This is sort of a self-introduction and progress post, but I thought I would share an experience. In general, I think the advice to make small, gradual changes is good. I approve of it in principle, even though I haven’t been able to build up from these changes successfully in the past. But that is not what happened this time. I didn’t really choose my approach, rather I was somewhat driven to it…but, it’s working.
How it started:
At the end of 2022, I was having a combination depressive episode and midlife crisis moment that was only exacerbated by the bacchanalia and enforced gaiety of the holidays. In an effort to climb out, give myself a project or two, and turn crisis into opportunity, I decided to try out a few simultaneous changes to my diet and lifestyle, figuring that if even some portion of them stuck it would be an improvement. On December 31, I did the following:
How it’s going:
Not bad, over all. I probably came in a bit hot. I track my daily weight, a seven-day change, and then a trailing week’s average of seven-day changes, and for a bit in January that average seven-day loss was over four pounds/week. OK, water weight. But my February average was three pounds/week, and by that point I think any water weight effect should have disappeared. I’ve tried consciously to eat a bit more to bend that down to two pounds/week or less, and that mostly has worked in March. But my energy is up, so I think I escaped unscathed. My face is narrower, my waist has dropped from a tight 36 to a loose 34, and a 43 jacket that I couldn’t button three months ago is loose around the middle. The 46 is now a tent. My acid reflux has disappeared.
Beyond a planned “cheat day” on January 6, when we had dinner over friends’ house, I’ve stuck to my meatless diet, although I’ve compromised on salmon on a few occasions, particularly at restaurants whose version of vegetarian is dreary or protein-less. I’ll probably land on some version of flexitarian long-term, because of social obligations and because there are places I travel where non-meat eating can be harder, but I’m trying to be strict at home. I kept to no (significant) alcohol – I do still cook with wine – from January 6 until March 10, when we went on vacation and I had a few drinks over a few days. Then I stopped. Then I had a Guinness for St. Patrick’s Day. Then I stopped again. Empty calories aside, this was to be demonstrated. Likewise, I would be happy to land as an occasional drinker.
I do cook, and my staples for winter were a variety of bean/legume stews - ribollita, a variation on lentil and beef stew substituting roast mushrooms for the umami element, pea soup without ham, a ground nut soup, variations on chana masala. Also some other soups, like seafood gumbo and clam chowder (minus bacon). I still do have pasta (puttanesca, for one), just watch the portion size. Also, I do a lot of stir-fries with tofu, tempeh, or shrimp. For lunch, I gravitate to leftovers, hard-boiled eggs, hummus, or a can of sardines with some vegetables or fruit. For breakfast, a bowl with some added fruit and greens and a bit of muesli based around yoghurt or cottage cheese, or sometimes some eggs. I also make up big batches of foul mudammas – Egyptian cumin-lemon fava beans – throwing in some kale or spinach or a bunch of cilantro and keeping the olive oil grace notes down. Other favorite things include unsweetened kefir, good feta, and, for snacking, dry-roasted edamame, which is what I reach for instead of the salty snacks (chips, pretzels) I used to love. Highly recommended if you are not specifically sodium- or soy-adverse; look at that protein, look at that fiber.
At the gym, I think I’m still making slight strength gains, which, without measuring myself constantly, is the proxy for my attempt to lose more fat than muscle. In absolute terms, I’m not strong. In relative terms, well, the ship of my 25-year-old strength has probably sailed, but I wonder if I can get back to where I was at 45 (without having been lean, then). Possibly that will have to wait for maintenance.
I live in a city where DEXA scans are commercially available and affordable, so I had one in early February when I weighed 213. That showed 136.8 lbs. lean tissue, 6.6 bone mineral content, and 69.7 lbs. (32.7%) body fat. I set 175 lbs. as an initial goal weight based upon the idea that if I can maintain those lean mass figures, that would bring me a few pounds below 20% body fat. Big if, but it struck me as a point at which I might want to take stock and decide whether I want to glide toward maintenance or recomp or something like that. Plus, it was a college weight I remember. Plus, it would be an even 50 pounds. Or maybe I’ll decide to shoot for 170 or 165.
The last few weeks have given me my first pause and significant setback. We went, briefly, on vacation on March 10 and ate out a lot for the next few days, and the hotel gym facilities were sub-optimal. I was paying attention, but not religiously, and not weighing myself. And then, at the beginning of last week, I came down with Covid, and while it wasn’t a bad case I’ve been dealing with that for the last few days and certainly not trying to be in deficit. I’m mostly over it now, and was able to go on a walk of a few miles this morning, but for a variety of obvious reasons I do want to take it slow in going back to the gym itself. Still, March 10 195.4 lbs. to March 26 191.2 lbs., but some of that may not have been good weight to lose.
Fun things about being over 50:
I have a usual assortment of joint issues: back, ankles, a prior shoulder impingement, and bad patellar tracking on my left knee. Just four days of no exercise with Covid left the latter feeling really sketchy. None of this is improved by weight, but neither does it go away magically with weight loss. I’m still not going to be a runner.
I also tried to push weight on legs a bit quickly, and gave myself a bilateral high adductor strain – aka a groin pull – that has been lingering for a good eight weeks now. I do miss rapid recovery.
My testosterone tanked circa 2021. This is not something I’ve addressed. There’s an inverse feedback loop between testosterone levels and adiposity, so I’ll be curious to see whether it comes back.
Likewise, I’ve been on a statin and a blood pressure medication for almost twenty years. They have had very low side effects for me. I’ll be interested to see whether my doctor advises weaning off.
Fat on my face made me look young; as I lose it I’m starting to see more wrinkles. Worth the price, but still.
Finally, let’s just say that forum advice to keep hydration up and get a good night’s sleep have been at odds when I’ve been getting up to pee four times a night!

I also still consume eggs and milk products. So pesco-ovo-lacto, but I have shifted to basing a lot of my meals around legumes and soy (tofu, tempeh). This was not primarily about weight loss or even health, but it has made me think about what I cook and eat.
- I stopped drinking alcohol. This, also, was not primarily about weight loss. I needed to start by determining how problematic my relationship to alcohol was.
- Then I figured that I may as well try to lose weight too. I eyeballed down my portion sizes, tried to eliminate junk food snacking, and aimed for protein and fiber at every meal while curtailing starches and sugar.
- I had never stopped going to the gym entirely. I’ve been going to gyms, off and on, for weights and/or cardio, since my teens. But my last real moment of high gym effort was 7-8 years ago, in my mid-40s, and it was eventually slowed by a shoulder injury and unrelated hospitalization. By late 2022 I was going 2-3 days a week, more or less just for cardio. This was certainly a good thing. But starting with the new year, I’ve been trying to increase my intensity, and on an ideal week now aim to go 5 days/week for strength and hypertrophy-oriented resistance work, with the standard goal of trying to maintain musculature while in deficit, along with 20-30 minutes of cardio in which I mostly try to get my heart rate up for a decent interval or two. On days 6-7, I usually get some walking in.
- I tried to start walking more in everyday life – notably, to/from work, which is about 1.5 miles away.

Primero les voy a contar como fue mi relación con Ex 1.
Yo realmente no estaba enamorada de Ex 1, pero el me rogo que intentáramos tener una relación, me insistió tantas veces que me canse y acepte la propuesta. El primer mes iba mas o menos bien, de a poco me fue gustando, pero en el segundo mes, el siempre quería tener relaciones sexuales cuando yo no quería. El se enojaba conmigo y me terminaba haciendo sentir mal para tener estas relaciones. Siempre que hablábamos por teléfono, terminaba las llamadas llorando, si me quería ir antes de haber hablado como mínimo 2 horas, el se enojaba. Básicamente me hizo tremenda manipulación mental y tuve que requerir a varias personas para que me den su punto de vista y termine rompiendo con el, cando rompí con Ex 1 me mando capturas de que me estaba engañando con otra persona desde el segundo mes.

Para que se entienda mejor, la fiesta era un UPD (ultimo primer día), por lo que Ex 1 iba a estar ahí si o si.
Después de la fiesta, vi los videos que mandaban o subían al instagram, y ahí lo vi, Ex 1 y Ex 2 juntos hablando. No le tome importancia al principio porque me pareció una charla normal, pero después una de mis amigas me dijo que Ex 2 directamente busco a Ex 1 para estar con el.
Esto me hizo sentir incomoda y me dio bastante miedo e inseguridad, yo sabia lo manipulador que era Ex 1, y sentía que le podría hacer algún mal a Ex 2 o sacarle info de mi.
Cuando le hable a Ex 2, le dije que no me parece bien, y desde cuando el novio de alguien se hace amigo del ex de su novia. El me respondió a todo esto orgulloso de si mismo y me trato de dramática.
Después me mando un mensaje dándome un discurso deprimente acerca de que el no tiene amigos y que no le puedo sacar esa oportunidad. Decidí no responderle porque todavía no podía creer que no le importaba nada como me sentía yo.
Al siguiente día no lo quería ver, necesitaba pensar para saber que hacer. La mala suerte es que es de mi curso, por lo que si o si tenia que verlo.
En el recreo estaba hablando con una de mis amigas para despejarme un cachito, Ex 2 vino a mi banco y le pedí que me deje un rato tranquila porque quería hablar con mi amiga. El se lo tomo a broma y empezó a decir que no se iba a ir y que no lo podía obligar. Se lo volví a pedir y el se seguía haciendo el gracioso, en ese momento mi amiga intervino y le dijo que si yo me siento incomoda, tendría que dejarme un rato tranquila.
Ahí es cuando se puso como un nene de 5 años.
Ex 2 apretó sus puños y dientes con fuerza, empezó a gritarme diciendo que era una controladora que no lo dejaba tener amigos, que el pensaba que la gente cambia y que le parecía estúpido que me enojara porque se hizo amigo de Ex 1.
Lo mas tranquila posible le quise explicar mi punto de vista, pero el me interrumpió acercado su cara a la mía para gritarme, vi que medio levanto el puño y ahí supe que era mejor irme.
(Algo que me olvide decir, Ex 2 me conto que había veces que explotaba y terminaba pegando a las personas, y que le paso varias veces con sus hermanas, es decir, les terminaba pegando)
Cuando termino la escuela, Ex 2 me mando un mensaje volviendo a decir que no le parecía que yo me enojara por que se hizo amigo de Ex 1 y me pedía explicaciones. Ya un poco enojada, le dije que no pensaba responderle por mensajes, y le dije que me super cagón que siempre quiera hablar todo por mensaje.
Después de eso me fui al club a entrenar, cuando termine recibí un mensaje de Ex 1, me mando una imagen donde Ex 2 tenia todo el brazo cortado y me pregunto si el estaba bien. Solo le dije que no sabia, no me sentía cómoda hablándole a el.
Al siguiente día estaba esperando para que se termine el colegio para poder hablar con Ex 2 y de paso decirle que necesita ayuda por lo de los cortes. Pero como me había hecho varias veces, no fue a la escuela.
Me enoje y me puse a pensar que hacer, le escribí a la madre de el para hablarle acerca de los cortes, ya que sabia que aunque le dijiera algo a Ex 2, el no iba a hacer nada. La madre me lo agradeció y me pregunto si Ex 2 me había pegado. Le dije que el nunca me había levantado la mano pero si que se puso medio violento y nada mas.
Después Ex 2 me mando un mensaje para hablar y le dije que no le iba a explicar nada y que quería romper con el, el me pedía explicaciones y le dije que no le iba a decir nada, se suponía que ese día iban a hablar y el no fue.
Al dia siguiente, a la salida me siguio con Ex 1 para pedirme explicaciones, y como siempre, el tomandoselo todo a broma. Le dije todo resumido porque si no lo iba a mandar bien a la mierda.
Cuando le dije, el seguía pensando que era boludo que me enojara porque se hizo amigo de Ex 1, por lo que ahora siento que realmente soy boluda e hice un drama por nada, por eso pregunto si realmente soy yo la idiota.
Y una cosa mas, aprovechaba mis estados para hablarme así el volvía a quejarse de las cosas de nuestra relación y que supuestamente quise poner a su mama de mi lado, por eso lo bloquee de las redes.

Ahora si viene lo del titulo. Yo entreno 2 deportes, entonces no suelo ir a fiestas ni nada de eso para tener energías en los entrenamientos.
Ex 2 quería ir a una fiesta para hacer amigos, ya que el se deprimía porque solo tenia amigos en discord. Yo le dije que no iba a ir porque entrenaba y el fue solo.
Para que se entienda mejor, la fiesta era un UPD (ultimo primer día), por lo que Ex 1 iba a estar ahí si o si.
Después de la fiesta, vi los videos que mandaban o subían al instagram, y ahí lo vi, Ex 1 y Ex 2 juntos hablando. No le tome importancia al principio porque me pareció una charla normal, pero después una de mis amigas me dijo que Ex 2 directamente busco a Ex 1 para estar con el.
Esto me hizo sentir incomoda y me dio bastante miedo e inseguridad, yo sabia lo manipulador que era Ex 1, y sentía que le podría hacer algún mal a Ex 2 o sacarle info de mi.
Cuando le hable a Ex 2, le dije que no me parece bien, y desde cuando el novio de alguien se hace amigo del ex de su novia. El me respondió a todo esto orgulloso de si mismo y me trato de dramática.
Después me mando un mensaje dándome un discurso deprimente acerca de que el no tiene amigos y que no le puedo sacar esa oportunidad. Decidí no responderle porque todavía no podía creer que no le importaba nada como me sentía yo.
Al siguiente día no lo quería ver, necesitaba pensar para saber que hacer. La mala suerte es que es de mi curso, por lo que si o si tenia que verlo.
En el recreo estaba hablando con una de mis amigas para despejarme un cachito, Ex 2 vino a mi banco y le pedí que me deje un rato tranquila porque quería hablar con mi amiga. El se lo tomo a broma y empezó a decir que no se iba a ir y que no lo podía obligar. Se lo volví a pedir y el se seguía haciendo el gracioso, en ese momento mi amiga intervino y le dijo que si yo me siento incomoda, tendría que dejarme un rato tranquila.
Ahí es cuando se puso como un nene de 5 años.
Ex 2 apretó sus puños y dientes con fuerza, empezó a gritarme diciendo que era una controladora que no lo dejaba tener amigos, que el pensaba que la gente cambia y que le parecía estúpido que me enojara porque se hizo amigo de Ex 1.
Lo mas tranquila posible le quise explicar mi punto de vista, pero el me interrumpió acercado su cara a la mía para gritarme, vi que medio levanto el puño y ahí supe que era mejor irme.
(Algo que me olvide decir, Ex 2 me conto que había veces que explotaba y terminaba pegando a las personas, y que le paso varias veces con sus hermanas, es decir, les terminaba pegando)
Cuando termino la escuela, Ex 2 me mando un mensaje volviendo a decir que no le parecía que yo me enojara por que se hizo amigo de Ex 1 y me pedía explicaciones. Ya un poco enojada, le dije que no pensaba responderle por mensajes, y le dije que me super cagón que siempre quiera hablar todo por mensaje.
Después de eso me fui al club a entrenar, cuando termine recibí un mensaje de Ex 1, me mando una imagen donde Ex 2 tenia todo el brazo cortado y me pregunto si el estaba bien. Solo le dije que no sabia, no me sentía cómoda hablándole a el.
Al siguiente día estaba esperando para que se termine el colegio para poder hablar con Ex 2 y de paso decirle que necesita ayuda por lo de los cortes. Pero como me había hecho varias veces, no fue a la escuela.
Me enoje y me puse a pensar que hacer, le escribí a la madre de el para hablarle acerca de los cortes, ya que sabia que aunque le dijiera algo a Ex 2, el no iba a hacer nada. La madre me lo agradeció y me pregunto si Ex 2 me había pegado. Le dije que el nunca me había levantado la mano pero si que se puso medio violento y nada mas.
Después Ex 2 me mando un mensaje para hablar y le dije que no le iba a explicar nada y que quería romper con el, el me pedía explicaciones y le dije que no le iba a decir nada, se suponía que ese día iban a hablar y el no fue.
Al dia siguiente, a la salida me siguio con Ex 1 para pedirme explicaciones, y como siempre, el tomandoselo todo a broma. Le dije todo resumido porque si no lo iba a mandar bien a la mierda.
Cuando le dije, el seguía pensando que era boludo que me enojara porque se hizo amigo de Ex 1, por lo que ahora siento que realmente soy boluda e hice un drama por nada, por eso pregunto si realmente soy yo la idiota.
Y una cosa mas, aprovechaba mis estados para hablarme así el volvía a quejarse de las cosas de nuestra relación y que supuestamente quise poner a su mama de mi lado, por eso lo bloquee de las redes.

So yknow the doors hotel? I think matpat missed some details. First its raining and the plants are all relatively green in the courtyard/greenhouse. So the hotel is in a location of high rainfall. Second, with El Goblino being a duende/Mexican. The hotel should be somewhere in the American southwest, Cali, Texas and Arizona that area. Third it is probably near a port or an airport somewhere which narrows it down to a few large cities. Its also abandoned so it needs to be a American southwest city with a high amount of Latino people, have large rainfall and needs to be in a desecrated area. Lo and behold, after a bit of googling, I narrowed it down to two areas. The Houston area and the Central Valley in California. They both have major cities close, (Houston Fresno SFO), have large amounts of Latinos, are very rural and have quite a bit of rainfall. They also have a few old hotels that were probably abandoned in the 1940s/1950s.

2023.03.26 19:31 JoseLunaArts Tips to drive in Costa Rica and some anecdotes
Driving in Costa Rica is scary for many newcomers. It is the 4th worst place in the world to drive. So fears aside, what are some tips to understand the life of a driver there? It is a long post, but I guarantee you that it will be entertaining as not only there are tips but also anecdotes.
Costa Rica was a place with farms in 19th century and roads were built around these farms to make horses and carts and from there it evolved to a city, which means that going around the block in many areas takes a long time. Farms were built so you see lots of streets getting into the farm that are dead ends.
Why infrastructure is in such poor condition
In 1948 a dynasty of politicians, 2 parties composed by the elite started to alternate themselves in power. So money started to go to their pockets instead of becoming infrastructure. So they build roads and then they fix pipes and break it. Or they intentionally plan to build some sections poorly so pot holes appear and there is company revenue in road maintenance reparis. There are many ongloing corruption cases where the elites are using all their power to evade justice in very unethical ways or use media to distract attention from the most important cases. So the final result is decades of poor urban planning, and good roads where you suddenly have a pot hole that will break your car, or unfinished works that could endanger you, or just roads without maintenance for years which had to be fixed by local population.
There is a curious anecdote from more than 20 years ago. The factory of jelly products, El Angel was formed by South American expats who did care about making a difference in the community. The road to Sarapiqui was in poor condition, so they offered municipality to pay half the price of a road. They needed that road to bring products out to the city. The project cranked up and the company started to pour a few milimeters of asphalt instead of the 6 cm thick layer it should have. The El Angel engineer noticed that and demanded to meet the correct specs. The company tried to dismiss him, but then he said that if that was the case, only the municipality would pay half the price, since their donation would not take place. So they were literally FORCED to build meeting minimal engineering specs.
This is why Costa Rica infrastructure does not look like South Korea. It has been decades of a corrupt oligopoly having control of infrastricture projects. And the toxic corrupt environment has not been fixed in this environment. If you want a stressful life, go to work there at MOPT. Politics is still corrupt no matter which party rules.
End result, infrastructure is like driving in the videogame Motorstorm apocalypse with utility poles in the street, Sinkholes in the street and surprises here and there, and other surprises. Did I mention it is the 4th worst place in the world to drive.
With a vehicle fleet growing 7% per year and streets not growing, it became cluttered and traffic jams are terrible. So do not drive if you do not need to. Or enjoy the life of spending hours in a traffic jam. This is especially true if you need to go to the airport to go back home.
Try to train yourself using Motorstorm Apocalypse for Playstation. It is a great game to deal with infrastructure susprises like the ones you will find in Costa Rica.
A decadent justice system
Since the 1980s the trend of setting criminal offenders free after the arrest made crime to go unpunished. Kids started to learn that stealing has no consequence and dishonesty started to htrive, so if you leave your stiuff unattended in a mall in the city, it is likely that you get your stuff stolen, not by criminals, but ordinary people. It is not that all people are dishonest but enough people are.
In march 2023 US government issued a crime alert for Costa Rica
Human rights NGOs here defend the rights of criminals, but not the rights of tourists and honest locals.
Close your windows, do not leave objects inside your car when you are not in it. And learn about where crime is more present. For example, Quepos and Manuel Antonio are known for having surf and tourists, but not too many people will tell you it got filled with crime there too.
Motorcycles everywhere and other demons
In a cluttered city where traffic jams turned streets into parking lots, people started to buy motorcycles and developed the habit of invading opposite lanes or use lines between lanes as a mototcycle lane.
So you will see bikers passing you in the left and in the right, and if you switch lanes, not only you must watch for other cars, but look motorcycles coming behind. They will get upset if you "invade their lane" as they feel entitled and they may start a fist fight or damage your vehicle if they get upset. Many of these bikers do not have license, and the police parking lots are fuilled with motorcycles for this reason, and many of them come from slums or poor neighborhoods where issues are solved with fist fights.
With cars it depends on where you drive. For example, Desamaparados canton has a culture of such fist fighting and bullying your way in the street. So if you drive in a place with such subculture, you may expect drivers to have that subculture. And these people do not stay always inside the canton, so you may find them elsewhere, just a matter of luck.
If you see people doing bad maneuvers that should even look like going against the law, stay calm and stay away, let them pass. You do not want to have a bad day or spend your day in a fight with some uncivilized trash people.
What makes them trash? The subculture of crime polluted people. Also a cluttered street and long hours of jams stress people. So more than just evil, what you have is a lack of mental health in the street, to a point where people may get violent in the cities.
So you need full awareness as if you were in a combat zone. Look front sides and rear and always know where all vehicles are around you. If they get in your way or they do dangerous things that would earn them a Darwin award, stay away from them and let them pass, because you do not want to deal with a crash or insurance paperwork, because that is not what you came to do.
Driving is a necessary annoyance to go to point B from point A. So, survive and once you are at point B, enjoy your trip.
If you planned to ride a motorcycle, do not. Life is not safe there if you ride one. Many drivers are aggressive and will not respect you.
Drivers do terrible driving, but most believe they are better drivers than everyone else. You even notice how bad they are when they drive a small car and they have problems to park in a spot designed for a big car.
Driving in slippery roads
When it starts to rain, even if it is a light rain, water will go under oil drops, so street becomes as slippery as it would with a heavy rain, even if it looks dry. So drive half the speed you would drive normally. This would save your life.
Unless you need to drive in rough terrain with a 4x4, rent a sedan because lower cars are more stable. It is easier to tip over a big car than a sedan. It happens in 2 ways. During collisions, big cars tend to tip over, and in case of evading maneuvers, big cars tip over more easily to the sides. Remember, it is Costa Rica, full of curves, not a flat desert in USA.
Check the tires because you will need to have the best grip.
If you drive above 40kph, your only option is to hit the brakes if needed. Evading may get you killed, especially in these streets.
Increasing your chances of survival
There are 3 things that cause 70% of deaths in Costa Rican streets:
If you do not engage in any of these 3 behaviors and you protect yourself against those who do, then you increase your survival chances.
Health insurance
There is a government institution called CCSS that provides public healthcare. For foreigners who plan to stay longer, getting a "seguro voluntario" (voluntary insurance) is a good option. basically you declare yourself as a freelancer with an estimated income, which is used to calculate the monthly fee.
May be for things like a surgery or chronic or rare disease it may take forever, but for most common health problems it is a great option. What common problems? You got diarrhea because you ate a bad food, you had an accident at home and got hurt, etc.
It will save lots of money. You do not need to worry about bills and most common medicines are covered.
The only catch is that seguro voluntario is voluntary to join, but to get out you need to prove them that you got hired by a company in Costa Rica, which will pay your insurance from that point on. Still, even if you need to pay it forever, it is always a great option to have a very affordable healthcare service. This monthly fee is the only price to use the service, so you do not care about money when you are sick.
This is especially useful if you send your kid to take college in Costa Rica using public school system that is free. No debt. Just tell your kid to not consume substances because I mentioned that criminals are xenophobic, so your kid will need to stay away from these troublemakers that will try to take advantage of foreigners. Having a car is a must unless there is a good bus service near you to connect you to places of interest. That is very rare to find. So a car is needed. It is better to buy a "seminuevo" car from car agency (new cars are not worth it) and save money to avoid debt. Used cars are a hassle in Costa Rica as they try to sell you garbage, and via internet you may get scammed in Costa Rica. And finding a reliable mechanic is like finding a honest politician. So consider finging a reliable mechanic as part of the car purchase.
Obviously you will need a parking lot, so consider that when renting a place. Learn with locals which are places where criminals live (almost everyone knows that), and find a place away from these places.

Costa Rica was a place with farms in 19th century and roads were built around these farms to make horses and carts and from there it evolved to a city, which means that going around the block in many areas takes a long time. Farms were built so you see lots of streets getting into the farm that are dead ends.
Why infrastructure is in such poor condition
In 1948 a dynasty of politicians, 2 parties composed by the elite started to alternate themselves in power. So money started to go to their pockets instead of becoming infrastructure. So they build roads and then they fix pipes and break it. Or they intentionally plan to build some sections poorly so pot holes appear and there is company revenue in road maintenance reparis. There are many ongloing corruption cases where the elites are using all their power to evade justice in very unethical ways or use media to distract attention from the most important cases. So the final result is decades of poor urban planning, and good roads where you suddenly have a pot hole that will break your car, or unfinished works that could endanger you, or just roads without maintenance for years which had to be fixed by local population.
There is a curious anecdote from more than 20 years ago. The factory of jelly products, El Angel was formed by South American expats who did care about making a difference in the community. The road to Sarapiqui was in poor condition, so they offered municipality to pay half the price of a road. They needed that road to bring products out to the city. The project cranked up and the company started to pour a few milimeters of asphalt instead of the 6 cm thick layer it should have. The El Angel engineer noticed that and demanded to meet the correct specs. The company tried to dismiss him, but then he said that if that was the case, only the municipality would pay half the price, since their donation would not take place. So they were literally FORCED to build meeting minimal engineering specs.
This is why Costa Rica infrastructure does not look like South Korea. It has been decades of a corrupt oligopoly having control of infrastricture projects. And the toxic corrupt environment has not been fixed in this environment. If you want a stressful life, go to work there at MOPT. Politics is still corrupt no matter which party rules.

Since the 1980s the trend of setting criminal offenders free after the arrest made crime to go unpunished. Kids started to learn that stealing has no consequence and dishonesty started to htrive, so if you leave your stiuff unattended in a mall in the city, it is likely that you get your stuff stolen, not by criminals, but ordinary people. It is not that all people are dishonest but enough people are.

Human rights NGOs here defend the rights of criminals, but not the rights of tourists and honest locals.
Close your windows, do not leave objects inside your car when you are not in it. And learn about where crime is more present. For example, Quepos and Manuel Antonio are known for having surf and tourists, but not too many people will tell you it got filled with crime there too.
Motorcycles everywhere and other demons
In a cluttered city where traffic jams turned streets into parking lots, people started to buy motorcycles and developed the habit of invading opposite lanes or use lines between lanes as a mototcycle lane.
So you will see bikers passing you in the left and in the right, and if you switch lanes, not only you must watch for other cars, but look motorcycles coming behind. They will get upset if you "invade their lane" as they feel entitled and they may start a fist fight or damage your vehicle if they get upset. Many of these bikers do not have license, and the police parking lots are fuilled with motorcycles for this reason, and many of them come from slums or poor neighborhoods where issues are solved with fist fights.
With cars it depends on where you drive. For example, Desamaparados canton has a culture of such fist fighting and bullying your way in the street. So if you drive in a place with such subculture, you may expect drivers to have that subculture. And these people do not stay always inside the canton, so you may find them elsewhere, just a matter of luck.
If you see people doing bad maneuvers that should even look like going against the law, stay calm and stay away, let them pass. You do not want to have a bad day or spend your day in a fight with some uncivilized trash people.
What makes them trash? The subculture of crime polluted people. Also a cluttered street and long hours of jams stress people. So more than just evil, what you have is a lack of mental health in the street, to a point where people may get violent in the cities.
So you need full awareness as if you were in a combat zone. Look front sides and rear and always know where all vehicles are around you. If they get in your way or they do dangerous things that would earn them a Darwin award, stay away from them and let them pass, because you do not want to deal with a crash or insurance paperwork, because that is not what you came to do.
Driving is a necessary annoyance to go to point B from point A. So, survive and once you are at point B, enjoy your trip.
If you planned to ride a motorcycle, do not. Life is not safe there if you ride one. Many drivers are aggressive and will not respect you.
Drivers do terrible driving, but most believe they are better drivers than everyone else. You even notice how bad they are when they drive a small car and they have problems to park in a spot designed for a big car.
Driving in slippery roads
When it starts to rain, even if it is a light rain, water will go under oil drops, so street becomes as slippery as it would with a heavy rain, even if it looks dry. So drive half the speed you would drive normally. This would save your life.
Unless you need to drive in rough terrain with a 4x4, rent a sedan because lower cars are more stable. It is easier to tip over a big car than a sedan. It happens in 2 ways. During collisions, big cars tend to tip over, and in case of evading maneuvers, big cars tip over more easily to the sides. Remember, it is Costa Rica, full of curves, not a flat desert in USA.
Check the tires because you will need to have the best grip.
If you drive above 40kph, your only option is to hit the brakes if needed. Evading may get you killed, especially in these streets.
Increasing your chances of survival
There are 3 things that cause 70% of deaths in Costa Rican streets:
- Not obeying traffic signs. Not obeting traffic lights or a stop sign cause lots of crashes. So obey traffic signs yourself and use the claxon to warn others as you get close to an intersection and do not drive too fast.
- Invading opposite lane. Head on collisions are one of the main causes of death. Going off road will usually be better than a head on collision. When I learned to drive I learned the priorities to evade. Cliffs, pedestrians, other vehicles, and pot holes at last. Memorize this hierarchy and you will be able to save yourself from a lot of trouble. I use to drive behind a truck that drives at the speed I want to drive, so any invading vehicle would crash against the truck and not me.
- Speeding. Crashing at 40hoh is like falling from a second floor, you get hurt but you may survive. Crashing at 60kph is like falling from 6 floors, you can only use breaks and keep driving in the same direction because streets are narrow to evade anything. Crashing at 90kph is like falling from 13th floor, not survivable. Crashing at 120kph is like falling from 22 floors.
If you do not engage in any of these 3 behaviors and you protect yourself against those who do, then you increase your survival chances.

There is a government institution called CCSS that provides public healthcare. For foreigners who plan to stay longer, getting a "seguro voluntario" (voluntary insurance) is a good option. basically you declare yourself as a freelancer with an estimated income, which is used to calculate the monthly fee.
May be for things like a surgery or chronic or rare disease it may take forever, but for most common health problems it is a great option. What common problems? You got diarrhea because you ate a bad food, you had an accident at home and got hurt, etc.
It will save lots of money. You do not need to worry about bills and most common medicines are covered.
The only catch is that seguro voluntario is voluntary to join, but to get out you need to prove them that you got hired by a company in Costa Rica, which will pay your insurance from that point on. Still, even if you need to pay it forever, it is always a great option to have a very affordable healthcare service. This monthly fee is the only price to use the service, so you do not care about money when you are sick.
This is especially useful if you send your kid to take college in Costa Rica using public school system that is free. No debt. Just tell your kid to not consume substances because I mentioned that criminals are xenophobic, so your kid will need to stay away from these troublemakers that will try to take advantage of foreigners. Hello All, first time poster and would appreciate any helpful advice you can share. Me and the family will be taking our first trip to DLP in the end of June. We will be staying 2 nights at Newport 3 days at the parks, 3 adults 2 kids (17) (12). Bought the Breakfast only meal plan but my main concern is the Dinner restaurants. Are there certain must do restaurants? I reserved Walt’s one of the days but the app won’t let me book Captain Jacks even though I have a hotel booking. Also what is the most popular ride we should rush to first for the Early Magic Hours? Your recommendation on both parks.
