Bordeaux town hall set on fire in France pension protests
Bordeaux town hall has been set on fire as French protests continued over plans to raise the pension age.
More than a million people took to the streets across France on Thursday, with 119,000 in Paris, according to figures from the interior ministry.
Police fired tear gas at protesters in the capital and 80 people were arrested across the country.
The demonstrations were sparked by legislation raising the retirement age by two years to 64.
Unions have called for further protests next Tuesday, which would coincide with King Charles III's state visit to the country.
He is scheduled to be in the southwest city of Bordeaux on that day, where fire engulfed the front door of the town hall on Thursday evening after a day of protests and clashes.

In Paris, generally peaceful demonstrations saw occasional clashes between police and masked rioters who smashed shop windows, demolished street furniture and attacked a McDonald's restaurant, according to Reuters news agency.
One police officer who lost consciousness was dragged to safety.
AP news agency reported that police forces used tear gas and were pelted by objects and fireworks, with 33 people arrested in the capital.

"I oppose this reform and I really oppose the fact that democracy no longer means anything," a demonstrator told Reuters. "We're not being represented, and so we're fed up."
"It is by protesting that we will be able to make ourselves heard because all the other ways... have not allowed us to withdraw this reform," another told AFP news agency.
The unrest also disrupted train travel, oil refineries and saw teachers and workers at Paris's Charles de Gaulle Airport walk out of work.
Popular tourist attractions such as the Eiffel Tower and the Palace of Versailles, where a dinner is planned for King Charles and the French president next week, were also closed on Thursday.

2023.03.24 12:32 -Bonjour-- Discovering the Southwest of Australia

During our 1st Australia trip we already spent some time in PERTH and therefore knew the city and surroundings quite well. Towards the north we had already visited the Pinnacles and Monkey Mia with the dolphins in Shark Bay.
Therefore, we now wanted to look at the rather unknown southwest. And it was worth it!
From Perth we first drove south through the so-called Wheat Belt to get to HYDEN. This is a place where you really only go to see the WAVE ROCK. After we checked into our room at the Hyden Motel, we visited the Magic Lake about 1 km away - the water there is poison green.
Because of the heat we walked to Wave Rock and Hippo's Yawn in the late afternoon. Unfortunately we couldn't stay there too long, because even in December there were many flies. Hippo's Yawn was formed by erosion and actually looks like a hippo's mouth.Wave Rock, 15 meters high and 110 meters long, is an amazing rock formation, created by chemical erosion over thousands of years. Rainwater created pink and gray streaks on the huge granite wave.
To get to Kalgoorlie - our next destination - one normally drives via Mount Walker, Narrembin, Merredin and South Cross. But our landlord recommended us to drive the unpaved road - actually not allowed with rental cars - from Hyden to the Great Eastern Highway - because this route is much shorter. And since the road was completely dry, we did it that way. We drove through the beautiful bush landscape with many flowers to the Great Eastern Highway, and on the approx. 2 hours long drive we encountered "believe it or not" only 8 cars.
KALGOORLIE is an interesting old gold mining town. We spent the night at the Quality Inn Railway. It was so hot there that we didn't explore the town until late afternoon. There are many historic buildings, especially on Hannan Street.
We drove to the Mont Charlotte Lookout with a nice view of the city and the surrounding area. Mount Charlotte is the site of the O'Connor Water Reservoir. The pipeline brings water from about 560 km away near Perth to Kalgoorlie.
The heritage of the mining pioneers is still alive in the city, although nowadays, of course, only modern mining technology is used.
Australia's wealth depends on its mines. After mining, however, it unfortunately looks like a lunar landscape.... But it is interesting all the same!
The next morning we drove to the Super Pit Lookout to have a look into the depth, where giant machines look like toy cars. The Super Pit is 320 m deep, 3.2 km long and 1.3 km wide. In 1893 gold was found for the first time and until today there is the largest open pit mine in the world, where gold is mined and since the 1960s also nickel, uranium and lead. We also visited the Mining Hall of Fame, where extensive memorabilia from the old mining days was displayed in a large open-air area.
We also drove to BOULDER. This town was merged with Kalgoorlie in 1989. In Boulder only the railroad station is of interest, because the Indian Pacific stops here.
From Kalgoorlie we went on to ESPERANCE. We stayed overnight at the Best Western Hospitality Inn, located directly on the beautiful bay. Esperance took its development around 1895 because many people set out from there for the Gold Spring. Esperance has a mild climate and very beautiful surroundings with many small islands, great beaches and huge nature parks.
The next morning we first explored the Great Ocean Drive near Esperance with some very nice beaches. We made stops at Rotary Lookout with a view of Esperance, the bay and islands, at Twilight Beach and Blue Haven Beach and at Pink Lake.
Another excursion we made was of course to CAPE-LE-GRAND National Park. The national park is located about 50 km from Esperance in southern direction. It is one of the most spectacular parks of Australia with the wild coast, the heath landscape, the granite peaks and the rocks formed by erosion. The first stop we made was at Rossiter Bay.
Lucky Bay has been awarded several times as one of the top 10 beaches in the world. The beach is simply gorgeous, but unfortunately the crystal clear water is so cold that you can probably only swim there with a wetsuit. Each bay is uniquely enclosed with striking granite rocks - simply picturesque postcard motifs!
The imposing Whistling Rock can be seen from far away. It got its name because it seems to whisper depending on the strength of the wind. The sound is created when the wind whistles through the cracks and holes in the rock.
Hellfire Beach - my favorite beach - is located in a sheltered bay and framed by flat rocks. The whole area with the beautiful beaches was completely deserted. After all, we were there for a few hours and didn't see a single person there. The Grand Beach is really - as its name says - huge, also with almost white sand. Unfortunately it was so windy there that we didn't stay there for long.
We went on to ALBANY. Before the harbor in Fremantle was built, Albany was the most important harbor for the British Crown in Australia at that time. Albany has about 16,000 inhabitants and has an extensive natural harbor in the bay "King George Sound". It is the oldest settlement in Western Australia. We were able to rent a nice little house in Albany for a few days. During a walk through the town we saw some nice historic houses. The former whale station is a museum. From Albany you can still watch whales very well. St. John's Church from 1848 is the first Anglican church in Western Australia and reminds of an English country church. From Mount Clarence you have a nice view of the bay and the city. From there we drove to Emu Point beach, but unfortunately there were many annoying flies, so we did not stay long.
The next day we drove over the French Bay Road to the TORNDIRRUP National Park with the Natural Bridge and the Gap. Here you can see fantastic rock formations, formed 47 million years ago when Australia and Antarctica broke apart. Unfortunately the "Blow Holes" did not "blow", but instead there were many annoying flies. The park is 3900 ha large and offers cliffs, crevices and spout holes as well as beaches and lush vegetation between the headlands. A point of interest is the Natural Bridge made of granite. From the "Gap" you can look into a 30 m deep rock cut.
We also made a "side trip" to the 1913 founded STIRLING RANGES National Park. Of the 298 km there we drove 42 km on natural roads. The mountains in the national park are famous for their magnificent play of colors and are partly over 1000 m high and altogether more than 65 km long. There are well signposted but steep hiking trails and many picnic areas. Outside the park is a replica of a 16th century windmill that was still in full operation. A Dutch couple runs a small restaurant in the original 1924 railroad building next door. The highest peak is Bluff Knoll at 1063 meters. After a picnic at Bluff Knoll Lookout we drove the almost 300 km back to Albany.
We continued our trip on Beach Road via Denmark with good surfing possibilities to WALPOLE-NORNALUP National Park. This national park is about 18.000 ha big with rivers, over 400 years old up to 70m high Karri trees with a circumference up to 20 m, waterfalls and many wild flowers in spring. An attraction is the 600 m long Tree Top Walk up to 40 m above the ground, where you get a good impression of the huge trees. Maybe this walk is one of the reasons that the Valley of Giants is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Western Australia
We stayed overnight at the Best Western in Pemperton. From there we made a trip to GLOUCESTER National Park. This park is best known for the huge 62 m high Karri tree. Since 1947 there is one of the highest fire lookouts in the world on this tree. From up there you have of course a fantastic view, if you dare to go up there. My husband was brave enough and climbed up to the "Fire lookout".
AUGUSTA was founded in 1830 and is the third oldest town in Western Australia. We stayed there at the "Holiday Unit Cove". A beautiful beach near Augusta is located in Flinders Bay, and again many annoying flies. This bay is especially popular with surfers. We still ventured - despite heavy rain - to CAPRE LEEWIN, 9 km away. Unfortunately we couldn't get out of the car, it was too stormy to open the car doors. In addition, the rain then became a real downpour. The next day we got out of the car at the lighthouse, which was built more than 100 years ago. Cape Leeuwin is the geographical point where the Indian and the Southern Ocean meet and is also the most southwestern corner of Australia. We still admired the "Water Wheel" that the workers used to get fresh water when building the lighthouse.
MARGARET RIVER was settled by Europeans in 1850 and became a center for agriculture and logging. Now, however, it is dominated by vineyards, as the climate is ideal for growing grapes. The town is located about 10 km from the sea, on the coast there are beautiful beaches and also ideal surfing. It was Christmas Day and we spent the afternoon at Gnarup Beach. We had tried in vain to enjoy a nice Christmas dinner, but unfortunately most restaurants were closed. And those that were open were, of course, fully booked. Fortunately, we had an emergency supply with us, which we then more or less "enjoyed" on the terrace of our room at "Comfort Inn The Grange".... The 2nd Christmas Day then went better: we made a wine tour at various wineries with a gourmet lunch in the program. It went to the wineries "Windance" - had for me the best wines, but they were quite expensive- "Flying Fish" and "Knotting Hill Winery". And finally we visited the Colonial Brewery, a real "hangout" for the Australians.
We continued via Dunsbury at the beautiful Geographic Bay to BUSSELTON. In this area there are about 30 km of beaches to Cape Naturaliste, ideal for all water sports. On the road between Dunsbury and Busselton two kangaroos ran across the road in front of us, which is rarely seen. Because mostly they lie dead on the roadside. Well, these two had survived at least for the moment.
The 2 km long 140 year old "Jetty" in Busselton is a wooden construction, one of the longest jetties in Australia and reminds of the beginnings of the town as a timber handling port. The jetty is only secured on one side, so you have to be careful not to take an involuntary dip. There wasn't too much choice of recommendable accommodation in Busselton, so we only stayed for one night.
BUNBURY is the second largest city in Western Australia and is located on a peninsula. Since the 19th century, the city developed into a busy port and regional industrial center. We had no trouble finding accommodation here, at the "Lighthouse Beach Resort". Bunbury is a good place to watch dolphins. In a large supermarket in Bunbury we bought supplies, because we had rented a small townhouse (Ocean Villas) for a few weeks at our next destination - Scarborough.
SCARBOROUGH or SCARBORO is a small town with about 12,000 inhabitants, 15 minutes by car from Perth. Directly on the beach is the only higher house - a luxury hotel. Otherwise there are luxury villas as well as simple smaller houses - often for rent. At the esplanade you can find restaurants, cafes and small stores. There is a supermarket and of course the "bottle store", which is almost obligatory in Australia, selling alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. A few minutes by car further north you will find a bigger supermarket, and fruit and vegetables can be bought cheaper in Wannerou Market a bit east of Scarboro. There is a bus connection to Perth if you don't want to drive.
Scarboro is known for its beautiful white sand beaches, but the surf is usually very strong. At the beach of Scarboro is actually always "something going on". The kite surfers or bodysurfers can be found on the beach every day in the conditions. On the weekends there are mostly events on the beach, e.g. competitions of the Baywatch teams from different places.
To Trigg Beach, 1.4 km away, you can walk along the promenade and don't have to trudge through the deep sand. South of Scarboro there is Cottesloe Beach or closer to Perth City Beach and further north Sorrento Beach at Hillarys - so you are spoiled for choice with the beaches. It was of course very hot at this time of year, and sporting activities - except water sports - are best postponed to early morning or sometimes late afternoon. Because in the afternoon occasionally came the "Fremantle Doctor" - that is a refreshing wind that blows in the hot summer from Fremantle towards Perth.
On New Year's Eve, we ordered a table in time in a restaurant with first-class seafood, because we didn't want to experience the same disappointment as at Christmas in Margaret River. It was relatively quiet in Scarboro that evening. We drank the chilled champagne in "our" house, since drinking alcohol on the street or on the beach is prohibited. This was also controlled by the police - well, maybe one has made bad experiences.
From Scarboro we also made a trip to JOODALUP LAKE to see the black swans, which to my knowledge only exist in Western Australia.
PERTH with about 1.4 million inhabitants is the third largest city in Australia. It is very remote, because the next bigger city - Adelaide - is about 2700 km away. Perth was founded in 1929 and is today a modern metropolis with high-rise towers, pedestrian zones in the center, shopping centers, many parks and a lively cultural and art scene. In the Australian summer it is very hot and dry, so the already mentioned "Freemantle Doctor" is always welcome. In winter, however, the average temperature is "only" about 17°. Perth is one of the most beautiful cities in Australia and is located at the Swan River and not at the sea as some might assume. The center is easy to explore on foot. Otherwise there are free cat buses with three different routes where you can get a good overview of the city. Worth seeing is the bell tower at Barrack Square and the shopping street "London Court". Directly at Barrack Square there is a much frequented "Hangout". The district of Northbridge is known for many restaurants and entertainment in the evening. Interesting for shopping is the "Outlet Mall Harbour Town". In Perth, despite many modern buildings, there are still historic buildings: e.g. Government House from 1864, Town Hall from 1867 and His Majesty's Theatre from 1904.
The approx. 400 ha large Kings Park was founded at the end of the 19th century and is located above the city center. In former times it was a holy place for the Aborigines. Today the park is still mostly original bush land. It is worth coming here for the beautiful view of the Perth skyline and the Swan River alone. Of course you can also hike and picnic in this large park. The Perth Zoo is located on the south bank of the Swan River and is worth a visit. If you haven't seen kangaroos in the wild, at least you have that opportunity here.
A special for us unforgettable experience in Perth was Australia Day. We exceptionally went by bus from Scarboro to Perth, because on this day parking places in the city are scarce. This day is celebrated like a big folk festival, especially on the banks of the Swan River, which forms a lake here. The Australians organize a huge picnic with the whole family. There is music everywhere and countless events and displays on the water with boats and in the air with helicopters and aerobatic squadrons. As it got dark, 2 helis flew over the water. One with a huge Australian flag, the other illuminated this flag with a spotlight. In addition, the Australian national anthem sounded, which was eagerly sung along. A "goose bumps" experience that we will certainly never forget. Finally, there was a huge fireworks display.
The SWAN VALLEY is mainly known for wine growing. The main town is Guildford. Of course we did not miss the opportunity to visit some wineries, to taste and buy wine. In the Swan Valley you can drive along the Swan Valley Drive. There you will pass the oldest church in Western Australia "All Saints Church". At "Oggies Ice Creamery" you can eat delicious ice cream. And in the German beer garden "Duckstein Brewery" you can drink beer.
We also took a trip from Scarboro to AVON VALLEY. NORTHAM on the Avon with many historic buildings is the largest town in the interior of Western Australia and is located in the heart of the Avon Valley and originated as an agricultural center at the beginning of the colonial period. Around 1890 the town was also one of the gateways to the goldfields of Kalgoorlie. TOODYAY is also home to 19th century architecture. YORK originated in 1831 with many historic 19th century houses is the oldest town in the Avon Valley. In all three villages there are suspension bridges for pedestrians over the river, the longest is in Northam.
The 18 square kilometers large WALYNUGA National Park is located in the Avon Valley. Here was one of the largest Aboriginal settlements in the Perth region. In summer the Avon River has calm, water-filled pools for swimming, but in winter it becomes a raging river with numerous rapids.YANCHEP National Park is located about an hour's drive north of Perth. The park, about 28 square kilometers in size, was established in 1957 and is rich in fauna and flora. Most people come here to admire koalas. We wanted to hike on the Wetland walk trail - passing Wagurdu Lake and Loch McNess. But unfortunately we had to turn back after 2/3 of the way. A bush fire had destroyed two bridges further ahead - was not indicated at the beginning of the trail...
On the 240 m long Koala Boardwalk you can observe the animals in a natural environment. They are busy either eating or lounging. The area for the koalas is a separate fenced part of the national park - so not quite "free range". But theoretically the animals could leave the area. he big gray kangaroos, which should also be in the park, we have unfortunately not seen - perhaps the wrong time of day.
In FREMANTLE directly at the sea south of Perth - which we already got to know well on a previous trip - there are free cat buses as well. A much visited "hangout" in this town is "Little Creative Brewery" with good pub food. You can also sit outside right on the water.

2023.03.24 12:22 its_all_pointless DO NOT DO NOT BOOK FLIGHTS FROM CORENDON AIRLINES. They are unreliable as F. I have just had the worst flying experience with them yesterday.

We were traveling from Gran Canaria to Düsseldof. The tickets weren't cheap either. It was 116 Euros for the ticket for each person.
It was a horrible experience. No online check in was possible in Gran Canaria, so we were in anxiety about how long it will take for us to do check-in and they gave us no info about when the check-in will open either. Then we realized that we reached the airport too early(3 hours before the flight time) because of not knowing when check-in will open, only to find that check-in was only possible only 2 hours before the scheduled flight time.
Once, we were done with check-in, the flight was told to be delayed by 40 minutes but the journey ended up being delayed by 1 hour at the destination. Once we reached there, there was only 1 exit for a medium sized Boeing 707, with more than 250 passengers on that plane. It took us nearly 15 minutes to exit the plane. Then we had to take a bus to the airport which took about another 5 minutes. I've never experienced such horrible exit from any other plane in my life.
All these delay accumulated to a nearly 1.5 hours of delay, which meant that we missed our connecting train to our destination, despite having an original gap of 90 minutes. It caused us so much problem because it was already evening and alternative train connections were hardly there. Fortunately, despite all these problems caused by the Corendon Airlines, we found another train connection without paying anything extra for the long distance trains, but cost us 2.5 hours of delay (plus 15 euros of taxi cost as it was too late, at 2 am in the morning, to take the local tram within our medium sized city) . But it did cause us a lot of physical and mental stress, all these after having fasted the entire day as it was the first day of Ramadan.
Overall, it was the worst air travel experience we have had in our lives. I will never ever take this airlines and will never recommend anyone.

2023.03.24 11:46 ArtIntoArtemis My boyfriend went missing in Glacier National Park. I think I know what happened to him.

Stan and I met shortly after I moved to Seattle. We used to joke that we should make up some sort of meet-cute to explain the origins of our relationship because the truth was far less romantic and far more mundane. That is, we met on Tinder, as everyone seems to these days. To say we hit it off would be an understatement. He seemed like the perfect man for me. He loved dogs, just like I did. And music, and art. Of course, there were some things we didn’t agree on. He liked horror movies way more than me, for instance. And snakes. He tried to convince multiple times that we should get a snake - that was one I knew from the beginning I was never budging on. They just give me the creeps, you know?
Things like that felt like they just added depth to our relationship, though. We moved quickly - not overwhelmingly fast, but a bit quicker than I normally moved in relationships. It just really felt like he got me. I found myself spilling far more details about my ex than I had intended on ever sharing on our third date. I was half expecting him to run for the hills then. My ex wasn’t a very kind guy, if you get my drift. And crying on a third date is never sexy. He just reached out, took my hand, and told me we all go through dark stuff. I felt heard.
“And who hasn’t had a fucked up ex?” He asked, offering me a wry smile.
A few months later, we were moving in together. Things were perfect. At first, anyways. Even then, it was just small things, really. It wasn’t long before Stan sat me down to talk to me about how I kept forgetting to do my dishes, for example. I couldn’t help but feel a little defensive - that particular week, I’d worked double shifts two days in a row. I’d barely even had time to sleep, much less address the dishes. Still, I conceded. He wasn’t wrong, after all.
After that, I realized that my clothes were a bit too revealing, following Stan pointing it out. I still felt a little defensive, but he assured me he was just trying to look out for me. Since this was my first time out on my own. He had several years of experience on me on that matter, so I pushed down my pride and agreed. He was just trying to help, you know? Just like he was when he pointed out that my friends weren’t that great of an influence, and that going out on the weekends wasn’t really fair to him.
Besides things like that, our relationship was great, really. We had countless happy photos together - he was never shy about posting me. The long, romantic captions he’d post alone quelled any doubts I had about how much he cared about me. Silly, I know, but it felt nice that someone was proud to show me off.
For our one-year anniversary, Stan suggested we go on a trip. He said I could pick, so I suggested a national park I’d always wanted to see. Joshua Tree, to be specific. We both enjoyed camping, and the outdoors, so it seemed like a safe choice. When I suggested it, though, I saw his gaze darken.
“That was Emma’s favorite park,” he said. Emma was his ex. The fucked up one he’d alluded to on our third date. He didn’t talk about her much - I always got the impression that he didn’t want to think about that part of his life much. So, I didn’t ask. As such, I didn’t know much beyond how she was some sort of biologist, and apparently 50 shades of insane. They’d dated for a few years right after she’d graduated college, and then she’d went entirely off the rails.
“Nevermind,” I amended quickly. “What about Glacier National Park then? It’s supposed to be really pretty too, and it’s closer.”
His face relaxed, and he smiled. “That’s much better,” he agreed. “Glacier it is.”
I was really excited about our trip. I was taking a whole week off work, I poured god knows how many hours into planning. I wanted it to be perfect - to really show Stan how grateful I was that he’d managed to put up with me for a year. The trip grew steadily closer, and before I knew it, we were climbing into his car, the trunk full of camping gear and his dog, Penelope, panting happily. We lived about ten hours away from Glacier. Not horribly far, but definitely far enough to warrant the planning I’d put in. The road trip there was nice, for the most part, aside from how I forgot to remind Stan to fill up the gas tank.
That was a close call.
We left early in the morning - early enough that I thought it counted more as late at night, to be honest. By the time we were arriving at Glacier, the shadows were growing long, surrounded by gold. We’d have just enough time to set up our camp, I thought. We went to check in at the ranger station.
Stan did the talking, while I pet Penelope behind him. I listened in on the conversation. It was mostly park guidelines, typical stuff like that. Stan, of course, was also chatting with the ranger like they were old friends. He was always charismatic like that.
“We figured we’d head out here to celebrate, isn’t that right, dear?” Stan asked, turning to me. I nodded quickly.
“Yep! Can’t believe it’s been a year already,” I said. The ranger, a youngish man with dark blond hair tied back in a ponytail, looked past Stan to meet my gaze.
“That’s wonderful! Congratulations,” he said.
“You wouldn’t happen to have any recommendations for things to do, would you?” Stan asked, shifting his weight so he stood in front of me. I almost opened my mouth to say I already had things we could do planned out - I had for nearly two months. I decided against it. Stan had told me recently that I tended to come across as bossy and condescending, and I was trying to work on that. Instead, I turned my attention back to Penelope as the ranger went over some trails and interpretive programs.
Eventually, Stan shook his hand, and we headed to our campsite. “I was reading about some trails we could try,” I offered as we set up.
“Oh, don’t worry about that,” Stan said. “I’m sure he just gave us more in depth info than whatever research you read.”
“Right,” I mumbled. The first night there was peaceful. We built a campfire. At one point, Stan dropped Penelope’s leash. She ran over to the nearest campsite. Luckily, the couple there thought she was just as adorable as we did. Stan invited them over to join us around the campfire. I was a little disappointed - I had pictured getting up early to head out on the hikes he’d suggested I plan a few months ago, and it had already been a long day of travel. Still, plans change. The couple was incredibly friendly, on the bright side. The girl was named Marie, and the guy Michael. They had been traveling in their van for the past six months. “You know, I always thought van life sounded like it would be amazing. Of course, we have her holding us down,” Stan said, laughing towards me.
“It was hard enough to get away from work this week,” I agreed, playing along.
“Well, a week out here is better than nothing,” Marie offered. The next day, we headed out on one of the hikes Stan had chosen, getting up a bit later as I had guessed would happen. It was pretty, I’ll admit, and I was beginning to feel silly for being so controlling over what we did. When we returned to camp that night, we had dinner at the nearby restaurant, and things felt like they were going nicely. This was the longest we’d gone in weeks without some sort of argument or me messing something up. After dinner, we stopped by the visitor center to buy some more firewood. When we returned, Marie and Michael came over again. Not to chat, though. This time, they had a question for us. Or more, for Stan. Michael tried to keep his voice down as he asked Stan if he’d heard anything strange last night, as Marie had been spooked by something. I surmised they were trying to not scare me as well, though I thought that was rather silly. We were in the woods, after all. It seemed like weird noises were to be expected.
Stan and I climbed into our tent that night, and sleep took us both quickly. It didn’t keep its grasp, though, at least not on me. I was awoken at some point in the night by something outside our tent. My first thought was that it was another camper, on the way to the bathroom and wandering off the path in the darkness. As I continued to listen, though, slow, steady noise suggested otherwise. It almost sounded like whoever - or whatever - was out there was circling the tent. I say whatever because it didn’t fully sound like footsteps. Instead, it almost sounded like something sliding. Scraping along the forest floor. I felt a chill run down my spine. I looked over to Stan. He was still fast asleep. I swallowed. The last thing I wanted to do was wake him up, especially if it turned out to be something as silly as a deer. Trying to steady my racing breath, I decided to instead turn my attention back to the noise outside. I attempted to reason with myself as I strained to listen.
We were in a well-populated, official campground - surely whatever was out there couldn't be that dangerous. Animals came into the campgrounds, I knew that, but it seemed like the odds of being attacked by some wild animal less than fifty feet from a ranger station had to be close to zero. Whatever was out there continued to circle the tent - I was sure that was what it was doing, now. I heard Penelope begin to whine - she’d evidently been awoken as well. I looked over at her, trying to make out her small shape in the darkness. I wanted to call her over to me, away from the entrance of the tent. I knew that if whatever was out there was dangerous, a few extra feet between her and it wouldn’t do much good. I didn’t dare call out anyways, too scared of alerting whatever was out there to our presence.
As I continued to listen, I heard the strange sliding noise stop. It sounded like it was right behind the tent. Right above Stan and I. I almost screamed as a low hiss reached my ears. That was enough for Penelope, evidently, as she collapsed into a fit of panicked barks. It seemed like a spell had been broken with her first bark. Stan shot up, and immediately demanded to know what was going on, as Penelope tried to claw her way out of the tent. There was a loud crash outside, then silence.
“What the fuck is going on?” Stan demanded, anger overriding any remaining sleepiness. I tried to recount what had just happened to him. The scraping noise, the circling, the hiss. I was barely halfway through explaining when he rolled his eyes.
“It was probably just a deer,” he said.
“A deer? It hissed!” I said, forgetting myself in fear of whatever had been out there.
“Deer make weird noises! God, I get the dog freaking out, but you?” Stan asked.
“I’m not freaking out,” I said. “There was something out there. Michael said Marie heard something too-“
“Marie probably also heard a deer. Jesus Christ, I didn’t know I was going on a camping trip with a twelve year old.” Stan said. I felt tears pricking my eyes. Things had just been going so well. Finally.
“I’m sorry,” I murmured. “I just got freaked out, you’re right. It was silly.”

Why Generators Are Important For Commercial Buildings?

https://preview.redd.it/6kiksmhhynpa1.png?width=720&format=png&auto=webp&s=fb3642ce23d89404a12f8d5b8c19573797af43c1

Do you have backup generators for commercial buildings at your place in case of an emergency? How would your business fair in the event of a severe storm? What would follow if your city experienced a regional power cutoff for public safety reasons?
The majority of business buildings lack prepared backup power, which is necessary to maintain operations in the event of a power outage. No company wants to suffer financial loss because of unplanned power disruptions.
Regrettably, when business facilities lose power and lack the backup system necessary to immediately restore services, money is lost. Power shortages in commercial buildings can affect all kinds of businesses by reducing consumer trust and causing IT obstacles, safety concerns, security hazards, and revenue losses.

What is the use of a generator?

A vital part of any strategy for business continuity ought to be diesel generators. If the regular energy infrastructure is disrupted due to inclement weather, animal damage to power lines, a brownout, an outage, or maintenance services, diesel generators, which are commonly powered by diesel engines, can safeguard your company's interests by restoring normal power. In this sense, it's crucial to emphasize that generators need to be properly maintained all year long.

What kind of businesses can benefit from such a setup?

Installing and operating a standby generator can be advantageous for any type of commercial enterprise, including data centers, office buildings, malls, airports, and shopping complexes. Commercial buildings should incorporate large enough gas and oil or Diesel generators Suppliers to power the structure's vital systems. These vital systems must be designed around the unique requirements of the building's occupants. With the correct generator, you can relax knowing that your commercial building (or the companies of your tenants) will have electricity when they require it most, regardless of whether you pick natural gas or diesel.
With Pinnacle Generators' business generator services, you can relax during blackouts. It is your responsibility as the owner or manager of a commercial enterprise to ensure that operations continue normally throughout a blackout. You might wish to build generators for commercial buildings to completely secure your business from power disruptions.

Unhindered Productivity

Your company will lose production if you experience a power outage while you wait for your electrical grid to resume operation. Purchasing a set of backup generators is a great way to guarantee that you can continue to be productive in the event of a power outage. Until th e power is restored to your company, your Diesel generators manufacturers will provide enough power for all of your operational requirements.

Preventing loss of data

It's important to have a steady power supply if your business processes a lot of data or holds sensitive client information that is frequently accessed. Your vital infrastructure must continue to operate. Emergency generators start-up in less than 10 seconds after the electricity goes off. When a UPS is included, the transition to the backup power source continues uninterrupted.

Absolute safety

The security of your employees and clients could be in jeopardy if your commercial enterprise is left without power. You should install standby generators for commercial buildings to protect the safety of your company. You can ensure that your equipment is operational and that your security and protection systems remain online by using a standby generator. You may program your backup generator to turn on automatically when the electricity goes off to provide you with a smooth transition. Pinnacle Generators is the best generator company in Hyderabad that you can trust when it comes to tasks like these.

Complete comfort

The lights and HVAC system in your building won't work without energy. Even if the rest of your neighborhood is without power, a backup generator will ensure that all of your leisure systems function. To ensure that your HVAC system is directly linked to your new generator, you can consult your technician. You may maintain the temperature of your building to your exact requirements by using generator electricity. If your facility includes processors or other temperature-sensitive electronics, this may be especially important.

Cost-effectiveness

The preponderance of your company's assets, such as A/C units, surveillance systems, machinery, electronic equipment, workstations, and other items, depends on the electricity in your commercial building. Power outages not only result in disruption, but the immediate outage itself can create electrical issues. In the scenario of an unplanned power outage, delicate equipment may potentially malfunction, necessitating repair, which can be expensive or add to the delay.

Summing up

Consider that you are seeking solutions to lower high expenses, avoid disruptions, and address the overall security and protection issues brought on by a power failure. If so, now is the time to make a business emergency power investment. Instead of setting up diesel generators or natural gas generators, you ought to make an investment in an ultimate control solution. To help you overcome these problems, Pinnacle Generators offers the best power backup plans and systems generator company in Hyderabad.
It's crucial to make your building secure in addition to keeping it comfortable. You lose important efficiency in the case of a power loss. You're practically out of luck while you wait for your building to get electricity again, so everything needs to be put on hold. As production deteriorates, you start to let clients down and miss opportunities. Additionally, even when it does come back up, you still lose time while your team reconstitutes and starts working again. Use generators for commercial buildings to ensure that your building is secure during a power loss.
We at Pinnacle Generators are interested in learning more about your particular power requirements so that we can assist you in choosing, installing, and maintaining the ideal generator for your commercial building.

2023.03.24 11:17 Ethereal_Stars_7 Like Rats: Part 015: Aftermath

Part 8 of the Jacklighter arc as everyone winds down.
[Previous] Part 014 [Next]
<<<<><<<<><<<<>>
Like Rats
<<<<><<<<><<<<>>
Part Fifteen
Aftermath... In Space!
Two days later in a Pax Enforcement waiting room in the city...
Black Tiger finished all the paperwork and reports then peeked into the waiting room to see how everyone was doing. He really should not have been surprised at what he saw. But he was surprised. And touched. The big grey Vulpes-Lupis was sprawled out on a couch contentedly asleep. Laying on his broad chest was the transparent rat also sound asleep, while reclining on his belly was yet another, the white female Llygoden Fawr, snoozing as well. Laying on another couch was the blue-grey cat and sitting meditating on his chest was the matching hued Llygoden Fawr. Sitting in a corner feeling out of place were the grey street peddler rat and his lithe Vulpes-Vulpes pit fighter friend.
Otel Rece opened his one hazel eye at the entry but did not move, lest he disturb the two using him as a mattress. "So how'd it go?"
"I want to say perfectly. But it went better than that." laughed the fox quietly.
The wolf grinned. "That is good. um... Sorry about causing so much trouble. I guess I'm headed for a prison moon after this?" he sighed heavily. "Or the Processor..."
The black fox grinned. "I'll let your newfound friend explain things when he wakes up." which got a arched brow from the wolf. And a smile, looking fondly at the little rat.
"Least I found what I'd been waiting for all these years. And so much more. I died inside when he took the blast for me. That horrible horrible day playing out all over again! I don't deserve such forgiveness..." he sighed bitterly.
"Major. -He- believes you do. He told me some of the things that happened that will not be going into any report but my own and certain departments that -need- to know."
That got a sidelong glance from the grey wolf. "Some will sneer that he broke at the end. When he did... what he did... But I know different! He reached beyond just bravery not once. Twice! He reached past despair. Defied it to be with his lady! And he thought so much of a foolish old wolf that he threw himself into harms way to save me. Seeing that... hearing -those- words at the end... I'll -never- forget it ever."
"I know you dragged me through hell and back... But you were also so kind and understanding..." came a familiar voice from his chest.
"Awake at last eh?" greeted the fox. "You had a pretty rough time of it back there. In more ways than one."
"I was just enjoying the soothing sound of his heart beat, the soft rise and fall of his breathing..."
That sent a familiar pang of memory and a chill up Rece's spine on hearing that. His son used to say the same thing when he was but a pup... "Hows your lady?" he asked gently.
"Just fine. Never knew Vulpes-Lupis made such comfy pillows." came another familiar voice on his belly. "Re-Gen, Spray-Flesh. Good as new. Kunouchi's leg is worse off than me." Eira said as she sat up and stretched. "How you doing Papa Wolf?"
He yawned massively, stretched and rumbled a chuckle. "Throats better. Tongue is patched. Fingers fine. That tooth you kicked loose is reset... And they repaired my kidney..." The last said with a reproachful glance at the way too smug looking white rat.
The colorful rodent on his chest smirked too. "Oh stop whimpering. You loved it."
"Can't deny that." grinned Otel.
Both Llygoden Fawr finally hopped off their fuzzy pillow and allowed Rece to sit up. The ghost rat padded over to where the others were resting too. "I see you found a quality pillow as well." he asked Unmei who cracked open one eye and smiled. Then unfolded from her meditative position and stretched.
Nana was awake as well and tipped his top hat off his eyes to smile at the teasing. "Mister Gold. Or is it Spectre? Or Seren? Whatever happens to me after this. I want to thank you for the chance at redemption you gave me. And the chance to witness the birth of a Kitsune."
Seren had to ponder that as it was a conundrum. And one he had been puzzling over and discussing with Eira and the Captain while he recovered from the severe beating he had sustained. There was also some worry about what effect having -eaten- someone would have on his body and his mind. But for now he had some momentous things to decide. "I think I lack the tails to rate." he ginned. "As for what to call me. Seren is fine. You likely by now have figured out me and Eira were not just some random grabs. Well we were randomly grabbed. But we are not civilians. You know what I mean."
"Yeah just call me Eira. I only use my callsign when on duty." the white rodent woman added as she stretched and stood beside Seren, pressed up against him. During his hospital time she had passed the hours watching and re-watching the holo-video recordings of the battle that the team had taken as per procedure. She just could not get enough of her Dynol being so cool and heroic rescuing her.
"As you will." the grey Bakeneko nodded and then sat up, transferring Unmei smoothly to his lap in the process.
Seren was thoughtful for a span and then asked a question of the old wolf. "So... You lost your Son to some tragedy and that set you on the course that led you here?"
Black Tiger tensed as he knew this was a hair-trigger subject with the Major. But to his surprise, Otel let out a long breath and then nodded.
"What are you an armchair Nightstalker?" groaned Otel.
"That was my reaction too when he came up with a plan to draw the Jacklighters attention with the banking loan." yipped the black fox, tail swishing in humor.
Seren shrugged. "Official Colony Detective. Which might be similar."
This startled the Vulpes-Lupis to hear that. "Arzand, my son, was on the force just like you. A detective." it was eerie the way this strange little Dynol was so similar.
"We have detectives sure. But usually as a precursor to joining the Nightstalkers." noted Eira.
Rece sighed. This was painful. But it was time to face that pain. "Arzand was in Pax Enforcement on the homeworld and I was stationed there too as we were working a case together. Damn Anti-Law 'activists' were spreading rumors and inciting violence. One got me in his sights. My son was faster. Leaped in the way. Died in my arms. I took his gun and killed every last one of them. Hasn't been an 'uprising' since. I buried myself in work for a time. But I started seeing things that preyed on my mind. Questions that kept haunting me. I saw people put their lives on the line plenty. But no one ever took the last step. Guess I snapped. Started hunting and challenging heroes and fellow Nightstalkers. Looking for that flame that burned and... never finding it. Never satisfied. Till I found you... Son."
"As I said before. You dragged me through hell and back. Challenged me to my absolute limits. But... You were also kind and understanding. Like you knew me." replied the transparent rat.
Otel felt a little embarrassed at what he was about to ask. "um... There is something really personal I'd like to ask of you, Son..." he fidgeted a little. "Could you... could you change... again, for me?"
Eira perked up at this. "Me too! I only got a glimpse of it before it poofed."
"For you I would never say no." then he churrred laughter. The lack of any hesitation or reproachment startled the old wolf. "Problem is... I have -no- screwing clue how I pulled it off or why? That was a complete first for me. I can try though. But it might be rather fleeting. That is how it was at first with this." and he ran his paws down his strange body. "I am starting to get a handle on some aspects. But I have -a-lot- of questions for people more informed of these things." he admitted.
"Fair enough. Thanks."
"Ok. Here goes. No laughing if this fails or I turn into some weird half wolf/fox-rat-man-thingy."
Eira snickered in the background.
Seren le-sighed and then got ready. "Since it happened when I was out of the Lygoden Fawr form lets try that first." and so the form dissipated into stardust and there stood the real Seren. Back in his Carrier gear even.
Rece leaned down to peer at and snort the little man curiously. "huh. Miamuta all right." he confirmed, and got a better look at the streaks of grey. "I have to ask. Just how old are you?" he asked a little embarrassed.
"Over Two-Hundred and fifty." which got the expected look of surprise. "That would be nearly two-hundred in galactic standard years since they are longer than human years." Moreso their surprise at the followup. "Alot older if you count around eight-hundred and fifty spent in hibernation on exploration ships. We explored reeeeeealllllyyyyyyyy sloooooooowlyyyyyyyy." he laughed. "No one is exactly sure how long we really spent on Exodus si we do not count it really. We know terraforming the first world took a thousand years. A bit over eight-hundred galactic years. But we have no actual idea precisely how long we were all asleep on the journey. It was supposed to take about a thousand years. But somewhere along the way the chronometer actually broke.
Eira piped in cheerily. "Best figures are most of the original Dynol colonists still alive are technically older than any of us have had civilization. Hey? I got curious!"
The old wolf chuckled in embarrassment. "And here I'm callin you Son. More like Grandpa!"
The red eyed rat girl smirked. "Great Grandpa. Times one-hundred."
"Golly thanks for making me feel young again you two!" groaned the Dynol ruefully while they got a good laugh. "Like said. I've had three trips to the Body Banks so physically I am not as old. And yeah it is not lost on me that my manifestations are apparently younger." Which got a thumbs up from the white rat. "Ok. Lets see what happens, if anything."
"You can do it!" encouraged Eira.
He positioned himself away from anything he might 'grow' into and knock over, concentrated. "hmm. I can feel -something- right on the edge? Rat I can feel clearly." He let out a breath, cleared his mind and started feeling around the sensation. Like a shape, or template? This had the right feel. He just had to coax it to the fore. Then his form started to become hazy, seemed to expand, coalesce into the wolfox manifestation again.
The white Llygoden Fawr took it in with a churrrr. "Whoa... That is so cute! Well, not as cute as us rodents. But that's not you Vulpes folks fault."
Rece nodded. "yeah... It's practically the same body. Just with that weird spectral effect? If I'd seen you like this from the start I'd have thought you my son's ghost..." he mused, eyeing the pup up and down.
Seren was curious about all this. "um... About the ghost effect thing. During the fighting and chasing down that rat... I think I inadvertently figured out how to do... this." and he seemed to solidify as the transparency of his form ended. And there stood now a blue-grey wolfox with white underbelly and markings.
"Screwing hells boy. You -are- Arzand!" Rece whispered...
"Cant hold it for long. Maybe with practice it will come." as he reverted back to transparency after only a minute.
Eira applauded the effort none-the-less. "Think you will be a grey rat too? I like those markings. Looks wicked!"
Seren looked to the speechless wolf and then padded over to him. "I think this is long overdue." and hugged the old hunter. "Welcome home... Dad."
Rece gathered the pup up in his arms and wept. "I know it's not... Arzand... But the resemblance is uncanny. You speak like him. You even say things he used to. On top of that you are a snarky little scamp! And you say you were on the force too? And those eyes! One of the best features he inherited from his mother were those bewitching eyes. Well that and her endless wit."
"An breedin hips! Lets not forget the important stuff here!" chimed in Eira.
The grey wolf snorted at that. "Tell me how someone born maybe thousands of years -before- my son died be practically him reborn?" he was thoughtful for a time. "I am sure the experts would try to explain it away as something like you somehow copied aspects from me. But you'd look like a young, well, me. Not Arzand. But the connection was there all along." he stated with confidence.
"I wish I knew. I am not even sure how this works anymore? It just does not fit anything I have read about this sort of phenomena. Maybe it is a cosmic coincidence?" he questioned.
"One hell of a coincidence if that is so." he sighed. "I am just thankful you gave this ol' wolf a second chance, Son."
Black Tiger, who had been quietly observing till now, smiled. "Good to have you back Major. Now I believe Spectre here has a little proposal for you, mister Nana, and miss Unmei." Which perked the curiosity of all three as they were offered seats at the conference table while Spectre resumed his rat form by dropping down to human then over to Llygoden Fawr.
The metamorphed Dynol/rat looked to each and smiled. "Today I received word that, ahem, Mister Gold and Lady Diamond's shipments were safely delivered to colonies in need of them and the profits have been transferred to our joint dummy account. A total of... One-Hundred Thousand credits." which got even Black Tiger to sputter in disbelief.
With s twinkle in her red eyes Eira just rested her feet on the table and churrred in pleasure. "Gets better."
The transparent rodent continued. "I discussed it with Eira and since there is a need for drones currently and we know of a sizable supply here... We invested that plus some of my own capitol in purchasing the four shipments worth of them that were available and they will be outbound on the morrow. Higher risk but was too good a chance to pass up. And the shipments will help the colonies. Win-win as they say. We expect a return in less than a week of something like... Four-Hundred Thousand credits."
Now even Rece was flabbergasted. "Hounds of Perdition! No wonder you were so confident you could cover my biddin!"
The white rat girl proudly hugged Spectre. "Oh he's got alot more that that saved up. Like SIX TIMES that. squeeeeee!"
The old wolf rested his forehead on the table. "I see he inherited his mothers business acumen as well." somewhere between laughing and groaning.
"Gets even better." churrred the red eyed girl. "Due to all your help it was decided to split the bounty and rescue reward earnings seven ways. Evil Foxy there, Sneaky miss Ribbit who is busy filing reports, totally innocent -but cool- me, Wonder Boy here, our Mystery Backup without whom this would have probably dug a really deep hole..." dramatic pause "...aaaaand Papa Woof and the Lucky Numbers couple!"
Black Tiger grinned slyly, tail swishing. "Not even including future kickbacks for turning in evidence against at least two dozen suspected Jacklighters... The rewards totaled to Seven freaking Million creds! Split seven ways that is One mil apiece! We went in expecting at best maybe a fourth of that." which got gasps from the three who glanced between themselves and back to Seren.
Unmei and Nana both demurred. "We do not deserve such generosity!"
"Had I any say in the matter there'd be a statue erected in that park to you three, and the twins, and their little lady friend, and mister Crydd!" headed off Seren passionately.
Which caused the blue-grey couples ears to blush redly.
But he was not done by far it seemed as Eira grinned as she had helped with the testimonies. "Oh he's not done yet. Gets better."
Seren grinned as well. "I have had a talk with Pax Enforcement and put forward all the evidence I have. Along with testimonies from others on your behalf. As of today Otel Rece has been cleared of eight charges of willful predation due to extenuating circumstances. Also seventeen charges of high predation have been remanded to duels. Which, while very frowned upon, are a much lesser case. Thusly he is on probationary status. With me and Eira as his guardians till such a time as he has worked off his debt." And still he was not done, grinning impishly at the looks he was getting. "Also due to conversation I overheard while tied up... I did a little investigating and conferring with Black Tiger and his team. Sooooo. In light of new evidence Koun no Nana has been cleared of seven charges of willful predation and in fact will be eligible for a tidy little reward when all the paperwork is done. Probably around one-hundred and forty-thousand creds."
The dapper cat could not believe all this was real. "That will at least defray some of what I payed for my allotment of captives. My plan had been to release them. I was there because the skein called me."
Seren nodded at that "Speaking of. You and mister Rece's expenses during the auctions has been reimbursed in full." he was enjoying far too much the series of surprised looks from each new revelation.
Rece was speechless for a time and then just let out a long long sigh. The black fox rested a paw on his shoulder and grinned. "You'll get used to it eventually Major."
"He even has the same generous heart as Arzand." looking to Seren he saluted. "I will strive to live up to such high esteem as you have blessed me with Son."
The translucent rat smiled. "Just continue to hold your head up and help those in need." after a thoughtful pause. "And I may have an idea or two for a project down the line. I will want the specs on your ship for one."
This perked Rece's curiosity now. "arh? Its an ol Interceptor that was going to be decommissioned after the war. But I signed it off and have been usin' it ever since." and he noted the lad perk up in turn, smile growing. uh-oh.
"Then that may accelerate my plans immensely. I will have to discuss things with a-lot of folk before I know if it is really viable." rubbing his paws together in anticipation.
Black Tiger grinned as he had been looking over Spectre's proposal and had an idea of his own that the Dynol had agreed with wholeheartedly. "As... hah-hah, luck would have it. Mister Nana here also pilots an interceptor of the same model. I have reviewed both you and miss Unmei's education backgrounds and it seems to me that a certain ever so handsome and dashing Vulpes-Vulpes captain of a carrier where a certain Dynol is stationed has some positions opening soon that Spectre here believes you two would be perfect to fill. Of you are interested. And if you are willing to go through the Supervision Fleet training?"
Unmei and Nana were taken aback at this offer. The last thing they could have foreseen. Bakeneko and Llygoden fawr exchanged looks and then in unison smiled and bowed. "We would be most honored."
"Great! I will put you through the proper channels and once you are through training I hope to see what amazing things you bring to the fleet." Then he turned to two others gathered who had been quiet and trying not to attract notice. "Since neither of you has done anything actually illegal, just frowned upon, the Jacklighter Foundation is pleased to award noth of you ten-thousand credits each for your part in breaking up the ring. And an expected twenty to fifty-thousand more from residual captures to come."
Dose and Ghost-eye just sat there open mouthed till Kunnoichi smugly shut them with a finger each. "You two were very brave and courageous. Thank you." Praise which got the rat and the fox's ears to redden.
"ahhh... t-thanks. I think maybe it is time I bit the bullet and took my Xeno-Med exams and got a real job." admitted Dose.
The black fox leaned down to grin toothily at the Llygoden Fawr. "Why stop there? With your skills and street smarts you would make an excellent forensics scientist."
Dose waved his paws in denial. "Wah? Me? No way I'd make it into the force!" but the spark of an idea was blossoming now and afterwards he sat there rubbing his chin and pondering it.
The white fox had been thinking as well. "Much as I love scrappin in tha pit. I... I want ta make a difference. Helpin people felt... really good." which got a nod of agreement from his friend.
"Pax Enforcement can always use more beat cops. And an already street-trained scrapper might see his career move forward easier as he needs less training. Me and my partner can connect you up with the right people. If you are up for the challenge." grinned the vulpine Nightstalker.
This got the pit fighter thinking as well, and a slow grin spreading across his long pointed muzzle at the idea of being a legitimate and respectable servant of the law.

The private meeting was ended and so Spectre invited all to a larger conference room where all the freed Llygoden Fawr were waiting. Two-Hundred and One. Black Tiger grinned as he took a seat beside the rodent. As did the others. Spectre took a moment to gather his thoughts before speaking. "I would like to thank you all for being so patient. I believe most of you will be allowed to go home or otherwise sort out your lived now that you are free again." he glanced around the table at some of the dejected expressions. Too many had lost all their savings to the Jacklighters. "It seems that a mere hour ago a, churr, mysterious benefactor donated an impressive amount of credits. Apparently enough to completely cover everyone's loss." which got shocked and then hopeful looks from those folk.
Eira, or Diamond as the civillians knew her, grinned, "Those of you who had taken out loans will find that all your loan data was cleared as well. So you do not need to pay that back now." which got some confused looks. Pleased. But confused. "One of the managers of the bank in this city was a Jacklighter conspirator." which got gasps of surprise. "He was the one tipping off the ring to prime prey. And then doctoring your loan data and covering it as a 'missing persons' loss. Meaning the bank, and him, was making credits via the centrum reimbursement system. Insidious." she growled. "He is now stewing in a Nightstalker belly." which got approving growls from many.
Spectre, or Gold as they knew him as, picked up from there. "We hope that this small windfall will help you all get back on your feet after days, weeks, even months in a cage. If any of you who were not loan victims have any difficulties then you can contact Diamond or myself for help and we will do what we can. And ironically enough, my own loan that got me into this mess payed off nicely and so I have personally added an extra thousand credits each to everyone's Pax recovery fund as sincere thanks for coming to Diamond and myself's rescue." which got murmurs of embarrassment from those gathered at being so praised.
Black Tiger held up a paw and spoke. "Since all of you saw mister, Gold's, expression activate so dramatically. We would request everyone to please not talk too much about, well, that aspect." which got knowing churrs from the crowd. "We understand that this is a big thing and we are not asking anyone to keep it a secret. But at least till it goes public we would really appreciate it if you did not spread it too far. I know I'd never be able to resist the urge!" which got more churrs and grins from all. "To that end we are divulging information to you all that -is- to be kept quiet." which got everyone leaning forward in curiosity.
The Nightstalker smiled as Kunnoichi limped in with her thigh in a brace while the muscle and flesh were regrowing. She took a seat next to her partner. Her belly was still fat and still squirming. "Guess that is my cue then?" she croaked. "As some of you have already guessed Diamond and Gold are not really colonists. They are members of the Supervision Patrol and were called in by us to assist in a Nightstalker mission. For now we would like to keep that aspect as secret as possible. So when you speak of the events and what you saw. Please refrain from mentioning their real names if you overheard them. Were it not for their presence we fear things would have gone far worse as we simply were unaware of just how close to the wire things were. Nor the horrible scope. Thank you all for your cooperation in this." everyone voiced their thanks for what Diamond and Gold had done.
The meeting was then ended. But not before many of the rescued citizens gave the shimmering Coblyn tearful hugs and pats. Seren called aside Dose, Ghost-eye, the red twins, the young lady they had teamed with, and lastly the calico father and daughter. Called aside for a little gathering while Rece, Nana, and Unmei relaxed on couches and listened in. "Eira and I have had our shire leave extended while I recover and get some Xeno-Med and Xeno-Psych testing to be sure there are no adverse side effects of what happened. I just wanted to again thank you all for all you did."
Eira rubbed the translucent belly as she looked at the little gathering. "Seren and I talked about this during recovery. On top of the other rewards that you all have received. A portion of mine and Seren's shares are going to each of you. An additional twenty-thousand credits."
"But it is you who should be getting an award mister Seren!" murmured Cryd, who held the pair's paws in his own. We had lost hope and then along you came and lifted us up! Some of those caught had gone so far into despair." Others in the gathering nodded empathically in agreement with this sentiment.
Seren squirmed under the praise but Eira wrapped a strong arm round his shoulder and grinned. "ah-ah-ah! No runnin away! Take your praise like a man. Or at least like a rat!"

One month later at the Supreme Command office at Latitude Zero.
"This is my report in full sir. As well as all logs and research notes on the Human. The findings are... intriguing to say the least." stated a blue newt woman in a Pax Command uniform as she slid the data packet over to the large seven unit tall red Salamandra sitting in the Supreme Command chair. "Llygoden Fawr Xeno-Med is good. But I ran the readings through our own systems and I must say. Even just the implications are breathtaking."
The Commander read through while she sat there and his big eyes got bigger as he worked through. "By the Depths!" he finished reading and then set the file down with shaking webbed hands. "Implications my tail-less tail! Even with the projected flaws in the power... You say he has already adopted not one, but -two- transformations? And complete metamorphosis no less?"
"Correct. I personally observed him gain and lose mass. Total conversion. Matter into energy. Energy into matter."
The Commander slumped into his seat. "Recommendations? Should we... intervene? What is your assessment of the human's psyche?"
She spoik-spoiked laughter! "I recommend we not get on his bad side! As for intervention? The Old Ones brought the human refugees here for a purpose. And this human is a part of that. As for his mind. Breathtakingly stable. He loses himself in The Beast sometimes. But his Beast is... benign. Focused on protecting friends and family."
"So far. You saw the reports on their homeworld."
She nodded grimly. "The nature of the Old One's project and my own research into the test subject required my clearance upgrade. These humans are very -not- the ones they fled. Otherwise they would have been deemed unsuitable for even the most baser tests. Or killed themselves off within half a galactic century." But she rested a webbed hand on one particular file. "But here is the truly intriguing part. Note the psyche profiles of the victims. Over half showed signs of deep despair, and half that were near terminal. But somehow... every single one is on the road to a full recovery. In part due to those legends of the Coblyn. But more from just his words of encouragement and putting his life on the line for them. And mayyyyybeeee a little act of predation."
"The Old ones are playing with fire! They think themselves akin to the Outer Gods and this little project of theirs may well burn them."
"Perhaps that is what the Outer Gods expect? Remember the abject failure of the Younger Gods? Arrogance and avarice. Or the eventual failings of every Age?" she glanced out the window at the panorama of the galaxy. "...By which sin the angels fell..."
The Commander also looked out the window of his office at the stars and then looked away. "...By which sin... we angels fell..."

Visit Al Qudra Lake today for an unforgettable camping experience; no doubt it is one of Dubai's best kept secrets as it's less crowded than Lahbab Desert or other popular areas nearby.

It contains 20 billion cubic meters of water and covers an area measuring 3 km2 at its deepest point and 1 km2 at its shallowest. As a result, this lake has become increasingly popular with birdwatchers due to its diverse biodiversity.
Al Qudra Lakes are situated in the Al Marmoom Desert, only 30 minutes away from Dubai. This desert oasis boasts several heart-shaped lakes including Love Lake (pictured), Logo shape of Dubai Expo and Heart shaped Love Lake. Visitors can camp or go for a picnic on the lake while enjoying affordable barbecue meals. Al Qudra also provides plenty of outdoor activities and makes for an ideal romantic getaway spot.
Best Place for Camping Outside Dubai City
Al Qudra Lakes Camping Resort is the ideal option if you're searching for a quiet location to camp while still close to Dubai. Not as crowded, but still close by, Al Qudra Lakes or Love Lake lies south of Emirates Road and offers plenty of restaurants and shops that will keep your spirits high while offering some peace and quiet away from city life.
When visiting this stunning campground, the ideal time to visit would be between spring and winter as fewer people will be camping here and that means more space for all visitors.
Nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers will adore Al Qudra Lake. Here, there are flamingos and swans galore, plus bike trails and an observation tower to enjoy the view. Not to mention that these tranquil waters make perfect picnic spots!
Did You Know Al Qudra is Not Just One Lake?
Al Qudra is actually an array of more than 10 lakes located in Dubai's desert. Popular names for these bodies of water include "Love Lake" and "Moon Lake", while recently added Expo2020 Lake was developed using the brand logo for Dubai Expo2020.
Best Time for Camping at AL Qudra Lake

At night Al Qudra Lake is an excellent camping spot all year around; however, summer may not be ideal due to its high temperatures; I recommend avoiding camping during this season and opting for spring or winter months when temperatures are more stable at night. These seasons provide cool evening temperatures which will make your camping trip truly amazing!
The lake area offers plenty of dining and shopping facilities, from noodles to ice cream.
When did it start?
Love Lake is an artificial oasis created by man in the desert. As you approach its edge, expect to spot flocks of birds (which may include pink flamingos) as you make your way towards the water's edge.
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, the Crown Prince of Dubai, unveiled Love Lake Dubai in November 2018 without warning to captivated attention across the UAE. With its picturesque backdrop of palm trees and sand dunes, there was no premonition before its presence was made known.
Other Activities You Can Enjoy At Lake Side
Love Lake Dubai is an eco-friendly park that provides a tranquil haven to relax. It has its own running track and you can rent bikes to get around. Plus, watch colorful fish and swans swim in the lake! Plus, this makes for great family bonding time too!
There's a picnic area with fencing, 3 jogging trails, and an oval badminton court. If you plan on staying the night, bring camping equipment as well as food/drink and your grill for cooking out. To maximize your comfort when camping, get there early; additionally, it is recommended that you bring along a trolly cart to transport all your gear.
Are you searching for the best outdoor activities and attractions in Dubai? Look no further than Love Lake Dubai - a man-made heart shaped lake surrounded by young Ghaf trees that gives it an artistic appearance. Perfect for romantic getaways, its turquoise waters and sandy beaches will soothe your senses, making you feel as if you've found paradise. Besides providing an idyllic atmosphere, its sand dunes and wildlife make this place the ideal refuge from everyday life.
If you're in search of some delectable food, look no further than the food park. In winter months, this outdoor eating establishment is a perfect spot to grab a bite to eat while watching hundreds of birds enjoy themselves. Spend quality time with your loved ones by the lake; there are several places nearby where romantic dinners or fun days out with friends can take place.
Love Lake Dubai's other draw is its breathtaking sunsets. Watching the sun set behind majestic sand dunes is an unforgettable experience and a perfect way to cap off an amazing day at Love Lake Dubai! Don't miss this chance for something truly extraordinary - book your stay now!
Does Al Qudra Ideal for Families to Visit
Al Qudra is also an ideal destination for romantic outings. Couples and families can spend a romantic night at Love Lake, a huge heart-shaped lake. At night the desert oasis offers stunning views that make for stunning stargazing or taking pictures. And if you're into nature sports like kayaking and canoeing - Al Qudra offers plenty of activities! That's just one of many attractions available at Al Qudra!
When you visit Love Lake Dubai, take some time to enjoy the breathtaking scenery. This lush oasis boasts over 16000 different plants and trees that provide a tranquil haven away from the city life. Plus, you'll get to witness some of Dubai's most picturesque sunsets from its shores!
Al Qudra Lakes are an eco-friendly destination to camp with families, offering stunning views of the park and desert landscape. It's one of the few lakes in Dubai with a healthy wildlife population - not only flamingos but a variety of birds who call Al Qudra Lake their home.
Experience an Amazing Sunset View

Love Lake Dubai is one of Dubai's most picturesque spots, marked with signs and easily viewed via satellite from Google maps. Not only does the lake itself resemble a heart shape, but its entire area surrounds it - designed with love and care to showcase Dubai's admiration of nature. Come join us and experience this idyllic oasis for yourself!
Campers love this popular destination and it can get quite crowded on weekends. If you're thinking of camping, it's one of Dubai's free outdoor activities - just remember to bring all your necessary gear! You'll also find many picnic tables around the lake where you can enjoy your meal while admiring its picturesque sights. Barbecue pits and toilets are also available nearby.
What to Know Before Travelling to Love Lake
Entry is free - no permits or tickets necessary
Don't feed the fishes or birds in the lake as this isn't allowed
If you wish to fly drones at lake side, a verified permit from authorities is necessary.
Winter camping is ideal if you're looking to escape city lights at night; summer nights can be too humid. When planning a night camping trip in winter, dress appropriately as desert temperatures at night tend to drop significantly lower than urban settings.
Please discard all leftovers (like charcoal) into the garbage area, as this can be hazardous for wildlife and aquatic creatures.
You can go there in any average car; however 4x4 vehicles are recommended in desert areas.
Other Attractions near The Love Lake
Other attractions nearby The Love Lake include

Are you an adventure seeker looking for an exhilarating adventure? Al Qudra Lake has the perfect 86 KM long cycling track - it's also the best way to explore the desert! All cyclists from Dubai come here for such a wonderful journey.
Cycling in the desert is best done between sunrise and sundown. If you don't own a bicycle, don't worry; there's a cycle store where you can rent one out for just $100. Even if you already own one, no need to bring it with you; everything can be purchased right there on-site!

2023.03.24 09:50 MonkBoughtLunch Trip Report: Frankfurt, Malmo, Kathmandu, Istanbul

Quick thoughts on some stays over the past few months mixing work and pleasure.
Hyatt House Frankfurt Eschborn
Wife had a work exhibition in Frankfurt and they booked pretty late so we ended up out in the suburbs in Eschborn. It's a Cat1 and not all that inconvenient with regular train service right into the center (including directly to the Messe Berlin complex where the exhibiton was). Rooms were fine, she's only explorist so didn't expect any upgrade (and didnt get one), breakfast is ok but it's the same small selection of cold cuts and a few hot dishes each morning so by the end of the week we were grabbing breakfast outside. The area between the train station and hotel are mostly business/office, so there's food around during the daytime but it mostly shuts down after office hours. Would stay again, but would look at options from other chains in the city center first.
Schlosshotel Kronberg
An SLH hotel in a little 'mountain' town just outside Frankfurt. Currently a Cat4 but will move down to 3 at the end of the month. A pretty old palace with sprawling grounds (also hosting a golf course, which we accidently wandered onto the driving range of, oops) that I booked for a pre-Valentines' getaway since we'd be apart while I was on a work trip. Romantic, photogenic, nice service. Small rooms. It's hard to get an uber, but possible to walk through parks all the way back to the little town, which has a couple little churches and a castle and etc plus more dining options. Would happily stay again, but wouldn't go out of the way to get back there.
Hyatt Place Frankfurt Airport
Cat1 airport hotel one train station away from the airport, with the station literally across the street from the hotel. The area surrounding the hotel is still more or less under construction so it's pretty dead. Rooms were fine, didn't ask or care about an upgrade. I didn't actually stay the night, but wife said the breakfast was fine. It's an easy pre- or post-flight, which is all I really cared about.
Story Hotel Studio Malmo
I had a few days to kill between finishing work in Copenhagen and flying to Nepal, so popped over to Malmo to check it out for the first time. Cat1 hotel a couple hundred meters from the train station, right on the waterfront. Service was friendly, Globalist got a category upgrade to a seaview room and a voucher for either the restaurant or coffeeshop (which I didn't end up using). Breakfast is fine but the space is tiny so you'll need to reserve a timeslot at checkin. Malmo was more interesting than expected and I'd happily go back to both the hotel and the town.
Hyatt Regency Kathmandu
At the end of a couple weeks work/play I wanted a chill spot, and this served well. Cat1 just bordering the Bodhanath area, which is one of my favorute parts of the city when I'm feeling lazy. There's actually a back gate that opens right into the neighborhood, less than 10min walk to the stupa along backstreets. Staff are great, breakfast quite good. I didn't get an upgrade on Globalist, though they did offer to move my on the 3rd night of my 3 night stay and I turned them down (to their credit, the hotel was super busy the first two nights so they legit may not have had anything available). The room I got was super dated and looked it - wooden floors scuffed, furniture had seen better days, etc. The public spaces all feel pretty renovated though. In lieu of a lounge, Globalists could have coffee/tea from the lobby bar 24/7 and from ~6-9pm there was a happy hour with free drinks and small plates (both of which they proactively offered to bring more of). Will happily stay here again in similar circumstances, but would probably push more for an upgrade next time to either a bettenewer room or at least something with a stupa view. There's also a Cat1 Hyatt Place now in Kathmandu but it's not nearby anything touristy so I've never had a reason to try it out.
Hyatt Centric Levent Istanbul
I've stayed here 3 or 4 times now, it's probably my favorite chain hotel in the city. My wife likes that it's across the street from a big mall with all the Turkish brands, I like that it's surrounded by little restaurants and cafes at Levent Carsi, and there's a metro station right out the door with direct line to Taksim, Sulemaniye Mosque (Vezneciler) and Yenkapi port. At a Cat2 now it's a tremendous value, but sadly it's going up to Cat3 at the end of the month and at that point with a 50% jump in points cost it's probably either start paying $ or look for something from one of the other chains (which are plentiful in Istanbul). Upgraded to a 'suite' this time (just a slightly larger space with a bigger couch) but I've gotten upgrades to their terrace suite in the past which is a nice little perk. I will say the breakfast is a little funny - the food and service are fine but the room feels like an afterthought that somebody decided to convert from a meeting space.

2023.03.24 09:30 Actuary_Kindly 5 Years Ago, I Had a terrible drinking experience. I am still under doctors care.

My bad if this isnt the place for this. I keep playing what happened over in my head and am trying to figure out why i am like this now.
A bit of background. I was born early. My parents say i was tiny when they took me home. Weighed less than a loaf of bread. I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, POTS, PCOS, Diabetes. Dont know if this is relevant either, but i accidentally broke my left pinky toe a year before any of this. (About November 2017, and i dint know if it had healed fully?) Among other things, some under investigation. I've been dealing with Psychosis since a few months after this happened.
I went with a friend to a convention in our city. It was a hit summer day and we were just having fun. We were drinking. Mainly hard lemonade and later Skreech (we'll get to this in a moment.) This was only my third time drinking and first time getting more than a little tipsy.
I didnt know my limit, was anxious and couldnt put my drink down. I black out in the bathroom. I dont know if i fall or hit my head or anything. There was a gap in what i knew was happening and was going on. This kept happening over the course of a few hours. No more drinking, just me and my friend trying to figure out if i needed to call my parents. Dreading calling my parents. And all around freaking the heck out.
The way i described it then and now still, is it was like i was time traveling. My parents pick me up. Im afraid im going to die. Theyre thinking of going to emergency but figure im probably just stupid drunk.
I make it in the door, still blacking out for periods of time. I throw up into the garbage. Family puts me to bed. My recollection is like i was sleeping and couldnt open my eyes but i could feel my parents holding me and trying to calm me down. Im apologizing and talking all kinds of nonsense. I dont know what this was?
I wake up a day or so later, really hungover. My head hurts, my neck hurts. My back hurts. (I still get pain at the base of my neck sometimes, which is actually what prompted me to write this.)
Something i need to add, is at the convention while i was tipsy around noon. Id bought a gas mask and was messing with it on. And the strap got tight around the left base of my skull and i couldnt get it off for several minutes. As well as contorted my body to do a pose like Dio from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
I mention this, because I had a bruise in the spot on my neck where it happened, that was really sore for 2 to 3 weeks afterward. ( As well, as a place halfway up on my back that flares up occasionally.
Jump to the end of September, I start having jumps in thinking and feeling like someone was talking to me in my head. Over the course of October 2018, I wasn't sleeping, was anxious. Was having thoughts that disturbed me. Like ideas to hurt my family going across my mind. Thought the radio was telling me things etc.
Times were stressful for my family anyways, financially and otherwise.
October 31st, I decide to go for a walk in the afternoon. I felt like running away or trying to stop what was going on myself. I just wanted to stop feeling that way.
My dad picked me up a couple blocks from home. I had started walking back after realizing for a moment either other option wasn't going to help.
I go into a hospital, into a psych ward for about 2 weeks. I was struggling until I was put on Risperidone and Fluoxetine and then switched to Olanzapine and my mind quieted finally.
I went home. Had some breakthrough symptoms. Gained a lot of weight and was diagnosed with Diabetes type 2 when my mom took me to emergency and it was found i had a blood sugar level of 33..
Ive been on several contraceptives to see if it might help balance hormones. Because a few months preceding all of this, i was on Spironolactone and had a terrible time. (When the doctors say limit salt and potassium, they really mean no salt and potassium. Stupid me, i was eating Pho noodles and drinking diet pop...)
Anyways, I've had more breakthrough symptoms in past months but am improving under doctors care. I'm on Abilify, Fluoxetine, Metformin and Mirvala, a contraceptive, now. My brain has gotten better over time and my anxiety has improved by leaps and bounds.
Anyways, sorry for the long-winded story.
I guess my questions start with could any of these things have caused my psychosis in the first place? Will I just be stuck like this, on medications now or is it possible I might eventually be near or fully recovered? Who do I talk to about this? Could psychosis be from an allergy to alcohol? ( my grandfather had allergies to any alcohol after change of life). And if so, why did it theoretically take months to happen? Convention being in July and started psychosis beginning of fall?
I just would like to understand. And I know it is likely I may never have an answer. Maybe this might happen again or to someone else. What if there is more to this, in terms of cause and effect on the body and psychosis?
Thank You in advance if you've made it to the end of this. I appreciate any and all advice.

They also know the best routes to take to avoid traffic and get you to your destination quickly and efficiently. Additionally, town car drivers are typically courteous and professional, ensuring that you feel safe and comfortable throughout your ride.
Convenient and flexible
Another benefit of using a limousine to JFK airport is the convenience and flexibility it provides. With a town car service, you can enjoy on-demand transportation whenever you need it. 2023.03.24 07:59 BigOlePuddin The Red King, Ch. 1

This is a noncanon story intended to be a sort of "tie in" to the Jenkinsverse taking place a while before the Vancouver Incident. I'm intending to expand the lore a bit in a few areas while still honoring what's already considered canon in the universe. If I get anything wrong lore-wise, scientific-wise, grammatically, and so on, please don't hesitate to offer criticism. Feel free to let me know if you like the story or not or if you just think it's a steaming hot pile of pure assplay. This is not only my very first attempt at creative writing, but it's my very first time posting to Reddit so forgive my ignorance if you can. I'll release Chapter Two very soon if people like what I've written thus far. Even if they don't, I'll release it out of spite anyway because life is pain, and that pain needs to be shared so we can all suffer together. All alien measurements are posted with brackets and their Earth equivalents.

Eight years before the Vancouver Incident
Elijah Prince awoke from a dreamless sleep, rising sluggishly from a hard floor to his full height. This was not the canvas cot upon which he had fallen asleep. Alarm bells were ringing in his head. His first instincts were to survey his immediate surroundings. He was completely naked. He hadn’t gone to sleep naked. This…this wasn’t good. A nigh profane understatement to make as he was encased in a clear…containment dome of sorts reinforced with bands of some unknown alloy of metal. The floor was apparently made of the same light gray material. The rest of the room was smooth, curved, and eggshell white. Were it not for the floor serving as an explicit contrast, this room looked like Steve Jobs’ idea of Purgatory. It was pretty Men in Black in design and appearance, albeit this room was undeniably a work of nonfiction. No, sir. This was all Papa Reality’s doing for sure. Dark yellow, holographic symbols (characters?) were vacillating in a fidgeting manner upon a darkish green background holoscreen of sorts all around his…”cage.” Maybe “bubble dome” was more accurate. No doubt the holographic panels were some sort of monitoring system. Medical data? Measuring his vitals? Checking the salinity of his piss, maybe? Only God knew at this point. A single, ovaloid door (also white) marked the singular entry/exit of this relatively roundish, white/gray purgatory of a room.
“Aliens. I been abducted by fuckin’ aliens, man.” Elijah’s Tennessean drawl echoed inside the confines of his bubble dome. He sighed and began massaging his freckled temples.
“Okay…why? By whom? For what purpose? How do I get my happy ass outta’ here? Should I even try to escape?” He rattled off his thoughts in rapid succession.
This room was clearly no work of humanity. If he was abducted, should he attempt an escape were it at all possible or would any attempt at such result in his untimely demise? Maybe they just wanted to probe his asshole and drop him off at a random bus stop on Earth afterwards like a cheap whore after servicing a morbidly obese, divorced dad in his Ford pickup at two in the morning? None the worse for wear? Worse for wear? If he cooperated, maybe they’d let him go. Maybe he should acquiesce to their twisted anal desires. Or maybe they’d turn his big, ginger ass into a vat of soylent green. Anything was possible at this point. Panic was quickly building in Eli’s brain, but he fought it down. He was used to extremely stressful situations, but this was definitely new territory for him. Where was he precisely? He was probably in space despite the lack of an exterior view of his alien iPod room allowing him a good confirmation of his assumption. He doubted he was in some secret government facility deep underground beneath the Himalayas or some shit. Unfortunately, Eli didn’t have the time to fully ponder his prospects for a proper course of action. The ovaloid door slid open with a resoundant Hiss! revealing a…well…it was an alien standing in the doorway.
“You gotta’ be fuckin’ kiddin’, man. Ain’t no damn way.”
It was the quintessential “Gray.” It was the stereotypical gray alien with the bulbous head, big black, ovaloid eyes, and spindly limbs. Frail looking. About three feet tall. Give or take a few inches. Naked as a jaybird. No dick was visible. Not good. Eli didn’t trust anyone or anything that didn’t have a dick. If you Googled “alien,” an image of this little fucker would likely pop up as the first search result. There might be green and blue variations of the gray skin tone, but it would be pretty damn similar. Elijah would have immediately accepted a squid man. Or a bird man. But this? Was this really an abduction or an obscenely elaborate prank? No. Occam’s Razor. What if all those country ass farmers who got anal probed weren’t just describing their delusions of experiencing a real alien abduction after having crushed up and snorted twenty Benadryls? What if the consistency of the aliens’ appearance was the result of a real, shared experience by dozens if not hundreds of backwoods corn pones having just been ass blasted by a cabal of extraterrestrial ass fetishists? Eli really hoped the anal probe thing was a bit of fanciful embellishment and not literal. He really didn’t like anything near (let alone inside) his asshole for a wide variety of self evident reasons. The red haired man was so busy postulating about the creature before him and its potential motivations that he hadn’t realized that the damn thing was trying to talk to him.
“Human. Male. Thirty two [years] of age. You. Yes, you. I know you can understand me. You’ve been fitted with a translator.” True to the gray’s word, a small, white orb was clasped to the front of Eli’s left pectoral by some sort of hooking mechanism akin to velcro, albeit it was affixed directly to his skin. He realized that he was hearing two voices: one was the high pitched babbling of the gray’s native language while the other was the English language albeit pronounced by the little alien’s voice.
“Who are you? Why am I here?”
“It’s none of your concern. You are Test Subject Red. Your species’ physiology has quite a few…unusual characteristics. This is a research vessel in Dominion Space dedicated to studying the anatomy and capabilities of emergent species. Your species is of great interest to the Corti Directorate. You will perform a series of tests. We will collect data on your performance. If you cooperate and allow us to collect the desired amount of data, you will be released unharmed back upon the surface of your homeworld. If you refuse to cooperate, then a paralysis agent will be vented into your containment vessel, and your body will be vented into the vacuum of deep space. Do you find these terms amenable?” The alien’s voice was decidedly male despite being high in pitch, albeit he couldn’t be certain. These things might not even have genders for all he knew.
“No. I don’t find ‘em amenable in the damn slightest, but I don’t got no choice now, do I?” A thin “smile” unmistakably curled on the face of the smug little xeno’s face. All in all, this was a shitty first contact with an alien species.
“A choice between life and death is no choice at all, true. You will be tested soon. For now…sleep.”
A cacophony of hisses beckoned a pale yellow gas into Elijah’s transparent prison. Darkness overtook him.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
“I still don’t understand why you felt the need to talk to that thing, Ranit.” The Corti woman was rubbing her temples with exasperation as she and Ranit were observing the red haired human stomp its way into the first test chamber from the live feed screen of the monitoring station.
“Jekra, you’re an expert in xenobiology, but you’re woefully ignorant of psychology. This thing is sapient. No matter how brutish it appears to be, it’s capable of reasoning. I had to establish dominance and lay out the situation, or the human wouldn’t comply with the testing.”
“We could have just used the shock floor and positive reinforcement to get it to do what we need it to. No need to bloviate, but I suppose that would deprive you of your monologues.” Ranit sneered at her. She despised her superior, but what could she do? The Directorate had put his smug ass in charge.
“Is the promise of returning it to its homeworld alive not “motivation” enough, fool woman? You’re not here to question my decisions. You’re here to collect biometric data. I am the director of this operation. Now proceed with the first test.” Jekra swallowed her pride and nodded in agreement.
“Human. Approach the weighted bar on the stand before you.” The red haired primate obliged…begrudgingly. It was angry. That much was clear. No matter.
“Using whatever passes as your primary means of conveying objec-”
“Hands and arms, you mean.” Jekra recoiled slightly.
“Yes.”
“Pick up the weight?”
The human stomped up to the pedestal, allowing Jekra to get the closest look yet at the newest addition to their research vessel. It was…terrifying to say the least. Well, all humans were terrifying, but this one was an exemplary candidate to being the veritable embodiment of that word. Humans were short by Galactic Dominion standards, but this one still towered over them by at least the height of another Corti…and a half. Give or take. Its skin was fair complected. Almost pink. Covered in reddish mottlings. Its entire form swelled with powerful muscles. Its face was brutish and primitive. A very short main of red stubble stood atop its domed skull. Its face was covered in a hefty patch of hair of the same color. It had two, forward facing binocular eyes. Rather than being a single, black lens as with a Corti, its eyes were comprised of a tiny black pupil surrounded by an intensely azure ring which itself was surrounded by a layer of pure white. The eyes were horribly hostile and alien. The eyes of a predator. Its reddish form was completely nude which was completely acceptable and normal for Corti who had a genital pouch to conceal their privates…but this thing? Its massive phallus was swinging gently back and forth with each stomp of its brutish feet like a pendulum and was highlighted by a tuft of reddish hair above it…like it the penile protrusion itself had a head of crimson hair. She was disgusted but fascinated all the same. You had to come to grips with being grossed out in order to study the biology of aliens after all. She was already aware of how powerful the immune systems of these creatures were. The suppressive implants and injections that had been performed on the human while he was unconscious were holding back the veritable deluge of nightmarish microbes within and without the red haired beast…which again begged the question as to why her boss decided to potentially risk being infected and wiping out the ship with Deathworld superpathogens just so he could “show the human who was boss?” Jekra had no idea. Maybe Rankit had a tiny cock or something.
“What kinda’ lift do you want me to do?” Jekra was taken aback by that question. What “kind” of lift? She hadn’t thought about it initially in her excitement to document this alien’s strength. It made sense, though. It would give her a good read on different groups of muscle engagement. But that bar was incredibly dense and designed to be impossible to lift off the floor let alone allow for “different lifts.” It was firmly bolted into the pedestal. The point of the test was just to examine the amount of force exerted upon it.
“Any lift that would be sufficient.”
“Sufficient? What qualifies as "sufficient?"”
“Just good enough.” The big human was clearly getting frustrated.
“Now how do I know what’s “good enough” fer yer precious ass? “
“I…uh…simply lift the bar as hard as you ca-” The sound of squealing metal and electrical cords ripping from the hollow tubing within the pedestal resounded throughout the test chamber. The monstrous alien had managed to lift the entire, obscenely heavy bar over his head.
“There. Fuck it. Clean and press. Happy, shithead?” She was not happy. She was feeling an entirely different emotion right now that was worlds apart from happiness.
“H-how!?” She glanced over to the shorter male. Ranit was equally shocked and dismayed.
“Gravity here’s weak, ain’t it? I already pieced that together when I was walkin’ over here. Let’s keep the ball rollin’. I got shit to do.”
“I-I, yes. Okay. Proceed to the next room.” The red monster grinned and jauntily stomped through the next door to the adjacent, cuboidal testing chamber…all the while carrying the ultra heavy bar over his shoulder like a toy.
She was stunned. Her boss was stunned. The entire point of this series of experiments was to measure the agility, strength, and endurance of a peak performance human and compare it to the examples they had on file of “average” humans to discern any weaknesses and/or ascertain what physiological aspects of the species they could potentially exploit for their own gain. But this? That bar had been bolted to the pedestal. It was so dense and heavy that it had to be loaded onto the ship and pedestal with heavy, industrial anti-gravity pads used in starship construction. There had been multiple force transducer sensors that were intended to relay the force imparted to the bar when the human (supposedly in vain) attempted to “lift” it. The biometric sensors in the room measured what and how many muscle groups activated when straining against something incredibly heavy. This was to be cross referenced with the data from the “average” human control to attain the [sarcomere] length and [myofibril] count in each muscle group as they were contracting. However…the force transducer had a hard limit of [205 lbs.] The human had produced considerably more force than that to rip the bar sheer from its bolting. But…how? The human control group wasn’t capable of this! Not even close! How strong could these apes get?! Ranit was the first to break the silence.
“H-he’s heading to the next chamber. We…should focus on whatever data we’re capable of collecting. We’ll worry about the implications of this first test later.”
For once, Jekra was in complete agreement with him. She followed Rankit over to the observation glass of the next test room. She wanted to get a good look at what this human was truly capable of with her own two eyes this time in case the cameras had malfunctioned or something. Not likely, but a scientist always strove for certainty.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Eli was a happy boy. Each test had been a complete breeze. That bar had clearly been weakly fastened with a weak set of bolts. All he had to do was deadlift it from the pedestal and snatch it into position for a good press. It was a hell of a lot lighter than they had made it out to be. The agility test had been just as easy. It’d just been hopping from one elevated platform to another. The fifty pound bar on his shoulder was hardly a problem. Microgravity was pretty fun, he had to admit. The sheer shock and panic the (female?) voice exhibited whenever Eli did basic bitch, vanilla shit brought him an alarming amount of joy as a bonus. However, the entire time he was performing the tests, he was scanning for potential exits and structural weaknesses in the test chambers. Those flimsy ass ovaloid doors wouldn’t be enough to stop him, but he needed to have a better understanding of the layout of this ship. After the (male?) alien had provided him the ultimatum, it solidified one, crude fact about his tenure aboard this ship: These aliens likely had no intention of setting him free whether he cooperated or not. Anyone who delivered a promise of freedom with the threat of death as an alternative never intended to make good on the promise of the former considering how it required an immoral calculus to even propose the threat in the first place. It implied that Eli was entirely replaceable and/or a liability if he survived. Otherwise the threat wouldn’t have been needed or even imposed post-capture. These aliens were smart, sure, but they were oddly naive considering their intellect. The aliens didn’t even question why he was bringing the weighted bar with him.
They probably thought it was some sort of oonga boonga ass, primitive trophy for the human to show off later…Eli knew there would be no “later,” though. The bar was actually hollow. One end had been shorn open with his prior exertions. A small, rubberlike gasket was dangling from an electrical wire of sorts with an opening in the center. Some kind of electrical insulation. It was just big enough for the human to get a seal on his face around it, beard or no beard. He had crammed the gasket and wire into the hollow bar. Perfect. An improvised oxygen canister. The air was thinner here than on Earth, and the O2 would be pretty stale and unpleasant to breathe, but it would at least give him enough air to stay conscious long enough to maybe identify whence they were piping in that knockout gas in his containment bubble. Maybe he could find a way to clog the vents. Hoping was better than nothing after all, and Eli was hardly willing to leave his survival to the whims of his abductors. One of the things he’d learned during his SERE training at the MRTC was that anything is a tool/weapon with enough creativity applied. Adaptability and improvisation were often the difference between life and death in a situation like this. Eli continued on to another strength test while swinging his bar back and forth to “force” more air into it. He wasn’t sure if it would work or not, but it was better to try than do nothing. The human proceeded to the middle of the large, white, and cuboidal room. A massive, metal crate of an unknown alloy sat in the middle of the room with a series of horizontal lines spaced an equal distance apart from one another. An unknown alien script was at the exterior of each line likely serving as a denotation of distance. It was pretty obvious what they intended he should do. The (female?) alien voice from before chimed in over the comms.
“Alright, human. Your next tes-are you seriously going to carry that bar with you everywhere?”
“Yeah. It’s mine. I earned it.” It was a stupid answer, but they already assumed him to be a knuckle dragger…a smart knuckle dragger but knuckle dragger nonetheless.
“Don’t even think of using that thing as a weapon. We’ll vent the room with paralytic agent if you try anything.” The (male?) voice could be heard quietly in the background (whispering?) He didn’t know he could be heard in the test chamber apparently.
“Don’t worry about the bar. We’ll confiscate it from him after he finishes this last test when we vent the room. We’ll void him out the airlock afterwards once we get the data. He can’t do any damage with it.” Anger flushed Eli’s face, but he kept his emotions in check. It confirmed his suspicions.
“Alright…the object of this next test is t-”
“Push the crate as far as I can. The lines measure the distance I pushed it.” The female (Eli was now banking on these aliens having genders) voice was clearly annoyed at being interrupted.
“Yes. Correct. Commence testing. Take your time.”
Eli quickly scanned the room. This was going to be either his final few minutes of life or the time he made a daring egress from an alien vessel. He looked up at the wall opposite of the one he was standing…yes. Perfect. Eli grinned. A reflective panel of (glass?) was visible high up on the wall. He bet that was a two way mirror of sorts. A potential exit. Judging by how light the gravity was here, he bet he could bust right through that. And the crate? Perfect. Eli took a series of deep breaths and charged the massive metal crate. He pressed the hollow bar against it and pushed with all his might. The crate was a LOT lighter than it appeared to be as seemed to be the theme out here in spooky space. Only about 300-320 lbs. Eli himself weighed 315. Hell, he could’ve picked up the crate and ran with it like an atlas ball if it weren’t so damned bulky. The smoothness of the floor also helped a lot with his forward momentum. Before long, the crate was rapidly sliding towards the far wall. Closer. He needed to get closer. The female voice was counting in fives for each measure of distance he pushed. 5, 10, 15, etc. He could hear the astonishment in her voice, but that astonishment turned to confusion when he passed the final distance marker…and kept going.
“Stop! You’ve completed the test!” Eli ignored her and continued pushing.
“Stop, you imbecile! We command you to stop pushing!” Eli ignored her. The massive crate slammed against the far wall with a resounding echo and such force that the glass panel vibrated. Perfect. That was definitely an observation area.
“Finally, you stupid primitive. Not that it matters. We got the test data we needed. Time to say goodby-hey, what are you doing?!” Eli quickly leapt atop the metal crate. He looked up at the glass panel. The male voice chimed in with a panicked tone.
“Jeckra! Vent the test chamber! He’s trying to climb up here!!”
“How?! That’s impossible! We’re [15 feet] away from him up here!” They really shouldn’t have told him that. These aliens didn’t handle stress terribly well.
“Just do it, damn you!!” The sound of hissing filled the room.
Boy, was Eli ever lucky. He figured they could vent that knockout gas into whichever room he was intended to be in considering his brute strength. Thank God for that metal bar. He placed the gasket over his face and took small shallow breaths. Controlling his breathing was an absolute necessity here after all the strenuous pushing he’d just done. The familiar cloud of pale yellow gas was filling the room…but his improvised gas mask was working. The gas stung his eyes a bit. Before long, his eyes were tearing up a bit. Eli looked back up to the panel. There was no ledge of any sort. He couldn’t gamble on trying to punch through the glass. For all he knew, he’d absorb the knockout gas through his skin or something if he stuck around too long making multiple attempts at punching the shit out of the glass. He needed something harder than bone to be certain with the time limit he potentially had here. That meant he’d only get one shot at this. Elijah squatted as low as his legs would allow while the aliens screamed random, panicked obscenities over the intercom. He took a deep breath from his makeshift oxygen supply and leapt with all his might. He was airborne. Just level with the two way mirror. He removed the metal bar from his face and launched it at the glass as hard as he could. It shattered, exposing a sleek, white control room…and the terrified faces of two, gray E.T.’s. Elijah let gravity carry him back down into the cloud of gas while still holding his breath.
“Jeckra! *cough* *cough* Turn off the gas! Vent it out of the room, or we’re dead!” Eli smiled. A taste of their own medicine.
“*cough* I’m trying!!”
Elijah made another mighty leap. He was fully confident of his ability to make it this time. The microgravity of this ship had been a blessing. Truly. He would’ve never made it in 1 g back on Earth. He didn’t know what other weapons these xenos were carrying, if any and/or had any sort of security team to back them up, but that was a problem for future Eli. It was always better to try than not in a situation like this. He managed to catch the now exposed ledge of the broken two mirrowindow. The jagged glass cut into his hand. It was surprisingly brittle, but it was extremely sharp. Blood trickled down Eli’s hands and wrists. He pulled himself up and over. Into the observation room. Face to face with his tormentors. He towered over them. They were quivering in terror. They were completely unarmed. He grabbed each of them gently by the throat and pushed them against an adjacent wall. It was time to get properly introduced.
“Hey, there. I’m Elijah Prince. And you are?”
