2023.05.30 13:26 LordMemey The impact the anime's popularity has had on the Onk fandom

I believe it is a legitimate cause for self-examination whenever a series receives an adaptation leading to a surge in popularity. I'll be frank since it's obvious, Oshi no Ko anime was a staunch success and its popularity has been explosive. There is a real question of what the community would look like now that it has reached critical mass. The larger a community becomes, the more cancerous it tends to be.
As far as I've seen from this sub, the impact has been positive with a boost in enthusiastic analysis and theory crafting. I have yet to see debates outside of this community in the broader animanga sphere on comparison between Onk and other manga/anime similar to how One Piece fans preach that manga's supremacy like some sort of religious doctrine. Rather, as any extremely popular animanga, especially one that recently reached such heights, there's been negative feedback. But so far I haven't seen much toxicity
BUT The real issue and why I even felt like writing on this subject is the rising popularity of Ruby x Aqua post-anime. I've been reading this manga since 2020, been checking this sub for responses to new chapters since then. Given the set-up of the manga, it has always loomed over their relationship but it was always at the backburner and fringe. But now that OnK as at its height in popularity, I see the ship pop up in comments on here and on insta every now and then and I just sigh and roll my eyes. The minority has become large enough that it is now vocal and dare I say annoying and it doesn't help when the manga is accused of fetish-baiting. One thing I will say is this, one can't just blame anime-induced popularity. It is true that concurrently in the manga, Aqua's main ships are at their lowest in terms of their popularity. So much so that Akane x Kana has popped up more often.
But it's not like Aqua's relationship with Ruby is any better. In fact, all of Aqua's interpersonal relationships are deteriorating and his relationship with Ruby is in particular horrible. So it really is just people taking advantage of this void to fulfill their fetish and it doesn't give this community a good look.

Friend’s bike was was stolen and spent a week in Tampa Bay.
He kayaked out and got it when a dorm mate accidentally ran over it with a sailboat and told him where he saw it. This was 5-7 years ago. Now I’m trying to see if it’s salvageable. So far I’m surprised how not-rusted the steel frame is. Fork is rusty af, and needs new wheels. But here I go. Trek 820 circa 2009 I think.

2023.05.30 13:26 LikeASomeBoooodie DAE have trouble with traditional management and software estimation

I (28M Senior Engineer) work for a company that’s part product/R&D oriented, part project oriented. The product oriented part is mostly fine, but the project oriented part has some serious issues to do with how management interacts with the SDLC.
Essentially they’re old school, fixed budget, schedule and scope, no room for misestimation or change, no iteration of any kind. This has never gone well, software estimation is a guessing game at best and it’s easy to get messed up by undiscoverable complications. Budgets for projects always get blown, or clients get left with things missing from promised specs and sometimes get pissed off enough to litigate.
I would advocate harder for more iterative approaches but management have reacted to others who’ve tried with blank faces, and AFAICT the budgeting system is not setup for any kind of iterative process, and PMs are not trained in iterative processes.
How should I proceed here? I know what I would do but have no clue how to convince such a stuck-in-it’s-ways system to change. The only way I can see this improving is by jumping ship

2023.05.30 13:26 ohgodwhyalwaysme [Explorer] BO3 Rogues: The Anti-Anti-Rakdos Deck

First time doing a write up and doing it on mobile, so apologies if there are any formatting issues. Also I’m not the most updated with the meta, so my experiences are purely anecdotal and may not be the most accurate.
This is my first time getting to mythic rank ever since I started playing in 2019, mainly because I don’t enjoy the grind and I usually stop at platinum to switch to Historic Brawl. However, I really enjoyed the play style of Rogues and managed to hit platinum pretty early on, so over the course of the month I slowly made my way up the ladder, usually playing 1 or 2 matches every other day before finally reaching mythic with a 29-7 record (1 match wasn’t recorded because I accidentally closed Untapped).
Record: https://imgur.com/a/Rc0yVw7
Deck: https://imgur.com/a/8wUxuvW
Out of the 7 losses, 5 were to Rakdos Midrange, 1 to Boros Convoke, and 1 to Greasefang. As you can see, Rogues does pretty badly against Rakdos, although I find the matchup to be interesting and the games to be very close (most of my games went 1-2). With such a terrible matchup against a meta deck, why play it? The main reason is because the deck does well against the decks that try to go bigger and over Rakdos (e.g., Keruga Fires, Mono Green), so you can probably call it the anti-anti-Rakdos deck. The deck is also capable at playing at instant speed 90% of the time and our threats/answers are much more efficient than that of control decks, making them a good matchup for Rogues as well.
Matchups
Rakdos Midrange: unfavored Even though untapped shows my record as 1-5, the one win is against Rakdos Sacrifice (which I don’t have enough experience playing against and won’t comment on) so in reality I am at a 0% win rate against Rakdos Midrange. Basically, the deck has efficient answers (Fatal Push, Bonecrusher) and threats that are built in 2 for 1s (Trespasser, Fable) that makes it hard for the Rogues deck to keep up with. The nail on the coffin though is Kroxa. A recursive threat that weakens our entire game plan (threats, answers, card draw) changes this match up from slightly unfavored to outright unfavored. Adding 2 Into the Story in the sideboard didn’t help much for me, especially when there were times I lost 8 life because of 4 mana Sheoldred. You could probably try to change the deck configuration to outgrind Rakdos (4 mana Sheoldred and Into the Story maindeck), but it makes the deck clunkier and I personally prefer the play style of my current list anyway.
Keruga Fires: favored Playing against a deck full of >3 mana cards makes this an easy match up for Rogues as you can use the first couple of turns to develop your threats and out-tempo them, ending the game before their big cards come online. Even their most common sweeper, Temporary Lockdown, isn’t the most effective against Rogues because you could just EOT bounce with Brazen Borrower and make a lethal swing. Post-board they may bring in Supreme Verdicts, so it’s just a matter of not overextending. As long as you can keep Fires of Invention off the board, the Keruga Fires deck usually only has enough mana to deploy one threat/answer a turn, which we can hold up counters/answers for while we chip away at their life total with our creatures.
UW Control: favored Both the Rogues and UW Control decks are looking to play at instant speed, but Rogues has the upper hand with a heavier threat density and more efficient answers. Postboard makes it even more favored for us as we drop dead removal while the control deck has to keep them in, and it’s just a matter of playing around Verdicts. The only thing to watch out for is a turn 2 Rest in Peace, which is back-breaking, but thankfully for both times it happened to me I had a Spell Pierce at the ready.
Mono Green: favored The Mono Green matchup feels similar to Keruga Fires, although Mono Green has the potential to be a lot more explosive. If you have a Fatal Push for a turn 1 Elf it is probably correct 99% of the time to do so. The cards I’m most concerned about in the match up would be Karn and Cavalier, so I try to always keep up counters against them.
Greasefang: roughly equal(?) I’ve only played the match up twice and went 1-1, so I’m not exactly clear who is favored in the matchup, but I imagine it’s draw dependent and that it gets better for the Rogues deck postboard. The interesting thing is that both decks want the Greasefang deck’s graveyard to be filled, so it can often come down to drawing the right threats/answers against each other. Faerie Mastermind is also huge against Raffine’s Informant, turning their loot into a draw for us. Postboard, we get more targeted graveyard hate and efficient removal through Ray of Enfeeblement.
Mono White Humans: unfavored Even though I won 2-0 against the Humans decks I faced, I believe that the matchup to be unfavored especially with the addition of the Aftermath card Coppercoat Vanguard, which pumps and grants ward to other Humans. Coupled with Thalia, this can make our removal inefficient. Ray out of the sideboard definitely helps, but probably not enough.
Creativity Decks: favored I’ve faced Izzet, Rakdos and Grixis versions of Creativity, and find the decks to be too clunky to beat Rogues. Just always keep a counter up for Indomitable Creativity and it feels like you’re up against a subpar control deck.
Boros Convoke: unfavored The newest kid on the block, I find the deck to be very difficult to manage especially if they drop an early convoke creature on the board. The deck goes wider than the Rogues deck can manage and if it gets more popular, it may be correct to start adding Crippling Fears to the sideboard.
Mirror: In the mirror, the most important things to watch out for IMO is knowing when to time your spells and what your role is in the match. I believe this version is also more favored as it’s a lot more streamlined compared to the ones I’ve seen from my opponents. I’ve seen lists that play Invasion of Amonkhet, which I don’t believe is good enough, and 4 mana Sheoldred, but I find these cards to be too clunky. Having mainboard Cling to Dust also makes this version of the deck better in the mirror as you can turn the threshold off for the opponent.
Card Choices
I ported a version of a pioneer decklist I saw on Twitter to explorer since 100% of the cards are available, although I did swap some cards that I felt fit my play style better. I won’t talk about all the cards, but here are some notable inclusions.
[[Faerie Mastermind]]: The newest addition to the deck and what I believe makes this deck more viable than before, it presents an early clock and card advantage all in one package. Getting to deal twice as much damage as the Enforcer and Thought-Thief early on without the eight card threshold makes the Rogues deck a stronger tempo deck. The activated and triggered ability makes this card a live draw even in the late game, and is especially strong against cards that loot (Fable, Informant).
[[Spell Pierce]]: This card has overperformed for me, as many decks look to be mana efficient and play on curve. Initially a one-of, I added a second and have been satisfied with its performance.
[[Cling to Dust]]: The flex slot in my maindeck, it has performed reasonably well for me, although it could be correct to replace this with a higher impact card like Into the Story, 4 mana Sheoldred, or Kaito.
[[Jace, the Perfected Mind]]: To be honest, I kind of doubted this card’s utility and considered replacing it with more copies of Kaito or Into the Story, but so far Jace has been pretty decent. The most common ability I use is the the -2, although the +1 isn’t flashy or seemingly powerful, it has been useful with slowing down opposing threats. If the game goes long enough, getting to -2 and draw 3 feels unbeatable.
[[Sheoldred]]: The reason why I had to specify 4mana Sheoldred in the sections before this is because this version plays the newest 5 mana one. I usually bring it in against the grindier match ups and flipping it basically guarantees a win.
[[Darkslick Shores]]: Another new addition from the latest set alongside Faerie Mastermind, you can never underestimate the power of good painless mana fixing. This land is secretly one of the better additions even if it’s not a flashy addition.
[[Change the Equation]]: Against decks that play red or green, this is basically a better counterspell. I initially had 2 in the sideboard, but cut 1 for Into the Story.
[[Into the Story]]: This card is glaringly missing from the maindeck and was even originally not even in the sideboard (I only added it in a futile attempt to fight against Rakdos Midrange). I have to admit that its omission may actually be a mistake and might not be the most optimal choice, and should probably replace the Jaces. However, Jace getting to come down on turn 3 and stay on the board as a threat is an advantage over Into the Story. It might even be correct to swap the sideboard Stories and the mainboard Jaces. Will definitely continue testing more to see which is better.
TLDR: Rogues is good against decks that try to go over Rakdos Midrange (Keruga Fires, Mono Green) and control decks but terrible against Rakdos Midrange itself.

2023.05.30 13:26 LRDsreddit How are some of you guys able to know if your build is going to be tanky enough or deal enough damage just from watching the POB ?

Hello guys,
Over the 2-3 last years, I've tried so many builds from poe.ninja or even guides from anywhere, and I would say at the very beginning, it was hard for me to estimate how tanky or how much damage a build would do just from watching the POB.
Recently (2022-2023) I was able to estimate pretty well both (damage/tankiness) for most builds I've played, however I still had surprises with some builds, where I'd expect a bit more tankiness or much more damage even though I was sure it would be good beforehand (just from looking at the POB).
I think it's a real skill to be able to perfectly visualise and estimate a build capacity just from watching POB, I remember there was an interview of darkee (ben) where he was saying that he is very good at that, like he knows exactly how's the build gonna feel just from watching the POB.
I'm happy with my current level at this task even though it's far from great, I was wondering if you guys had a lot of succes doing that and most importantly, if you have like a methodology or fixed stats/numbers that you would always look for and that never fails you.
Let me know how you approach this whole thing.

2023.05.30 13:25 maylenex3 Rant bcuz I’m getting tired of my sister in law.

I married my husband last year, I moved from my home state to live in his state. I’m not entirely use to this change yet & one of his sisters lives in this state too. I use to not like her bcuz of some comments she made in the past related to my husband & I b4 we married. & well now that we live sorta close by she invited us over a weekend for breakfast. She has the habit to leave the dishes on the table or sink and do them hours later & that day she went to sit down on her sofa & I decided to help her & wash them. Well her husband told her to do the dishes so I didn’t have to bcuz I’m visiting & she invited us over… she responded to him with “No, it’s so she can get practice”. I got upset bcuz I already fuking know how to wash dishes, I’m the one who does them at my house. Then she’s ended up catching COVID back last year & she had to be hospitalized. Her husband called us at 5AM if we could take her to the hospital bcuz he’s a truck driver & was far from home. We ended up coming to her house, my husband took her to the hospital & I stayed to take care of her kids… well I ended up getting COVID obviously and my husband too. Those days when she was in the hospital my husband & I had to stay at her house & take care of her kids, her husband was at the hospital w/ her, we were all sick. Well when she got out of the hospital she just thanked my husband. Like okay I guess I don’t get a “thank you” for watching your kids & cleaning your house for 2 fcking weeks. Well now this year she recently had a baby. I’m currently pregnant but I’m due later on this year. But she had a baby & she breastfeeds. Nothing wrong about feeding her baby. She breastfeeds in front of all us that being her husband, her dad, her mom, her brother (my husband), her kids, her uncles, aunts, and her cousins. So we’ve all seen her breast and nipples, she’s not shy & well she has big boobs. But the thing that upsets me is her comments. I feel like she wants people to look at her boobs bcuz there’s time she tells all of us “look at how full/big they are”. Or “look my shirt is wet bcuz of how full they are” or there’s time she’s literally jiggling one of her boobs & then the other one. & I brought that up with my husband & told him that I don’t know why she says those things like… “okay your boobs are big… we get it”. & that personally when I have my kid I’m going to cover up so I don’t make anyone feel uncomfortable in case. Well he got upset at me for that and isn’t talking to me. Like I’m just giving my opinion and he gets upset. He’s told me before that he’s always going to defend his family… he told me that bcuz I got upset bcuz his other sister in Mexico was asking him for $$ to go to a concert and for drinks… she works so idk why she had to ask my husband. But honestly I feel like he puts his siblings over me at times, especially his sister. Like he defends her over me and I get it… it’s his sister but I feel like he cares more about her than me. Like I’m literally your wife & I’m carrying your baby. I’ve caught his sister talking about me before and there’s times I feel like she doesn’t like me. My husband doesn’t understand, he gets defensive when I talk about her but he’s talked about my sister saying she’s ugly and I don’t get upset and ignore him like he does with me.

2023.05.30 13:25 bowmhoust karma for dummies

Karma is a powerful basic concept. I had a really hard time to understand karma for a long time, so maybe this helps some others struggling with it.
Let's say. I like sweets. But eating sweets is "bad karma", right? Why? What does that mean?
Well, if I eat sweets every day, it makes it absolutely necessary to brush my teeth at least twice a day. Otherwise they will start to rot.
Okay, but what's so bad about that?
It's bad, because when I eat sweets it limits my possible futures. Why is that? Because at any moment, there is an infinite amount of possible futures for us to experience. And by eating the snack, I close the door to some of them. I close the door to some degrees of spontaneity. What can I do tonight? Well who knows, but I need to be back before heading to bed, because I brush my teeth, right?
Wouldn't it be something if I were so free, that I could sleep wherever I just happen to be as I pursue something more meaningful than brushing my teeth? Where I can just do something else that is important to me more intensely instead?
I'm also closing the door to all kinds of possible futures where I don't even feel the urge to eat sweets, because I managed to abstain for a while.
No only does it make good futures more unlikely, it also opens up new possible horror futures, scenarios built upon rotting layers of old karma. Scenarios where I get a root canal treatment or an extraction. Where I have to pay money for that, so it bleeds over in all kind of areas of my life. Where I'm actually afraid of the dentist and pass this fear on to my children subconsciously.
Karma is all about that. It's individual, it's collective, it's a fundamental force of the subjective nature. It literally is what makes the world go round. It's the "why" behind anything anybody ever did, does and will do. And at every moment, we have the obligation to work off past karma. If we do it mindfully, we may get some new ideas about how we could do things better in the future. Every moment is an invitation to either take care of our shit or let it accumulate.

2023.05.30 13:25 scredeye What is the right approach towards job applications if phone calls and emails are discouraged now?

For context I graduated with a mechanical engineering degree with top grades and work experience and had to take a sales role.
I am not considered a citizen to any country including my own as I was born abroad and will always be offered less and will be asked to bribe in my own country.
In the past I have always gained employment by showing my face somewhere and proving I can work well but lately I have noticed no company picks up any calls, doesnt reply to emails sent enquiring about the company, work ethic or position details.
How am I supposed to stand out and make an impression/prove my skillset if my CV immediately turns people off because the first thing an ATS software picks up is my title and rejects me or my passport is an issue globally?
What can I do to stand out better and secure a career movement back into my industry (engineering)
For reference, my CV has been vetted and now passes ATS and resume programs well thanks to a friendly redditor who helped me out earlier this year.

2023.05.30 13:25 TabletopCatt Keeping it chill

So since I've been back this last month doing WOTLK and reliving my old days I've done something to keep myself in check. You see normally what happens in a lot of MMOs for me is I get into a group, they're rather hardcore or just must level as fast as possible. Instead of ignoring a lot of the game I'm going through on my hunter and finishing out zones. So far I've got the starter blood elf area, Ghostlands, and Stonetalon Mountains completely finished up. Next is Thousand Needles. I plan on going back at some point for the other zones and seeing what they have to offer.

I'm having a lot of fun reading out the quests, getting 100% exploration on the zones, and doing my professions. How many other peeps out there playing like this? I sometimes get the feeling that everything from players is about max efficiency and that's just the quickest way for me to burn out personally.

2023.05.30 13:25 Almond_Pistachio Motivational quotes are quite confusing to me

I find motivational/life quotes quite confusing. Given the plethora of one liners that I see on social media I’m always mulling over which values to adopt and live by. Particularly those from really successful and eminent personalities.
“If you really want something, you should relentlessly pursue it.”
“Whatever is meant to be yours shall be effortlessly yours.”
I don’t know if this is in context with people as well. If you like someone, should you try hard to get them or should you just be yourself and let them come to you?
“You deserve to be heard and understood by someone special.”
“No one in life has any obligation to you, at the end you’re all you have.”
Now I am not sure if I should expect anything from anyone at all. Or should I wait for the special one?
“Fake it until you make it.” “Emulate the people you admire to become like them.”
“Be yourself. Your very authentic self.”
Now I’m confused as to how I should be.
There’s a myriad of quotes like these and I am always confused as to which one to follow or how to apply the right one. I don’t know if I’m taking these out of context or perspective but how do you guys go about these?

2023.05.30 13:23 Ok-Reward-6390 21 [M4F] Brazil/anywhere - poet looks for a half to write about

I haven’t even flirted with anyone for such a long time that I thought this could be fun. I’d have loved to say that the idea of doing this came to me during a dream, but I haven’t dreamt in a long time.
I am a 21 years old male from a big city in Brazil. I am going to university for a social sciences degree, and I have done pretty well so far. Besides all that, I write poetry on the side, and I work for a small online newspaper.
I am fascinated fairly often by many things and I have many hobbies so you won’t be bored. Last month I became fascinated by Spanish modern history after reading Preston’s biography of Francisco Franco and I was reading about the Miracle on the Han River yesterday, while my family gave a lunch party and I had to keep myself entertained while they discussed the tragedy of a heiress’ dog many illnesses, which were mysteriously shared with his owner, and some reforms in the Vatican Bank. But yes, in general, I really enjoy the humanities. I follow politics keenly – in fact, there is some chance I might have some thoughts on your country’s politics – and I’d say I am on the centre-left – pro-choice, in favour of a robust welfare state, LGBTQ+ rights, affirmative action. If you know about Brazilian politics, I voted for Marina and Haddad in 2018 (the voting age here is 16), and Lula last year.
As you can imagine, I also really enjoy reading and writing. Besides poetry, I have often thought about reading a novel, but this seems like too much work – and it seems that it would be arrogant of me to write a novel having lived this little. I really enjoy learning about other languages and cultures and I know a bit of French, German, Spanish, and Russian, besides English and Portuguese. I am into genealogy and I have helped a few friends with it. I also really enjoy TV shows and cinema, and I am easily brought to tears. I cried during the last Minions movie, even if I didn’t want to be there. I love music and my taste in it has been described as “fairly gay”. I’d have loved to be a musician, but I’d have loved to have been many things.
I guess I am pretty introverted, polite, and timid. I am affectionate and I can be really passionate as well. And I am fairly funny, or rather, I have made a few people laugh over the years. I asked a close friend to describe myself, and that is what he said:
I think you’re very communicative. Shrewd, funny, a good companion. Kind of withdrawn but not necessarily shy. You avoid conflict and unnecessary arguments, but love to participate in good conversations. I think you’re very kind too, besides being polite.
As for what I want to do with my life, I am unsure though I am inclined to go into academia. I have been considering applying to a PhD program in the U.S. after finishing my undergrad here in Brazil. My family does want me to go into their business, which is related to politics. I have also considered going into diplomacy.
Who am I looking for? I’d look like someone curious about the world around her, and open-minded.
Some poems I really like:
Some songs I have been listening to:

2023.05.30 13:23 Hillsy7 Train automation idea - Can it Work?

Hi All,
So I'm pretty new to Astroneer and I've been really enjoying it so far. I'm looking to start my first automated factory and set up a simple rail loop to visit 7 Extractors around Glacio. The Idea was to grab what I need from each and deliver it to home base when I can restock my factory elements.
Simple in theory: 1 Train pick up at 7 locations, drop off at 1......(I'm happy just having it running forever so I don't need "calling" logic)

The issue I'm seeing in is that if 1 of my resources is used much more than the other, any storage on the train can get filled with other resource types, meaning that when it's needed there's no spare capacity to pick up.
My first instinct was that I can put resource cannisters on the train to partition my storage.....But I can foresee a problem where the cannisters need to turn off dispensing at a resource station, but allow dispensing at the output....which seems easy, but how would I turn on/off dispensing for all my cannisters when arriving and leaving the delivery location?

Again, I'm pretty new to Astroneer so if there's a solution that is logic light, I'll award bonus points!
Thanks in advance!

2023.05.30 13:22 CantPlayNieR Ideas for a magic system based around Salts

Hello! I'm attempting to outline a magic system for a low fantasy lovecraftian-esque pirate novel I plan to eventually write. TL;DR at the end.
I was toying around, trying to come up with an unique magic system that’s pirate ‘themed’. Thought about water manipulation, but I’m not really into writing elemental magic systems (while I enjoy reading them, I’m not creative enough to write them). At some point I just thought: “There’s plenty of salt in the sea! (And other places).”
There are two major races in this word: The people of the Blue Prince and the People of the Red Maiden.
The People of the Red Maiden are merfolk. Sirens, Mermaids, Selkies, Kelpies, Cetaceans and all kind of aquatic creatures. Their blood is Red (original, yes — I’m still developing the idea lol). They worship the Red Star (eldritch god)
The People of the Blue Prince are landwellers. I’m still deciding if they’re all humans or made up of different humanoid races. Their blood is blue. They worship the Blue Sea (another eldritch god).
The Idea isn’t super developed yet (because I’m currently working on another major WIP, but I’m fleshing out a little bit of it so I don’t end up forgetting it before I start writing) so I don’t have much on it yet. The bones I have so far are the follow:
The Red and The Blue were worshiped as twin gods; wayyyyy back then, when the humans and the merfolk were at peace (ish — they weren’t exactly allies, but weren’t on open war either). Now, as Merfolk and Humans became enemies, so did the Red and the Blue.
It all started when a proud prince shouted at the Blue that no creature could best him. The Blue, quite itched at his challenge, did find it fit to scratch by sending at the prince great monsters for him to meet his match. But no beast of Gods could cow this man, (or so his crewmen thought), and fuming, the Sea could only turn away, scoff and command he rot. The Prince did then celebrate his victory against the Blue, and drove his ship through all the dangerous waters in his view. Thus the Blue sent the maiden of Red, who enthralled the sailors so they wouldn’t beg. She feasted on them as they drowned — until one remained: the Blue Prince. She spared him, leaving him stranded on her isles. It was his punishment for killing the Blue’s creatures. All the while the Red laughed at the prince’s curse. And so the Prince resolved that day to slay this siren and claim her Song, once her power to drive men mad was dead and gone. But the Maiden was as alone as the Prince. And, after eons of eachother’s company, they grew up to forgive and to love, even. The maiden doted sweetly and showed him her secret ways, to both breathe underwater and to live for many days. In such a long extended stay, the Prince did realize, that in all his freedom, he never felt alive. The Maiden trusted him and so told him of how her voice did go, and how to counteract it when she sang her song of doom. And as the words left her mouth, the Prince leapt through the room and drove his saber through her heart. The prince felt no real relief, his love was dead, and he was now alone. He tried to drown, but he could no longer, so he screamed instead. His sword hacked away at his foul flesh, all the while the Blue and the Red laughed, speaking to him of the maiden. But of the prince’s scream the Blue did tire, calling the Red a foul and a liar. In a fit of scheme weaved the Blue the tale of Prince and Maiden anew.
The Prince’s flesh had long turned to salt — and with salt the Blue made men from default. Thus came to be the first new human.
The Red Star hissed at Blue’s treason, and from the ocean’s blood, the Red made the merfolk — all of which hated humans; but one hated them more: the Siren with the Maiden’s blood.
TL;DR: humans were made from salt, so salt has ‘magical’ properties. Any suggestions as to what which kind of salt could do? Any ideas on different types of salt?
I also have no idea regarding the merfolk’s magic system. (Maybe pepper? Lol)

2023.05.30 13:22 Confident_Egg_3383 How do you deal when it’s your family (husbands) causing trouble?

We (me wife and kids) live close to my family (one road along in a small town) and not so close to hers.
My wife has a lot of sabr and she got on well with my family but she won’t tolerate my family being rude to hers which they have been. Her red line is crossed. She won’t speak to them until they apologised and they aren’t apologising people. I’m not happy either as they’ve embarrassed me and caused disharmony in my home. I support my wife’s reasoning.
I come from a family of gaslighters who never accept responsibility but the family are close to my children. My family aren’t bad people (not that I can compare having only been part of one family) but they seem to have envy towards my inlaws who we hardly see (less than once a months) and they aren’t involved in our lives. Very chill people.
I can envisage a very changed future and my wife has cancelled my daughters birthday meal with both families because of this. We’re celebrating privately.
How do couples in a similar situation deal with things like this?

Website copywriting is being used everywhere these days, and startling growth, extensive successful marketing campaigns, and even broader social discussions can all be started with a single stellar copy.
Unlike other forms of website writing, copywriting does not give you the freedom to elaborate your thoughts using lengthy analogies or examples. You have to be brief and to the point - and yet you have to take the reader by surprise, and make them feel that they just had an arresting experience by reading a writing piece of 100 characters or less.
In the virtual world where everyone's attention spans last a few seconds, would you say that excellent copywriting skills make you a better social media marketer, PR manager, and web content creator? Here are 10 pitfalls to avoid to excel at your game.

10 Mistakes In The Copywriting World That Can Sabotage Your Impact

1. Focus On A Problem You Can Solve

This is perhaps a general guideline for any form of content that you are creating on the web. Don't give solutions if you don't have a real problem to solve - this will only confuse and frustrate the reader.
Research the product you are writing about and choose one of the most fundamental issues it is resolving. Now make sure you are engaging with this issue in the copy you are creating. While every brand has its own tone, they all want to write a copy that sounds effortlessly confident but does not seem to say to the customer "you are stupid, and I will tell you what you need."

2. Avoid Using Complex Language

Most writers have an affinity for complex language. But remember, in the world of website copywriting, the average website user finds industrial terminologies, factual information, and complex sentences joined together - nothing but traumatizing.
Readers feel disconnected from the message - even if it was indeed meant for them. Our job as web copywriters is always to represent the importance of a topic in the most accessible language that can be understood at a glance.

3. Give Up Trying To Fit In Too Many Concepts

Always, always try to stick to a single idea in a message when you are drafting your final copy. If you really like taglines or a secondary addition to your main copy, you can introduce another concept but also in one single line.
Lengthy copies don't look like copies at all. Too many concepts in copywriting make the advertisement look desperate. In fact it can even turn existing customers away.

4. Ask "Is Your Copywrite Saying What You Think It Is Saying?"

When you are writing, you first form the concept and then put it into words. But a reader is on the opposite end, and they will first read the words and then derive the concept from it. This essentially means that because you already have the concept in your mind, you as the copywriter may end up reading messages in the copy that simply are not there.
The best way to tackle this common pitfall is to ask someone else on your team to read the copy (who has no idea what concept you are going for) and tell you what they think it is saying. As long as they don't have to analyze the meaning of the message, you are good to go!

5. Don't Write From The Wrong Perspective

A successful piece of website copywriting can be approached from various different perspectives. Indeed you can even approach an advertisement from the perspective of a duck and still make it famous!
The perspective must, however, align with the overall marketing campaign as well as the advertisement of which your copy or caption will be a part. The right perspective will come from knowing the content inside out, knowing the target audience, knowing what you are expected to say and almost knowing already how your reader is going to read it in their head.

6. Stay As Far From The Passive Voice As Possible

The passive voice simply does not work on the Internet especially not where web copywriting is concerned. Psychologists have stated that passive voices are hard to keep track of as they don't involve the reader readily in the story.
Attention spans are shorter in the case of passive voices and messages are less crisp. It dilutes the strength of the message and eats up the unique tone of the copy.

7. Don't Go Crazy With SEO

Search Engine Optimization is essential for any piece of website copywriting to do well because otherwise, the copy will simply not reach anyone. But since the word limit is so short in copies, it is very easy to overdo the SEO so much that it will be visible to the readers as well.
On the other hand, you might want to ignore relevant keywords and SEO rules altogether because of the restriction of the length. If you do so your message will not have the exposure it should have had even if it were the best copy in the world.

8. Evaluate The Core Of The Message You Are Spreading

We have seen recently how often marketing campaigns are facing the limelight for not-so-flattering reasons. The reader is not afraid to hold marketers accountable for any dubious messages they are spreading.
It is often said that your idea is the body and the words you use to express it are the mere apparel it is wearing. Evaluate the core of the message you are spreading as much as you can so that you are factually, emotionally and socially in the right.

9. Don't Go In Too Formal

If you have taken copywriting seriously, chances are you are well acquainted with the most successful copywriting campaigns in history. One thing is common in all of them - the writing style is extremely conversational.
While you want to be conversational you also want to respect the cultural and generational needs of your target audience. Indeed, what is humorous to one culture or age group can be offensive to another.

10. Of Course, Don't Be Too 'inspired'

Some creators have the nasty habit of getting too 'inspired' by other artists on the internet - so much so that they make extremely similar content to them. Don't be that person. There are serious consequences to using concepts or artistic styles that you do not own in your ad campaigns.
This can lead to social and legal scandals for both you and the company you are working with. Simply put, when it is so easy to tell if a copywriter has been lazy, avoid creating your copies at the last moment no matter what, and do your research beforehand.

Conclusion

Web copywriting is so powerful- it can engage and convey a message in far less time than in longer formats. Not only that, competent copywriting can separate your brand from all the rest with a single slogan or tagline.
However, to get the best results, you must avoid the above-mentioned pitfalls!

2023.05.30 13:21 Flat-Ad-1360 Absolutely appaling experience via booking.com leading to distress and loss of funds

I hired an eight seater minibus on Saturday to travel up from Macnhester to lake District for the day for some family that I had over visiting including a young child (under three) and two elderly folks over 70.
Whilst at lake district, a couple of us decided that it would be nice to go a little bit further up to explore Scotland. Thought it would be a little bit unlikely we'd get any bookings but according to booking dot com we were in luck and had the four double rooms we needed availble in a three-star hotel in Arrochar. Whilst their I quickly made the booking, confirmation of order was given by the hotel (via booking dot com) by email and text as well as confirmation of order by my bank. We received enough confirmation that anyone would be confident they'd be no problems and thought nothing more of the matter, just trudged along on the tiring 4-6 hour journey ahead.
When we reached there the receptionists told us that there had been some kind of 'error in the system' and the rooms were not available as they were already fully booked. Obviously I was really taken aback and a little bit annoyed by such a let down and inconveniance to use, not having received so much as a text or phone call to let use no about this during transit. All I received was a single email, obscurely telling us one of the rooms had been cancelled (as opposed to the four that we received to confirm booking), which I obviously could not check during the hazardous transit. Nothing further - no attempt to call or text by the hotel to inform us of the situation until we reached their.
My family wer emade to wait outside the front entrance due to lack of space amid a haze of biting insects, the stings were so bad that they ended up having to sit back inside the van for a further 30-45 mins whilst I tried to sort out this mess.
What annoyed me the msot was the lack of mannerisms of the sstaff - they were rude, abrasive, defensieve and completely unapologetic about the situation, both literally and metaphorically putting their hands up and instead pinning the enitre blame upon booking dot com saying it's entirely their fault which contradicts booking dot coms emails that states that they are not responsible. We did not even receive so much as an apology from the staff at this horrible little hotel, let alone an proper explanation - just pinning the entire blame on booking dot come and essentially saying nothing more of the matter. I enquired about the pending funds and was at least assured that they would be cancelled and we would receive a refund.
Whatever the case, and having received no further help from the staff at this place for hleping find rooms at another accomodation, other than the number for booking dot coms automated services (and they gave the number for business as opposed to customers) we ventured in to town and were told by some hlepful locals of a nice place to stay in Helensburgh some 45 min drive from there.
The rooms here, depsite being low rated were splendid. They were so good that we decided we'd like to stay on Monday and return on Tuesday so that everyone, especially me, as the drive could rest and recuperate, esp my back.
Just before noon I received a text to inform me that the funds had been taken by the hotel from the previous night. Now £400 down, we did no have th efund we needed to stay another night as planned and had to isntead make the long journey back the same night.
And to put it simply, and I have no idea between them who is to blame - the hotel or booking dot com, my entire family hotel was COMPLETELY.
I put my entire faith in the confident confirmation expressed by this hotel via booking dot come and then at least staff telling me to rest assured funds would not be taken so I could get on with my weekend family trip and instead came home the very next day with a bad back, distressed young and elderly and minus £400 for absolutely no reason, and when they said they wouldn't.
I sent an email to this hotel the moment I received the bank payment confirmation not wanting to deal with the rude and defensieve demanour of the staf fonce again, and a whole day has passed and they appear to have completely ingored my email.
Usually I wouldn't make such a fuss - but the level of negligence involved here was absolutely disgusting. As for the money that was taken form my acocunt, we had come the night before, they were well aware of the situation, none of us sat down on the front step of their premises for longer than half an hour and they still decided to proceed with taking the funds - I don't know how to think of this as anyhting other than theft.
Please can somebody advice how best to approach rectifying this situation.

  • June 16 - Midway Discussion
  • June 30 - Final Discussion

Q&A

Thank you for agreeing to this Q&A. Before we start, tell us a little about yourself?
I am a lawyer and indie fantasy author from New Zealand, with a great love for Soulsborne video games, reading, and movies.
What brought you to fantasy? What do you appreciate about it?
I have enjoyed the genre since I was old enough to read, and Reddit is a great place to bring a truly diverse group of fans together. Fantasy is wholesome and everyone is generally super polite and enthusiastic about books.
Who are your favorite current writers and who are your greatest influencers?
Good question. Most of my favourite authors have passed away, but Mark Lawrence is a damned good one that’s still kicking. Stephen Erikson is also phenomenal. In the scifi realm, I love Dmitri Glhukovsky, author of the Metro 2033 series.
As for influences: JRR Tolkien, Brandon Sanderson, Gene Wolfe, Kentaro Miura, and Stephen King have all inspired me and my writing. And those Soulsborne games, of course.
Can you lead us through your creative process? What works and doesn’t work for you? How long do you need to finish a book?
I am an outliner. I usually think of an ending and sketch the story out from there. I am also someone that underwrites, meaning I actually add a lot of words while editing my first draft. My writing is very fast-paced, which I really like as it ensures there is no bloat and little chance for boredom.
How would you describe the plot of A Canticle of Two Souls if you had to do so in just one or two sentences?
A young boy with a sentient blade teams up with a girl who can hear and manipulate emotions. They join together and find out the truth about themselves and their enemies.
What subgenres does it fit?
Some readers say it borders on grimdark. It could be dark fantasy too, depending on how people define it.
How did you come up with the title and how does it tie in with the plot of the book?
One of my favourite books of all time is A Canticle for Liebowitz, so the title is a nod to that. Fun fact: my current boss asked about this very connection in my job interview, so that was cool.
As for how it ties into the story: Warchildren are people who can hear emotions. There is a lot of musical imagery in my books, and the two souls are the protagonists. This book is essentially a song about those two characters and their tale.
What inspired you to write this story? Was there one “lightbulb moment” when the concept for this book popped into your head or did it develop over time?
The very first idea of this story began as a choose-your-own-adventure gamebook which I wrote when I was 16. By the time I sat down to write a novel, I was 24 and the entire story had morphed into what it is now. This book didn’t have a lightbulb moment, but my next ones did.
If you had to describe the story in 3 adjectives, which would you choose?
Violent, meaningful, metal
Would you say that A Canticle of Two Souls follows tropes or kicks them?
It absolutely follows a few tropes, but I (and my readers) do think it twists a lot of tropes into something new.
Who are the key players in this story? Could you introduce us to A Canticle of Two Souls protagonists/antagonists?
Raziel is a 14 year old orphan (a big trope, I know, but I did something with it) who has quite serious trauma and consequent mental health issues. Alicia is a girl with a tough exterior hiding some past trauma as well. They really need friends and support, and eventually learn to trust one another throughout the story. Ultio is Raziel’s sentient sword, a real mean son-of-a-b**ch and the big bad guy. As a companion on the quest, this puts the three characters in constant conflict with eachother.
Have you written A Canticle of Two Souls with a particular audience in mind?
Not really. Some readers compare the tone of the book to Berserk. It is a very serious book, as I enjoy meaningful fantasy with a darker tone. The book contains violence but no SA.
Alright, we need the details on the cover. Who's the artist/designer, and can you give us a little insight into the process for coming up with it?
I am a retired artist with a ton of art friends. One of my closest is Reffelia, a highly-talented artist and wonderful person. Her instagram is here: https://www.instagram.com/_reffelia_
I sketched what I wanted, basing the style on the Witcher 3 steelbook artwork, and finalised the cover design myself.
What was your proofreading/editing process?
I proofread the work a dozen times on my laptop, then printed the whole thing out and scribbled on every single page, sometimes on the back of them too. As I said before, I add a lot of text in my edits. My final edit was completed by a professional editor.
What are you most excited for readers to discover in this book?
The setups and payoffs. There are some tiiiny details which you will gloss over in Book 1 which setup stuff in Book 3. A reread would reveal a lot.
Can you, please, offer us a taste of your book, via one completely out-of-context sentence?
Horror and terror rode through the ranks, invisible beasts striking deep into every man’s heart.
