Also open to reviewing your offers! I am mostly looking for retro games or games I don't currently own for the Nintendo Switch, particularly RPGs & platformers. To see what I currently own, you can view my pricecharting collection which I keep relatively up-to-date.
I am not currently looking to sell anything, I am mostly just interested in trading for a few games I really want.
Photos available upon request after mutual interest in trade is determined.

2023.03.24 13:02 Familiar_Surprise485 FOOTSTEPS PART 1
My family moved into a new house situated away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I was sixteen at the time, my brother was fourteen. We got along as well as two teenagers could. That is we’d fight and make up on a nearly daily basis.
My dad had gotten a new job as a contractor which required us to move. Honestly, I really wasn’t for the idea. I’d be leaving my friends (plus my girlfriend Beth) as well as starting at a new school. I wasn’t nearly social at the best of times, and most times I could be damn well reserved. My brother was the spirited one in the family.
The best way to describe our new place was it was off the main town road and half a mile through the woods on a dusty weather-beaten road. The house was located on half an acre of prime woodland in the middle of a clearing, with trees all around us. Our nearest neighbor was about 100 metres away from our house. Not too far but far enough that we felt we had the place to ourselves.
Coming from living in a small, cramped apartment, our new place was the complete opposite. A two storey stone building with three bedrooms and a lot of space to go wild in. Not to mention the aforementioned huge plot of land and you can imagine the difference from staying in an apartment in the city, especially to two teenage boys who didn’t know better. However, that also brought an intense sense of isolation. And as you’ll see, that poses its own set of problems.
Our first week went as well as it could. My mum adored the place, and said it felt like we were living in a fairy tale setup, what with us being in the middle of the woods and having wildlife around us (we’d spot deer prancing about in the trees at the edge of our property). My brother and I were indifferent, though I suspect he liked it more than I did. We’d started at a new school and were slowly getting acclimatized to the new environment. Things were mundane but okay. That is before our lives became a living hell.
About one week after we’d settled in, I woke up startled in the middle of the night. I don’t know what woke me up. Disoriented I sat up in bed. My room was dark to the point that I couldn’t see my hand in front of my face. I realized that my shirt was drenched in sweat and that my throat was parched. I must have had a bad dream and just couldn’t remember it. Clearly, it must have been bad to wake me up in a fright.
I decided to get out of bed and go get a glass of water from the kitchen. I stumbled around to the door and opened it, stepping out into the hallway. I turned on the hallway light and walked to the kitchen and got some water from the tap. This being the middle of the night, in a clearing in the woods, it was deathly silent. You could literally hear each groan and moan of the house settling, each chirp of crickets and each hoot of an owl as it went about looking for food. Which is when I realized something.
There was no sound outside the house.
Ever since we had moved to our new place, it had taken some getting used to the incessant sounds made by the critters we called our neighbors. Be it frogs croaking or the aforementioned night time birds. But that night, there were no critters singing their joyful melodies. It was silent. Apart from another sound that petrified me to the bone.
Footsteps.
Someone was pacing outside our house. I could hear as the dirt crunched under his feet. He was circling around the house, slowly and methodically. Each footstep amplified in the quiet woodland air. Crunch, crunch, crunch.
I held my breath and turned off the kitchen light and sneaked to the window and slowly parted the curtain a crack. The footsteps were on the other side of the house but I could hear them coming around and towards the kitchen. Towards the parted curtain. Towards me.
I swallowed as they got closer, and closer and closer, till finally they were there. At the window. My throat caught as I anticipated to see somebody, but..nothing. The footsteps passed my window and continued. That is when it hit me that whoever was out there was crouching as he walked, just below the window and below my eye level.
That terrified me more than the fact that there was someone outside the window. Had he known I was there and crouched just as he got to the window, or was he walking around in that position like our prehistoric ancestors. Neither thought appealed to me.
I was the only one who stayed on the ground floor as my parents and brother all stayed upstairs. I slinked up the stairs like a ghoul and rushed to my parent’s bedroom. I shook my dad awake. He opened his eyes groggily and started at me like he didn’t know who I was. I explained to him what had happened and his eyes slowly grew into focus as he started realizing what I was saying.
He got out of bed and picked a flashlight by his bed and hightailed it down the stairs. He flung open the front door, me behind him peeing anxiously over his shoulder. “Hello!” he yelled shining his torch out into the darkness. There was nothing there and of course nobody yelled back. He looked at me incredulously.
“I’m not making it up dad,” I said, panic raising in my voice. “I know what I heard!”
He grumbled and told me to go to bed.
I lay in my bed, staring up at the ceiling, my mind racing 100 miles per hour.
There was a knock on my door, and it quietly opened. My brother Todd walked in and sat on the edge of my bed.
I turned on my bedside light and looked at him. His eyes were large and panicked. My brother was the easy going, and passive member of the family. So this look he was wearing was not him. And I did not care for it.
“What’s up?” I asked.
He stared at me like he wasn’t looking at me but past me.
“I heard them too,” he whispered, almost inaudibly.
Almost on cue the footsteps started somewhere outside the house. Slow and methodical. Crunch, crunch, crunch.
End of Part 1

2023.03.24 13:00 SethHMG An Relationship with the City of New Orleans
I wrote the following as a description of a relationship with the City of New Orleans. I’ve posted it as a comment In a thread or two. A friend suggested that I make a post for it on its own.
Disclaimer: don’t assume anything that follows is autobiographical.
“Relationship w NOLA… Swampy. Hot. Loud. But it’s the kinda sex that makes neighbors call in a noise complaint (they’re just jealous, and the cops don’t show up anyway). Often washes you out into the street. Often involves beads and a random kitchen appliance. But so good it restores your faith in god. Says she loves you and only you.
Then you catch her checking her phone at odd hours when she thinks you’re asleep. Strangers start showing up in droves. You wake up in strange places, and cash is always missing from your wallet. Every time you go to her house, you’re nearly mugged, and cars you’ve never seen parked on the block suddenly pull off. You start to rethink your life choices while sitting on her porch. You head inside to talk, but she’s passed out in a pile of empty Abita bottles. Heading back outside, your car’s been towed.
Putting your shoes back on, you discover her pet possum shit in one and puked up Dixie in the other. The nutria from under her house got high on your RX Meds. Raccoons took your one credit card that hasn’t been maxed out to buy cartons of cigarettes and a 5th of vodka. An alligator tries to communicate with you in the “universal language” while you look for your keys.
You almost get arrested under the Claiborne overpass while getting your car back. You go back to her place and climb into bed with her, but suddenly, “things” stop working. She’s not getting off, and you’re only half mast at best. You try to get an appointment with someone who can fix things, but the office is always closed or out to lunch. On the few occasions you connect with a human, they’re insanely rude, except for one sweet old lady who treats you like an adopted grandchild.
You start hanging out in a neighborhood bar, swapping tales with all the other guys she’s fucked. They’re all mirrors of you; your youthful vibrance has turned an ashy grey. You find yourself saying, “Hell, maybe next year” a lot.
You think about breaking things off, but she always shows up dressed to the 9s riiiiight as you start to pack your bags. She shows you a wild time that makes you forget all of the doubt and indecision and inconsistency.
You’re 20 pounds overweight, have a mild to moderate drinking problem, and you’re damn near broke. But she’s asking you to eat the pralines she let cool on her nipples.
You land in jail after fighting with some guy, a friggin “tourist”, you catch in her back yard. He doesn’t love her like you do. You drink some prison toilet wine with a guy named 3-Toe-Moe who lost the digits while serving in the Merchant Marines; he says his mom was a voodoo priestess. The toilet hooch makes you hallucinate, and it beats having 3 Hurricanes in terms of the hangover severity (you puke for both color and distance).
She bails you out and takes you home. You help her bail some water out of her living room; then y’all give up and fuck on the porch until you get lightheaded from mosquito related blood loss.
Her family visits, and they all tell you that you’d be better off with one of her sisters, but they don’t know what they’re talking about.
NOLA might be a dying harlot, but you love her anyway.”
TL;DR: in other words, it’s a highly dysfunctional relationship full of intermittent reinforcement.
Note: I have sent drafts to the tourism board, but their only reply has been in the form of a TRO.

2023.03.24 13:00 LornieLoo84 So down
I'm hating being a puppy mum right now!
Got our lurcher puppy at 9 weeks old.... he's now 4.5 months and training was great up until 10 days ago. Now he's turned wild! He's biting, growling and jumping at everything and everyone all the time. I think he's playing but he's biting so hard my daughters arm is bruised and scratched to pieces! 😭 he's also so big that he's up at the kitchen counters constantly like we've never fed him 🤦🏻♀️
I'm getting so desperate! I'm actually thinking about rehoming him 😔

2023.03.24 12:32 -Bonjour-- Discovering the Southwest of Australia
From my travel report (2005/2006):
During our 1st Australia trip we already spent some time in PERTH and therefore knew the city and surroundings quite well. Towards the north we had already visited the Pinnacles and Monkey Mia with the dolphins in Shark Bay.
Therefore, we now wanted to look at the rather unknown southwest. And it was worth it!
From Perth we first drove south through the so-called Wheat Belt to get to HYDEN. This is a place where you really only go to see the WAVE ROCK. After we checked into our room at the Hyden Motel, we visited the Magic Lake about 1 km away - the water there is poison green.
Because of the heat we walked to Wave Rock and Hippo's Yawn in the late afternoon. Unfortunately we couldn't stay there too long, because even in December there were many flies. Hippo's Yawn was formed by erosion and actually looks like a hippo's mouth.Wave Rock, 15 meters high and 110 meters long, is an amazing rock formation, created by chemical erosion over thousands of years. Rainwater created pink and gray streaks on the huge granite wave.
To get to Kalgoorlie - our next destination - one normally drives via Mount Walker, Narrembin, Merredin and South Cross. But our landlord recommended us to drive the unpaved road - actually not allowed with rental cars - from Hyden to the Great Eastern Highway - because this route is much shorter. And since the road was completely dry, we did it that way. We drove through the beautiful bush landscape with many flowers to the Great Eastern Highway, and on the approx. 2 hours long drive we encountered "believe it or not" only 8 cars.
KALGOORLIE is an interesting old gold mining town. We spent the night at the Quality Inn Railway. It was so hot there that we didn't explore the town until late afternoon. There are many historic buildings, especially on Hannan Street.
We drove to the Mont Charlotte Lookout with a nice view of the city and the surrounding area. Mount Charlotte is the site of the O'Connor Water Reservoir. The pipeline brings water from about 560 km away near Perth to Kalgoorlie.
The heritage of the mining pioneers is still alive in the city, although nowadays, of course, only modern mining technology is used.
Australia's wealth depends on its mines. After mining, however, it unfortunately looks like a lunar landscape.... But it is interesting all the same!
The next morning we drove to the Super Pit Lookout to have a look into the depth, where giant machines look like toy cars. The Super Pit is 320 m deep, 3.2 km long and 1.3 km wide. In 1893 gold was found for the first time and until today there is the largest open pit mine in the world, where gold is mined and since the 1960s also nickel, uranium and lead. We also visited the Mining Hall of Fame, where extensive memorabilia from the old mining days was displayed in a large open-air area.
We also drove to BOULDER. This town was merged with Kalgoorlie in 1989. In Boulder only the railroad station is of interest, because the Indian Pacific stops here.
From Kalgoorlie we went on to ESPERANCE. We stayed overnight at the Best Western Hospitality Inn, located directly on the beautiful bay. Esperance took its development around 1895 because many people set out from there for the Gold Spring. Esperance has a mild climate and very beautiful surroundings with many small islands, great beaches and huge nature parks.
The next morning we first explored the Great Ocean Drive near Esperance with some very nice beaches. We made stops at Rotary Lookout with a view of Esperance, the bay and islands, at Twilight Beach and Blue Haven Beach and at Pink Lake.
Another excursion we made was of course to CAPE-LE-GRAND National Park. The national park is located about 50 km from Esperance in southern direction. It is one of the most spectacular parks of Australia with the wild coast, the heath landscape, the granite peaks and the rocks formed by erosion. The first stop we made was at Rossiter Bay.
Lucky Bay has been awarded several times as one of the top 10 beaches in the world. The beach is simply gorgeous, but unfortunately the crystal clear water is so cold that you can probably only swim there with a wetsuit. Each bay is uniquely enclosed with striking granite rocks - simply picturesque postcard motifs!
The imposing Whistling Rock can be seen from far away. It got its name because it seems to whisper depending on the strength of the wind. The sound is created when the wind whistles through the cracks and holes in the rock.
Hellfire Beach - my favorite beach - is located in a sheltered bay and framed by flat rocks. The whole area with the beautiful beaches was completely deserted. After all, we were there for a few hours and didn't see a single person there. The Grand Beach is really - as its name says - huge, also with almost white sand. Unfortunately it was so windy there that we didn't stay there for long.
We went on to ALBANY. Before the harbor in Fremantle was built, Albany was the most important harbor for the British Crown in Australia at that time. Albany has about 16,000 inhabitants and has an extensive natural harbor in the bay "King George Sound". It is the oldest settlement in Western Australia. We were able to rent a nice little house in Albany for a few days. During a walk through the town we saw some nice historic houses. The former whale station is a museum. From Albany you can still watch whales very well. St. John's Church from 1848 is the first Anglican church in Western Australia and reminds of an English country church. From Mount Clarence you have a nice view of the bay and the city. From there we drove to Emu Point beach, but unfortunately there were many annoying flies, so we did not stay long.
The next day we drove over the French Bay Road to the TORNDIRRUP National Park with the Natural Bridge and the Gap. Here you can see fantastic rock formations, formed 47 million years ago when Australia and Antarctica broke apart. Unfortunately the "Blow Holes" did not "blow", but instead there were many annoying flies. The park is 3900 ha large and offers cliffs, crevices and spout holes as well as beaches and lush vegetation between the headlands. A point of interest is the Natural Bridge made of granite. From the "Gap" you can look into a 30 m deep rock cut.
We also made a "side trip" to the 1913 founded STIRLING RANGES National Park. Of the 298 km there we drove 42 km on natural roads. The mountains in the national park are famous for their magnificent play of colors and are partly over 1000 m high and altogether more than 65 km long. There are well signposted but steep hiking trails and many picnic areas. Outside the park is a replica of a 16th century windmill that was still in full operation. A Dutch couple runs a small restaurant in the original 1924 railroad building next door. The highest peak is Bluff Knoll at 1063 meters. After a picnic at Bluff Knoll Lookout we drove the almost 300 km back to Albany.
We continued our trip on Beach Road via Denmark with good surfing possibilities to WALPOLE-NORNALUP National Park. This national park is about 18.000 ha big with rivers, over 400 years old up to 70m high Karri trees with a circumference up to 20 m, waterfalls and many wild flowers in spring. An attraction is the 600 m long Tree Top Walk up to 40 m above the ground, where you get a good impression of the huge trees. Maybe this walk is one of the reasons that the Valley of Giants is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Western Australia
We stayed overnight at the Best Western in Pemperton. From there we made a trip to GLOUCESTER National Park. This park is best known for the huge 62 m high Karri tree. Since 1947 there is one of the highest fire lookouts in the world on this tree. From up there you have of course a fantastic view, if you dare to go up there. My husband was brave enough and climbed up to the "Fire lookout".
AUGUSTA was founded in 1830 and is the third oldest town in Western Australia. We stayed there at the "Holiday Unit Cove". A beautiful beach near Augusta is located in Flinders Bay, and again many annoying flies. This bay is especially popular with surfers. We still ventured - despite heavy rain - to CAPRE LEEWIN, 9 km away. Unfortunately we couldn't get out of the car, it was too stormy to open the car doors. In addition, the rain then became a real downpour. The next day we got out of the car at the lighthouse, which was built more than 100 years ago. Cape Leeuwin is the geographical point where the Indian and the Southern Ocean meet and is also the most southwestern corner of Australia. We still admired the "Water Wheel" that the workers used to get fresh water when building the lighthouse.
MARGARET RIVER was settled by Europeans in 1850 and became a center for agriculture and logging. Now, however, it is dominated by vineyards, as the climate is ideal for growing grapes. The town is located about 10 km from the sea, on the coast there are beautiful beaches and also ideal surfing. It was Christmas Day and we spent the afternoon at Gnarup Beach. We had tried in vain to enjoy a nice Christmas dinner, but unfortunately most restaurants were closed. And those that were open were, of course, fully booked. Fortunately, we had an emergency supply with us, which we then more or less "enjoyed" on the terrace of our room at "Comfort Inn The Grange".... The 2nd Christmas Day then went better: we made a wine tour at various wineries with a gourmet lunch in the program. It went to the wineries "Windance" - had for me the best wines, but they were quite expensive- "Flying Fish" and "Knotting Hill Winery". And finally we visited the Colonial Brewery, a real "hangout" for the Australians.
We continued via Dunsbury at the beautiful Geographic Bay to BUSSELTON. In this area there are about 30 km of beaches to Cape Naturaliste, ideal for all water sports. On the road between Dunsbury and Busselton two kangaroos ran across the road in front of us, which is rarely seen. Because mostly they lie dead on the roadside. Well, these two had survived at least for the moment.
The 2 km long 140 year old "Jetty" in Busselton is a wooden construction, one of the longest jetties in Australia and reminds of the beginnings of the town as a timber handling port. The jetty is only secured on one side, so you have to be careful not to take an involuntary dip. There wasn't too much choice of recommendable accommodation in Busselton, so we only stayed for one night.
BUNBURY is the second largest city in Western Australia and is located on a peninsula. Since the 19th century, the city developed into a busy port and regional industrial center. We had no trouble finding accommodation here, at the "Lighthouse Beach Resort". Bunbury is a good place to watch dolphins. In a large supermarket in Bunbury we bought supplies, because we had rented a small townhouse (Ocean Villas) for a few weeks at our next destination - Scarborough.
SCARBOROUGH or SCARBORO is a small town with about 12,000 inhabitants, 15 minutes by car from Perth. Directly on the beach is the only higher house - a luxury hotel. Otherwise there are luxury villas as well as simple smaller houses - often for rent. At the esplanade you can find restaurants, cafes and small stores. There is a supermarket and of course the "bottle store", which is almost obligatory in Australia, selling alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. A few minutes by car further north you will find a bigger supermarket, and fruit and vegetables can be bought cheaper in Wannerou Market a bit east of Scarboro. There is a bus connection to Perth if you don't want to drive.
Scarboro is known for its beautiful white sand beaches, but the surf is usually very strong. At the beach of Scarboro is actually always "something going on". The kite surfers or bodysurfers can be found on the beach every day in the conditions. On the weekends there are mostly events on the beach, e.g. competitions of the Baywatch teams from different places.
To Trigg Beach, 1.4 km away, you can walk along the promenade and don't have to trudge through the deep sand. South of Scarboro there is Cottesloe Beach or closer to Perth City Beach and further north Sorrento Beach at Hillarys - so you are spoiled for choice with the beaches. It was of course very hot at this time of year, and sporting activities - except water sports - are best postponed to early morning or sometimes late afternoon. Because in the afternoon occasionally came the "Fremantle Doctor" - that is a refreshing wind that blows in the hot summer from Fremantle towards Perth.
On New Year's Eve, we ordered a table in time in a restaurant with first-class seafood, because we didn't want to experience the same disappointment as at Christmas in Margaret River. It was relatively quiet in Scarboro that evening. We drank the chilled champagne in "our" house, since drinking alcohol on the street or on the beach is prohibited. This was also controlled by the police - well, maybe one has made bad experiences.
From Scarboro we also made a trip to JOODALUP LAKE to see the black swans, which to my knowledge only exist in Western Australia.
PERTH with about 1.4 million inhabitants is the third largest city in Australia. It is very remote, because the next bigger city - Adelaide - is about 2700 km away. Perth was founded in 1929 and is today a modern metropolis with high-rise towers, pedestrian zones in the center, shopping centers, many parks and a lively cultural and art scene. In the Australian summer it is very hot and dry, so the already mentioned "Freemantle Doctor" is always welcome. In winter, however, the average temperature is "only" about 17°. Perth is one of the most beautiful cities in Australia and is located at the Swan River and not at the sea as some might assume. The center is easy to explore on foot. Otherwise there are free cat buses with three different routes where you can get a good overview of the city. Worth seeing is the bell tower at Barrack Square and the shopping street "London Court". Directly at Barrack Square there is a much frequented "Hangout". The district of Northbridge is known for many restaurants and entertainment in the evening. Interesting for shopping is the "Outlet Mall Harbour Town". In Perth, despite many modern buildings, there are still historic buildings: e.g. Government House from 1864, Town Hall from 1867 and His Majesty's Theatre from 1904.
The approx. 400 ha large Kings Park was founded at the end of the 19th century and is located above the city center. In former times it was a holy place for the Aborigines. Today the park is still mostly original bush land. It is worth coming here for the beautiful view of the Perth skyline and the Swan River alone. Of course you can also hike and picnic in this large park. The Perth Zoo is located on the south bank of the Swan River and is worth a visit. If you haven't seen kangaroos in the wild, at least you have that opportunity here.
A special for us unforgettable experience in Perth was Australia Day. We exceptionally went by bus from Scarboro to Perth, because on this day parking places in the city are scarce. This day is celebrated like a big folk festival, especially on the banks of the Swan River, which forms a lake here. The Australians organize a huge picnic with the whole family. There is music everywhere and countless events and displays on the water with boats and in the air with helicopters and aerobatic squadrons. As it got dark, 2 helis flew over the water. One with a huge Australian flag, the other illuminated this flag with a spotlight. In addition, the Australian national anthem sounded, which was eagerly sung along. A "goose bumps" experience that we will certainly never forget. Finally, there was a huge fireworks display.
The SWAN VALLEY is mainly known for wine growing. The main town is Guildford. Of course we did not miss the opportunity to visit some wineries, to taste and buy wine. In the Swan Valley you can drive along the Swan Valley Drive. There you will pass the oldest church in Western Australia "All Saints Church". At "Oggies Ice Creamery" you can eat delicious ice cream. And in the German beer garden "Duckstein Brewery" you can drink beer.
We also took a trip from Scarboro to AVON VALLEY. NORTHAM on the Avon with many historic buildings is the largest town in the interior of Western Australia and is located in the heart of the Avon Valley and originated as an agricultural center at the beginning of the colonial period. Around 1890 the town was also one of the gateways to the goldfields of Kalgoorlie. TOODYAY is also home to 19th century architecture. YORK originated in 1831 with many historic 19th century houses is the oldest town in the Avon Valley. In all three villages there are suspension bridges for pedestrians over the river, the longest is in Northam.
The 18 square kilometers large WALYNUGA National Park is located in the Avon Valley. Here was one of the largest Aboriginal settlements in the Perth region. In summer the Avon River has calm, water-filled pools for swimming, but in winter it becomes a raging river with numerous rapids.
YANCHEP National Park is located about an hour's drive north of Perth. The park, about 28 square kilometers in size, was established in 1957 and is rich in fauna and flora. Most people come here to admire koalas. We wanted to hike on the Wetland walk trail - passing Wagurdu Lake and Loch McNess. But unfortunately we had to turn back after 2/3 of the way. A bush fire had destroyed two bridges further ahead - was not indicated at the beginning of the trail...
On the 240 m long Koala Boardwalk you can observe the animals in a natural environment. They are busy either eating or lounging. The area for the koalas is a separate fenced part of the national park - so not quite "free range". But theoretically the animals could leave the area. The big gray kangaroos, which should also be in the park, we have unfortunately not seen - perhaps the wrong time of day.
In FREMANTLE directly at the sea south of Perth - which we already got to know well on a previous trip - there are free cat buses as well. A much visited "hangout" in this town is "Little Creative Brewery" with good pub food. You can also sit outside right on the water.

2023.03.24 12:11 No-Coast-Punk I just delayed retirement for a few years in exchange for independence.
I'm 39. NW is ~$350k. I have about $200k in brokerage accounts and ~$150k in home equity.
I zeroed out in the '08 recession when my business failed, so I'm playing catch up and taking risks.
I bought a historic house the VA had declared uninhabitable in a "gentrifying" neighborhood. In the first few months I had to chase a few junkies out of my enclosed porch at gunpoint, and deal with one of those zombies in my kitchen late at night.
6 years later, Gentrification successful. I am walkable to a popular brewery, yoga studio, and smoothie bar. No more gunplay with junkies. The house has been mostly restored, and I now have an $1100/month mortgage/tax/insurance payment for a 3br place with oversized 3 car garage and 1800s old money construction. I can also be in Manhattan in under 2 hours.
Early last year I uncovered evidence of widespread fraud at my employer, and quit my high-paying job to go whistleblower. It was scary. 6 months of job interviews and nobody wanted to touch me. I had a feeling this would happen, and had my backup plan.
I used this opportunity to go back to school full time for a physics degree, while I was doing some consulting work for ~15-20 hrs/week.
Six (hard) college classes plus solving really hard engineering problems on the side was too much.
First thing I did this morning was transfer $35k out of my brokerage to wipe out the HELOC I took out for home renovations.
This gets my total spend below $2k/month.
Conveniently, I also have ~$2500/month coming in from the VA for the next 4 years.
I made the decision to just suck it up and be poor for a few years.
I don't have to work anymore.
It feels liberating after years and years of 60 plus hour work weeks and constant stress.
I don't have to work anymore. Not for a few years at least. I don't think I'll ever go back to full-time.
I don't care if this set my retirement goals back a few years. I know it's the right choice. For the first time in my adult life I don't feel any stress about anything. I'm probably adding years to my life by cruising into middle age with no stress.
Without my little nest egg, I would probably still be trapped in a soul-sucking job getting further and further down the rabbit hole of doing illegal stuff to cover for things in the past.
It's been a lot of sacrifice and hardship to get here, but today is the first day that it really feels like it's all been worth it.
Time to go hop in the car and head up North for a day of impromptu snowboarding, because fuck it, I'm independent now.

2023.03.24 11:35 123volt UAFX Dream '65 vs DSM Humboldt Simplifier DLX
A while ago, I had the opportunity of comparing the
Dream ’65 [D65] and the
Simplifier DLX [DLX]. These are my findings.
Universal Audio launched a strong marketing campaign on social media. I’m sure it’s just me but, quite frankly, I struggled to separate the genuine reviews and comments from the ads.
DSM Humboldt also promoted their products in various ways but in a much less aggressive fashion. Lost in the media soup, I decided to try both units myself.
Both units have no MIDI connectivity but the DLX allows channel switching and reverb on/off via a 3.5mm/1/8” TRS connection. DSM Humboldt supply an external unit for the switching but you can use any other units that follows the DXL specs described in the manual.
I carried out the tests with a direct connection to a Mackie mixer and Genelec speakers. As overdrive/distortion, I used a pedal inspired by the King Of Tone. As a guitar, I used a Fender Stratocaster SSS and an Ibanez 7 string SSH.
First thing first:
both pedals are excellent. I would be very surprised if, tonally, one found one drastically better than the other. There are subtle differences but the feel, dynamics and tone are first class for both.
The size is roughly the same and the quality of the construction is comparable. Both pedals take overdrive/distortion pedals very well. They have the necessary headroom and they don’t compromise the tone.
Let’s get another thing out of the way. Personally,
I didn’t feel any difference in the response. I couldn’t perceive any latency and with DLX I didn’t feel any special “direct connection” because of the zero latency. They both feel very responsive and dynamic.
UAFX Dream ’65
As far I can tell, the D65 is a completely digital pedal. I tested the D65 without connection to the app via Bluetooth. The unit was exactly like it came out of the factory. There are two reasons for that: first, I don’t like the idea of giving my email to a company in order to update my pedals. Second, I wasn’t sure I was going to keep the unit so I didn’t want to do anything that could impact the return.
The unit is heavy and gives the impression of being very solid. If one wanted to be difficult, the knobs could have been in metal instead of plastic but it’s definitely not a deal breaker.
The D65 requires a 9V, 400mA, isolated power supply.
You cannot daisy chain the power supply of the D65 with other units. I haven’t tried to but I fear it may produce unwanted noises if connected to other pedals in daisy chain.
The D65 is a full stereo unit. It can be used with stereo-in/stereo-out, mono-in/mono-out, mono-in/stereo-out. Unfortunately, the outputs are unbalanced. If you want to connect the D65 to a PA, you need a DI box.
Personally, I found the lack of balanced outputs disappointing for an amp simulator that places itself on the market as one of the best units of its type. The D65 core functionality is that it reproduces a Fender amp. I didn’t have a Fender Amp that I could use for a direct A/B comparison but, based on my memory, it sounded very Fender-y. It’s dynamic, it breaks very nicely and the spring reverb sounds like a good sounding spring reverb.
The 2 band tone control works well but I didn’t feel the need of turning the knobs past 10 or 2 o’clock. The pedal sounded good without any EQ adjustment.
The D65 has also an integrated vibrato effect. It is not the type of effect I tend to use but it sounds very nice.
Not unexpectedly, it is not a high-gain pedal. Having said that, with the gain and boost controls it is possible to get very good crunchy tones. For more distortion, I recommend an external pedal.
In a way, the D65 is a little bit of one-trick pony (but in the best possible way). If you look for a pedal that behaves like Fender amp, sounds like a Fender amp and has (more or less) the controls of a Fender amp, look no further. The D65 nails it.
As amp replacement, I tend to see it conceptually separated by the pedalboard. Like one would see an amp separated by the pedalboard. I see it as “set it and leave it” type of unit. The D65 has a preset footswitch and a bypass footswitch but I don’t see myself using them that much.
Accordingly to the manual, the footswitches configuration can be changed but, as far as I can see, one configuration is missing: preset, boost and long-press on the preset footswitch to bypass the unit. For people using the same pedalboard for electric and acoustic guitars, it would really help.
If you believe some of the hype and you expect to the D65 to be the pedal that changes your life, there is the concrete risk that you are will be disappointed. It’s a very good pedal but it’s not a unit that comes from another dimension.
In a nutshell, if you need a pedal with a great tone that replaces a Fender amp but you if don’t need a super-flexible, programmable/MIDI pedal, the D65 is an excellent choice.
Pros
- Good tone, dynamic and clarity.
- Compact.
- Full stereo in/out.
- USB-C.
Cons
- No balanced outputs.
- The footswitches configurability could be better.
- Isolated power supply.
DSM Humboldt Simplifier DLX
Apart from the reverb, the D65 is a completely analogue. If you absolutely need a full analogue unit, you just have to turn down the reverb knobs to zero or use the external switching unit to switch off the reverb.
In many ways the DLX is the opposite of the D65. It has a more controls than a spaceship and it is probably the most flexible pedal of this type that I ever tried. I don’t know where the name comes from but the DLX is not a simple unit. For what it does, it’s not that complicated though.
If you need to know more about the internal signal paths of the DLX I recommend you download the manual. It contains a nice diagram that shows how the unit works. The DLX is a routing monster. Don’t even think about adventuring the jungle of the possible routing options without a map.
The DLX the preamp sections have 3 band tone controls but honestly, I never felt the need of using them. The various settings I tried sounded great without any tweaking on the EQ but the option is there if one needs further tone shaping.
I could easily write a few pages post only about routing and the various sections. I’ll address only a few elements that I didn’t find anywhere on the web.
- There are a few toggle switches that change the way the internal routing operates. They give the DLX a huge amount of flexibility and the manual explains how they operate. In practical terms, once you select your favourite settings, I doubt you will touch them anymore.
- Two further toggle switches can be used to bypass the sim section (cabsim + power amp sim) for two output jacks. The sim section is always active for the XLR and headphones outputs. Two other toggle switches can be used to bypass the preamp sections.
- Leaving aside the bypass, reverb and sim section are directly connected to the outputs. In other words, reverb and sim sections are functionalities of the outputs not of the preamplifiers’ channels.
Given the above, there are three main configurations the majority of guitarists are likely to use (there are others but they are a more unusual):
- Stereo/mono. I suspect this is the configuration the majority of people use. Guitar in (mono), two preamp channels (e.g. clean and distorted) and stereo reverb. You probably want to keep exactly the same settings for reverb and sim section settings for both channels – unless of course you want two different sounds for the two outputs. For example, if you send one out to the mixing desk via the XLR out and one of the jack outs to the return of an amp.
- Dual-mono. This is the configuration you probably want to use with a processor with stereo send/return. The DLX becomes an external processing unit of the main processor. Preamp channel A is sent to sim section A and output A. Preamp channel B is sent to the sim section B and output B. The external switching unit is not used. The main processing unit controls the active channel.
- Stereo/mono with external effects. This a is configuration that consists in one or more pedals connected to the send/return of the DLX. DLX is the central hub of the pedalboard.
Ok, but what if one wants to use the pedal in mono without other pedals? Single guitar input, switching between two channels (clan and distorted) and separate cabinet settings for the two channels and signal sent to a single flat response speaker with just one input. You cannot do it directly. The sim sections are connected to outputs. If use only one output, there is no way to switch sim section. It is not as bad as it sounds though. The “mono/stereo” configuration described above works pretty well but you can’t have two separate cab settings. If you absolutely have to switch cabsim when you switch preamp channel, the only way I found is with an external switching unit (e.g. a HX Stomp).
If you think that DLX is too complicated for you, I can assure you that things are not as complex as they sound. The manual shows a few configurations with the toggle switches settings and once you set the unit you probably don’t need to change the settings anymore.
This is especially true if you plan to use the same cabsim settings for both preamp channels. In this way, you can go in stereo or mono simply plugging two or one cable on the outs.
The DLX sounds great. I had it on my desk next to the D65 and with progressive adjustments, I managed to reproduce the D65 sounds pretty accurately. The difference is that the DLX can go far beyond one family of sounds. It can sound like a Fender, a Marshall and anything in between. The cabsim can be fine-tuned to cover a wide range of sounds. If you have other units, the send/return connections with the routing configurations offer a huge amount of possibility.
Pros
- Good tone, dynamic and clarity.
- Compact.
- Full stereo in/out.
- Huge number of options for signal routing.
- Power supply can be daisy-chained.
- Unbalanced and XLR outputs.
- Immediate user interface (no menus or connections to computers)
Cons
- The complexity of the unit can be discouraging for some people.
- The XLR outs are not completely phantom power tolerant (phantom power does not damage the unit but the sound quality is compromised)
Conclusions
Both units are very good. They both sound excellent and they are likely to make happy any guitarist who looks for an amp/cab replacement.
The D65 is perfect if you need to replace a Fender amp with a pedal and you don’t like complicated units. Plug it in, turn a couple of knobs are you are ready to go with a pedal that sounds great.
The DLX is very good sounding unit with tons of options and sounds. It can sound like a Fender amp (for cleans, I found that the “crunch” amp with the gain to almost zero works better than the “clean” setting) but it can sound like distorted Marshall and being convincing in both impersonations.
The D65 and the DLX units gave me two different impressions. If I had to go with a very wild speculation (that is almost certainly completely untrue), the D65 looks to me like a pedal designed by a corporation where marketing and management have a significant weight on the decisions. The DLX gives me the impression of a unit designed by a couple of engineers who play guitar and that have in their mind what they need every time they connect a unit to a pedalboard. This doesn’t make the D65 better or worse than the DLX but it might explain the different “vibe” of the two units.
Which one do I use? I wish I had the money to keep both but, apart from the spring reverb, there is nothing that the D65 can do that I can’t achieve almost exactly with the DLX.

Everything above is just my personal opinion and I do not claim it is a statement of facts. I have not been remunerated by UA, DSM Humboldt or any of their associates (e.g. distributors or resellers). submitted by
