2023.05.30 14:02 cantheevilman Is it just me, or are there a LOT of similarities between Sibyl at the end of S1 and the current mode of operation of the Chinese Communist Party.

Just finished up Season 1 (Really F****** Good), and I kept thinking back on how the current system within China and the Sibyl system are quite similar. Among the similarities I noticed: 1) Extensive usage of tracking and facial recognition. https://www.npr.org/2021/01/05/953515627/facial-recognition-and-beyond-journalist-ventures-inside-chinas-surveillance-sta 2) Usage of predictive policing https://www.reddit.com/Psychopass/comments/e1tgq6/sybil_system_irl_chinese_government_uses_machine/ 3) Usage of large data systems to track human behavior and quantify said behavior in a number that determines how "ideal" someone is for the system (the social credit score). This "score" acts as an attempt for everyone to operate under the assumption that everyone is inherently trustworthy, as the cymatic scans and psycho-pass score security systems does within the Psycho-Pass world. https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/11/22/1063605/china-announced-a-new-social-credit-law-what-does-it-mean/ 4) Governing "system" is almost everywhere and is embedded within most forms of communication and devices used in society. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/21/world/asia/china-surveillance-investigation.html 5) Lower level jobs within system determined by extremely meritocratic system (Gaokao) https://www.voxchina.org/show-3-243.html 6) The way the system internally functions is largely guided by a small network of individuals. https://multimedia.scmp.com/widgets/china/cpc-prime
I'm still trying to think through Psycho-Pass from a philosophical perspective, but that REALLY stuck out to me given that I follow geopolitical stuff closely. Did anyone else notice stuff similar, or am I just a bit nuts here? (please don't spoil me past S1)

2023.05.30 13:33 London-Roma-1980 NON-CONFERENCE MATCHDAY 11 PREVIEW

In Week 4, it becomes more important than ever for the mid-majors to strike while the iron is hot. We saw it in Matchday 10 as Detroit Mercy upended Oklahoma. Now, another early success story of the mid-majors takes a shot at a big name. This one is a true battle of David and Goliath, though.
*****
#17 DePaul Blue Demons vs. Rhode Island Rams.
It's a team that thrives in the middle taking on a team that lives for full-court. A pair of giants underneath who so far have led their team. The bigs of the Big East taking on the roadrunners of the Atlantic 10.
But Rams coach Frank Keaney is under no delusion that it'll be an even fight.
"We've had our chances to make a mark this season," Keaney said. "I hope this one pays off. We do really well against the outside teams, but the big boys are the ones we've struggled with."
Indeed, while both teams are 7-3, that's highly deceiving. DePaul has beaten West Virginia, Auburn, and Colorado, getting three victories over the Power Six schools. Rhode Island, meanwhile, is 0-2 -- and the games against Minnesota and NC State weren't that close.
Still, Blue Demons coach Ray Meyer isn't taking the Rams lightly. "If they can get in a groove, they can compete with anyone. We've seen them beat teams by 70 points this season [Rhode Island beat Fairleigh Dickinson 125-54], and they beat a team with a dominant big like us [knocking off Jacksonville in overtime]. We're going to have to be on our best to win. But I think there's a gameplan, and I hope we execute it."

Hanging up the ol' Yaesu map
I'm redoing my shack and came across the map that came with my FT991A a couple years ago. What's the best way for hanging one of these things up? Just use a frame meant for posters? Or a cork board backing that pins can be put into to mark contacts? Just curious what others have done.

2023.05.30 13:03 jasons0219 Random Xerath rework idea

Xerath (and a lot of poke mages) has been in a terrible spot ever since the durability update. Damage seems to have crawled back up except for poke mages making them even worse.
Hitting skillshots doesn't feel rewarding anymore because of lack of damage, hitting skillshots have become harder because mobility creep, weaknesses for being a poke mage still exists (shit CSing, low mobility and survivability, mana). They are becoming worse and worse. You used to be able to carry games at 6 items, but now not so much.
However, the majority of league playerbase hates poke mages and would hate on the idea of a number rebalance, which would still leave mages with outdated kits in modern league.
So I had two shower thought rework ideas

1

Xerath damage does sizeable damage upfront, but the damage is partly healed(50%?) if not "finalized" via reaching 0 in enemy hp or some skillshot condition. His R could activate anytime Xerath hits a skillshot on a champion(with a cd ofc) and gets one or two shots to finalize the damage. Something like a reverse Pyke.
So a skillful Xerath needs to be able to hit successive shillshots and finalize it to be rewarded instead of simply fishing for something to hit with no backlash(which doesn't hold as true anymore compated to earlier seasons).

2

Every skillshot gives a stack to Xerath. The stack increases the next skillshot's magicpen by some percentage. The stack persists until Xerath fails to hit a champion. So if enemy jungle Xin gets hit by Q and then the enemy Fizz is hit by the next W, Xerath will have two stacks. If Xerath whiffs his first R, the stack goes to zero.
This will also reward consistant accuracy.

2023.05.30 13:00 xezene The 'Saga Journal' Archive A complete archive of the Star Wars fandom's landmark first fan-run online academic journal (2004-2010)

Hello, everyone. The following archive is my attempt to collect the incredible work of Saga Journal, the first online academic journal created by fans to illuminate and analyze the six films of the Star Wars saga in greater depth. It really was something incredible, and reading it again now, it still is. As such, I've decided to share it here, and hopefully preserve it on the internet for all to see once more.
Created in late 2004, Saga Journal consistently published academic essays over the course of the next 4 years, and then one final time, coming to a close in 2010. Drawing on works of literature, psychoanalysis, history, and comparative media, Saga Journal featured essays written by fans with a keen eye for the layers within the films, while keeping to a submission standard of quality and style, as each essay contained a bibliography of works cited. From historical analogues to Jungian analysis, the essays often offer worthwhile insights and observations, with pieces of brilliance appearing with some regularity. The incredible efforts put into creating and maintaining this journal, as well as the essays themselves, deserve to be preserved on the internet and read.
I encourage everyone to peruse the essays at your interest, and even to share or repost essays that bring you insight, here and elsewhere. I myself discovered Saga Journal through reading one fantastic essay (The Perils of Padmé by lazypadawan) and was richly rewarded by checking out the rest Saga Journal had to offer. The impressive effort of the journal was the combined work of men and women, but it should be noted it was largely the initiative of women within the Star Wars fandom to make Saga Journal a reality. In the course of Star Wars history, such a detail is worth highlighting, as the films have always resonated with a variety of audiences who themselves had much to contribute back to the saga. Without further ado, enjoy reading!

2023.05.30 12:43 DroneTheDruid970 Does it get any easier?

26m,
In 2019, I lost my Dad to multiple myeloma (cancer of the plasma cells in his bone marrow). 6 months before that, we lost my paternal grandpa to lung cancer, and not even a month after my Dad passed, we lost my maternal grandpa to suicide.
It feels weird knowing they were a part of my life. Having only memories to remember them. I find it hard to believe they were actually even here sometimes. It's been so long already. The world kept moving forward as I did. How can 22 years of life with my Dad not feel real while 4 years without him makes more sense? I don't think I processed these passings well. I acknowledge they're no longer here, but the past just doesn't seem real anymore. Maybe I'm still in denial. Idk. I know it'll never be as it was. It's impossible, but does this truly get easier?
They all have missed so much. My sister got married, she has 2 boys now too. Hell, even I got married (I was voted least likely to settle down amongst my family). There are no kids for me right now, though. My step sister is about to graduate this summer, and his granddaughter is growing up so fast. She was really young when he passed.
Everything was kind of hell with my step mom after dad passed. She wouldn't give up some of his possessions, specifically his drum kit, which rightfully would've gone to me being the only other drummer in the family. But Dad never wrote a will. I digress. Things were not great after that. It was just fuel to the flames.
I didn't get to say goodbye because there was no room for me to stay at the hospital, which was an hour away. I told her to call me if anything happens the second it happens. I got the call about an hour after he passed...they said he began passing around 6am. He was pronounced dead at 10am. I've always held on to that. Not being there. I should've just slept in the fucking hallway. Idk. I just hope this gets easier. I miss him. I miss them all and wish there was a way to relive these memories.
Sorry for the rant at the end. Thanks for reading.

2023.05.30 12:21 dondonbow The PvP in this game is fucking awesome

Don't get me wrong, I'm not being ironic.
You have to admit POGO's PVP design philosophy is one of a kind. Neither a TBS nor RTS game but at the same time it carries a bit of both. The best thing I enjoy about it is that both players have to put their full intention and focus hard in order to win. This isn't a second window/tab game where you can play while watching Netflix.
Roping is almost ubiquitous in modern mobile pvp games, but in POGO, even the most saltiest player don't rope at the beginning of every match becuz that just guarantees their loss, while as in other games such as HS or MTG there's a chance for impatient opponents to just concede and grant salty players the win.
Now back to the game itself. Yes, it looks like brainless button mashing made for toddlers at first glance. But once you get serious it's actually complex enough that many dedicated players spent a great time honing their skills and studying the meta. If it's sheer luck then how come top players can always hit legend? You can take the easy route to just always whine that it's just RPS, but then you'll never git gud.
Also in tournaments it's show 6 pick 3, so the lineup is definitely not RNG. You have to predict opponent's pick which involves a lot of thinking before the game even starts.
Yes, most mons are just spice picks, but when was the last time you ever played a game with so many characters to pick in the roster? And it's not uncommon for seasoned players to use spice teams to reck noobs using top meta teams. Copy pasting whatever suggested top meta builds sure can make your game easier, but at the end of the day, if you just treat GBL as skilless button mashing game then I'm sure you won't reach too far.

5/30 Tuesday MLB Minnesota Twins vs Houston Astros Betting Preview
In this Tuesday night matchup, the Minnesota Twins will take on the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park. Both teams have been performing well this season, making this an intriguing game to watch and bet on. Let's analyze the statistics and trends to determine the potential outcomes of the game.
ATS and OU Records and Trends: The Minnesota Twins currently hold a 28-26 overall record and have a slight negative ATS record of -$341.00. They have gone 5-5 against left-handed pitchers and 23-21 against right-handed pitchers. On the other hand, the Houston Astros boast a 31-22 overall record and have a positive ATS record of $36.00. They have performed well against both left-handed pitchers (9-5) and right-handed pitchers (22-17).
When it comes to the total, the Twins have seen the game go under in 6 of their last 9 outings, while the Astros have experienced a push, with the total going over and under 26-26-1 times this season.
Betting Odds Trends: The Astros have been in excellent form lately, winning 11 of their last 14 games. They have also been dominant at home, winning 6 of their last 7 games. Furthermore, Houston has had success when playing against the Twins, going 8-2 ATS in their last 10 meetings and 7-3 SU in their last 10 matchups.
On the other hand, the Twins have struggled on the road, winning only 3 of their last 9 games away from home. They have also had difficulty against the Astros, with a 2-8 ATS record in their last 10 meetings and a 3-7 SU record in their last 10 matchups.
Pitching Matchup: For the Twins, Joe Ryan will take the mound. In his last three starts, he has displayed impressive form, earning a 2.21 ERA and recording a 2-1 record. Ryan's recent success and his previous victory against the Astros on April 8, 2023, suggest he could pose a challenge to Houston's offense.
The Astros will counter with Brandon Bielak, who has a 1-2 record and a 3.55 ERA in his last three starts. Although he hasn't faced the Twins recently, Bielak's solid performance against other opponents indicates he can hold his ground.
Prediction: Considering the recent trends and performances of both teams, the Astros appear to have the upper hand. Their strong form, especially at home, gives them an edge against the struggling Twins on the road. Furthermore, Houston has historically performed well against Minnesota.
The final score prediction for this game is a 6-3 victory for the Houston Astros. They are likely to cover the run line, and the total is expected to go over.

2023.05.30 11:59 Fit-Comfortable-6031 List Of Cryptocurrencies Scams to Avoid Before Investing.

List Of Cryptocurrencies Scams to Avoid Before Investing
If you’re looking to invest in cryptocurrencies, you need to know the scams and what not to do. In this post, I’m going to show you a list of some red flags that will help keep your money safe and sound.
List Of Cryptocurrencies Scams to Avoid Before Investing My Name is Wayne and I’ve been investing in cryptos for over 5 years now. It’s important that before we dive into the meat of this video, we understand how it can be very confusing sometimes when trying to figure out which coins are good investments or just outright scams. So let me walk through all these different points with you so that by the end of this video, you’ll have an idea of how crypto trading works without getting scammed! Investing in cryptocurrencies is a risky business.
It’s terrifying to think how many people have lost their life savings because of these scams-please don’t let it happen to you! We’ve compiled a list of the most common cryptocurrency scams so that you can avoid them before investing in anything. You should never trust a shady-looking website with a .com address, and always make sure you do your research on any coin before you put your money into it. These are just some of the things we’ll be talking about in this blog post. Hi, The Crypto Cell is an education organization that helps newcomers learn about cryptocurrency investing so they can invest and trade responsibly and safely with our expert advice on diversifying your portfolio, buying low, selling high, and avoiding scams.
  1. Fake ICOs that are set up to steal your money. You can’t always be sure that an online cryptocurrency wallet is safe. A recent study found out that there are many fake ICOs in the crypto space which will take your money and run with it! For example, hackers managed to steal about $80 million dollars from users back in 2017 through one such phishing scam — “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2017). So if you’re looking into investing some funds make sure they come recommended by reputable sources or have a strong security system like two-factor authentication enabled so this doesn’t happen again…
  2. Non-existent exchanges or wallets where you can buy cryptocurrencies. Cryptocurrencies are not yet established enough to have their own exchanges. If you want to buy some digital coins, your best bet is usually going through an existing one like Coinbase or Kraken which will allow beginners, as well as seasoned traders alike, access with the ease-of-use features that make navigating the market easier than ever before!
  3. Websites that offer fake cryptocurrency giveaways in exchange for personal information, such as a phone number and email address Websites that offer fake cryptocurrency giveaways in exchange for personal information, such as a phone number and email address are nothing new. They popped up all over social media earlier this year when more people than ever before began investing their money into cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum. Websites promising free coins often ask users to provide sensitive data including bank account numbers which can result in identity theft if submitted without care.
  4. Stay away from any cryptocurrency that is not on a major exchange. Stay away from any cryptocurrency that does not have a major exchange such as Binance or Coinbase The safest way to invest in cryptocurrencies is by purchasing them on an established platform. These exchanges offer insurance policies and security measures so your funds are protected against hacks, bots, malware attacks, etc., which may affect other platforms like Local Bitcoins where you buy gold with bitcoin.
  5. Avoid cryptocurrencies with only whitepapers and no code. To be a successful cryptocurrency, you need to know that there are some things in this world that cannot be trusted. The first thing is the developers of your favorite coins and tokens — they might just disappear with all their money! Be sure not only do they have an idea but also code behind it so no one can steal away what belongs to yours or take advantage when something goes wrong (just ask anyone who invested in Bitcoin). So next time someone tries selling you on an Altcoin without any info available other than whitepapers, please remember this cryptocurrency scams list and make the right decision for yourself!
  6. Be careful of shady exchanges or trading platforms. There are many exchanges and trading platforms out there that can be dangerous to your coins. Make sure you only trade on established websites with transparency into their system, otherwise it might end up being a losing battle for them in the long run!
  7. Check the team behind the coin, their experience, and how transparent they are about their project. There’s no better way to invest in cryptocurrency than by checking out the team behind it. If you want a safe haven for your money that will be sure to have value 10 years from now, then coins with experienced teams are worth looking at! Cryptocurrencies are in a state of constant flux, and new scams pop up constantly. It can be difficult to know what is real and what isn’t when it comes to this emerging technology. The best thing you can do for yourself before investing is read everything you can on the subject, research every coin thoroughly, and only invest in currencies that have been around for at least one year with a solid market cap — these will likely not disappear overnight like most cryptocurrencies.
