I had never visited the small town of Shirljohannes before, somewhere on the border of Germany and Switzerland, despite my fairly extensive travels for work around Europe. These continental small towns, they are so charming and picturesque, the literal scenes of The Sound of Music and shite like that. However they do end up being a bit “samey”- and I wasn’t expecting my overnight stay at Shirljohannes to be much different. It was an unplanned stop, I had found myself somewhat tired and drowsy after an exceptionally good meal, and decided to check in a local inn and get some much-needed sleep.
The pretty inn with blooming spring flowers at the window sills and such like certainly didn’t belie the horror of the next day. It was only the obvious confusion of the otherwise polite young clerk upon laying eyes on me that gave me the inkling that I had made a terrible choice to break my journey in Shirljohannes.
I couldn’t help noticing the large bright posters hanging in the lobby. Depicting small crowds of people clearly of non-European descent, such as Arabs, Middle-Eastern, Far East, and South / South Eastern Asians, they all bore the words “Lotteri Dag 2023”. Some kind of artsy “United Colours of Benetton” ad, I naively assumed.
The clerk, himself clearly of Middle-Eastern origin, greeted me with a startled look which he could not hide. He asked for my name and then exclaimed “Mr. Abbas? You are Mr. Abbas? And you’re staying here?”
I was irritated. “Yes indeed, I am staying for one night. This seemed a good a place as any for a stop, I was too tired to drive on”.
“Can I see your ID please? Do you have European ID sir?” To my ears, he sounded very suspicious.
I am of course used to a certain amount of low-level, poorly-concealed racism traveling in Europe, but I couldn’t help feeling a bit disappointed that this clerk, whose parents if not himself would probably have shared a similar heritage to mine, would act like this. I offered my passport. “No, but I have the correct visas” I responded sharply.
The clerk said nothing more, and checked me in. My mood soured, I went to my room, and soon fell asleep.
The next morning, two officers approached me at the breakfast table, where I was enjoying some amazing pastries, already checked out and my suitcase at my side.
“We entered you in the Lottery sir” they said in heavy accents. “We ran background checks on you- you are waiting for your Canadian citizenship and thus eligible to enter. Canada entered an official agreement with our government just last week. You can look up the articles.”
I stared at them, completely confused. “What are you talking about?
They returned my stare with bland official courtesy. “The Lottery sir. You will be entering the Passport Lottery held periodically at Shirljohannes, to celebrate the citizenship of our hardworking foreign worker population. You were found to meet the official requirements for entry. We entered your name. You will present yourself at the town square in precisely 43 minutes, when the name will be drawn.”
The other continued “And sir, please do not even think of leaving Shirljohannes or calling anyone outside the town. It will be much better for you to complete the Lottery. The odds are, you will be on your way within the hour.”
They left.
With a shaking hand, I pulled out my phone and began googling. Within seconds, I realised I do not have access to the world wide internet, but only some weird local Shirljohannes intranet. I hastily clicked on the bizarre English translation.
The Lottery was the (almost) last step on the long, convoluted journey for Foreigners in Shirljohannes applying to become Citizens. After years of filling and sending in forms, paying fees, waiting, waiting, interviews, more forms, changes to family composition, more waiting, Foreigners who were eligible for citizenship and the cherished passport of a European country would have to enter the Lottery.
The Foreign community would choose one person, who would be sent by ambulance to the local hospital, where they would be administered a painless, lethal dose by professionals. The final step, necessary to prove their loyalty and dedication to their new country.
I clicked through the convoluted intranet text, sun streaming on the beautiful breakfast setting. A cuckoo jumped out of an ornate old cuckoo clock and declared time. The young clerk from last night came up to me as I was reading.
“Mr. Abbas, it is time to go. The community- it’s better to go- they don’t like it if there are delays.”
I looked up at him, terror gripping me. “I don’t understand… how is this happening, how is this legal?”
The clerk shrugged. “It is legal. The municipal councils voted it in a few years ago- and the elders of the community support it. There were so many hate crimes, so much violence against foreigners. Propelled by fear, I got up, and followed him outside. The sun poured through the clear Alpine air into my eyes. In the glare, I could see knots of people, in twos and threes walking down the scenic mountain streets, all towards the city square. The clerk and I joined the flow.
Walking by us was a small group of women, dressed in ornate decorative ethnic clothing I would associate with India. The sunlight struck off the brilliant spangles in their clothes. I then noticed many people were dressed ethnically, while others wore plain western style clothing. Several women wore the hijab. There was little subdued chatter. I heard a woman in a sparkling robe say in a dialect I recalled from my childhood, “I prayed and prayed all night it would be me- I can’t bear my children- “ before the other women said “shhh Tasneem, do not talk of it. Do not go welcoming sorrow.”
As we drew closer to the town square, the crowds grew larger, and quieter. There was a moment of pure silence. Then everything began happening very fast.
A middle-aged man who looked to be some authority figure went up on a platform before a small splashy fountain which held the statue of naked white Venus and some other Greek deity. I just noticed the device set up on the platform.
The man operated the device. My heart was beating so fast as it spit out a paper that I thought it would burst out of my chest. The man held up the paper and he read out a name. “Tasneem-”
I didn’t catch the last part of the name in the rippling sigh which broke through the crowd. I saw the women fall away from the one whom I had earlier heard talking about praying. In the same movement, paramedics moved up to her, and started guiding her towards a waiting ambulance, at the edge of the town square.
The silence continued, although small murmurs could be heard. Tasneem did not struggle - her demeanour seemed one of submission .
The knots of people broke away from the crowd. A certain festive mood was undeniable. My young companion was no longer at my side, and I caught sight of him running over to young folk closer to his age, releasing a whoop of joy and relief.
I looked around. The two officers approached me and smiled grimly. “Very well Mr. Abbas, the Lottery is over. Congratulations on your upcoming citizenship. You may depart now without any further delays.”
I nodded. It was clear they expected me to leave right then. I could not disobey. I quickly walked to my car, and got in.
Within twenty minutes, I was well on my way to my destination, Shirljohannes behind me. May I never set foot in that terrible town again.

I came across a big similarity when reading up about several ancient unconnected cultures and their mythologies. A general story that seems to be an allegory for an old divination technique known as the geomantic act. "So if all these distant civilizations shared the same ancient culture or started out from the same sort of mother culture then surely there would be some evidence left of it right? I thought so too so I spent a considerable amount of time looking for connections that would be too specific to ignore or pass off as coincidence. Finally after years of searching I found them.
The main one, and what this section is about is a shared cultural art between ancient China, South America and Ancient Egypt. This art is known as geomancy and in China it is known as Feng Shui, each one of these places I just mentioned contain huge pyramids within their borders and both Egypt and the south American cultures have a very similar story of creation that seems to be an allegory for what they call the "geomantic act". A divination technique used to build temples and buildings in the exact right spot (according to the practitioners of it).

Another way to view it (like the above book says) is a hero slaying a dragon or serpent with the aid of four warriors/weapons/deities then building a holy structure on the place the monster was killed. This is how they represent the act in allegorical form in the European version of it.

The objective story the Aztec/Olmec/Mayan/Inca (I am unsure who originated them, I am not a historian) and Egyptian creation myth (according to the Edfu Texts) begin with a world of darkness with no land, only sky and water and a god who lives there, then the god one way or another creates the first world/land which is an island, and the first people, eventually fighting ensues, then because of the fighting the earth is engulfed by water or the island disappears (same thing when you are the only land). Then from this water the new world rises and is rebuilt in the old worlds image from the "bones" of the old world.
Now that story could be shrugged off as mere coincidence I suppose, However...Later in these stories of creation another identical event happens. In the Egyptian and Aztec myths a hero or creator god and group of 4 gods, protectors or warriors represented by four animals and four directions. Do battle with a serpent type monster that always represents chaos. They win this fight and slay the monster and then on the spot it was slain build a sacred temple.
What I just described to you seems to be another allegory used in other cultures for what they call the geomantic act, a local adaptation of it.
The following are pages from the Edfu translation book I linked:
-Page 35 in the book is the summery of the fight. A fight between a serpent and a hawk and his four protectors who represent the four directions. Just as the book "Secret Games of the Gods" described the geomantic act, using the four directions the "hero" would slay the "dragon" and build on the spot it was slayed.
-Page 196 details it. It should also be noted that Tanen became Ptah-Tatenen who was the god of creation and temple building. The page below also clarifies that the sacred place would be built where the snake enemy was slayed.
-Page 324 is the overall summery of the book and outlines the new world made from the bones of a dead god.

-Page 297 states the earth god which is found to actually represent earth said to have a “Ka” (spirit) and the earths “Ka” being present was the perquisite for building these temples. So the earths energy had to be present at these sites for building and then once the temple was made it had to be activated by joining with the earths Ka.
Also of note these 4 animals from the Edfu texts also turn up in the book “The Secret Teachings of All Ages” written in 1923 a few decades before the Edfu texts were even translated.

This fits the geomantic act because it also is using natural energy to pick a location for a sacred building (according to the practitioners of it).

This story of creations shares many similarities with the story laid out in the Edfu temple and seems to also be an allegory for the geomantic act.

From this enormous creature the universe was created (in some traditions this happened between the last two suns). All the 13 heavens stretch into her head. The earth was created in the middle, and her tail reaches down to the underworld (Mictlán) (nine underworlds, to be exact).
You could say that in the Aztec creation story the world is on the back of this sea monster, floating in the water of space (reminiscent of the Iroquois belief that the world rests on the back of a turtle).”

So according to the above story of creation the Aztecs thought that their land was on the back of a serpent type dragon monster that was killed by four gods by stretching it in the four directions. It actually had many similarities with the geomantic act and its purpose laid out in Secret Games of the Gods. That book also said the purpose of the act was to control the "serpent" in the earth and stop its chaos from destroying the building.
Now its pretty hard to dismiss those stories as mere coincidence, those stories are seemingly localized versions of what is known as the “serpent slaying myth” in indo-european culture. A story that is told and was told in cultures the world over in various localized versions in a time when they had no communication or even knew each other existed. As we saw in the Edfu temple book even the ancient Egyptians had this myth and practice of geomancy.

Not only that but the directions in Aztec mythology are represented by the same color pallet as the Chinese four guardians Black, white, blue and red. Only north and west line up with being the same color and same direction but all the colors are the same.

3 out of 4 creatures match the Aztec and Egyptian mythology and they are all referred to as guardians or gods. The one odd guardian/direction out is the tortoise replacing the bull but interestingly enough the tortoise is also called the black warrior and Xipe Toltec (formless/many formed god) the Aztec god of the north is also the god of warfare. They are also the only animal/god/directions with unsure names or forms which in itself is a link in common all three versions have. Perhaps it was called a different name in the past.
The “plummed serpent” sounds like a spot on interpretation of a Chinese dragon, depicted as flying snakes often with feathers.

There is undoubtedly a connection here. The beginning of the earth from the various cultures being the same objective story could easily be dismissed as coincidence. The same 4 animals representing in some cases the same directions and originating from the same scenario which is then used to pick the spot to build a holy place or building however cannot be dismissed so easily and I think is incredible evidence that a shared or "mother" culture existed between them. That all three cultures would also contain within their territory pyramids is also to hard to dismiss as a coincidence with all of this evidence laid out.

I'm always told that the US has next to no divisions and is very weak during 1937 yet my units couldn't set a foothold. I chalked it up to it being bad terrain and supply. So on my fourth try I aimed for the US mainland itself.
I did this by justifying on Panama (Only takes 10 days) after storming Honolulu and asking El Salvador for docking rights (Which they always grant.)
Getting naval supremacy to get to Panama is always a tricky gamble and the incessant convoy raiding by the US is very annoying but I managed that by blocking sea access all around Japan whenever I'm not using my convoys to move troops around. Since my entire fleet is busy keeping naval supremacy.
Landing in the US was easy and I'm even able to take most of Texas with my calvary and hold it. And oddly enough I don't really have any supply issues at all dispite my convoys being locked to the ports
The first issue tho is that getting here took me from mid 1937 to around February-ish of 1938 so I'm quickly running out of time already and I just got here.
I land a second naval invasion near Florida and reinforce it with a mix 9/1 Infantry, motorized and fodder divisions. I put them on aggressive and battle planned them to push north HARD
I needed to cap the US fast at this point because I need to cap Mexico right after without England getting involved.
Not to mention China kept annoying me with their stupid sabotage events.
I got pretty far north. And even executed several encirclements.
But fuck issues started to come up. I made it to Washington and tried desperately to take that tile and get the momentum to also take Philadelphia and New York. But despite dedicating 4 ~ 9/1's and 2 motorized divisions to the attack with the addition of a force attack. I was still stopped at Washington without any chance of surpassing it.
And because of desperate my rush to Washington my eastern coast front line was a complete disaster. And my western one was even worse.
More than have of my calvary divisions were obliterated. Wiped out. I still had a handful of calvary divisions along with some fodder units left but not nearly enough to cover the western front line.
At this point it was 1939 and Germany had just declared on Poland. So this attempt was another failure.
On my fifth try I wanted to avoid the disaster that happened so I decided a radical overhaul to my army was needed. Even if it took me a bit longer to invade the US.
By march in 1938 this is what I had
24 ~ 10/2 Infantry divisions with support artillery and a engineer company
24 ~ 10/0 calvary divisions with support artillery and a engineer company
24 ~ 6/0 Fodder Infantry divisions with a engineer company.
I swear to God what happened next was some bullshit that I should've seen coming.
Despite how fast I made it to Honolulu. By the time I took Panama and invaded the US mainland it was already 1939.
Not to mention the constant convoy raiding by the US and China's incessant poking and prodding at me to get me to go to war with them with these stupid pop up events was Really Fucking Annoying.
Due to my strengthen divisions I had some success in the US. But it was limited because the US also had time to beef up. It was so limited in fact that I call off the entire attempt as a failure because there was no way I was gonna cap the US And Mexico before WW2 started. Not at the pace it was going.
Right now I'm on my sixth attempt and I'm going non historical. At this point just I'm hoping that a opportunity presents itself to me. That's the entirety of my plan rn. Lmfao

I have been thinkin about this today and it does make sense to me even tho i havnt always theory crafted more dark chaotic storylines in my head.
So the elder dragons were needed for tyria in the past and Im assuming even tho we have tagged alone making the world safe again we will eventually either

1. see more of the land than even in the gw1 game.
2. see new lands through the mists or whatever other places they want.

We have to many allies for me to count or think about at this point in the game and if non are killed off in the future, we have seen that we slowly sort of separate into our own issues over time at this point and each gets their own sort of story and point of view. Our dragon buddy has been tagging along with us for a while but its possible with new areas to explore the commander would want or need someone capable of defending the land while they are gone, along with the you know built in filtration unit she provides.
Does this open the door for us to shift the focus back on our individual characters and with the party members we have starting to divide up over the last expansions open up individual future expansion paths in which we can explore with 1 or 2 of our friends instead of big parties. [ i would like to see a death ending for one however].

After waiting 14 months for the chorfs to be added (and 1 extra month for the RoC to work again) I was finally able to play Boris Ursus' campaign the way it was designed to play and let me tell you its awesome.
You are stranded in an old Kislev colony, surrounded by orks and skaven. Purging them is doable, but once they are gone you begin to realise that you are surrounded on both sides by alliances of evil.
In the north you got Valkia, her slaving servants, nurgle, and on one occasion even Azazel before I burned down his random colony and send him packing back east. And in the south you got the chorfs who focus all their energy into purging you from their homeland.
Meanwhile the only friends you have are the dworfs, who get devoured by the chorfs. The silver pinnacle, who get devoured by chorfs and will definitly switch sides when Neferata comes. And finally the children at home who are so busy bickering that they fail to notice that the motherland is steadily getting depopulated.
Luckily you have the great red Tsar Boris who is an absolute powerhouse with his bear doomstack, but sadly he away trying to save Ursun in a different dimension. So its up to the boyars to hold the line, extinguishing fires, and fight a guerilla war in the Word Edge mountains against the chorfs.
What a blast, being constantly on your toes and on the edge of financial ruin, just trying to focus on completing the objective no matter the cost. Definitely worth the wait.
My only three points for improvement would be that first of all Kislev needs some kind of Dwarf Miner or High Elf Ranger unit because without Dead Baron's Kvassnicki unit the early game would have been torture. That second of all the Kislevite Dervishes are absolute trash and a waste of space on the rooster. And that third of all I wish that you could keep spending supporters after the race is settled to gain the temporary bonuses, maybe flavoured as you sending supplies or troops back home to aid the defence effort.
