Which are your favourite guns, and why? Can be for just Shepard, or for Squadmates also. NB: It's "favourite," not "best." This is obviously subjective, and it's just for discussion.
SNIPER RIFLES I'll state upfront that I love using a long gun at range. You start with the Mantis. It's powerful, but "rate of fire" is laughable, so I ditch it asap. The Viper is a good interim substitute, when available, and it's light. But it's not something I bother upgrading. The Black Widow is, in most respects, rated as the most "powerful" SR in the game. I will carry it at times, and certainly buy and upgrade it for squadmates (who aren't limited by weight.) The N7 Valiant is my favourite SR, although it's the most expensive gun in the game. It's reasonably powerful, and has a superior rate of fire. It's not too heavy, meaning I can carry it AND a decent AR, without a huge weight penalty. (Especially once I have extra weight capacity and can afford upgrades.
ASSAULT RIFLES AR is still my main weapon. Geth Pulse Rifle, once it becomes available, I find is a good compromise AR for Shepard, when buffed with a Sight and Barrel. Makes up for lack of damage with superior rate of fire. Particle Rifle is available once Eden Prime is done. Its too heavy for me to use, but I find it a good free gun to give to squadmates, due to the high damage it can inflict. N7 Typhoon has to be purchased, and at a premium price, but is potentially the most powerful gun in the game. In a sustained burst it will chew through anything. I will at times carry this myself, either with a light or no SR, and it is the ultimate squadmate weapon. For them you can add the heavy barrel, giving exceptional penetrating power (which is needed since they love shooting at enemies behind cover.) This is usually the first gun I Buy. M7 Lancer is a great compromise gun for Shepard. (Unfortunately it is only available after the Shore-Leave mission) The balance of relatively light weight vs damage makes a good option to carry with a heavier SR. It doesn't use thermal clips, which can be a bonus in some scenarios, but also means it should only be used in bursts, and is a problems against hoards.
SMG I almost always have Shepard make do with some combo of the above weapons, so don't usually carry an SMG, so mostly this is for Liara and EDI. The Blood Pack Punisher, with it's additional AP rounds, is a good cheap weapon (only $10k) available very early in the game. Depending on how I go for Credits, and what missions remain, I might buy them the N7 Hurricane late in the game. (This will usually depend on whether I buy armour, or stick with the poncy phantom getup, and how bored I get farming credits in the Arena.)
SHOTGUN The way I seem to play (and this is just my personal outcome) I find Shotguns are not as effective as I think they should be. Even against something like a husk, I find it easier to just pulverise them with a power. As such, shotguns are just for Tali, Wrex when he plays, and as 2nd weapons for Vega and Grunt. Graal Spike-Thrower I find is a decent cheap/free mid-game shotgun for squadmates. Geth Plasma Shotgun is a well-balanced compromise if Shepard needs a shotgun, especially suing the charge-up feature. Not much point for squadmates though. Generally, once I have the credits, I find myself choosing between the N7 Crusader or Piranha. At this point, I'm mostly thinking of a weapon for Tali, so the range and impact of the Crusader wins out.
PISTOL I have occasionally carried a Pistol as a backup weapon, and in that case generally pick the Phalanx for it's light weight. Otherwise I'm generally picking an interim/alternative weapon for someone like Tali. I have often given them the Scorpion, just for something different, but in practice it's hard to judge how effective those exploding globs are. The ARC Pistol is a good (free) mid-game compromise gun for squadmates. Beyond that, TBH, I don't really bother. Love to see what other players like using

My name is Jhuan and I live in Brazil. I am a longtime member of this sub, but haven't being asking for games here for a looong time. Today is the release day of Resident Evil 4 Remake, and sadly I can't buy it, for two motives I will list below. Also, I will write a little about how Resident Evil is so important to me ;)
• Why I want RE4 Remake, and why I love Resident Evil so much?
Everything started in 2006, when I was introduced to gaming by my father. I liked watching him playing his PS1 and PS2 games. The first game I watched him play was Resident Evil 2 on PS1, and I consider that one my first game ever. Being a kid, I could finish all games by myself, but my father helped me a lot. Together, we played RE1 and RE2 on PS1, and in 2007 we got a Xbox 360 with RE4 and RE5.
Resident Evil was part of my childhood, and it is till today my favorite game series ever. I played all games from RE0 to RE8 Village (original and remade original trilogy), plus Revelations 1 and 2, Operation Raccoon City, Code Veronica, Dead Aim and Outbreak File #1 and File #2, even Resistance and ReVerse lol. Also, I watched all CGI movies, from Degeneration to Infinite Darkness (watched Milla's movies when I was younger, but didn't like it so much). Resident Evil is the only big franchise (in terms of numerous titles) that I have played almost all games, and I just love all of them.
I have recently played for the first time RE Code Veronica, because of all the hype for a possible Remake. And I just loved it. The characters, gameplay, story and specially the music. Code Veronica has the best OST ever. I really liked enemies and bosses designs too. I recommend it for everyone who hasn't played it yet, and like old RE games and it's used to tank controls.
I have got all achievements for RE2 Remake, RE3 Remake and RE4 on Steam, also, for RE5, Revelations 1 and 2 on Xbox 360, and I am on my way to get all of them for Steam rn (I'm working in RE5 and 6 now).
Well, I just love those games, I love the lore of each one of them. Gaming means Resident Evil for me, since it was my first game series, and my most played series ever.
Resident Evil was very important to me because I met my best friend in RE6. After years of playing RE4, 5 and 6 on Xbox 360, when I got those games on Steam, I found a Steam Group server with a lot of people trying to find players for matchmaking. That's when I first met my friend. Since then, we played tons of hours of RE5, RE6, Revelations 1 and 2 Raid mode and even Resistance and ReVerse. We also played other games, like CSGO, Borderlands 2 and Minecraft. But we always come back to Resident Evil. We love to discuss about RE lore, and when a new trailer drops, we talk about it for hours lol.
Shortening, I play Resident Evil since I was a kid, being introduced to it by my father. I have played almost all games and watched all movies (and memorized all the lines lol). I have met my best friend because of Resident Evil and I play a lot of RE5 and 6 till today with him.
• Why I can't buy it?
Well, RE4 Remake was cheaper than what it is now, in my country. When it was on pre-order, it was BRL200, now it is BRL250. I am on the college now, having to buying a lot of books and instruments for my course, and I am really short on money. I have being able to buy and play almost all Resident Evil games at release, untill RE2 Remake, when I got short on money, and then started to have to wait months to get into the game. The worse thing are spoiler, yeah, I know I played the original game, but I want to re-experience it all over again, as it was a new game. If I could get RE4 gifted to me, it would be an amazing help for my studies, since I could use all money I have right to buy the needed books, and wouldn't have to wait like one year to buy the game.
Shortening, I can't buy it for two motives: 1 - Don't have money to buy my books AND the game rn / 2- The price change made it even harder for me to buy it.

I pulled myself back through the open grate in the armoury's floor and tossed my hardlight adjuster onto the work table, swearing as I did. The water I'd grabbed earlier was still sitting on the floor beside the central leg of the table, untouched.
Victoria had been sitting in the cockpit, but she got up as she heard me climb back out of the engine housing. There was only space for one of us down there, and even though she'd explained she knew a lot about ships, she wasn't exactly going to be able to repair a human one. "Still bad?"
"It's fucked. We're-" I sighed instead of swearing again.
"Do we?"
"I'll give it one more shot before we need to make new plans."
"So we can't get to Ovigaia then?"
"Don't write it off yet, but-" I trailed off instead of saying 'yeah.' The laser fire we'd taken had pierced the hull, and while the prognosis could have been worse, there wasn't far for it to go. The shot had damaged the right-side power cells of the ship. Even if I managed to fix them so they stopped losing power on every circuit run, we'd already bled enough storage that we had essentially half as much auxiliary power as I'd planned for the trip to Ovigaia.
Unless I could restore peak efficiency and was wrong about how much power we'd lost in the past hours, we would need to land somewhere else. Not to mention, we'd pierced the veil at the wrong angle after getting hit, meaning the journey already would have been overlong with a fully functional ship.
"Do you want me to take a look at some of the options we might have?"
"Hard to tell what's in range until I have a read on the power, but sure. Thanks," Victoria nodded as she stepped back to the cockpit, sliding into the co-pilot's seat and bringing up the console.
At least she was making herself useful, better than she'd been on Mythellion III when I'd first met her. Maybe she was warming up to me or maybe just warming up to the idea of someone who was keeping her alive.
Mom had always said that getting shot at was great for developing character.
I took a sip of the water and watched as she started working on the console, slow and methodical but making progress. She hadn't asked for help, but I imagined everything that seemed intuitive for humans was like a foreign language of UI for her. Most tech used agreed on universal standards if they wanted to reach the mass market; human military surplus was optimized for our neural networking.
She swore, and I almost spoke up, but every minute I spent jabbing her ego instead of working on the batteries could be light years off our expected distance.
I dropped back into the floor and was met with the telltale thrum of the perpetual engine funnelling power to the rest of the ship. It took a moment for my eyes to adjust to the hyper-blue light.
Across from me, at the end of the first maintenance way, I could see the shield of the ship making a translucent lattice between myself and the infinite void of the black. Interlocking hexagons shimmered in a pulsing rhythm over the wound in the Gunboat Diplomat's hull. Just to the right of the damage, the twisted, melted metal of the power storage battery hung loose and open, pouring purple light like a gash in reality.
My personal shield, the one that I'd been storing on the ship, sparked to life as I approached the exposed battery, absorbing heat and radiation spillage from the damaged part and using it as power. Once I was close enough to see the inside of the battery, I pulled out my PA, not expecting anything new.
It only took a breath to establish that, despite my wiring a spare shielding cell into the network of the battery, we were still losing power each cycle through the laser wound. Nanite temp-repair gel had been enough to slow the pour of energy, but it was a patch, and perpetual energy needed a perfect system to remain perpetual.
There was a chance that I could rewire the shields connection and it would be good enough. I reached down to grab the hardlight adjuster on my hip and ended up patting nothing. Shit. "Victoria. Can you throw down the tool? I need it." After waiting long enough, I called again, "Victoria?"
There were two taps behind me as Victoria gently lowered herself through the floor into the maintenance hallway, stooping to avoid knocking her head on any of the support struts. She walked over with awkwardly bent knees and pressed the adjuster into my hand.
"You shouldn't be down here without a-" Victoria showed me her other hand and revealed my old mk23 shield generator. "-Thanks."
"Any better?"
"Yes and no."
"By-"
"We're losing less power, but we're still losing. I just wanna try decoupling the shield cell I hot-wired in there and seeing if I can't-" I cut myself off to focus as I reached into the hole in the battery's casing and started dematerializing the hardlight wiring I'd built before. "If I can't get it running better."
"No chance of perfect then?"
"Don't think so."
Breaking down hardlight was usually quick work, but when working around a damaged battery storing enough power to restart a miniature sun, everything took too much time. Unlike the previous rounds of repairs, Victoria stayed with me this time and kept trying to find new angles to see what I was working on.
After a while, she gave up and sat down on the floor. ; there wasn't enough room in the hallway to see past me and into the casing.
"You can go back up and-"
"Can I ask you a question?"
"Sure."
"Diadona?"
"Yes."
"Is that a human last name too?"
"No." I stopped working momentarily, pulling the adjuster out and shaking the last motes of light free of it. How close were Fotuan and human languages that her translator could catch the differences in species' last names?
"But you're-"
"Yes, I'm human," I confirmed, "I was adopted by a mixed family."
"Pardon?"
"My biological parents were human. Mom was an Ovishir, and Dad was a human."
"But you just said that-"
"Mom and Dad raised me after adoption; my bio-parents provided the parts," I clarified.
"Sorry, I'm just confused by- You keep saying 'adoption,' and I don't think it translates."
"Really?"
"I don't know what it means."
"It means that the people who raised me didn't give birth to me."
"That's so strange. And one of them was an Ovishir?"
"My Mom."
"And by Mom, you mean-"
"She raised me but didn't give birth to me. Yes."
"That's so weird," Victoria added just as I had to get quiet again to focus on what my hands were doing. My PA overlaid a wiring setup on the AR glass as the optimal path for energy, but it was the same one I'd just been using. I added a small touch of hard light off the highlighted circuit, hoping the system would suggest something else, but it just told me to erase my work.
Shit.
I knew my way around electronics well enough to follow instructions, but I wasn't about to take apart and rewire the entire battery when it was powering my ship through the black. That was just asking to become a statistic.
I set myself on redrawing the wired connections that I'd just spent the last few minutes erasing. Victoria spoke up again.
"You were raised by an Ovishir, then?"
"Mostly, my D- male parent," I switched the wording to try and help the idea translate for her, "died when I was pretty young so-"
"And that male parent was-"
"Human."
"I didn't know that was a thing that happened."
"Hm?"
"Two different species raising a kid," she explained, "just seems… Wrong isn't the right word, but it's strange."
"How long have you been away from Fotul?"
"Pardon?"
"How long have you been outside of Meritocracy space? Mixed couples aren't common, but they aren't that rare."
"I-"
"I'm just surprised you haven't seen one. How long have you been away?"
I'd almost finished rewiring the system, but I pulled my hand out to let my shield cool down. It could use the energy from the battery but feeding it too much for too long was asking for it to overload, and, unlike some other species, I couldn't get exposed to that much radiation for very long at all.
"I'm going to go check on our flight path options," Victoria said as she stood up, "let me know how the repairs go once you're done." She walked away before she was fully finished speaking.
I sighed once she was out of earshot and got back to work.
Even though adding the shield cell to defend the tears in the circuit had given the best results of anything I'd tried, we were still light years away from perfect energy cycling, even with optimal hardlight wiring. There was a chance that I could have gotten us somewhere closer if I had physical wires to use, but I didn't have any heavy-duty spares on the ship.
If this had taught me anything, it had shown me that I had too many spare parts for guns and not enough for the ship itself.
At least I'd have time to look at the Basking once we'd chosen a new destination.
I held the PA up to the newly rewired system and let it calculate how much energy we were losing on each cycle, then sent that data to the nav console itself before packing and heading back up myself.
As I closed the access panel to the lower deck and re-affixed the radiation shielding, Victoria spoke up from the cockpit.
"Are you kidding me?"
"What's wrong?" I asked without turning my attention over to her yet.
"We're losing that much power? I thought that-"
"Mhm."
"Well-" Victoria growled in frustration, and I heard her shoot up from her seat, "none of the routes I was planning are going to work then."
"Not enough?"
"We wouldn't even make it halfway to Ovigaia according to your human piece of-" she trailed off. We'd already beaten around the bush once regarding her ship vs mine. The Gunboat Diplomacy had won because it wasn't currently scrap metal polluting Mythellion's orbit.
"What are our options then?" I asked as I finally stood up in our conversation. Victoria turned back to the cockpit and got into the co-pilot's seat.
"Two. Maybe three."
"I think we need a main population center for repairs."
"One then, maybe two."
"What planet's number one?"
"Not a planet," Victoria brought it up on the screens as I went to meet her, blocking out the infinite void that the front cameras had been showing for the past hours. The reading on the screen was an ancient mining station that had been retrofitted into a colony ship. "Station-"
"What's the other option?"
"Uh-" Victoria shot a questioning look but no questions with it, "Baris-Na, an Anteraxi forward colony."
"Baris-Na it is."
Victoria didn't hit anything that would mark the planet as the ship's target. Instead, she pointed to the bottom of the screen and the energy it would take to get there. "I said maybe for a reason."
If we cut everything but the engines, we'd need to drop out of superluminal speeds within a few hours and drift for three days.
"We should aim for Station 26; the other one's not really an option."
I bit my lip for a moment before speaking up. "You're right." There wasn't a point in explaining why I'd cut her off before. Avoiding the obvious choice was just putting us in unnecessary danger.
Still, I'd told myself I'd never be back.

i basically only asked it 2 things , it wanted a possession type and that it was a stereotypical OI i let the ai do the rest
ill describe below what happened but please note i won't be typing it word for word as the ai liked to skip ahead way to fast and i had to repeat scenes a couple of times to not make this post 3 lines long

The first day

Our main character (she doesn't have a name right now so I'll call her FL) wakes up in a mysterious place with a man next to her with " with piercing blue eyes " he introduces himself as Prince Leon.

After taking in her surroundings "FL" asks Leon "where am i and who are you"

Prince Leon smiles charmingly and explains that you have been transported to the kingdom of Arathia, a magical land filled with wonders and mysteries. He goes on to say that he is the prince and ruler of Arathia, and that he has been waiting for someone like you to arrive.
As he speaks, she notice that he seems almost too perfect, with his chiseled features and confident demeanor. But despite her initial suspicions, she can't help but feel drawn to him.

She asks Leon why she looks different to how she looked before she was transported

Prince Leon looks at her with a mixture of curiosity and concern. "What do you mean?" he asks. "You look just as beautiful as always."

The Prince took her through the castle's grand entrance hall, where the walls were adorned with intricate tapestries and suits of armor stood guard on either side of the room. From there, he led her through the castle's many halls and corridors, each one more ornate than the last, with elaborate carvings and stunning artwork lining the walls. She passed through the castle's great hall, where a long dining table sat surrounded by high-backed chairs, and the castle's many guest rooms, each one more luxurious than the last.
The Prince showed her the castle's expansive library, where thousands of books lined the shelves from floor to ceiling. He told her that the library contained works from all over the world, and that the castle's scholars spent their days studying and translating the ancient tomes.
Next, he took her outside to the castle's sprawling gardens, where she was greeted by the sight of lush, colorful flowers and towering trees. The air was filled with the sweet scent of blossoms, and the sound of a nearby fountain provided a soothing background melody. The Prince told her that the gardens were created to honor the memory of his mother, who loved nothing more than spending time among the flowers.
Finally, the Prince took her to the castle's highest tower, where she could see the entire kingdom sprawled out before her. From this vantage point, she could see the rolling hills and vast forests that made up the countryside, as well as the bustling city that lay at the heart of the kingdom. It was a breathtaking view, and the Prince told her that it was one of his favorite places in the castle.

during the tour FL starts to get suspicious as to why the prince was being so friendly and also why he was with her when she woke up, asking him about this he replies
" Ah, I see. Well, when I found you outside the castle, you were unconscious, and I had no idea where you came from. However, a priest examined you and discovered that a different soul was inhabiting the body of the noblewoman you resembled. As for why I was so kind to you, I must admit that I felt a strange connection to you from the moment I saw you. It was as though fate had brought us together for a reason. "

Prince Leon chuckles softly at your comment and says, "I'm glad you think so FL. And no, you won't have to sleep on a bench. I have a guest room in the castle that you're welcome to use for as long as you stay here in Arathia."
He then turns towards the castle and gestures for FL to follow him. "Please, allow me to show you to your room. I hope it meets your expectations." He then starts to walk towards the castle's entrance, looking back at her with a kind smile to make sure she's following him.

in the castle they go their separate ways before dinner and FL starts getting ready for dinner with Leon . after she finishes gettting ready she hears a knock on the door, it's a servant that informs her that dinner is ready and Leon is waiting
heading to the dining room she finds prince leon already seated where he greets her with a warm smile "Good evening, FL," he says. "You look lovely."

as she sits down to eat FL starts to ask Leons questions about this world mainly about technologies they have and their culture, she learns that the world is a pretty stereotypical OI setting, the haven't quite reached industrial revolution but they have guns (although they are seen as dishonourable ) mostly flintlock types placing their culture similarly to the 1700's in our world, however they also have some technology from later 19th century such as screwcaps.

after the questioning were over they shared a pleasant chat and finished the rest of their meal and heading back to their rooms, in her room FL reflects on the days her thoughts drifting towards prince leon. she slowly drifts of to sleep closing the curtains on her first day in Arathia

My uncle John* (M36) is severely disable due to several physical disabilities. He cannot talk, walk and is now legally blind. He technically has capacity however he is like a teenager and incredibly impressionable. I suspect he is autistic after being diagnosed with ADHD and waiting for an ASD assessment. My sister and mum (F52) are also awaiting assessments.
John is unable to access his money at the care home due to many excuses so my mum pays for everything which she cannot afford. John is desperate for a new van yet he cannot even get money for a phone contract.
Mum and John agreed to apply for power of attorney (POA) however this has been blocked by the care home manager, who we recently found from other resident families has been done for financial fraud in the past and has now left. They called safeguarding on my mum and insinuated she was financially abusing John. The new manager has taken the same stance.
He has thousands of pounds from his last care home due to over payments and we are worried this has been taken or that he will lose this if he doesn’t spend it soon on the van he wants (if you have too much funds benefits will take it).
We fear that POA being blocked due to covering financial fraud because money has gone missing from his account and they are shady and never give him money. This care home is known for being in debt and are now closing. We want to move him close to us but fear they will also block this.
Supporting evidence: my mum found a black check that she worked out was cashed for £500 from a bank statement lying around in his room.
Despite Jacob being incredibly vulnerable due to his disabilities, he was called into multiple meetings with the care home manager, social worker and safeguarding team.
They do not know his signs, mum ask if the manager know what he was signing and she couldn’t tell mum. They are blocking family from these meetings due to safeguarding so we cannot assist him in communications. He needs and independent advocate during these meetings at least.
They tell us that he has said no to the POA yet when he is with us he said that he does want it and they’re lying. Mum is in a thousand pound of debt in legal fees as John was supposed to pay her back when POA goes through. Now she is stuck unable to pay her rent and considering moving into a van.
John and my mum were physically abused as children from Johns dad, we always knew he was a people pleaser because of this. Now I’ve been diagnosed I’m wondering if he is autistic and this is why he’s so easily manipulated by the care home and doesn’t understand that if mum isn’t POA then he will continue to have no access!
In the assessment they ask ‘do you want your sister to have control of your money’ he takes the word control literally and thinks hell no! Without realising that it means is going to help him access it, I don’t think he can read between the lines and understand the consequences. They are either not explaining it properly or portraying her as taking his money for herself and cannot see their intentions.
We cannot afford any more legal fees, can we go to the police to get them to investigate or will they direct us to solicitors?
Should we fight his capacity if he is autistic because it doesn’t seem that he understands. It’s so hard to assess when he cannot talk and has been institutionalised!
We love him dearly and just want to make his life better, he has all this money yet he’s sat in old clothes with nothing to do starting into space all day! He loves gardening and woodwork and needs a new van so we can take him out with his girlfriend! We worry he will be rehoused 4 hours away like last time! We have found a perfect place but fear they will block it!

Over the course of about 7 months my boyfriend has insulted or made me feel hurt in some way. I’m 25F and he’s 24M.

And last night. Probably pissed me off the most. I’ve got a nail chewing addiction and he thinks it’s easy to just stop but like I can’t. And I’ve got some crooked teeth and APPARENTLY I have a tooth that is longer than my other (like top two teeth in middle). But he made a point to say “what are you sharpening one of your teeth because one is longer than the other”. And he was born with perfect teeth. Like sorry I wasn’t??? And that was so offensive and hurtful to even say!
Idk obviously I’m still upset over it and I don’t know what to do. My heart doesn’t want to break up with him because I love him and besides when he’s being stupid our relationship is pretty good. Things could be improved but I understand things take work. But at the same time, if this was one of my friends I’d tell them to break up with their partner.
Additionally I am childfree and at one point he said he wanted kids and he says he changed his mind but idk because the way he reacts to infants and children. I woke at around 0400, ready and raring to start my day. I'd gone to sleep at zero balls thirty, which meant that I got to sleep in. Nice. One of the best parts of being a gen-alt is not needing much sleep. I'd heard that the researchers who created the project actually estimated that we would need MORE sleep, and were shocked when the opposite was the case.
Nowadays there are sleep studies that are trying to prove that sleep is only necessary for children, and the only reason that adults sleep is that it's addictive. Very addictive, complete with withdrawal symptoms. I don't know where I stand on this hypothesis, but the Marine corps has taught me that you can end up facing those "withdrawal symptoms" at any moment. So it's best to catch your forty winks whenever you can.
The current record for unassisted wakefulness is 30 days, after researchers realized that the reason that chronic insomniacs were dying was due to their underlying diseases. There still hasn't been a case of someone being awake to death. The lady who went 30 days ended up getting bored and taking a nap. That nap lasted for 48 hours, though. Don't know what that means for the hypothesis.
Honestly, the technical stuff is a bit above my pay grade. Whenever I try to talk about stuff like this to people who actually know about it I get embarrassed by my lack of knowledge. I should stick to 'pull trigger, make dead'. On the other hand, I'm going to have to retire eventually. I've got one more rank and everything after that is deskwork and terribly hard to get. Plus once you get gunny you get a pretty sweet severance package that includes life-time pay.
That plus my gen-alt lifetime pay will make it to where I won't have to worry about income while I plan my next move. The worrying part is which direction to plan in. I'm in the difficult situation of being smart enough to do just about damned near anything I put my mind to. Trying to find something that I'll love doing for an extended period of time is hard.
I could go to college and get a degree and enter some sort of field of science or medicine. I'm interested in those but I don't know if my interest will help me jump through all of the hoops to do so. Or I can enter the trades, take advantage of my genetic alterations to do hard jobs for better pay than most can get. I could even do that for a couple of years until I get enough to buy a ship and license and start doing freight. There's really good money in that, but I wouldn't get to see my family that often unless I brought them with me.
I can even go into finances. When I was in my twenties I had worked at a bank as a teller and they almost immediately promoted me to banker. I liked helping people understand their money, but hated trying to sell them on stuff that they didn't really need. That was the last job I had before I up and joined the Corps, and where I met my wife.
After I finished my morning routine I did my knocking, making sure the rest of my squad was awake. Our official schedule is an 0500 wake-up, formation at 0600, PT at 07, and then gear check at 08. We did our gear check last night, so we could do the briefing at 08 instead.
The only ones I had to actually wake up was PFC Brint and Corpsman Yunk. Everyone else was already awake, either because they were gen-alt like me or because they'd been in so long their internal clocks woke them up naturally.
We formed up, did our head count, and started PT at 0630. Fifteen early to being fifteen early. Some complaints from the PFCs but they were disregarded. We started with stretches, then a brisk jog through the corridors. Then we did pushups, side straddle hops, crunches, and finally we came to weights. Weights are a favorite among most marines, but can be particularly dangerous with gen-alts involved.
Non-alts are not allowed to spot gen-alts under any circumstances. This was made part of the Uniform Code of Military Justice very quickly after the genetics program hit the fleet. Every marine is prideful, and without the out of it being against regs they'll try to lift 800 lbs off of a gen-alts chest and blow out their back. Meanwhile the gen-alt will be stuck with nearly a ton on their ribcage. That's not healthy to anybody, and had resulted in plenty on non-combat related casualties.
Everyone was paired with someone that could spot them and we began to lift. We were all getting a good workout when suddenly we felt the ship enter warp. A slight lurch and very faint feeling that could almost be called a tingle. If you didn't know what it was then you probably wouldn't pay it any mind. But we all knew what it was. Weights were racked and all eyes went to me.
"You know where we're goin' staffsarnt?" Int asked.
"Not a damned clue. We'll probably get told at our briefing," I said.
"Could put the monitors on," Yunk suggested.
I nodded at Gruff to go ahead as we felt the ship come out of warp. Same sensation but backwards. Hell of a feeling, but it's very fleeting and will only bother you if you focus on it too hard. Gruff got up and tapped one of the mirrors a couple of times, and it changed to an external view of the ship. I always thought this was a better idea than the glass windows you see on bougie shuttles.
"This looks like... Alpha Centauri, I'm pretty sure," CPL Chang chimed in.
"Yeah, there's the shipyards. But... hey sarnt could you activate the highlights?" LCPL Livingstone asked.
"I'm not your fucking remote, marine," SGT Gruff growled as he tapped the screen again.
"Yeah, there we go. We're definitely in Alpha Centauri. All the shipyards, and nowhere else are you gonna see that many... other ships... Wait..." Chang trailed off.
I looked at the screen a bit closer and it took a moment to realize that the ships that were highlighted weren't the typical civilian ships that you'd normally see. There were carriers and battleships, far more than there should be. Even if we had rendezvoused with the rest of Second Fleet there wouldn't be this many. Don't get me wrong, it's not like I could count them. But we were looking at our grouping plus three others, with a fuck ton of ships per grouping.
"Hey staffsarnt, you ever seen more than one fleet in the same place at the same time?" Gruff asked.
"Nope," I said.
"Yeah, me neither."
"What's going on?" PFC Rogers asked with a bit of fear in his voice.
Time to be a leader.
"Who gives a fuck? It ain't none of our damned business until it's made our business, marine," I said with a knifehand for emphasis and more than a little impatience. "Gruff, turn it back to mirror mode. The rest of you, back to sweating."
The rest of our workout was quiet. Nobody said a word even when we hit the showers. Nervous marines are a bad thing to be around. When someone who has been trained to efficiently end a life without hesitation gets nervous, so does everyone around them. This was evident by the silence from everyone that we passed. Either that or they knew more than we did and were nervous too.
We got to the briefing and I made certain everyone sat in the proper order. Highest to lowest by rank and alphabetical order, with top ranks up front. I glanced around. The entire company was here, all ten squads. Right around 130 marines. There was a low murmur in the room as we waited for the CO to take the podium. You could tell everyone was nervous, because it's normally about twenty decibels louder. Didn't usually get quiet until someone shouted...
"OFFICER ON DECK!"
Everyone shut up, stood up at attention, and saluted as our Battalion CO Colonel Hammerstein and Company CO Captain Michaels entered the room followed by some officers from the Navy. One of which was Captain Young, commander of the Liberty.
The other... If I remember my ranks right, is an admiral. Shit. The officers took the stage and returned our salute. The sound of 130 some-odd hands snapping back down was pretty satisfying.
"At ease, take your seats," Hammerstein began. "The current time is 0759, and we're beginning your mission brief. Good morning, Marines."
"GOOD MORNING, SIR!"
"First, introductions. You all know Captain Michaels. Hopefully," he laughed a little and continued with a gesture to the naval officers. "This is Captain Young of the USSS Liberty, and Admiral Archibald, commander of Second Fleet. They will be observing and assisting with this briefing. Oorah?"
"OORAH."
A screen lit up behind the colonel with images of a grouping of alien ships.
"We'll begin with some context. This is the Republic. Or their ships, rather. Sixteen days ago one of their ships performed a blind warp into Sol after taking heavy damage and began emitting an SOS. That ship is the Republic Space Vessel Lowelana, which means something like 'Fights with Honor'," he began.
The screen changed to show different alien ships, including technical schematics.
"This is the Omni-Union. While the U-triple-S Thanatos and U-triple-S Valor were attempting to rescue the RSV Lowelana, two OU destroyers entered Sol and attacked the Valor. These destroyers were terminated with prejudice. Oorah?"
"OORAH."
"During the, very brief, fight the Valor accepted a hail from one of the vessels, assuming they were surrendering and begging aid. The Valor came under cyberattack and briefly lost control of their systems, nearly firing upon the Lowelana before their crew could be rescued. Thankfully AI Tim was aboard to aid with the rescue and was able to fend off the attack. It was at this point we were able to determine that the Omni Union is a Virtual Intelligence Collective. VIC. A soon to be fitting acronym, oorah?"
"OORAH."
"Soon after the crew of the Lowelana was rescued, a small fleet of twenty OU ships entered Sol and began attacking. The Valor was able to escape the ambush and took out six OU ships before returning to the Thanatos. They would have taken out more, but the Omni Union deployed a warp disruption technology dissimilar to what we've seen before. The Thanatos deployed its other frigates, which cleaned up the rest of this fleet. Ten days ago we made diplomatic contact with the Republic and they pledged a defense fleet for Sol. Seven days ago, the Omni Union attacked Sol again with over 500 ships. Part of tenth fleet had been deployed to Sol for defense and was able to successfully defend the system. Oorah?"
"OORAH."
"Since then Fourth Fleet has taken over the defense of Sol and Republic forces have arrived to fortify that defense. Admiral Archibald will take it from here," Colonel Hammerstein finished.
The colonel and the admiral exchanged salutes as Archibald took the podium.
"Good morning, Marines," the Admiral began with a smile.
"GOOD MORNING, SIR!"
"As some of you may have noticed, we are currently in Alpha Centauri along with Third, Fifth, Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth fleets. Intelligence has identified two things. The first is a target, an enemy stronghold that we plan to take for further intelligence gathering," he paused for a moment and then continued. "The second is damning evidence that the enemy is xenocidal."
The images on the screen changed to pictures of slaughtered aliens with tentacles for mouths and a deep silence fell over the room. Some marines were probably contemplating the stakes. Others were probably remembering the history of the Daluran war. Most were probably thinking of their families, like me. A beautiful wife, son, and daughter were waiting for me back on Elaris station. I felt my face involuntarily scowl at the thought of harm coming to them. I didn't have to look around to know that the faces surrounding me mirrored my own.
"I want to be absolutely clear, gentlemen. We won't know what to expect on the ground until we get in system, and we may not have enough time to share that intel with you before we have to get you on the dirt. This is going to be high stakes. But you've trained for this. You're the tip of the spear. There isn't a single trooper in this universe who can go toe to toe with a United Systems Marine. We don't know if the enemy can fear. We don't know if the enemy can feel pain. But you're sure as SHIT going to find out," Archibald said with a slam of his fist on the podium.
"OORAH!"
"Captain Michaels will outline your part of the mission," he said, and stepped away from the podium.
Captain Michaels stepped up to the podium and said, "I want your complete attention and silence until I finish with this brief. Our company has been tasked with escorting AI Omega planet side."
The screen changed from the dead aliens to an image of a black crate with antennas and such sticking out of it.
"These devices will be Omega's lifeline. The AI will be jumping from box to box as it attacks the Omni-Union inside their own systems. Omega will also be gathering much needed intel as it goes. These boxes MUST survive. Your mission is to escort the box to the surface, protect it, and escort it back to exfil. Omega will be in communication with you and may give further orders as things develop. If it says to move, you move. If it says to bark like a dog, it better be the best impression of a canine you've ever done. To be absolutely crystal clear, Omega outranks everyone in this room."
The screen changed once again to show a view of a solar system.
"There are five Omni-Union planets. OU Alpha, OU Bravo, OU Charlie, OU Delta, and OU Echo," he said as the screen highlighted each planet with their designation. "We'll be going in alphabetical order. Land, dig in, defend, and exfil. To piggyback off of what Admiral Archibald said, we don't have any intel regarding enemy defenses, positions, or even our landing zones. And we won't until we get there. The only thing that we do know is that the Omni Union DO have foot-soldiers that are mechanical and use directed energy weapons. These lasers are expected to be weaker than our own, but you'd be foolish to count on that. Omega will attempt to provide you with intel as we gain it, but remember that Omega has its own mission. Keep your head down and blow off the enemy's, and we'll all go home happy. This operation will commence when our fleets are back up to full strength. We'll let you know before we jump."
The screen shut off and Captain Michaels stepped away from the podium. Colonel Hammerstein stepped back up to the podium.

(remember - you can feel lonely even If you're surrounded by others - If there's no emotional bond) I'm fed up of meeting people who never make any time for me & only text me once or twice a week to ask me "what are you up to?" Out of boredom.I don't want to meet people asking others a million of questions like "what's your favorite movie?" Just to give you one word answer and ask you another question "and music? Your favorite song?" I'm looking for something "deeper" & different🙂
What kind of friend would I like to find? Someone to talk to on a daily basis - Someone who needs It & wants It just as much as me
Do you ever feel like an option? Like a stranger to others despite knowing them for months or years & talking to them quite often? Like there's always something and someone more important than you and you just..don't fit in and no matter what you do - your effort is never appreciated?

I'm always the one texting people immediately (or at the very least trying to) no matter where I am and who I am with (family) others? Never - except for one exception.A really lovely person.

What are my expectations? I would like to meet someone in a similar situation – why? Because I honestly feel like only a person with the same expectations and a similar outlook on life would get along with me & because I feel more comfortable talking to people like me..Friendless people who need a strong bond - people without friends and without partners..Don't get me wrong…Most people deserve to be happy and It's good to have friends but people who have friends or families in real life are usually more focused on them ( which is completely understandable) & have less time for others + I simply don't want to be replaced by anyone..I kind of envy people who can call others , true friends given I don't have an emotional bond with any of my acquaintances. Whenever I hear that others have friends I simply get sad because (believe it or not) If I had to choose between 20 people to talk to (Acquaintances) and one special person - I'd choose that one special person without any hesitation .. I also want to talk to others on a daily basis mainly because..I want to see someone’s effort & be someone's first choice - not another person to have random conversations with..Why I'd rather talk to people from my continent? Well..Mainly because I would like to see someone I'd get along with - In the far future - face to face :) + I don't want to wait any longer than 6 hours to receive a message - Especially given most people are always available on social media sites & keep their phones in a pocket.Once you receive & open my message - get back to me (If you're as serious as I am & really need a true friend) waiting 6 hours to receive a message is more than enough
I'm by no means criticising people who don't want to talk to others often / People who really are super busy & People who want to find someone to have non important conversations with - I'm aware that not everyone has the same expectations which is why everything you're reading now - is here for a reason.All I'm suggesting is - I don't want anything temporary and I don't want to be the one always giving more than receiving.

Listen people - I used to ignore being..ignored by others..always being just an option to talk to during tough times or moments of boredom.I was too young to realize that I was never important enough for most people that were a part of my life

I don't know who needs to hear this but..No one is too busy to make time for you! People make excuses to avoid others because they prioritize everything and (maybe) everyone..over them. It's true that most people really are busy - but It takes only a few seconds to start a conversation (If you're into short messages) and a few minutes (1-10/15) to type a long message Don't let anyone lie to you.Truth is that most people either don't like you enough to make time for you or just simply - feel no need to talk to others often but are they too busy? No..
You don't need to send me a message just to ask me and tell me "Do you really want to talk daily? I like long messages but I can't promise to contact you often" If you really are unsure please don't send me a message.I don't need more acquaintances aka people to talk to - occasionally

I'm not trying to sound rude - I just don't want to meet new people and get emotionally attached - only to end up being left alone after weeks or months of daily conversations.I'm sick of that never ending story and always meeting people who ghost me without a single word (even if everything seems to be ok) or people who "change priorities" over time & become like strangers…I don't want to go through this ever again.

It’s always possible to find someone to have a random conversation with – someone willing to send you one message once or twice a week..but..It’s almost impossible to find people willing to make time for you.I’m not asking a busy person to make time for me by changing some plans! Strong friendships are based on mutual support. One of the best things you can do for a friend in need, is just to be there for them when they want to talk.I often see posts from people who always say how friendless they are because they don't feel loved or appreciated by their "friends" remember! A true friend - someone who truly likes you or someone who wants to get to know you - will always find time for you. 🙂 I'm not really interested in small talk/short messages - I love long and meaningful conversations. It's so easy to find someone who loves abbreviations and questions like "How are you?" How was your day? Or what are you interested in? But so hard/almost impossible to find a person who knows how to keep a conversation going & show others some effort.Building and maintaining friendships takes time and effort.Never allow pursuits or possessions to become bigger priorities than your relations with other people.Close friendships are so important to us because they are so difficult to form + Having friends can help you feel as if you belong to something that brings purpose and connection to your life.

• I don’t respond to messages I don’t find interesting even If they're long - If after receiving and reading your message I don't feel comfortable or think "I wouldn't get along with him/her" I simply do not respond (what I’m suggesting is that I don’t always respond to someone’s first or second message because..sometimes you just know If you’d get along with someone or not- I’d never ignore anyone after days or weeks of daily conversations though) just because I don’t want to do anything forcefully & because I don’t want to lead anyone on. Friendships should be natural – not forced.Both people wanting to be friends should feel comfortable and have something in common. No - not necessarily a similar taste in music or movies but something else..Most friendships don't fizzle out because of people not having the same hobbies but..because they just simply have different expectations when It comes to something important.

You can share your problems with me - I absolutely don't mind "complaining" as I've been through a lot in my life.What do people usually tell you when you tell them that's something's wrong? "Don't complain" or "Life's not over yet - one day you'll be happy" or "There are worse situations than yours" and..obviously "Find a therapist" Life's not a fairytale and sometimes things don't go as planned.Emotions shouldn't be bottled up.I'm sick of people always telling others "everything's gonna be ok" move on " & more..Trust me people - not everyone wants to hear "Just believe in yourself and everything's gonna be ok" Some people take it as reassurance. But others see it as false hope. Imagine being told that things will be okay, only for them to get worse..Do you guys know why telling someone "everything's gonna be ok" Is wrong? Because you can't see the future. You can't guarantee others that one day they'll finally be happy + when It comes to social interactions - We're only responsible for ourselves - not for others & as you guys know people let us down quite often (sometimes even when there's no reason) so instead of telling people how they should move on,forget everything and be happy or asking them to find a therapist - be there for them! Always be willing to listen to them If you really like them or want to get to know them & don't suggest everyone in a tough situation to find a therapist because a therapist won't ever replace a true friend + It's quite normal to be disappointed If people always do something to hurt you.Sharing your hardships with other people in a very similar situation or exactly the same one - is VERY helpful If the other person understands you & wants to start all over by just letting it all out & feeling emotional support instead of always hearing some "positive quotes" or someone saying "Stop complaining let's talk about something else"

Tabletop Role Play Games have role play in the title, does that mean an ideal goal is to become an actor and play the role of our characters? For some people it might be, for others maybe not.
^{Disclaimer: These are my personal views after years of DMing multiple games with players are varying abilities and different expectations. I decided to post this as I feel some people might find it useful.
I may have years of experience but my learning will never be complete, I am at times wrong.}

What is roleplaying at it’s base level?

There are regular posts with questions such as “How can I encourage my players to roleplay more?” I think we should readjust what we mean by that. Playing a tabletop rpg is in fact role playing already. A player’s character is responding to a setting and scene differently than the player might necessarily respond. This is the roleplaying aspect.
Looking for players to talk in character or participate in interactions more, is going the extra mile. This is where everyone’s expectations vary.

What roleplaying a character means in RPGs?

Maybe it is time to start thinking about any RPGs as STGs (Story Telling Games). Players and Game Masters are telling a story together. Does telling a story require everyone to talk in voices, take on characteristics etc as their character? I personally don’t think so. I can tell a story about a character without pretending to be that character at all.

Clive shuffles uncomfortably towards the front of the queue, they timidly say “Can I have one ticket please?”

From that sentence you can tell how my character acts and speaks, it didn’t require any input from me other than typing it out (or saying that sentence in person).

How does this help our games?

We all have different expectations, this is human. Our expectations aren’t always aligned with others. This is one reason behind having a Session Zero¹ in games, it helps align expectations and develop boundaries. Perhaps in our Session Zero¹ we could raise the topic of roleplaying a character. Maybe a simple statement will help give players confidence and set a basic level for everyone to take.

“We are going to be playing a story telling game, you each have characters to play and at moments in the game I (as GM) will ask you (as players) to describe what it looks like as your character does an action or interaction. This could be a simple as giving a short description using a single Adverb².
For example “Bob responds angrily” or “Lucy moves gracefully.”
If there is an action which would benefit from more detail I will ask for some elaboration, this can be responded to out of character or in character.
An example of this could be me asking “Why does Bob respond angrily?” for the player to answer “Bob responded that way because they really don’t want to do that plan and don’t feel like they are being heard.”
This gives insight to myself and other players. We will be in a better positioned to respond. If you would like to add more or describe in greater details or have moments you talk to each other in character that is up to your personal level of comfort to do, however be aware other players might only want to respond in the minimal way as I’ve just described. How does everyone feel about that?”

This sets a minimum expectation which is very achievable for everyone. It allows players the option to start small, and as they become use to their character they may expand their immersion in the story telling.

¹ Session Zero can be had at any point during a game and I encourage you do have them regularly to check in with everyone, helping to maintain expectations and boundaries. They can be a long as a full session or a short part at the beginning or end of a regular session.
