary school that serves about 150 students. Fairview has two schools and two annexes that served 1,436 students in grades pre-K to 8 last year.
In Morris County, Mendham topped the list by spending $30,132 per pupil, while the lowest spender was Dover at $16,062. Mendham has an elementary school and a middle school with about 700 students in total.
Dover served 3,237 students last year in five schools that serve pre-K to 12th grade. Cathy Jenisch, the business administrator, said the district has kept costs low by purchasing supplies and utilities through cooperatives and through the use of grants. The district also had single-digit increases for health benefits, while other plans saw double-digit increases, she added.
In Passaic County, spending in regular districts ranged from a high of $30,527 in Paterson to a low of $16,986 in Prospect Park. Prospect Park has one school, with 916 students last year in grades pre-K to 8.
Paterson's per-pupil spending appeared to show a huge spike from one year earlier, when it reported spending $21,224 per student. But officials said that the number in the state report — $30,527 — was incorrect and likely the result of double counting.
"It has been updated and that update is not reflected in the data released by the state this week," said district spokesman Paul Brubaker. "The district’s business administration team is working on getting the correct number published as soon as possible.”
Overall, the highest spender was a special services district in Bergen County that serves students with special needs and disabilities. Vocational school districts in Bergen and Passaic counties, which offer training in career skills, were also top spenders.
Charter schools in Passaic and Bergen counties were among the lowest spenders.

In order to provide increased public accountability and transparency, N.J.S.A. 18A:22-8 requires officials in each school district to place a user-friendly summary of their proposed budget on the district's website (if one exists). N.J.A.C. 6A:23A-8.1(c) requires the user-friendly budget summary to be posted on the district’s website within 48 hours after the public hearing on the budget. After the election (and following municipal review if the budget is defeated), a final user-friendly summary of the final budget must be posted on both the district's website (pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:22-8a) and the Department of Education's website.
The NJDOE worked with the New Jersey Association of School Business Officials to create the format for the budget summary. It includes: all appropriation line items aggregated by item type; the school tax rate; the equalized school tax rate; revenues by major category; the amount of available surplus; a description of unusual revenues or appropriations with a description of the circumstances of the revenues and appropriations; and a list of shared services agreements in which the district is participating.
N.J.S.A. 18A:7F-5.3 requires that the user-friendly budgets contain detailed information on the salaries and benefits of each district superintendent, assistant superintendent, school business administrator and school district employee whose annual base salaries exceeds $75,000, and who is not a member of a collective bargaining unit. These postings must stay on-line for a year, until they are replaced by the following year's budget summary. The information provided as part of the user-friendly budget summaries is for contracts in effect as of January 1, 2019. The amount columns are reported on an annualized basis and represent the maximum amount that the employee could be paid in the given year.
It is important to note that some of the benefits listed on this website—such as stipends, the buyback of accrued sick time and separation payments—have either been capped or are no longer permitted to be included in new administrator contracts, which must be reviewed and approved by the Executive County Superintendent in each county.
Finally, all users of this information should note that the salary data contained in the user-friendly budget summaries are self-reported by the districts. The NJDOE has not approved this information, nor is the Department responsible for its accuracy.
