2023.05.30 12:30 Dangerous_Bat4259 Dating is fucked forever for every single generation

Most boomers are widows. Most of our parents are single or divorced. Millennials and Gen Z aren’t really getting married and having children. Hook up culture and porn fried a lot of people’s brains. The US economy is a flaming pile of dogshit. COVID. The unemployment crisis. The opioid crisis. Bank failures. Mass degeneracy. LGBTQ. Promotion of satan and satanist values. Infanticide (child sacrifice). The death of masculinity and the abandonment of men due to feminism and misandry. Wars for profit. Wage slavery. Stagnant wages. Predatory social media and big tech. Only Fans. AI porn. Depression. Anxiety. All of these are indicators of a failed society.

2023.05.30 12:27 TheMilliner All this negativity, but can we take a moment to appreciate how good the new mission is?

Like, actually, I think it might be my favourite mission hands down.
Throneside already looked great, but god damn does Archivum look good. Huge, impossibly large Administratum archives filled with yellow glows of chandeliers and flames, the panic-inducing, almost overstimulating alarm lights in the ventilation sections and the almost sickly, sterile white in the final event room, all while blaring to great new Jesper Kyd tracks.
The events are great. The mad dash through the ventilation areas feel frenzied and dangerous, enemies spawning from both sides, doors closing in your face... It's surprisingly difficult if you don't have a fast way of clearing large groups of chaff mixed in with the frequently spawning elites and heavies. Running a few times without a flamer or purgatus was rough without a cohesive fireteam even with the breaks to pull the levers to open the next section.
Then the last event, less frantic but still oddly difficult despite the openness of the ring layout. I think something about the way it lets enemy spawns loop in on more split-up and mobile groups that spread out to do the scans works great in creating a satisfyingly difficult final event.
Sure, more cohesive teams with communication aren't likely to struggle too hard, but I'm actually really enjoying this new mission. It looks gorgeous, it plays great, it has a wide variety of environments that let different builds shine, from the tight corridors in the first event to the more wide and multi-levelled areas in the Archive proper and the staircase room and has a killer track to go with it. All in all, a really solid map.

2023.05.30 12:26 CantPlayNieR Ideas for a magic system based around Salt

Hello! I'm attempting to outline a magic system for a low fantasy lovecraftian-esque pirate novel I plan to eventually write. TL;DR at the end.
I was toying around, trying to come up with an unique magic system that’s pirate ‘themed’. Thought about water manipulation, but I’m not really into writing elemental magic systems (while I enjoy reading them, I’m not creative enough to write them). At some point I just thought: “There’s plenty of salt in the sea! (And other places).”
There are two major races in this word: The people of the Blue Prince and the People of the Red Maiden.
The People of the Red Maiden are merfolk. Sirens, Mermaids, Selkies, Kelpies, Cetaceans and all kind of aquatic creatures. Their blood is Red (original, yes — I’m still developing the idea lol). They worship the Red Star (eldritch god)
The People of the Blue Prince are landwellers. I’m still deciding if they’re all humans or made up of different humanoid races. Their blood is blue. They worship the Blue Sea (another eldritch god).
The Idea isn’t super developed yet (because I’m currently working on another major WIP, but I’m fleshing out a little bit of it so I don’t end up forgetting it before I start writing) so I don’t have much on it yet. The bones I have so far are the follow:
The Red and The Blue were worshiped as twin gods; wayyyyy back then, when the humans and the merfolk were at peace (ish — they weren’t exactly allies, but weren’t on open war either). Now, as Merfolk and Humans became enemies, so did the Red and the Blue.
It all started when a proud prince shouted at the Blue that no creature could best him. The Blue, quite itched at his challenge, did find it fit to scratch by sending at the prince great monsters for him to meet his match. But no beast of Gods could cow this man, (or so his crewmen thought), and fuming, the Sea could only turn away, scoff and command he rot. The Prince did then celebrate his victory against the Blue, and drove his ship through all the dangerous waters in his view. Thus the Blue sent the maiden of Red, who enthralled the sailors so they wouldn’t beg. She feasted on them as they drowned — until one remained: the Blue Prince. She spared him, leaving him stranded on her isles. It was his punishment for killing the Blue’s creatures. All the while the Red laughed at the prince’s curse. And so the Prince resolved that day to slay this siren and claim her Song, once her power to drive men mad was dead and gone. But the Maiden was as alone as the Prince. And, after eons of eachother’s company, they grew up to forgive and to love, even. The maiden doted sweetly and showed him her secret ways, to both breathe underwater and to live for many days. In such a long extended stay, the Prince did realize, that in all his freedom, he never felt alive. The Maiden trusted him and so told him of how her voice did go, and how to counteract it when she sang her song of doom. And as the words left her mouth, the Prince leapt through the room and drove his saber through her heart. The prince felt no real relief, his love was dead, and he was now alone. He tried to drown, but he could no longer, so he screamed instead. His sword hacked away at his foul flesh, all the while the Blue and the Red laughed, speaking to him of the maiden. But of the prince’s scream the Blue did tire, calling the Red a foul and a liar. In a fit of scheme weaved the Blue the tale of Prince and Maiden anew.
The Prince’s flesh had long turned to salt — and with salt the Blue made men from default. Thus came to be the first new human.
The Red Star hissed at Blue’s treason, and from the ocean’s blood, the Red made the merfolk — all of which hated humans; but one hated them more: the Siren with the Maiden’s blood.
TL;DR: humans were made from salt, so salt has ‘magical’ properties. Any suggestions as to what which kind of salt could do? Any ideas on different types of salt?
I also have no idea regarding the merfolk’s magic system. (Maybe pepper? Lol)

2023.05.30 12:08 apolloxer The Immune System, and 40k.

It is 2017 2023. For more than a hundred seconds The Human has sat immobile on the Golden Throne taking a dump. He is the master of a trillion cells by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with biochemical power digested from his last meal. He is the Carrion Lord of the Toilet for whom a hundred billion cells are sacrificed every day, so that he may shitpost on Reddit.
Yet even in his deathless state, the Human's Cells continues their eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets navigate the maddening torrent of the Arteries, the only route between distant organs, their way powered by the Heart, the physical manifestation of the Human Lifeforce. Vast armies wage war in his name on uncounted battlefields. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the White Blood Cells, the Macrophages, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Neutrophils and countless Platelet defence forces, the ever vigilant Dendritic Cells and the Lymphocytes of the Adaptive Immune System to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat of the virus, the bacteria, the parasite - and worse.
To be a cell in such times is to be one amongst untold trillions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the promise of individuality and freedom, for in the grim dark present there is only multicellularity and apoptosis. There is no peace amongst the flesh, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

2023.05.30 11:59 Expensive_Split_9155 God of War 2005 PS5 Remake - ChatGPT

Remaking the original God of War game from 2005 on the PlayStation 5 would be an exciting project for fans of the franchise. While I'm an AI language model and cannot directly create games, I can provide you with some insights on what a potential remake could entail.
  1. Graphical Enhancements: The original God of War game was released on the PlayStation 2, so a remake for the PS5 would involve significant graphical improvements. The game's environments, characters, and effects could be updated to take advantage of the advanced hardware capabilities of the PS5, including ray tracing, higher resolution textures, improved lighting, and realistic animations.
  2. Gameplay Improvements: The core gameplay mechanics could be refined and modernized to align with the more recent entries in the God of War series. Combat systems could be expanded and enhanced, offering a more fluid and dynamic experience. The addition of new abilities, weapons, and combos could further enrich the gameplay.
  3. Audio and Sound Design: Remaking God of War on the PS5 would present an opportunity to re-record and enhance the game's audio and sound effects. The immersive audio capabilities of the PS5, such as 3D audio, could be utilized to provide a more atmospheric and realistic experience.
  4. User Interface and Quality of Life Enhancements: The user interface could be redesigned to make it more intuitive and visually appealing. Quality of life improvements could be made to features like inventory management, menu navigation, and save systems, taking advantage of the PS5's fast loading times and powerful SSD.
  5. Additional Content: While it's important to retain the essence of the original game, a remake could potentially include additional content to expand upon the story or provide new gameplay experiences. This could include new areas to explore, boss battles, side quests, or even new game modes.
It's worth noting that Sony Santa Monica, the studio behind the recent God of War (2018), might have different plans for the franchise, and the decision to remake the original game rests with them. However, the possibilities presented here could serve as inspiration for what a God of War 2005 remake on the PS5 could look like.

2023.05.30 11:27 Chinkcyclops How machines should be harnessed

Aloy should definitely have given everyone the ability to harness machines instead of selfishly keeping it to herself.
Machines are super useful to the civilisations in Horizon. The Utaru is the best example this. Their land gods are able to give the Utaru plentiful harvest. If every civilisation are able to tame machines, they get immense boosts:
Broadhead, Chargers, Striders are all great pack animals. They can pull carts and people can ride on them, and they only require grass to operate. Basically they are horses, but they will not tire, much more durable and require less maintence.
Grazer and Lancehorns can be used to produce blaze, which is useful for mining.
Rockbreakers are great for tunneling
Clamberjaw, scrapper and glinthawks are great for scrapping old ruins and other machines, providing the civilisations high quality ingredients that they cannot produce themselves like tempered steel.
Sunwing and Waterwings provide energy cells, which can be very useful to usher in an industrial revolution and skip all the polluting parts of it.
Tallnecks are super useful, if Aloy can somehow understand how Tallnecks communicates with the machines, people can use it to communicate over large distances using only scrapped machine parts.
With the ability to tame machines, every single civilisation will benefit. Machines can enhance trade, allow for instant communications over large distances, and allow humans to access technologies previously out of their reach and lead them to develop much more modern technologies.
The obvious problem of the use of machines is that the control of machines gives a huge advantage in war. But the knowledge of machine taming is not really exclusive to Aloy anymore, since the Sons of Promethus have the knowledge. While the organisation is likely disbanded, some of the followers will still be alive, and their knowledge would tip any battle to their favor. By giving all civilisations the means to convert machines, Aloy will eliminate the one-sidednedd of machines in war. Aloy can also choose to withold the knowledge of overriding combat machines to help keep the peace.

2023.05.30 11:22 OmegaTitanZ My Guild Wars Journey and Appreciation post (and miniguide to those wanting

Hello everyone, today I have finished the goal I had originally had set out for myself when I had started this game: GWAMM and 50/50 HoM and wanted to reflect my journey throughout my time and appreciation for this game with this post. Ill also be pointing out things I had wish I had known to those looking for their GWAMM and HoM as well.

Background on me as a player, I am a Guild Wars 2 player that started back in December 2017 and wanted to find a mmo that I wanted to enjoy since I grew up playing Runescape and wanted a change. This led me into starting GW2, learning about the world of Tyria, exploring content and fell in love with it immediately. Fast forward four years and I have become well versed in all of GW2 content and was playing on and off and told myself, why not try the original Guild Wars while I was waiting for the EoD expansion to come out?
I had already set myself that I would try out the game and I happen to remember the exact moment which lead me to want to play Guild Wars; Ingame I happened to stumble across a player with a title that I wanted for myself: God Walking Amongst Mere Mortals. A quick wiki search told me I had to achieve that title in GW1 to obtain it in GW2. Coupled with the fact that I was a lore nerd for all things Tyria, I had to see what Guild Wars 1 was all about.
Cue in when I ended up buying this game, I was excited after I had purchased the complete edition, wiki searching up the fastest way to get GWAMM while the game was downloading and searching up video guides on youtube, when I stumbled upon Peter Kadar's GWAMM and Elementalist guide videos. Yeah I was the kind of player that likes to read guides and minmax everything, and this game was no exception. Despite wanting to get GWAMM as quickly as possible, I also wanted to play to enjoy the story content in a linear fashion so I decided to make a roleplaying Prophecies character. I also chose Elementalist as my class (even though I had read that Mesmers were top tier DPS Classes), since I had picked elementalist as my first class in GW2 as well. Thankfully the name that I used for my GW2 Character was not taken, and with that my journey finally begins.
I remember my first impressions of the game: though admittedly it has good graphics for its time that aged like fine wine and had grown on me, my original assessment of the "bad" graphics; the lack of jumping and third dimension as well as the static combat compared to the dynamically fluid combat system of GW2 admittedly did throw me off slightly. Despite this I had set myself to start prophecies as well to grind out the Legendary Defender of Ascalon (LDoA) title as well to make my GWAMM easier. Hours later after grinding out all quests, Charr and Farmer Hamnet, as well as ticking my pre-searing checklist before I leave, I step out to post-Searing, not knowing that many hours in the future I would be super glad that I got the title before leaving. (1/30)
My subsequent journey became like this:

Boy was I so happy when I finally achieved that title. I had clocked around 320~ ish hours to get GWAMM over the span of around 6 months (minus the time I took a break for EoD) which I was pretty happy about considering it was my first playthrough. At some point though, the magic of the game clicked. Instead of logging on to the game just to get some rewards for GW2 and to reach my goals, I started to log in because I genuinely enjoyed the game. I thought why not? I'll fill up my HoM as well just to keep playing.

All I can say after this journey is that GW is such an amazing game and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with it as well as the friends I made along the way. In the end I have nothing but praise for this game and now I can see why there are so many diehard GW fans who would defend this game. Although as a GW2 player and from a GW2 standpoint I have no reason to continue playing the game, I can forsee myself still coming back every now and then playing this game for the same reason I play Guild Wars 2; in the end it was all for fun and the memories and the incredible journey I had.
Thank you all if you have read this far :)

2023.05.30 11:18 harryjake83 Update: NR200P Max 4080/13600K Temps

Hey everyone!
Thought I'd post a quick update since my last post detailing the outcomes of a few adjustments I've made over the last two days.
Overall I'm thrilled at the progress I've been able to make reducing internal temperatures, and I've had so much fun researching and tweaking various build configurations!
The adjustments I made were relatively simple, but I wanted to detail my findings in case other are considering similar changes!
Basic Build Details
Fans
I swapped out the stock SickleFlow AIO fans for Noctua NF-A14s, and although these did not make much of a noticeable difference to internal temps (at least without tweaking fan curves), they definitely run quieter (and have alleviated the low ticking noise I used to get at higher RPMs on the stock fans).
I also set three custom fan curves using FanControl:
Contact Frame
I also swapped out the stock ILM for a Thermalright contact frame, which immediately improved my CPU temps. Just prior to installing the contact frame, my 13600K peaked out at a package temp of 99 after 10mins of Cinebench R23.
I let the system cool down a bit, installed the contact frame, and ran the same test again - and this time the CPU package temp peaked at 90 after 10mins, which I was very happy with.
This was probably single biggest change I was able to make to internal temperatures.
Airflow
I also experimented with top intake/bottom exhaust, double exhaust, and top exhaust/bottom intake.
I found that the top exhaust/bottom intake configuration was the best for GPU temps when using the tempered glass panel, and the increase in CPU temps was minimal compared to the double exhaust configuration.
This configuration paired with my custom fan curves dropped my average GPU temps under gaming load around 5-8 degrees compared to the double exhaust configuration, depending on the game.
Top intake/bottom exhaust yielded worse temps for both the CPU and the GPU compared to the top exhaust/bottom intake configuration.
Cable Management
I spent a while tightening up the cables around the motherboard/PSU and behind the GPU, which (anecdotally, admittedly) seems to have made around a 2-3 degree impact to my GPU temps.
Although this may be somewhat of a placebo effect, I'm thinking there was a chance that my previous mess of cables may have obstructed airflow inside the case, and tidying this up has allowed me to cool down the GPU more efficiently. Even if this wasn't the case, it's definitely a damn sight better to look at now!
Temps Under Gaming Load
Cyberpunk running at 4K with DLSS and Path Tracing RT used to run the GPU up to 75-77, and the CPU up to 73-75. It now runs at around 61-65 degrees on both the CPU and the GPU - much cooler than previously and significantly quieter! The PC is on my desk about 1.5ft away from me, and I can only hear it if I pause the game and listen out for noise in the silence.
Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War (running at 4K Native and maxed settings) hit at a similar low to mid 60s for both the GPU and CPU.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales at 4K with RT and DLSS now runs at 58-62 GPU and 60-65 CPU.
Overwatch 2 at 4K and maxed settings hits 48-51 GPU and 57-60 CPU, and runs dead silent.
Closing Thoughts
Overall I'm very happy with the above - I was able to drop temps significantly compared to my previous post, and configure a much quieter system at the same time.
I'm currently researching undervolting for both the 13600K and the 4080 - though for now I'm happy enough with my current load temps that I won't be rushing into this any time soon.
In the meantime, I'd be very happy to answer any questions anyone might have, and would also appreciate any further thoughts and advice from the community regarding the aforementioned adjustments.
Thank you for reading, and to the BuildAPC community, thank you for all the guidance you've provided over the last months as I researched, assembled, and tweaked my first PC build!

2023.05.30 11:15 dwredbaker Wisdom of poor people, often neglected and never remembered, even though the most powerful possession a nation, or individuals could possess. D. W. "Red" Baker

Ecclesiastes 9:13-18~"This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me: There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it: Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man. Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools. Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good."
"This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:"
The adverb also indicates Solomon has left his previous lesson on to another one. He reminds us that he is speaking of human life on the earth...."under the sun".
The lesson here is the superiority of wisdom to strength, in any form strength may be trusted in ABOVE wisdom. With nations like Russia, North Korea, it is their nuclear weapons; with China, it is the multitude of soldiers they can keep bringing at you, along with their weapons, etc. With the USA, it is their sophisticated technology, that is the envy of the world~which has become their god.
"It seemed great unto me"....In Solomon's observation of this he concluded this was significant in human existence among men living under the sun.
"There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:"
Now an example of what he want us to see and understanding. There was a little city, and few men within it....In order to exalt wisdom Solomon uses to adjectives little and few. emphasizes the city's weakness. and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:" again, to exalt the glory of wisdom the adjectives great is used twice stressing the king's power.
"Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man."
The poor wise man obscure in earthly status, even in a very small and sparse city. The wisdom under consideration is natural wisdom to understand prudent actions in a given situation.
Due to many circumstances, ALL by God's providence, even wise men may be poor~and it is very true, SPIRITUAL wisdom is found mostly among the poor of this world.
1st Corinthians 1:26-28~"For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:" I certainly see mine, that I do not fall among the wise of this world, but among the base things of the world, the things that are despised, things that are not.....! That's okay with me.
"he by his wisdom delivered the city"~Wisdom is greater than STRENGTH, WEAPONS OF WAR, ETC.
Oh, Lord, let us put our trust in true wisdom above all that this world has to offer us for protection. Save us from being fools, and the shame that follows all fools.
"yet no man remembered that same poor man." ~In spite of saving the city, this poor man's wisdom is SO SOON forgotten, which shows how much this world reject the principal thing one can possess...WISDOM. It is the strong delusion that most men live by~They trust in everything but wisdom, unless it comes from their own deceitful hearts!
"Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard."
The king in context had a big advantage and strength~but the poor wise man defeated him! Then Solomon said: Wisdom is better than strength....Wisdom is better than weapons of war~ Let Putin hear, and the fat boy from North Korea..... Kim Jong Un! Let President Biden hear, not that he cares, yet it is still the truth of the word of God. Let all of God's children take heed and put their trust the God of heaven receiving true wisdom from him.
"nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard."
In spite of his wisdom this poor man's wisdom is despised. When the city was besieged they heard, as soon as victory came, he was forgotten along with his wisdom. This is a great vanity under the sun, yet too often it is a very real phenomenon of human existence in this world.
Fools in their ignorance exalt strength, in whatever form it may come, wisdom is too high for fools, for their god is a humanistic religion that trust in no one above their own thoughts, etc.
"The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools. Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good."
It is very true that modest words of a wise man are to be preferred over loud, imperious fools, like the loud mouth from North Korea. All wise men will seek for wisdom to direct them in a time of trouble, they will not put their trust in THEIR OWN STRENGTH and abilities, etc.
"Wisdom is better than weapons of war" AMEN! I try not to take too much delight in our nations weapons of war, for God can easily take us down in a minute of time, by a bunch of moon worshippers wearing a rug over their heads, without even firing a shot! GIVE US WISDOM not weapons of war.
" but one sinner destroyeth much good." A loud mouth fool can cause much waste and destruction, as a wis eman can cause good, more probably so! A wise man can deliver a city, a fool can destroy a city, nation just as quick. One sinner destroys much good in a small window of time.

2023.05.30 11:00 EffectiveElevator602 Who is the evilest character in the cosmere?

Okay, so there are a lot of antagonists through out the Cosmere but they vary in types of evil. I have included a list and small summary (non-exhaustive) but who would be evilest?
I have separated characters from shards as I feel the shards intent in itself detracts from inherent choice to make evil choices. Like calling the terminator evil for being programmed to kill Sarah Conner.
I have tried to exclude as many spoilers as possible however there are definite spoilers for Mistborn Era 1, Mistborn Era 2, Elantris, The Stormlight Books, Warbreaker, and Tress of the Emerald Sea. That said, each has been identified as a possible spoiler so you might be able to read without reading all the above novels. Just be careful in the comments section.
Shards
1.Odium

This is my list. I have not included villains who aren't in the story much such as Bloody Tan. And I have also not included characters who were mentally unstable such as Bleeder. And I did not include the Voidbringers or the Unmade as they are unduly influenced by Odium.
Please let me know if I missed anyone or if you agree or disagree with the order!
P.S. Started this myself and found a few existing threads where this has been discussed before but don't include all the recent books I've included the ones I read through while writing this below, although most of my information was from the coppermind

2023.05.30 10:58 RandomGuyFromItaly Star Wars (original trilogy) is extremely overrated

Recently I've watched Star Wars (original trilogy) for the first time, and to say that I'm disappointed is downplaying it. From what I've heard for all this years, I was expecting something absolutely spectacular, but my god it is so far from that. I've seen far too many people considering LOTR, Harry Potter and Star Wars as the three pillars of fantasy/fiction in movies, but not only do I consider the first two much more superior, I straight up think the Star Wars (original trilogy) are just bad movies period. From a technical point of view, they're actually good, and I believe they aged fine, but the plot, the characters, the story, the world building are extremely poor. The worst thing by far are the plot holes: they are crucial and plentiful.
Am I the only one that thinks this? I'd like to be proven wrong, perhaps with examples from the actual movies, because I've got a list of what I believe to be are plot holes that might be explained (within the movies of course, not fandoms).
Ps: I might take a while to respond, because English is not my first language.
