2023.06.03 15:35 CNard12 Rookie Bi-Weekly Analysis #4
Rookie Performance Evaluation 4
With so many players in the MLB, some of the newest players get lost behind some of the high profile names. We are here today to evaluate every rookie who has played this year and highlight the top performances of the last two weeks and for the entire year. This week Josh Jung murdered some baseballs, Grant Anderson struck out seven in his debut out of the bullpen, and Bobby Miller shut down the Braves (and Nats).
Top Bi-Weekly Performances
American League: - Josh Jung (TEX 3B): Josh Jung continues to dominate at the plate, winning back to back AL rookie of the month awards in April and May. Josh Jung ended the month of May by slugging for 5 doubles, 1 triple and 4 home runs. Jung leads all third baseman in runs and batting average and leads all rookie batters in runs (4), hits (61), home runs (12), and RBIs (37). In his last 10 games, Jung had 9 extra base hits. Offensively, Jung is already worth 2 WAR and has only gotten better throughout the year. Jung sees the ball well, hitting 50.5% over 95 mph (top 90% in the league) and has been able to barrel 12.2% of pitches seen (top 81% in the league). Defensively Josh Jung is in the bottom half of 3rd baseman, having negative -2 defensive runs saved and -1 outs above average. Despite his below average defense, Josh Jung has been one of the best third baseman in the majors all season.
- Masataka Yoshida (BOS LF): The Japanese superstar is doing all he can to keep the Red Sox afloat. Yoshida continues his hot streak, batting .348/.412/.500 in the the last 15 days. After a somewhat slow start to the season, Yoshida has emerged as one of the two big favorites for AL rookie of the year (along with Josh Jung). Yoshida still only has 21 strikeouts and walks on the year through 48 games on the season. Yoshida will put the ball in play and will rarely kill a batting rally with a strikeout. He hardly chases the ball and is top in the league on whiff rate. Yoshida has adapted to MLB pitching very quickly and will remain a superstar for years to come.
- Logan Allen (CLE SP): The Guardians have a loaded starting pitching staff with the return of Aaron Civale and Triston McKenzie. Logan Allen, along with rookies Tanner Bibee, Hunter Gaddis, and Peyton Battenfield, has shined in the starting rotation. Allen had his best game of the season, going 7 innings against the Baltimore Orioles allowing only 3 hits, no earned runs, and striking out 10. Through 7 starts in the year. In his last three starts, Allen has only allowed 4 earned runs through 18.2 innings. Of the four rookie starting pitchers for Cleveland, Allen has pitched the most innings (39.2) and holds the lowest ERA (2.72). Allen’s next start is scheduled on June 3rd against the Minnesota Twins.
- Louie Varland (MIN SP): Varland pitched seven shutout innings against the Houston Astros. Varland has pitched back-to-back quality starts in 4 of his last five starts. The only game Varland did not get a quality start was against the Angels, where he gave up only 2 earned runs in 5 innings. Varland primarily throws a 4-seam (42%) and cutter (30%) and goes to his slider (12%) and changeup (12%) to put batters away. Varland hardly walks batters but gives up a lot of hard contact. Nonetheless Varland has pitched effectively, limiting the damage done in most games he has started. Varland's next start is projected to be on June 6th against the Tampa Bay Rays.
- Ryan Noda (OAK 1B): Ryan Noda powered a three-run home run to snap the Athletic’s 11-game losing streak. In the last 15 games, Noda has batted .256 with 3 home runs and 3 doubles on 11 hits. Noda hits 48.2% of balls 95 mph or higher and barrels 16.9% of pitches. Despite this, Noda ranks in the bottom percentile in whiff rate. Noda whiffs on 36% of fast balls, 42% in breaking balls, and 38% of offspeed pitches. Noda has struck out in 33% of his plate appearances (61 strikeout total) but simultaneously ranks in the top percentile in walks taken (35 walks total).
- Zach Neto (LAA SS): Despite all the preseason hype for Anthony Volpe and Gunnar Henderson, Zach Neto has quietly emerged as the most consistent bat for rookie AL shortstops. Only 22 years old, Neto was the first player from the 2022 MLB draft to make the majors. Defensively, Neto has been steller. In 44 games, Neto has already racked up .8 defensive war and has generated 2 more outs above average than other shortstops. In the last 15 days, Neto has 11 hits with 4 doubles and a home run. Neto had small injury scare against the Marlins with a finger contusion, but has already made it back into the starting lineup.
- Grant Anderson (TEX RP): Grant Anderson has only played in one game this season but I figured he deserved a special shoutout. In his major league debut, Anderson pitched 2 and 2/3rd innings out of the bullpen striking out 7 of the 9 batters. Anderson only gave up one hit and earned the win against the Detroit Tigers.

National League: - Bobby Miller (LAD SP): The Dodgers #2 prospect has done nothing but impress. In his first two starts on the season, Miller has posted a 1.64 ERA through 11 innings. Miller equally throws a sinker, changeup, slider, and 4-seam fastball. On his fastball, Miller averages 99 mph on his sinkers and 4-seam and sometimes will go to his curveball to strike out batters. In his debut, Miller went 5 innings and only one earned run on 4 hits against the Atlanta Braves. He followed his debut by going 6 innings, allowing only 1 earned run on four hits. Bobby Miller's next scheduled start is June 4th against the New York Yankees.
- Spencer Steer (CIN 3B): Spencer Steer uses every side of the field. In the last 15 days, Steer has batted .389/.424/.667 with 4 doubles, one triple, and three home runs. Steer currently leads NL rookies in hits (59), RBIs (T28 with Outman), and doubles (T15 with Tovar). Steer has recently returned to his 2022 self hitting 8 home runs on the season and putting the ball consistently in play. Steer has struggled greatly defensively with -8 outs above average at both first and third base and generating -.4 WAR on the season. He ranks in the bottom 1% of outs above average and, when fielding, is completely 7% of plays as expected at both first base and third base. Despite these struggles, Steer’s production at the plate has lead him to be named the National League Rookie of the month for May.
- Matt McLain (CIN SS): The Red’s #5 prospect made his major league debut after TJ Friedl was moved to the 10-day injured list . In the last 15 days, McLain has the most at bats (57), hits (T21 Steer) and runs (T11 Steer) in the National League. McLain won this week’s player of week and continues to bat .329/.390/.486 in 16 games. McLain is primarily causing damage against fastballs and breaking balls, batting over .400 on such pitches. Defensively, McLain has been stellar. In only 16 games, he has generated 2 outs above average at shortstop and has added 5% success rate at the position off 43 attempts. If McLain can continue his success at the plate, along with fellow ROY contender Spencer Steer, then they can help Cincinnati compete for a relatively week NL Central division (who knows what may happen if the Reds call up fellow shortstop Elly de la Cruz).
- Corbin Carroll (ARZ LF): Corbin Carroll continues to impress and at this point I feel like I am repeating myself. The 22 year old left-fielder has power, defense, and speed. Carroll has helped the Diamondbacks to take control (or at least tie) in the National League West. In the past 15 days, Carroll has slugged for 4 doubles and three home runs on 15 hits. He leads the national league in stolen bases and has a real shot at joining the 20 / 20 club as a rookie. On the year, Carroll’s slash line is .287/.372/.516. Of all rookies, Corbin Carroll leads in WAR, already accumulating 2.1 on offense. On the defensive side of the ball, Carrol has generated 2 outs above average and has added 2% to the expected fielding average in left field. Expect to see Carroll on these lists for the rest of the season.
- Patrick Bailey (SF C): Joey Bart was thought to be the replacement at catcher for the San Francisco after the departure of Buster Posey. With everyone’s focus on Bart, Bailey went under the radar. In 11 games, Bailey has batted .333/.350/.564 with 12 hits, of which 3 were doubles and 2 were home runs. In the minor’s. Bailey was praised for his framing abilities behind the plate. If Bailey can continue his success at the plate, San Francisco may be posed well at the catcher position for years to come.
- Will Brennan (CLE RF) - Although he is not a batter that consistently hits the ball hard, Will Brennan, in the last 15 days, has 12 hits in 12 games including 3 doubles and 1 home run.. He is batting .364/.400/.515 and has been reliable at the plate when batters are at first base. Brennan has a batting average of .318 with a runner at 1st (23 plate appearances) and batting .500 with runners at 1st and 2nd (6 plate appearances). Though Will Brennan did kill a bird on a ground-ball single last week. So… he has that going against him.

Worst Bi-Weekly Performances:
- Brice Turang (MIL 2B) - In the last 14 games, Turang is batting only .077/.122/.154. In his last seven games, Turang only has one base hit. In his last 15, Turang only has 3. Turang, on the season, has struck out in 27% of his plate appearances and barrels on only 3.6% of pitches. Turang primarily is struggling in making contact with offspeed pitches, whiffing on 40% of those seen.
- James Outman (LAD OF) - After starting the season hitting everything out of the park, Outman bat has cooled off immensely. In his last 10 games, Outman only has two singles and is batting .074/.182/.074. Outman hits the ball hard when he makes contact, but has whiffed on 40.4% of pitches seen. Outman has striked out in 35% of his at bats. Outman leads all rookies in strikeouts and 5th in the majors. Defensively, Outman has been above average in furling in the outfield. He is converting 3% more outs than estimated success rate and has created 3 outs above average in the outfield.
- Anthony Volpe (NYY SS) - Defensively, Anthony Volpe has been phenomenal at shortstop. The Yankee’s #1 prospect is only 22 years old and already has .7 defensive war. Volpe has recently struggled at the plate. He is second among rookie pitchers in strikeouts (68) and 8th in the majors. On the season, Volpe is only batting .192/.270/.355. But when Volpe does get a hit, he hits for power and brings speed on the basepaths. Volpe has 13 steals on the season and has yet to be caught stealing.
- Karl Kauffmann (COL SP) - Kauffmann made his major league debut on May 19th and has not had a good time. In three starts, Kaufman has posted an 11.37 ERA and earned 3 losses. In his first start, Kauffman went 4.1 innings against Texas and allowed 4 earned runs off seven hits. In his next start, Kaugment again went 4.1 innings against Miami ang gave up 5 earned runs on 6 hits. In his final game, he went 4.0 innings against Arizona and allowed 7 earned runs on 9 hits. In all three games combined, Kauffman only struck out 7 and walked 8. Kauffman is only averaging 90 mph on his fastball and has left too many pitches in the middle of the strike zone.
Shout out to Miles Mastrobuoni as well who is batting .053 in 9 games (19 plate appearances) and for having an ERA of 108.

My Early Rookie of the Year
American League: - Masataka Yoshida (BOS LF) - See my blurb above
- Josh Jung (TEX 3B) - See my blurb above
- Esteury Ruiz (OAK CF) - In 58 games, Ruiz is already at 28 stolen bases. ALthough Ruiz is not hitting for extreme power, his speed is turning almost half of his base hits into what is essentially a double. In most offenses that are not the Oakland Athletics, this would typically translate to more runs and have them take leads early on balls just put in play. Among qualified rookies in the American league, Ruiz ranks 3rd in batting average, T1st (with Jung) in hits, and 1st in doubles. Ruiz does rank in the bottom percentile for hard hit percentage (1%), barrel rate (5%) and walk rate (5%).
- Hunter Brown (HOU SP) - In 11 games, Hunter brown has a 3.64 ERA and recently overtaken Kodai Senga for the lead in strikeouts for rookie pitchers. Brown struggled in his last start against Minnesota, giving up 5 earned runs on 6 hits. This was after Brown had pitched back-to-back quality starts against the Oakland As (7 IP 2 ER and 6 IP 1 ER).
- Logan Allen (CLE SP) - See my blurb above
- Bryce Miller (SEA SP) - The Mariners #2 prospect dominated the league in his first five starts going at least 6 innings in each and allowing only four runs in total. Miller only had one hiccup game in which he allowed 8 earned runs in 4.2 innings against the New York Yankees. Miller's success has been largely in part in limiting walks and throwing many strikes for weak contact. Miller is top in the league in walk rate only allowing walks in 2% of at bats. Miller primarily throws his fastball 68% of the time and goes to his offspeed pitchers to put batters away. Miller is set to start on June 4th against Nathan Eovaldi of the Texas Rangers.
- Yennier Cano (BAL RP) - In his first 9 innings of the year, Cano did not allow a single base hit. Can has 30 strikeouts on the season through 30 innings of relief. In 5 save opportunities, Cano has successfully earned 4 saves with a 0.93 ERA and a WHIP of 0.59. Cano remains the secondary closer behind Felix Bautista, used primarily to maintain leads in close games and as the set-up man for the 9th inning.

National League: - Corbin Carroll (ARZ LF): See my blurb above.
- Spencer Steer (CIN 3B): See my blurb above.
- Kodai Senga (NYM SP): In his last start, Kodai Senga pitched 7 innings of 1 hit baseball against the Philadelphia Phillies. Senga ranks first among national league pitchers in strikeouts and second in innings pitched (behind Ryne Nelson). Kodai Senga strikes out 29.8% of batters but gives up lots of hard contact. Batters are still only batting .125 against his ghost fork and strikes out 59.1% of batters as a putaway pitch. This is primarily because batters have a 59.1% whiff rate on his forkball (66 PA) and his slider (7 PA). Senga is scheduled to pitch on June 4th against the Toronto Blue Jays’ Yusei Kikuchi.
- Ezquiel Tovar ( COL SS): In 55 games on the season, the Colorado shortstop has accumulated 46 base hits in 55 games. Tovar leads all NL rookies in doubles (16) and is currently slashing .241/.286/.398. Defensively, Tovar has been exceptional at shortstop accumulating 0.9 defensive war. Tovar has 6 outs above average at shortstop and has successfully converted 3% more plays than the estimated success rate.
- James Outman (LAD CF): See my blurb above.
- Francisco Alvarez (NYM C): The Mets #1 prospect has taken the league by storm. Alvarez has been above average in framing especially above the zone and has 5 blocks above average. Alvarez however has struggled in maintaining run control having -3 CS above average. At the plate, Alvarez has 6 doubles and 8 home runs on the season in 35 games with a slash line of .252/.308/.523.

2023.06.03 15:05 echopath Dive trip report: Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Palau
Over the last six months, I’ve been in Asia (and the Pacific) bouncing around as part of a larger trip, but diving being a huge emphasis, accumulating around 200 dives during this period. I’m leaving some of my dive log notes and thoughts of each place since it would probably help people in planning which hotspots to go to within this region and how they compare to each other.
For additional context, I went into this trip having around 200 dives, mostly in the Caribbean and Red Sea, with a little bit of SEA experience.
I know it personally was difficult when doing research, especially when pretty much all of these are described as “wOrLd cLaSs” or “bEsT iN tHe wOrLd” to some varying degree (spoiler: not everything is IMO).
I personally dive because of reef health and fish life, so my notes are written with a heavy bias towards that. I acknowledge that bias so obviously places that only have a big muck / macro presence will be rated lower on here.
A-tier and above is a place I’d gladly go back to and dive again. I’d also recommend these places where you should make plans to travel here or go out of your way specifically to dive.
B-tier and above is good. Maybe not incredibly mindblowing but still good and worth doing nonetheless. But there are some flaws that keep it from being superb.
C-tier is mediocre. I could maybe find a few bright spots, but I didn’t find diving here to be particularly great or terrible at the same time. Just average. I wouldn’t make trips to dive these places specifically. I might recommend diving them if they overlap with some better stuff higher on in the list, but they’re skippable.
D to F-tier is just bad. Very little things to enjoy if at all. Avoid.

Malaysia
Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai (15 dives) Difficulty:
- I have a good amount of experience in moderate current, but I found that the diving wasn’t particularly difficult when I was here. We had currents on some Sipadan days, but they were gentle pushes at most. I’d say that Cozumel currents were much stronger than what I experienced at Sipadan. Although, I have heard that Sipadan could get wild sometimes, so YMMV
- Dives could get somewhat deep, so having AOW is probably advisable before coming
Wildlife:
- Tons of turtles and sharks. Probably at least half a dozen sharks from afar and even more turtles every dive
- Saw schools of jackfish, parrotfish, and some barracuda here and there, but didn’t see the famous barracuda tornado
- Outside of those, not as many fish as I had hoped for. Decent level of biodiversity, but there were lots of places with little fish activity. The smaller, shallower healthy patches had lots of fish
Reef life:
- I have mixed feelings about the reef life here. The parts that are healthy are super vibrant, but they were in the minority for sure. A lot of really depressing, barren areas with dead fields of coral outnumbered the healthy parts. Reefs are my biggest reason for diving, so I was most disappointed by this.
- Sipadan was likely better in the past, but the overall state of the reef is in much poorer condition nowadays
- The fact that the dive shop I went with only took people to the same three “best” dive sites all the days I dove at Sipadan doesn’t give me much confidence that the rest of the sites look that good or better
Dive sites:
- Not too much variation in types of dives or topography of the sites. Mostly wall dives with dropoffs. I got a bit bored after three straight days of diving Sipadan and thought that was an adequate amount of time to spend there. Most dive shops also only focus on the same handful of the best dive sites, so it gets repetitive fast
- You also can’t dive Sipadan every day that you’re there. All resorts will do some sort of package where if you dive with them for five days, three will be Sipadan, etc. and the others will be in Mabul and Kapalai. I think these sites are, for the most part, boring. Honestly speaking, no one should make the trip out here just for these dive sites, unless you enjoy macro that much. Even then, there are many other places around SEA that are easier to get to that have a better reputation for macro
Overall: Sipadan B, Kapalai B-, Mabul C
- I do think Sipadan is fairly overrated, probably due to the exclusivity of the diving because of the permit system, giving the illusion that it’s going to the best dives of your life
- Yes, I think the diving is decent, but not exactly “best in the world” as Southeast Asia tends to have a reputation for. I also don’t think Barracuda Point is one of the best dive sites in the world as it’s commonly advertised lol. I think it’s mostly marketing hype. I found lots of areas around SEA with much less marketing behind them to be equivalent or better than Sipadan
- Given how hard it is to get to Sipadan, the costs of diving there, and the proximity of Indonesia / Philippines, I’d say that if you’re deciding between diving in Malaysia and the other two, I’d pick the latter every time
- If I was already in Malaysia and wanted to tack on diving, then yes, Sipadan is a good addition to your existing itinerary. I just wouldn’t go out of my way or pick it over other options. I will likely not be returning to Sipadan to dive for this reason, especially since you can’t even dive Sipadan every day and the non-Sipadan dive sites are not great
Indonesia
Raja Ampat (20 dives) Difficulty:
- Going into this portion of the trip, I was expecting a ton of currents and difficult diving based off what I read online beforehand
- We had currents on most of the dives, but they were pretty manageable for the most part. Many of these dives would be diving with the current, where it felt more like a gentle push, sort of like a slow moving treadmill. Some dives where you fought or swam against the current was more like a tiny bit of resistance where you could still frog kick through
- I also didn’t experience down currents, but based on the dive sites we did, I wouldn’t consider them to be anxiety inducing even if they were present. Most of the dive sites had a sandy bottom and weren’t walls or drop offs, so it’s not like they would be particularly dangerous
- There was only two dives where I felt that the currents could’ve been overwhelming for a less experienced diver, but they were ones where we hid behind rocks or used reef hooks to look at mantas anyway, so it’s not like you’re actively swimming with or against the currents
- Most dives also weren’t that deep, probably around 60-70ft at the absolute deepest. We spent the majority of these dives at 40-50ft
- Even putting myself in the shoes of a less experienced diver, I think the diving was manageable for a wide range of skill levels – which I did see many people of varying experience on my liveaboard and at the dive sites
- All in all, I think you can comfortably enjoy Raja Ampat with sub-50 dives under your belt or if you’re comfortable underwater. The diving is for the most part, not that difficult and shouldn’t be a barrier for your decision making
Wildlife:
- Huge schools of the most colorful fish everywhere you look. You’re swimming with schools of fish on most dives. The highest density of fish I’ve ever dove with across every destination I’ve ever been
- Only small criticism here is the lack of pelagic life like sharks, turtles, and mantas (outside of one or two sites), but that’s not a slight on Raja Ampat at all. Seeing pelagics is just the cherry on top of an already amazing experience that you see at Raja
Reef life
- Some of the best, most colorful, and healthy reefs I’ve seen in my life. That’s not to say that the entire region is pristine (it’s not), but given the world we live in today, it’s the best I’ve personally seen
- I’d consider most sites to be absolutely beautiful, with a handful of them to be “just” good
Dive sites:
- Most dive sites were sloping reef dives with maybe some small pinnacles or bommies here and there
- My qualm with the diving in Raja Ampat is that the dive experience is relatively the same across all of them. Get in, dive, look around, get up. No towering structures or interesting topography to navigate. You’re here for the beauty of what lives there, not because of how exhilarating or exciting the actual diving is IMO
Overall: S
- One of the best dive experience of my life so far. I would come back here to dive all the time if I could. Maybe doing a liveaboard to the southern region next time, as I focused on the central this time. But the barriers to dive here are pretty high. Expensive domestic flights, full travel days to and from Raja Ampat including flights / layovers / waiting for transfers, etc., and the best way to dive is via a liveaboard which is more costly than any other option
- Both the floor and ceiling are very high in Raja Ampat. There wasn’t a time where I felt that a dive wasn’t good or that the entire reef looked like it was in poor condition. Every site had something good to write home about
- One thing is that Raja Ampat actually isn’t as remote as you think it is. There’s a huge liveaboard scene and random resorts or homestays sprawled throughout the islands. I had phone signal the entire time lol. A handful of dive sites actually felt a bit crowded at times, in case that matters to you
Nusa Penida (15 dives) Difficulty:
- I actually found diving here to be more difficult than Raja Ampat, lol. Currents were present on many dives, but you also had surge and lots of cold water thermoclines to fight against, which I didn’t have in Raja
- All in all, not terribly difficult diving either where you should reconsider if you’re newish, but maybe wait to get a few dives under your belt or be comfortable with various types of underwater conditions to fully appreciate the diving here. Although, I think you can also enjoy most of the diving here while being relatively inexperienced as well, as lots of sites have minimal currents.
- Most reputable dive shops will cater to your experience level anyway, so I wouldn’t let Penida’s reputation deter you completely. I’ve had friends with < 20-30 dives who rarely dive enjoy Penida, and many people get OW certified here, FWIW
Wildlife:
- Honestly, a little lackluster. Most sites, while having beautiful and healthy coral, felt like a ghost town because of relatively little fish on them aside from a few select spots
- The manta site that everyone goes to is amazing though. One dive I saw around 20 mantas throughout the hour. Pretty much everyone I know who’s gone to Nusa Penida even for 1-2 days has seen a manta, so I’d say your chances are very high
Reef life:
- I was actually shocked at how good the reef health was here. Some absolutely stunning slopes filled with reef life. I had heard good things about Penida, but was actually blown away by some sites here. I think some of the best sites like Mangrove had reefs that are fairly comparable to the better sites in RA and Alor, IMO
- On average, I think the overall reef is probably some of the best I’ve seen of anywhere
Dive sites:
- I thought the diversity in sites was a bit lacking in Penida. Most sites that you visit in Penida are just part of a long reef that spans the length of the island. Because of this, the topography doesn’t change much, nor does the diving experience
- You could spend a whole day diving different sites, but be on the same reef at different parts of the same side of Penida and the experience would be the exact same
- On the days you dive Manta Point, you’d probably also visit Manta Bay and Crystal Bay, which are all fairly boring sites. I’d even say Manta Point is fairly boring outside of the mantas and the latter two are straight up mediocre
- I spent about five days here overall and thought that was a good amount of time since I got to dive the majority of the sites. I could’ve spent another day or two here to dive the other sites in the channel between Penida and Lembongan or on the other side of Penida, but those are less commonly visited
Overall: A
- Really good diving as a whole. If you haven’t dove Indonesia yet, Penida would likely be some of the best warm water diving you’ll do
- I’ve heard Penida being described as Komodo with training wheels and I’d agree with that. Good place to get your bearings in diving with current
Komodo (30 dives) Difficulty:
- This is an aspect that I feel is a bit overblown by commenters online. Yes, there is current and yes, sometimes they can get a bit crazy. But that doesn’t mean that as a less experienced diver (<50 dives for example), you can’t enjoy the majority of Komodo. I probably wouldn’t go as a complete newbie with fewer than 20 dives though
- A lot of the sites have current, but fairly similar to other Indonesia and Philippines hotspots. The currents aren’t too bad the majority of the time. The sites with heavy currents are limited to a few, and dive shops will avoid putting you on a boat where you’re going to a site that surpasses your skill level (e.g. they’ll have different groups / boats for central vs. northern sites, the latter tending to have more current)
- That said, if you want to fully enjoy Komodo with no restrictions or limitations, then yes, you should at least AOW / be more experienced or be comfortable in water. This is mainly in the northern sites like Cauldron, Crystal Rock, Castle Rock, and a handful in the central area which are known for currents
- The dives aren’t particularly deep either. Max depth was ~70ft at most for many sites, with the majority of the dives probably spent at 40-50ft for most sites
Wildlife:
- The tradeoff between Komodo and Raja Ampat is that the former has more big stuff like mantas, sharks, and turtles, while the latter has more fish activity. Some Komodo dive sites had quite a lot of fish activity, as much as the sites in Raja Ampat, but not comparable on average across all sites. In Komodo, you had a chance to see big stuff on the majority of the dive sites, whereas it was a bit rare in Raja Ampat. The hooked dives in northern Komodo are pretty great too, where you see a lot of fish and sharks swim by, and nothing in Raja can really compare to that
- At the end of the day, it’s a toss-up depending on preference
Reef life:
- Reef quality is amazing at some sites, just good at others, and non-existent at some. Unlike Raja where you could get amazing reef quality on almost every dive, Komodo’s sites were a bit more diverse. Some sites like Manta Point where you’re not necessarily diving for the reef and more so for manta encounters, were filled with rubble and fairly bare. On the other hand, sites like Batu Bolong and Tatawa Kecil are clearly some of the best in the world
- Komodo’s best reefs would be comparable to some of the best Raja sites, but Komodo also had fewer sites where the reef really wowed me
Dive sites:
- The good: Komodo has a wider variety of dive sites and dive experiences as a result. The diving here is more “fun” because of the different currents and drifts that let you dive the site differently. The topography of each dive site is also much more diverse, allowing for different dive profiles. You really feel small while diving some of the Komodo sites with all of the towering structures and cliffs. Raja Ampat’s diving, for example, is a bit more “homogenous” in that the experience is fairly similar across all sites
- The bad: There are some “poor” dive sites that you will inevitably visit on your trip. For example, sites where the emphasis is on muck diving. Not my favorite as you know. Or if you go to Manta Point and don’t see any mantas. Or sites where the reef isn’t that good. Muck dives aren’t my favorite, and I almost consider them a wasted dive since it’s all predominantly luck based and you could see nothing. You could feel differently, though
- I spent around ten days diving here doing 30 dives and thought that was perfect. I got to do every site, even some in the south, and repeated some sites that I liked the most. If I were to come back to Komodo, I’d do a liveaboard and spend my time exploring the south, which you can’t really do via day trips
Overall: A+
- I think Raja Ampat is better for fish life and coral health while I think Komodo is more fun for different types of diving, bigger animals, and better underwater topography
- As a whole, I think Raja Ampat is a better dive destination for a once in a lifetime trip, especially if you do it on a liveaboard. The whole experience feels very ethereal and special. But if you’re looking for something quicker, easier, and cheaper to do, then Komodo is a very fine substitute
- On a tangential note, and I’m gonna sound a bit gatekeep-y, but I think Labuan Bajo has become or is on its way to becoming a backpacking hotspot, and not in a good way either. It’s undergone a ton of development in the last several years, and the Indonesian government is pumping tons of money into directing people there. Things have grown way too fast and the infrastructure just can’t keep up. I’m hearing from locals who work in the dive industry saying how they’re getting priced out. Selfishly, more development and traffic is always bad for places like this as more shitty divers thrash around on the reefs and more pollutants destroy them too. Anyway, I would probably go sooner rather than later because who knows if the Indonesian government will be able to keep the reef in this condition with the increase in traffic
- You also notice how popular Komodo is getting because a lot of the dive shops are visiting newbie friendly sites every day which aren’t exactly the best ones IMO. I noticed a ton of people getting OW certified or doing their first few open water dives, and I don’t recommend this at all. I would pick a smaller dive op with fewer reviews on Google and TripAdvisor to avoid the cattle boats and for a more personalized experience to avoid the newbies. You’ll get to dive a wider range of sites and they’ll be more receptive to requests if you dive with them continually
Alor (25 dives) Difficulty:
- This place is not easy to dive. Alor probably had the most dangerous and difficult conditions of places I’ve been to yet. There’s a number of challenging environments: thermoclines or huge temperature drops, deep dives, heavy currents that are frequently changing. I’ve experienced up and down currents before, but they were fairly straightforward and not that quick. Even in Palau and Komodo. But some were violent in Alor. I think the area’s topography is the reason for this. You could be zipping by on a wall on a drift dive when suddenly you could be dragged up to the surface, and right after you exhaust some air in your BC to go down, you could be pulled down and out by a downcurrent with just a few seconds in between. Then right after that, the current could change from left to right or vice versa. It got me breathing a bit hard even at my experience level
- Thermoclines also made it a bit more difficult too. The area supposedly gets cold upwellings everywhere that bring the water temperature to the low 70s, but the coldest I’ve experienced were mid 70s only in a specific part of the area. Nevertheless, going from 82-83 to mid 70s isn’t fun
- However, because there’s so many dive sites here with all sorts of conditions, even if you’re not the most experienced, you can still see a lot of really beautiful things in the easier dive sites. I would recommend being more experienced, though. There’s no proper hospital or chamber for hundreds of miles, so you’re fucked if something goes wrong
Wildlife:
- Tons of sharks and rays (eagle and spotted, not mantas unfortunately) sightings, on many dives Huge schools of fish, pretty much exactly what I was talking about in the RA section
- Dolphins in crossing on the surface all the time. Rarer to spot while actually diving, but it's possible
- I did a handful of muck dives and we did see some cool nudis, but I can’t definitively say that it’s the best macro diving I’ve done in Indonesia. I enjoyed macro diving more in the Philippines
Reef life:
- Almost just as good as RA’s, if not better in some areas. Insanely diverse corals, huge amounts of thick reef coverage where you don’t even see sand at the bottom. I probably give the edge to RA here since I’m fairly sure the diversity in corals is better at RA, but I did a liveaboard that covered more area whereas Alor is more concentrated. The fact that the two are debatable is a good thing
- I don’t think there was ever a time where I thought I had just an “okay” reef dive here. I think even the worst reef dives here are spectacular in comparison to everywhere else except RA
Dive sites:
- The dive site variety in Alor is absurdly high, probably the single most diverse place I’ve ever dove while being land-based. You have almost every single type of diving here: drift, cavern, wall, pinnacle, sloped, hooked, muck, etc.
- There are 70 (and more being still mapped / discovered) dive sites all within a 5-30 minute boat ride. I avoided most of the muck sites, and still felt like I had more reef dies to discover and see after around 25 dives
- Since there’s so few dive shops (~5), they all know each other and coordinate which sites are going to be done the following day. I literally never even saw another dive boat on the same dive site the week I was there
- The underwater topography here is simply amazing. Similar to some sites in Komodo, you just feel small. But there’s a higher proportion of dive sites like this compared to Komodo
Overall: S
- I am obsessed with Alor, and despite diving every day for over a week straight, I’m yearning for my chance to come back and see more of it and see what else has yet to be discovered
- I struggle to properly describe Alor. A more fun RA? Komodo with better reefs? I would characterize Alor as a combination of the best parts of RA and Komodo in one. Alor has the reef quality and fish activity of RA, but with the pelagics, currents, and interesting underwater topography of Komodo. Every criticism I had about RA about how “boring” or easy the diving is, is not an issue within Alor. I rank Alor as just as good as RA for me, and I probably flip flop between which I like more
- Usually when people talk about the best diving in Indonesia, RA and Komodo are the two that are most named. I whole-heartedly believe that Alor is on its way to becoming the third and it’s only a matter of time before everyone catches on and this place explodes in popularity. It’s that damn good Given the quality of dive sites and how close they are, I feel comfortable in saying that Alor is the single best pound for pound diving location I’ve been to. Nowhere I’ve been has this many quality sites in such a compact area. RA, Komodo, and Palau are technically one area too, but the dive sites are way more spread out and sometimes require hours to get to.
- To give you some context on how remote and unvisited it is – you simply cannot decide to walk up and dive this place last minute. You absolutely need to plan it out at least a few months in advance, sometimes 8-10+, and you probably need to be somewhat flexible too. Some dive resorts I contacted were actually booked up this far in advance. There are no hotels, guesthouses, etc., so you need to either stay with the dive resort, or you need their help in booking a local homestay or bungalow. And most dive resorts are small, only catering to 6-10 divers at a time at most
- These small group sizes are actually a bit of a negative, IMO. Because most dive shops only have 1-2 boats at most, if you’re overlapping with divers of different experience levels or people have other requests or preferences, you’re gonna be pulled in one way or another based on the group as a whole
- Truly wild, wild diving here. There is no tourism industry. Dive sites are still being found and figured out on the spot. Lots to still see that aren’t formally written down or documented. Not even RA is like that anymore. This is one of the final frontiers of untouched diving
- It’s kinda funny because no one seems to agree as to what these exact sites and site names are. Google “Alor dive sites” and ask all the dive companies what they call a particular site and you’ll probably get a few different names in return
Palau (25 dives)
Difficulty:
- Palau as a whole had some of the more tricky diving that I experienced on this trip. Maybe a bit more difficult than Komodo's diving. I definitely think you need to have a minimum skill level to comfortably dive here. That’ll probably differ from person to person, but overall, I think that while you don’t have to be an expert, you gotta be comfortable in the water at the least.
- There were currents on most dives, ranging from mild to rapid. They weren’t necessarily the strongest currents I’ve faced, but they were some of the trickiest. The currents pushed you up sometimes, down others, and changed directions frequently
- The strongest currents I faced were on the dives where you hooked in and watched pelagics, so I don’t really consider that to be a difficult situation where you need to dive against or with the current. But it’s worth noting since you might have to swim through or against current to get down there in the first place and hook yourself in
Wildlife:
- The most shark activity of any warm water diving I’ve ever done. On the hooked dives, we saw at least 10+ sharks every time, oftentimes many in the same camera frame, in addition to some manta action and lots of turtles too. These hooked dive sites also had a great amount of fish activity as well I saw the most medium to big-sized fish activity in Palau relative to anywhere else in Asia. Lots of groupers and bumphead parrot fish, for example. I went around spawning time and saw loads of parrot fish during this time
- The tradeoff is that the biodiversity, density, and color of the fish here isn’t as high as in Indonesia or Philippines
Reef Life:
- Wide range in the quality of the reefs. A few sites were absolutely beautiful, most were decent to good, others just okay, and some looked sad (the corner dives for example. They had nice pelagic action but the reef area around where people hooked in were thrashed)
- The walls were very nice, with soft corals and every color of the rainbow up and down the entire wall. The reef dives were a bit monotonous. The corals there were predominately hard, brown, and had lots of dead patches in some areas. Funnily, I think one of the best reef dive sites was on a wreck. The wreck was covered in so much coral it was as if it wasn’t even a wreck
- The reef quality ceiling is very high, but the floor is pretty low too
Dive sites:
- Huge amounts of diversity in the type of diving available here. Probably the strongest suit of Palau. There’s something for everyone: drift dives, wrecks, caverns, walls, reefs, hook dives to watch pelagics, etc. And to be honest, I found the washing machine currents to be pretty fun too. It was the first time I experienced them to that extent, and it was fun enjoying the ride
- The diving here is definitely among the most fun I did anywhere on this trip
Overall: A+
- I frequently hear people comparing Raja Ampat and Palau as two of the best warm water diving spots there are around the world. I disagree with this comparison and think Raja is a clear step above with its biodiversity. Palau is more comparable to Komodo IMO. I rank Komodo and Palau as a 2A and 2B sort of situation and probably rank Komodo a bit higher
- Palau’s best reefs aren’t as good, fish density isn’t as high as Komodo’s, and the biodiversity of both can’t compare, but Palau does have more pelagics
- Similar to Komodo, Palau provides a great range of diverse dive sites and “fun” diving. Not every site is also the most beautiful either
- I think where Palau does have Indonesia / Komodo beat, is the amount of pelagic action that you see in the hooked dives, with a huge amount of sharks
- I also do agree with the common sentiment that Palau does everything well, but nothing the best
Thailand
Andaman Sea (30 dives) Difficulty:
- I was a bit surprised by the difficulty of diving in the Andaman. I had this perception that Thai diving was calm and easy, but I actually had to work on a number of dives. There were a decent amount of dives that had current. Not sure if it was also my liveaboard, but we were going fairly deep too, around 80+ ft and stayed at depth long enough to reach NDL time on each dive. Not terribly difficult diving, but not a leisurely stroll in the park either
Wildlife:
- Lack of fish in many dive sites. At least you’re treated to large schools of sardines and glassfish sometimes
- Saw a very low amount of big stuff — less than five turtles and sharks in total across several dozen dives
Reef life:
- The reef health in Thailand is in abysmal shape for the vast majority of dive sites. There are no colors, and everything is brown or stone gray for the vast majority of sites. A lot of the dive sites are either completely smoothed over or are just fields of dead rubble. Soft coral is pretty much non-existent except from a few places. The rest is falling apart. Truly depressing to see
- That said, Richelieu Rock is one of the few exceptions to this, which I’ll talk about more in a bit
Dive sites:
- Southern Similan dive sites are a complete waste of time. I would skip this area if you could. Mostly “rock diving” as the dive guides like to call it, where it’s really just large rocks sitting there because everything has died off, all the fish have left, and all you have left are smooth rocks. Seriously, though, rock diving? I’ve never heard or done anything like it. What a sad excuse for a dive area, and complete waste of money
- The northern sites like Koh Bon and Koh Tachai are a bit better, but still nothing to write home about Surin islands are okayish – I thought Thai diving would be as good as this as the baseline, but I guess not. Mostly just brown hard coral that’s devoid devoid of color, no soft coral, and tons of dead areas here
- Richelieu Rock is objectively a world class dive site, and an instance where its reputation is well deserved. If I didn’t get to visit Richelieu and dive it four times on my liveaboard, I would’ve considered the liveaboard to be a complete waste of time. Probably the fishiest dive site I’ve ever been to, filled with the most colorful soft corals I’ve seen in Thailand. Richelieu Rock would be considered a great dive site anywhere I’ve been around the world. I’m kinda surprised how good the site is given how shit everything else is around it
- I based myself out of Koh Lanta because I heard it had the best day diving, but most of it is just okay. The only trip worthwhile is Hin Daeng / Hin Muang, and even that’s just decent, not great. Not worth going to Thailand just to dive them. Not best in the world by a long shot
- Koh Bida was decent, but skippable, and Koh Haa was straight up terrible and not worth the time nor money to go to
Overall: Similans D, Surins C, Richelieu Rock A-, Hin Daeng / Muang B-, Koh Bida C, Koh Haa F
- I’ve never felt more disappointed and misled in all my dive experiences than I was in Thailand. I already had lower expectations going into this portion of my trip since I had just dove all over Indonesia, but Thai diving somehow failed to reach those low expectations
- Ever since I started diving, and as I was doing research for where to dive in Thailand, I’ve read so many reviews or comments that said how Thailand diving was “world class” or that it was “comparable, if not better than the Red Sea”. This may’ve been the case many years ago, but it’s certainly not the case in 2023. I was expecting at least decent diving, but after a 30round dives all along the Andaman on a liveaboard and daily trips, I would consider at most five dive sites to be at least “decent,” and only a few of those to be actually good. The rest ranged from outright bad to mediocre
- I’d say that Andaman diving is more appropriately comparable to Caribbean diving, and I probably err on the side of the Caribbean being better on average as a whole, despite Thailand having one, maybe two dive sites that are better than anything else that I’ve dove in Caribbean
- I only recommend diving in Thailand if you have never dove anywhere else warm in the world. If you’ve dove anywhere else in SEA, don’t waste your time and dive in Thailand
- I did a seven day liveaboard that spanned the entire Andaman and I would recommend to only do a two or three day one that focuses on the Surin islands and Richelieu Rock only
Anyway, feel free to AMA. No pics because I mostly record in video, and I'm too lazy to edit something together for now. Plus anyone can make any dive site look good with select shots.

2023.06.03 14:59 IndieFlea End of Month Minor League updates - IndieFlea's Mid-Season Prospect Rankings (Part 3)
Hey all, this is Part 3 of my Mid-Season Prospect Rankings.
Part 1 is here..
Part 2 is here. All stats are as of June 2 unless noted otherwise. Sidenote, it's weird that even stats from the past few days are changing my internal rankings, for instance Grant Anderson excelling again is really forcing my hand to squeeze him in the 50, Cam Cauley is just heating up offensively this week, forcing Top 30 consideration, and Larson Kindreich is continuing to struggle, all while still in Hickory about to turn 25 (not a good combo). Might have to a quick reordering when I'm done here.
Rankings 25-11 - 25 – Dane Acker (prev. 23) - Dane was the third piece from Oakland in the Andrus/Khris Davis trade (which also netted future All-Star catcher Jonah Heim). Acker pitched great for two starts in Down East in 2021 before immediately going down for Tommy John. He came back last year just for innings. He just rejoined Hickory a few weeks ago (coincidentally at the same time Rocker went down for his Tommy John) and has posted a 3.60 ERA in two starts, 7 Ks, 3 walks, 4 hits in 5 innings. I wouldn’t see a huge increase in his innings this year, but staying healthy in either Hickory or Frisco is really gonna be the key to him staying in the Top 30.
- 24 – Antonie Kelly (prev. 24) - Kelly was the main piece from last year’s Matt Bush trade. After struggling a bit starting in Frisco (and subsequently left off the 40-man even though he was Rule 5 eligible), he has converted to a reliever this year and improved. 26 Ks in 19 innings and a 2.84 ERA. Like most of our relievers, walks are the biggest issue (16 in 19 innings so far). He’s got a pretty good sweeper that compliments an average fastball for a reliever. That needs to be his bread and butter if he ever makes it to the majors. Seems like a candidate for the pen in 2024.
- 23 - Jonathan Ornelas (prev. 22) - Ornelas was a 3rd rounder for 2018. He’s always had a good feel of defense, being able to play multiple infield positions well. The question has always been offense. While he was decent in Frisco last year, Ornelas has not put up numbers in Round Rock, with a .678 OPS currently, although he’s getting on base mainly from his 14.9% walk rate. A guy who has a good read of the strike zone but doesn’t hit it hard, but also plays adequate defense can fit pretty well as a utility bench player. Since Johnny’s already on the 40-man, expect him to be the frontrunner for that spot next year unless he’s traded.
- 22 – Emiliano Teodo (prev. 20) - Teodo had one of the better years last year in Down East (115 Ks in 84.1 innings), and earned a spot in Hickory’s rotation, then immediately got hurt and was shelved up until two weeks ago. So far this year he’s been piggybacking with Acker, but as the two build back up to starter’s pitch counts they’ll be throwing on separate days. Teodo has a good fastball but (like most pitches) has command issues, and probably profiles as a reliever once he gets to the upper minors. Teodo was signed in 2019 for only $10,000 in the international FA class that once touted professional car driver and domestic abuser Bayron Lora.
- 21 – Gleider Figuereo (prev. 18) - Figuerero was part of the 2021 international FA class, and turns 19 at the end of the month. He’s already logged 180 plate appearances in Down East. That’s pretty good. Albeit, he currently has a .625 OPS, a 12.3% walk rate and 30.5% strikeout rate. I won’t knock him too hard since the entire team can’t hit and he’s still 18 for a few more weeks. The third baseman will need to hit to stay in this part of the list, but he’s got so much time to improve.
- 20 – Cole Winn (prev. 11) - This one hurt to put this low. Last year in one of his first starts in Round Rock, Winn took a liner off his leg and exited the game. He hasn’t been the same pitcher since, but at some point, you have to stop blaming the leg. Putting aside his ERA, Winn’s other numbers are terrible: 2.24 WHIP, 8.3 BB/9, 11.8 H/9, 8 homers in 38 innings this year. He’s got a decent strikeout rate, but that’s it. His last “good start” was April 23. Since being drafted in the first round in 2018, Winn has always had a command flag, but has still lived up to the hype. But if a prospect excels at all levels except AAA, not sure how much of it is on org development, and how much is on the player. It’s just sad, and very possible he may never make the majors. Send him to complex league or make him a reliever now, I don't even know if that will help or nor. He could fall out of the Top 30 by my next update, and he might even fall off the list by next year.
- 19 – Josh Stephan (prev. 32) - Well I’d rather talk about a fast riser instead of a fast faller. Stephan comes in with the largest jump in my rankings from previous. The undrafted FA (from 2020) had a decent 2022 logging 103.1 innings between Down East and Hickory. This year he’s made 8 “starts” (1 was bulk work), 41.1 innings and a 2.18 ERA, 43 Ks to 8 walks, and only 4 homers given up. His fastball is about average, but has a good slider with vertical movement. His grasp on command keeps Stephan’s floor pretty high. With a logjam forming in Down East, someone’s gonna need to move up to Hickory, and subsequently someone needs to go to Frisco. Stephan’s only 21 but he’s done so well this year, I think he can be challenged in Frisco at this point.
- 18 – Zak Kent (prev. 19) - a softer-tossing righty drafted in the 9th round of 2019, Kent’s been my pet prospect ever since his breakout in 2021. Last year logged 109.2 innings between Frisco and Round Rock to a tune of 110 strikeouts and combined 3.94 ERA (although he finished in Round Rock with a 1.67 ERA). He’s made one start this year so far but got hurt, letting Cody Bradford pass him on the spot start depth chart. Kent has a plus slider and cutter, and passable changeup and fastball, so a little tweaking here and there and he can be a pretty decent back end guy for a rotation. Since he’s already on the 40-man, he’d be a good candidate for the 2024 squad in either a rotation spot or relief role.
- 17 – Marc Church (prev. 21) - Church is the highest ranked reliever on my list. The 18th rounder from 2019 just arrived in Round Rock after posting 31 strikeouts in 18 innings in Frisco this year. Round Rock has come as a difficult challenge to the guy (4 earned runs in 3 appearances, although he has stuck out 9). He needs a bit of more seasoning but has great upside as a backend guy in the pen. I wouldn’t really expect him to fill that until next year, though.
- 16 – Maximo Acosta (prev. 26) - basically the only guy hitting well in Hickory this year (other than the two guys who just got moved up), Acosta is finally starting to hit his stride after missing a year in 2020 (for reasons), then injury in 2021. A .777 OPS is built mainly on good contact, but not necessarily power. He’s also a decent baserunner, having swiped 56 bags over the last two years. The top player other than Lora signed in the international FA class in 2019, Acosta is an intriguing infield prospect playing second fiddle to Acuna in terms of being blocked by position (who in turn is also blocked by Seager). Bulking up on power (which is usually the last thing to come for some hitters) will help his case for being a desired prospect. Until then, he’s likely a trade candidate for lower-value relief pitching.
- 15 – Cody Bradford (prev. 25) - Cody’s rise here is mainly based on his time killing it in Round Rock so far this year. A 0.99 ERA in 45.1 innings with only 3 homers and 14 walks given up is really good. With Kent hurt and Winn floundering, it’s no wonder the 6th rounder from 2019 was chosen to pitch two spot starts for the Rangers. Predictably the soft-tossing lefty was battered by really good major league teams that hit lefties well. His second start definitely showed improvement over the first, but he still has a ways to go before I’m comfortable with him in a major league rotation. Either way, another extended stint the major league rotation will graduate him off this list. So pre-emptive congrats to Cody, I guess.
- 14 – Mitch Bratt (prev. 15) - The pride and joy of Canada’s WBC team, Bratt was asked to face the best American major league hitters on a grand stage at age 19. It went as bad as you could imagine.. Nevertheless, Bratt bounced back to Hickory and has looked good so far. 33.1 innings, 39 Ks, 7 walks, 4 homers, 2.97 ERA. Very solid work. The 5th rounder from 2021 is one of the youngest players in High A right now, and with his average stuff, but impeccable command, his floor will keep him in conversation for a future mid to back end rotation piece for a while.
- 13 – Yeison Morrobel (prev. 17) - The top guy of the 2021 international FA has taken stateside ball pretty decently. His great defense in all positions in the outfield, good feel of the strike zone and sudden baserunning skill is fueling his 15.3% walk rate, 12 steals and .382 OBP. The power is absent though, with 2 extra base hits and .036 ISO very much deflating his OPS down to .682. But it's been an .813 OPS since May 1, so whatever. Morrobel is 19, I’m not concerned about it yet.
- 12 – Anthony Gutierrez (prev. 14) - the top guy of the 2022 international FA class has struggled offensively (.602 OPS, 4 extra BH, 6.7% walk rate) like most of his companions in Down East. Since Gutierrez is the youngest out of all of them (he will be 18 until late fall), it’s not as much of a concern. Scouting has Gutierrez ranked this high, with some calling him four-tool and with the highest ceiling of the group of international FA guys in Down East. I assume power or contact might be his missing tool, which at a certain point will become the most important.
- 11 – Thomas Saggese (prev. 13) - Saggese has always had solid numbers, but seemed to be undervalued when talking about our Frisco prospects. Scouting has all of his tool grades maxed out at 50, an average player, but I feel like he’s outperformed those. Drafted in the 5th round of 2020, Saggese has fared very well at every level. This year he’s talleyed a .791 OPS, and since the first of May he’s been at a .883 OPS. And last night he hit a game-tying grand slam for Frisco, so that's pretty cool. He’s split time between second and third but can’t play either really well. He reminds me a bit of Foscue, although I think Saggese can play them passably. Nevertheless I could see him as a second piece in a potential deadline deal. Or I could see him as an underrated corner guy.
That’s it for Part 3! I’ll get Part 4 complete tomorrow, where you’ll see a lot of the familiar prospects. Thanks for reading!

2023.06.03 13:26 kwyleriskool Might be falsely diagnosed with BPD
During high school, I had a lot of shit happen. A. Lot. I was constantly overwhelmed, over performing, emotional. I experienced the death of a friend/first crush by suicide and it crushed me. I had zero support system, and in fact my parents made it worse. In hindsight, I can only describe my parents behavior as manipulative and selfish. I was very distraught and grieving over the death of my very good friend, and my mother decided it was best to send me to a mental health facility when I began to act out at home. (She said “I heard it was with a shotgun, that must have been a mess to clean” the day after it happened) My mother began to become extremely overbearing and developed (or maybe always had) control issues. Tracked my location 24/7 on my phone, literally watching it hour by hour. Going through my belongings/journal/phone/everything I own to find something incriminating. Wouldn’t let me hang out with friends under any circumstances. Even though I had straight A’s, took extra classes, stayed 6 hours every day after school for my extra curricular. (Lead roles in school performances, best ranked cellist in my state/first chair, varsity track and forensics/debate, 3rd best ACT scores in my class) Long ass story short, one day my mom deceived me by having the school counselor take me out to get McDonald’s, then to the hospital where my mom had lied to the police saying I had made suicide threats and told them I was abusing drugs. This fucking ruined me. The moment I realized who she really was was when I saw the look on her face when I was being dragged away in handcuffs. The police looked at me like I was dangerous and insane. I spent only a week there because I acted normal the entire time. But I still was given diagnosis of BPD Type 1 and prescriptions as well, and forced to take them or else I would be allowed to leave. Anyways, since then, I’ve realized I probably don’t have BPD and was just coerced into it to please my mother who payed all kinds of money for her weird form of punishment. (The first thing she said when I answered the phone at the mental facility was “are you ready to apologize yet?”) I haven’t taken the meds since I moved out and I haven’t had anything close to an episode. I hate that I was forced to believe I had this diagnosis just because of circumstance. It makes me feel so bad for so many people who are given false diagnosis’s just to check a box. I have a lot of resentment toward my mom, but I try so hard to remember she raised and fed me my whole life and payed for everything I needed. I don’t know what happened, but as I got older, the more control my mother needed over me. It was too much. I wish I could help my mom realize her mistakes but she’s too far gone. She can’t see any other perspective but her own and will lie and deceive to make sure her image is upheld, even at the cost of her child. For some closure, I ended up dropping out of high school when my mom kicked me out on Christmas. I only had .5 credit to graduate because of all the extra classes I had taken. I went to live with my dad but he didn’t let me leave the house for 5 months until I turned 18. right when I turned 18 I had to find an apartment, work full time, and work my ass off. Anyway, I got my GED, enrolled myself and college and currently working towards a major in Epistemology and a major in music. I guess I needed to get more off my chest than I thought but I am just so proud of myself that I pay my own bills, I pay my own apartment and car, work 12 hrs overnight, get A’s in all my college classes, and I am not even fuckin 21 yet. All by myself. Fuck u mom and dad and stepmom and stepdad saying I wouldn’t make it a week on my own after kicking me out. I did that shit. And I’m not bipolar. Just a lame ass way to put the blame on your kids reactions instead of your own actions.
If you made it here, I’m so sorry to have wasted your time. I have absolutely 0 people to talk to in life, and I’ve just wanted to get this off my chest.

2023.06.03 11:48 Immediate_Buy_7053 What happens if i cross rate but I made rank from my previous rank. Would I still keep my new rank?
I'm currently a second class and I've been in for 6 years and I've been seriously contemplating cross rating. I'm currently an ET2 and want to switch to FTS YN. Im putting in my 1306 in August as I’m up for orders. I don’t know how long it takes for someone to officially convert out your rate. So my question is what happens if i don’t receive the news I’ve been converted before I take the SEP 1st class exam for ET1? If I find out I’ve been converted to FTS YN2 after taking the exam and come NOV when results come out, I find out I made ET1, would I still keep my rank and become an FTS YN1? Im just worried about me not being able to keep my rank and having to test again for my new rate. If anyone has any advice or suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it.

2023.06.03 11:22 dxjukez Partial Supraspinatus Rotator Cuff Tear Timeline
5 Months with no gym is hard asf. This is gonna be a long one, but if anyone cares here's the timeline of injuries on both of my shoulderfrom tendonitis, tendinopathy, tendiosis and so on. You will probably learn a lot from this that's why I'm posting it.
Injury Timeline
In short
12/09/2022: Experienced sharp pain during lateral raises.23/12/2022: Developed sharp pain in the right shoulder during flat bench press.13/11/2022: Pain continued during incline dumbbell press and triceps pushdowns.07/01/2022: Got new headphones and pushed beyond limits during a workout.17/01/2023: Experienced severe pain during cable lat row, began researching symptoms.22/01/2023: Visited an orthopedist who recommended rest for 2-3 weeks.06/02/2023: Followed up with the orthopedist, who referred to a facility for a month and a half. 10/02/2023: Started therapies at the facility, diagnosed with frozen shoulder.27/03/2023: Completed therapies, pain persisted and spread to the left shoulder.01/04/2023: Sought a private PT who diagnosed tendonitis, tendinopathy, and tendinosis.14/04/2023: Massaged shoulder with ice, experienced temporary pain relief.16/04/2023: Resumed physical therapy exercises, but the pain returned in both shoulders.25/04/2023: Consulted a renowned PT who discovered a rotator cuff tear.10/05/2023: Right shoulder healed, focused on therapies for the left shoulder.13/05/2023: Left shoulder pain subsided after therapies.28/05/2023: Experienced severe pain in the right shoulder upon waking up.01/06/2023: Pain alleviated after electrotherapies on the right shoulder.02/06/2023: Massaged left shoulder blade to alleviate pain and stiffness.03/06/2023: Developed inner elbow pain, potentially golfers elbow.
12/09/2022
First time having sharp pain when lifting to the side when doing lateral raises. stopped doing them immeditealy, still continued doing other exercises.
23/12/2022
I still couldnt do lateral raises at this point without any point. AND at this day 13/11/22 I got sharp pain in my right shoulder when doing flat bench press with dubmells. Was a dumbass so I went to do incline dumbell press and it didnt hurt there.
13/11/2022
Continued doing incline dumbell press and cable exercises for the chest where it didnt hurt. Incline dumbell pressing also started to hurt. And I moved all my chest exercises to cable chest exercises. Also worth mentioning when doing triceps pushdown my shoulder also started to hurt. And I got a couple of sharp pains in my right shoulder when doing squats because of the awkward shoulder position.
07/01/2022
Just got my skullcandy crusher evos($200 headphones) (they vibrate my ears).
I got so hyped forgot about my shoulder injury and maxed out the hardstyle and volume and got hyped.
At the time I did like flat dumbell bench press for 25kg x 10-12. Said fuck it and increased the weight to 27.5kg and did 10-12x reps.
None of the reps were lifted using my muscles but probably my tendons. I went past failure had a gym bro spot me to get out of those last reps.
This is probably when I really got heavily injured.
17/01/2023
The worst day of my life. The day I stopped going to the gym. I walked in there all happy hyped listening to my music. I was also hyped because it was pull day and my shoulder doesnt hurt on pull days. right? right?
Start doing my first exercise. cable lat row, do a warm up set think nothing of it. And go to my straight normal set. and boom right pain in my shoulder when pulling. This is the first time where I googled. “Arm hurts when raising to the side symptoms” and rotator cuff tear popped up and I googled “rotattor cuff tear recvoery time”, result: “6-9 months”. The pain I felt then, I was scared, I was numb, I felt the type of gut pain when you hear someone died.
22/01/2023
Go to a orthopedist he tells me to rest 2-3 weeks and to come back to see if the pain is still there. The next 2-3 weeks I spent every moment of my day overthinkin everything, Googling symptoms. Reseaarching studies. When I say researching I mean I red full on study papers which half of the terms I didnt even understand lol
06/02/2023
The 2 weeks have passed and I go to the doctor, the orthopedist and he wasnt helpful at all he just sent me to a facillity, he told me to go there for a month and a half and my injury would be healed.
The doctor was so unprofessional he didnt even tell me what injury I had or sent me to do any tests or perform any hand on test on me.
10/02/2023
I go to the facility and I was hoping they would send me to an MRI or ultrasound or anything else. They just diagnosed me I had PAHS(Frozen Shoulder) with NO other tests or hand on tests, they just said I have frozen shoulder at 16 YEARS OLD.
I get assigned 8 different therapies, from 4 differetn types of electrotherapy, cold, hot, physical therapy,
This is when I start to get mad but I still go everyday for 4 hours, and I skipped school for a month and a half. My pain was not getting better at all, in fact I think it wa getting worse.
The lady that does physical therapy literally gave me 30 exercises said to not rest between sets, and to do push ups? I lsitenede to her one day and the next day my injury got 2 times worse
27/03/2023
The therapies were finished, and my shoulder pain hasnt gotten any better, in fact my LEFT shoulder also started to hurt now. So instead of healing my shoulder the facillity worsened my injury. They asked me to extend the period of time for another month to make sure it heals. I told them FUCK YOU
01/04/2023
In Serbia healthcare is free, I said Fuck that and went to a private PT and paid him to get ultrasound done. My city is kinda small so it had no pts, so I had to travel for another 4 hours and back to another city to get to the PT. Long story short PT did ultrasound and he was actually kinda professional he did hands on tests like Hawkins, Neer… and then ultrasound came I was so nervous
He told me that on my right shoulder I have: tendonitis, tendinopathy, tendiosis
He told me that on my left shoulder i have only tendonitis
He told me to massage myself with Ice and later on do physical therapy - He also gave me 30 different exercises….
14/04/2023
For 2 weeks, everyday I would massage my shoulder with ice, and the pain was alleviated, IT WORKED! I was so happy and excited to finally go back to the gym.
I had to start doing physical therapy before that to strenghten my shoulders.
I started doing the 20 exercises list that he gave me.
My shoulders were kinda stiff though
16/04/2023
I was doing the physical therapy exercises, and boom the shoulder pain is fully back on both shoulders.
Why?
First of all there was a hidden injury that the PT didnt see, I’ll talk about that later on.
Second of all, Because I masssaged myself with ice it fully stopped the healing process for that hidden injury, it just removed the inflammation and pain. which is bad since inflammation is natural healing process.
Ice is DOGSHIT. Never use Ice for shoulder injuries. the RICE (RestIceCompressionElevation) method is also HORRIBLE.
25/04/2023
I just kinda did nothing to this point, and kinda gave up, until my father was talking to one of his friends and he told me that he found the best PT in Serbia. He was a PT to Novak Djokovic(famous tennis player)
I decided to go. I needed to travel to the same city as before(4 hours)
Went there and this guy was way better I could tell, Just by him telling me everything. He realised I knew the anatomy of the shoulder so he used the terms which I understood and helped me understand my injury.
Then he did the ultrasound.
“You have a rotator cuff tear” he said.
In that moment,
I almost started crying, because I thought “rotator cuff tear, I’ll have to do surgery. And then i’ll not be able to go to the gym for 6-9 months”
A million thoughts popped up in my head “How did that previous PT not see a rotator cuff tear on ultrasound, WHAT THE FUCK?”,
“I DONT WANNA NOT GO THE GYM FOR ANOTHER 6-9 MONTHS”
I got so scared. and asked “so what do I do?, do I now need surgery”
“No, No, God no, why would you need surgery?” he asked
I didn’t know you can have a partial rotator cuff tear. I thought it was just full tear or nothing.
I had a 5mm supraspinatus tear. which is only grade 1, he told me I could go back to the gym in 4 weeks, and my shoulder pain would dissapear in 2-3 weeks.
The injuries I had in my right shoulder were: bursitis, tendonitis, partial rotator cuff tear
The injuries I had in my left shoulder were: bursitis, tendonitis
He also sent me to one of his friends to do electrotherapy, magnet therapy and laser therapy for that 2-3 weeks. It was in my home town so that was a relief.
I went there for the next 2 weeks
10/05/2023
The 2 weeks have passed, and my shoulders are almost fully healed, they dont hurt except in very specific rotations, they dont hurt at rest. I just needed confirmation to start physical therapy. So I went to that same PT.
He did the ultrasound again, and told me I healed my rotator cuff tear and bursitis in my right shoulder and had only tendonitis left.
On the left shoulder I had both tendonitis and buristis. So My left shoulder was in a worse state than right now.
He advised me to do my left shoulder for 5-6 days and start physical therapy to prevent further injury.
So I went to the same friend of his and started doing therapies for my left shoulder
13/05/2023
Only 3 days of the therapies and my left shoulder stopped hurting anymor
The only problem was my right shoulder pain came back.
So I told the 1 guy to stop doing therapies on my left and start on the right
I realise now that I will keep getting reinjured if I dont do physical therapy ASAP.
17/05/2023
My right shoulder has decetnly improved, but they stopped working and were taking a 12 day break. I had some birthdays to attend, and was kinda busy at this time.
28/05/2023
I was on the brink of getting healed from my injury on both of my shoulders for life but all of a sudden one morning
I woke up with the worst shoulder pain in the right shoulder I’ve felt during my injury. Hurt like hell to move my shoulder at all (even lift it 15 degrees to the side)
Had to hold it with my other arm to perform the most basic tasks.
Probably slept wrong idk.
01/06/2023
After going to the same guy I went to for all therapies, and telling him to go as hard as possible on my right shoulder with electrotherapies.
Most of my previous injury symptoms were allivated. My left shoulder was almost fully healed, and my right hurts way less than on 28/05/23
02/06/2023
Felt pain to touch and stifness in left shoulder blade. So I masssaged it for half an hour, and the pain was gone next morning.
First time in a while doing some physical therapy, to strenghthen my shoulders so I stop getting reinjured.
Fucked around in class with friends throwing little mini frisbies at each other. I did that for solid 20 minutes while my forearm hurt which it had in the past but I also ignored it back then as well, but I ignored it cuz I was so present and just laughing my ass off. fucking around with friends. It hurt too much at 1 point and had to stop. Still thought nothing of it that day.
03/06/2023
Started getting inner elbow pain when extendin my arm to normal length. I think it’s golfers elbow. if it is I will need to wait at least another 6 weeks to go back to the gym. I hope it’s not
My right shoulder also started to hurt even less than on 01/06/2023

- Sydney Sweeney faced backlash for telling Variety that she had to "fight" for her role in Reality like other actors. She said, "I had to audition for it. I had to put myself on tape and send in my audition just like everybody else."
- Bryce Dallas Howard was criticized for sharing entertainment career advice without mentioning the leg up she got from her dad, director Ron Howard, who cast her in most of her early roles. On Instagram, she wrote, "My peers and I were fortunate to attend one of the best drama schools, but there was a massive gap. While school gave us an amazing foundation, we finished our formal training and still felt stuck because we were told our only option was to wait for someone else to hire us."
- On his podcast Let's Go! with Tom Brady, Larry Fitzgerald, and Jim Gray, Tom Brady said, "I almost look at, like, a football season like you're going away on deployment in the military, and it's like, 'Man, here I go again.'"
- Discussing the challenges of having a public-facing career, Alicia Vikander told the Sunday Times, "Sometimes, you go through things that are tough in life, and if you have an office job, you can step away for a bit."
- On the topic of being a working single mother, Gwyneth Paltrow told E! News, "I think to have a regular job and be a mom is not as, of course there are challenges, but it's not like being on set."
- On fellow nepo baby Hailey Bieber's YouTube show Who’s in My Bathroom?, Gwyneth Paltrow said, "As the child of someone, you get access other people don't have, so the playing field is not level in that way. However, I really do feel that once your foot is in the door, which you unfairly got in, then you almost have to work twice as hard and be twice as good."
- Ariana Grande's fans called her out over a since-deleted Instagram post, which she captioned, "When you're cute but you're also the hardest working 23-year-old human being on earth."
- Popular vloggers the ACE Family faced backlash for their video "WORKING AT A RESTAURANT FOR 24 HOURS." In a Snapchat video that Catherine Paiz, the mom of the family, shared while filming, she said, "Guys, we are literally working right now, at a restaurant. Austin [McBroom, her partner] has been making food for the past hour, and I've been taking orders."
- While accepting her Best Director award for her work on The Power of the Dog at the 2022 Critics Choice Award, Jane Campion said, "I'd also just like to give my love out to my fellow — the guys. The nominees. And you know, Serena and Venus [Williams, whose biopic King Richard was nominated for several awards], you are such marvels. However, you do not play against the guys — like I have to."
- On an episode of her podcast Anything Goes, Emma Chamberlain described why she thought having a 9-5 would be easier than being a self-employed influencer. She said, "Because you're an employee of somebody else, mentally, it's easier for you to disconnect after work so that you can enjoy all of your free time to the fullest without having to think about your job. Whereas, when you're self-employed...you never stop thinking about it.."
- Discussing her modeling career, Kendall Jenner told Love Magazine, "Since the beginning, we’ve been super selective about what shows I would do. I was never one of those girls who would do, like, 30 shows a season or whatever the fuck those girls do."
- In her episode of Variety's Actors on Actors, Jennifer Aniston said, "I feel so lucky that we got a little taste of the industry before it became what it is today. More streaming services — you’re famous from TikTok, you're famous from YouTube, you're famous from Instagram. It's almost, like, it's diluting the actor's job."
- After facing backlash for accepting the role of Tex Gill, a trans man, in Rub & Tug, Scarlett Johansson told As If magazine, "You know, as an actor, I should be allowed to play any person, or any tree, or any animal because that is my job and the requirements of my job."
- Discussing being an actor during the pandemic, Saif Ali Khan told the Quint, "During the lockdown, we quietly sat at home for six months, wasted our lives and lost our time. But now, when the government is saying go out and work to support the economy, we are in the frontline again. It's a high-risk profession, almost like working at a hospital."
- On Twitter, Addison Rae joked about landing a job as a UFC correspondent despite dropping out of Louisiana State University's sports journalism program to become an influencer. She said, "I studied broadcast journalism in college for three whole months to prepare for this moment."
- And finally, Elizabeth Hurley once called non-famous people "civilians." In 2000, she told Larry King Live, "I think for a civilian to go out with somebody in the public eye is a pretty awful proposition, to be quite honest."

2023.06.03 08:53 GlueGuy00 [Kalbrosky] NBA Big Board’s Rafael Barlowe reported that “several scouts and agents” believe the Thunder are targeting Coulibaly at No. 12 overall
https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/nba-mock-draft-amen-thompson-scoot-bilal-coulibaly "Bleacher Report‘s Jonathan Wasserman reported that France’s Bilal Coulibaly 'has a promise' in the first round before No. 14. NBA Big Board’s Rafael Barlowe reported that 'several scouts and agents' believe the Thunder are targeting Coulibaly at No. 12 overall."
Looks like it's OKC who promised Bilal to be drafted with 12th pick. Not Magic or Raptors.
Additional tidbits from the article:
-Whitmore scored 0.76 points per touch on drives, per Stats Perform, which ranked as the best among projected first-rounders
-Ausar had the highest defensive statistical impact (DSI) among players with more than 10 games in Cerebro-certified events in the league, per Cerebro Sports
-Michigan outscored opponents by 10.3 points per 100 possessions when Bufkin was on the floor, According to CBB Analytics. They were outscored by 14.0 points per 100 when he was not featured. That swing ranked fourth-best among all high-major players (minimum: 1,000 minutes) in 2022-23
-According to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo, Whitehead has been “unable to conduct workouts” after his recent foot surgery
-Prosper contributed positively to winning considering Marquette outscored opponents by 26.8 points per 100 possessions when Prosper was on the court relative to when he was not, per CBB Analytics, which ranked second-best among players at all top-tier Division I programs
-Opponents were just 14-for-38 (36.8 percent) when Lively defended them in the restricted area, per Stats Perform. Meanwhile, via CBB Analytics, the other team was held to shoot just 29.8 percent in the paint during minutes when Lively was on the floor
-According to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo, some believe Klintman “could have a promise” in the 20s. HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto added that “there was a belief circulating” that the Pacers are high on Klintman
-One concern for Howard is that although he is 6-foot-8, he only boxed out his opponent on just 14.0 percent of his opportunities. According to Stats Perform, regardless of position, that ranked as the lowest among all of our projected first-round draft picks
